- Chapter 69 - The Fluffy Cat Nest
After confirming their plan to go to Lianzhou, Qin Changxin immediately began writing letters.
Lin Yanyu, having taken on her human form to help grind ink, noticed that Qin took out two sheets of paper and asked with a soft “Hmm?”:
“One letter for the Lü family is the other one to send home?”
“Mhm. The Lu family and mine have long been allies. Their patriarch will send someone to assist,” Qin nodded, glancing at the second sheet. “Though my father treats me poorly, he is still head of the family. Now that my elder sister is wanted by every demon-slaying sect in the human world, I must inform him it’s my duty, both as a daughter and as a member of the family.”
Seeing Lin Yanyu nod, she dipped the brush into the ink and continued writing. “Actually… I’ve never had the habit of sending letters home. Compared to the Qin family, Kuixuan Academy feels more like my real home.”
Lin Yanyu murmured an understanding “mm.” After what she’d learned about the girl’s lost memories, she already understood a little and didn’t pry.
“I’m writing to ease my father’s worries not for my own sake, but for my mother’s,” Qin went on. “I still haven’t found a cure for her illness, but at least I can ensure she lives comfortably, even if I can’t be by her side.”
“I understand,” Lin Yanyu replied. “Once we’ve dealt with Xiao Xianyi’s matter, I’ll help you look for a way.”
She had just finished grinding the ink, and after setting the inkstick aside, she shifted back into her black cat form and rubbed her soft fur against Qin Changxin’s hand as the girl pressed the paper flat.
Qin smiled faintly, brushed the cat’s fur aside with her little finger, and focused on her writing.
Lin Yanyu quietly watched her finish the letter. Suddenly, a thought struck her maybe she should return to the Demon Realm too. Even if the Demon Lord couldn’t send aid to the human world, what lay ahead was dangerous enough that she ought to at least let her family know.
She hesitated.
In her previous life or rather, in that other world she had no parents. The demon slayer who raised her had been an orphan too. Though he was her teacher and caretaker, he was neither like a mother nor a sister. She had never truly known what “family” meant.
But traveling from Yunzou to the Demon Realm was a long trip at least five days even at top speed. And if she stayed a few days, the round trip could easily take half a month.
As for using a teleportation array? Out of the question. Though this world was rich in spiritual energy, teleportation arrays were rare and costly no one used them unless absolutely necessary.
Lin Yanyu calculated the timeline for when the “Lianzhou arc” would begin and grew more anxious the more she thought about it. She decided to wait patiently until Qin finished sealing her letters, then turned to her for help.
“I’ll go with you to the Demon Realm,” Qin said immediately.
Lin Yanyu blinked in surprise.
“The orange cat demon Zhu Wansheng died there. We know little about her, but the Demon Lord who slew her must know the truth. Besides,” Qin added, “I need to ask the Demon Lord about Xiao Xianyi.”
Lin Yanyu sighed. “How are we supposed to get there? Whether we use the Feng clan’s flying swords, your ‘No-Grudge Fan,’ or I carry you on my wings it’ll still take at least ten days round trip.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll speak to my master,” Qin said, running her hand gently along the cat’s back. “I can persuade him to let us use the teleportation array.”
“You’re going to tell Elder Six about your recovered memories?” Lin Yanyu’s heart skipped a beat.
“This is our secret. I won’t say a word.” Qin shook her head and hugged the cat close to her face. “I have another way.”
Since she promised that, Lin Yanyu didn’t press further. She just nuzzled Qin’s cheek with a soft purr before leaping back onto the desk, watching her leave with the letters.
For some reason, she felt that the girl had become so much more dependable perhaps because she had seen the version of Qin who’d survived alone in another life.
Convincing Master Chuhanzi didn’t take long. That evening, as Lin Yanyu was in the kitchen making milk tea, she suddenly sensed a familiar aura behind her. The next second, Qin Changxin hugged her from behind.
A jade pendant was placed before her eyes. Its middle bulged slightly a closer look revealed a tiny bead embedded within.
“This is the array core that activates the teleportation formation,” Qin whispered softly by her ear. “When would Yanyu like us to depart?”
“If possible, tonight,” Lin Yanyu said at once. “I might have to convince my mother to let me return to the human realm better to go early, just in case.”
“Then tonight it is.” Qin didn’t hesitate. “Do you have anything you’d like to bring back?”
“That’s the thing…” Lin Yanyu frowned. “When humans visit family, what do they usually bring?”
Qin froze for a moment. After two seconds of silence, she answered quietly, “My father never allowed me to bring gifts. He’d scold me for wasting time shopping. When Mother was still well, I’d bring her talismans I’d drawn. But I was under ten then… After she fell ill, I stopped bringing anything.”
Both were stumped until they suddenly thought of Zhuang Jingwei, who came from a noble family.
“You’re a princess of the Demon Realm,” Zhuang Jingwei said when they asked her advice. “Your gifts should follow demon customs. In the human realm, people bring jewelry, treasures, or spiritual beasts. But the Demon Lord hardly needs those, right?”
“Sister Lin, why not bring my uncle instead!” interrupted Feng Xianchen, who was reading at the side. “He’s been wanting to visit the Demon Lord anyway. You could take him along as your escort!”
Zhuang Jingwei laughed. “Who brings an uncle as a gift?”
“I think Senior Feng Mingchi is a much better present,” Lin Yanyu said sincerely. “Oh, right — my carriage and my horse demon are still at the Feng estate, right?”
When she’d left the Demon Realm, she’d used a carriage imbued with the Demon Lord’s aura — far too conspicuous to keep at the Qin residence. So she’d left it with the Feng family.
“They’re both safe and well fed!” Feng Xianchen beamed. “So, shall I fetch Uncle?”
The three agreed quickly, and Zhuang Jingwei had no objection.
Feng Mingchi , Feng Xianchen’s uncle was, like the arena keeper Ling Cang and the recluse Song Yan of Ningzhou’s borderlands, one of those powerful but low-profile NPCs.
Ever since Master Chuhanzi had invited him to the Academy, Feng Mingchi had stayed there, wandering the back mountain with his wine gourd. Qin had wanted to thank him after waking up, but he’d been gone all afternoon.
When they found him at dinnertime in the guest hall, he was drinking and eating contentedly with Master Chuhanzi’s big white cat sprawled on his lap.
“Uncle!” Feng Xianchen cried, running over excitedly and scooping up the white cat. “Uncle, will you go to the Demon Realm? Sister Changxin and Sister Lin are leaving tonight!”
Feng Mingchi froze mid drink, glancing at Qin in surprise. “Truly?”
“Truly!” Feng Xianchen nodded hard and gently pushed Lin Yanyu forward. “Sister promised to introduce you to the Demon Lord…”
“Or maybe just guide you there,” Lin Yanyu corrected shyly. “Eighteen years ago, something happened between my mother and Aunt Feng Funing. I still don’t know what, since my mother rarely speaks of it.”
Indeed, she hadn’t found much about it in the original host’s memories. Before Lin Yanyu’s return, the original soul had been fragmented timid and unstable and since those were matters of the previous generation, her mother had chosen silence.
But according to Qin Changxin, in the previous timeline, the Demon Lord had told Xuanlin everything. Perhaps that was why Xiao Xianyi had killed her so ruthlessly.
Hearing this, Feng Mingchi’s expression grew serious. He put down his chopsticks and gently patted Lin Yanyu’s head.
“Good child. I know that what happened between Lin’er and your mother wasn’t as the rumors claim,” he said kindly. “By seniority, you may call me ‘Uncle’ too. If you wish for me to accompany you, I’ll gladly do so.”
And so, the journey to the Demon Realm was decided.
After packing, Lin Yanyu and Qin went to meet Feng Mingchi again. When they arrived, he was chatting with Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei.
“That blood leopard’s been trouble since twenty years ago,” Feng Mingchi reminisced, stroking the white cat in his arms. “He led a pack of rebellious winged demons in Ningzhou and made a mess. Lin’er was on a mission then, so Xuanqing beat them all senseless instead. Ever since, those bird demons shake whenever they see a black cat.”
Lin Yanyu blinked suddenly remembering that bird demon she’d caught in Ningzhou earlier.
When it saw her, it had immediately cursed her as “that damned cat demon again!” apparently, the trauma went back two decades!
When he saw them enter, Feng Mingchi smiled. “All ready?”
“Yes we can leave anytime,” Qin nodded.
“Oh, and Sister Zhuang and I talked,” Feng Xianchen piped up. “We’ve given Uncle the White Jade Pendant for safekeeping. We’re heading to Lianzhou in a few days to scout ahead, and it’s not safe to keep it with me but Uncle’s super reliable!”
She hesitated, then shyly turned to Lin Yanyu. “Please give it to your mother as… a meeting gift from me, okay?”
Feng Mingchi chuckled. “That White Jade was split by your own mother half for the human world, half for the demon realm. The half you hold belongs to the Feng family anyway. Hardly counts as a gift.”
“Then… how about this?” Feng Xianchen’s cheeks reddened, but she quickly summoned a giant fluffy cat nest, so soft that even Zhuang Jingwei was stunned. “After Uncle told me my other mother was a cat demon, I started making this. Cats in the human realm love these I hope those in the Demon Realm will too.”
“It’s the thought that matters.” Lin Yanyu accepted the cat nest and stored it in her jade pendant. “I’ll make sure it reaches her.”
Feng Xianchen’s eyes curved into bright smiles. “Then that’s perfect! Please send my regards to your mother too! Last time in the Demon Realm, I was too shy to meet Lady Xuanqing…”
“There’ll be another chance,” Lin Yanyu said gently, noticing the flicker of wistfulness in the girl’s eyes. She reached out and ruffled her hair. “Next time, I’ll be your tour guide.”
“It’s a deal!” Feng Xianchen grinned, hooking pinkies with her. Then she turned to her uncle. “Uncle, you must take good care of Sister Lin and Sister Changxin, okay?”
