- Chapter 68 - The Beauty Stopping Formation
Seeing the young girl smiling through her tears, Lin Yanyu hurriedly took out a handkerchief to wipe them away.
“Would you like to tell me everything in detail?” Lin Yanyu asked softly. “I’ll listen carefully.”
When she saw Qin Changxin nod, Lin Yanyu immediately went outside to explain the situation to Zhuang Jingwei and the others, then returned to draw a screen and set up a soundproof barrier.
“Go ahead,” Lin Yanyu said as she pulled up a stool beside the bed. “Senior Feng Mingchi said you were trapped in an illusion. I think… perhaps when you were drunk, you accidentally touched the white jade pendant at my waist, and that drew back the memories sealed inside it only for those same memories to trap you.”
“How did you know my memories were sealed inside the white jade?” Qin Changxin asked in surprise.
“Because I entered your dream once… and saw your past life,” Lin Yanyu said, choosing her words carefully. “No perhaps not your past life exactly…”
“Then what I saw in my dream might also have been your past self,” Qin Changxin replied, picking up her thread of thought. “Or rather, the incomplete-souled Xuan Lin.”
Lin Yanyu fell silent instantly, her cat ears twitching flat against her head.
So it was finally coming to this. In the original novel, this same girl had been betrayed by Xuan Lin and driven to darkness.
Staring at Qin Changxin’s red, tear-stained eyes, Lin Yanyu took a deep breath, braced herself for questioning, and said solemnly, “Please go on.”
What she heard next, however, was a story completely different from the original novel.
According to Qin Changxin, the demon realm’s young master Xuan Lin was actually an innocent, softhearted soul almost childlike and prone to tears. His speech patterns and little habits were strikingly similar to Lin Yanyu’s own. He had no arrogance of a demon noble and was incredibly kind to his companions obedient to the point of being unbelievable.
By the time Qin Changxin finished, Lin Yanyu didn’t know whether to sigh in relief or feel conflicted.
So the events she had “read” from the book didn’t match the real story at all!
Then that meant she’d been ridiculously bold running around and pushing the plot forward based on a novel’s falsehoods!
Thankfully, only the opening event “Xuan Lin’s death” had changed dramatically. The later incidents on Que Ling Island and Lianzhou still aligned well enough. It seemed that only the main couple’s love story had truly diverged.
With that realization, Lin Yanyu patted her chest, then looked apologetically at Qin Changxin. “I’m really sorry. The memories I inherited stop before I ever met you. The white jade didn’t preserve the parts you’ve described.”
After seeing the “past-life” version of Qin Changxin in her dream, Lin Yanyu had quickly accepted her true identity.
After all, compared to her previous world, the ties she had here were much stronger. Perhaps she should thank the eccentric exorcist who raised her who’d never let her touch anything except missions and fantasy novels so she’d never formed much attachment to her old world.
But Qin Changxin didn’t seem disappointed. She only smiled gently and said, “It’s enough that your soul is whole again, and that we can be together once more.”
She slowly sat up and opened her arms.
Lin Yanyu understood immediately. She shifted into her cat form and leapt into Qin Changxin’s embrace, rubbing her face against her chest.
“You know, while you were unconscious, I’ve been treating you all along,” Lin Yanyu said, pressing her paw gently on Qin Changxin’s abdomen. “Try circulating your spiritual energy you’ll feel how much you’ve recovered.”
“No rush,” Qin Changxin said, turning the cat over and rubbing her soft belly.
Lin Yanyu instinctively curled up, letting her limbs fold inward as she purred contentedly.
“Do you remember that night we had hotpot?” Lin Yanyu reminisced. “You got drunk. You wanted to rub my belly, and I let you but afterward, you said I felt hairless!”
“I remember.” Qin Changxin stroked along her fur, smiling. “You were wearing black that night. I thought you’d turned back into a cat, but it was just your clothing smooth and silky.”
“That’s because I’d overeaten!” Lin Yanyu giggled. “See? Now you’re touching the real fluffy belly.”
With her worries gone, Qin Changxin found even greater joy in cuddling her. After a long belly-rubbing session, she picked the cat up and buried her face in the fur.
“So fragrant,” she murmured. “What flower is this scent?”
“It’s actually a special ‘Awakening Incense’ made by the Feng family,” Lin Yanyu explained. “It helps one escape illusions faster. I swapped your pillow for one infused with it. I’ve been napping beside it these past days, so the scent probably rubbed off on me.”
“I never smelled it on the pillow,” Qin Changxin mused. “But I’ve read that once this incense takes effect, its fragrance fades.”
Lin Yanyu nodded. Qin Changxin then tapped her fingers gently, channeling a thin aura to gather the last traces of scent from the cat’s fur.
“You stayed awake for seven days straight thanks to this incense, didn’t you?” Qin Changxin said softly, patting the cat. “Now that I’m awake, it’s your turn to rest.”
Lin Yanyu blinked. She hadn’t realized it, but she had been unusually energetic since changing that pillow. Now, as Qin Changxin sealed away the incense’s effects, she suddenly yawned and felt her eyelids grow heavy. Curling up comfortably in Qin Changxin’s arms, she quickly drifted off.
Qin Changxin let her rest for the whole afternoon, using the time to check her own condition.
Thanks to Lin Yanyu’s careful care and her seven days of deep sleep, her internal injuries were now fully healed. She circulated her energy through nine full cycles without feeling the slightest discomfort.
During that time, Feng Xianchen came by once, saying his uncle had discovered that Lin Yanyu’s jade pendant emitted spiritual waves capable of forming illusions likely left by a Silver Orchid rank exorcist. Though not harmful, all attempts by others to enter it had failed.
“My uncle said I should give you my own half of the jade,” Feng Xianchen added, pressing his pendant into her hand. “Maybe only you can access the illusion inside. There could be… a legacy waiting for you.”
“A legacy?” Qin Changxin echoed. “Was that your uncle’s exact wording?”
“Not exactly,” Feng Xianchen admitted. “He said something about ‘the memories of our predecessors.’ But isn’t that basically the same thing as a legacy?”
Her heart skipped. After a pause, she said, “I just woke from an illusion. My spirit needs time to recover. Once I’m ready, I’ll examine it carefully. Is that alright?”
“Of course! There’s no rush,” Feng Xianchen said cheerfully. “You should spend more time with Sister Lin anyway I’ve got things to do.”
Qin Changxin decided not to tell anyone but Lin Yanyu about her restored memories.
With her soul complete and Lin Yanyu now trained in exorcist arts at her side, everything was proceeding smoothly. But since Xiao Xianyi had taken control of Yang Hengyu as his puppet something that hadn’t happened in the previous timeline they couldn’t simply follow the same plan to capture him.
The fewer people who knew she had regained her memories, the safer it would be. She’d discuss with Lin Yanyu later how best to warn their allies without revealing the truth.
Even without the Awakening Incense’s help, Lin Yanyu didn’t sleep long. Before dinner, she awoke to find Qin Changxin sitting at the desk beside the bed, reading thick, ancient looking books.
Stretching, Lin Yanyu padded to the end of the bed, gathered aura under her paws, and leapt lightly onto the desk’s empty corner. “Meow!” she called.
Qin Changxin, absorbed in her studies, looked up at the sound, smiling as she scooped up the cat and petted her head. Pointing at the text, she said, “I’m looking up records about the Huixing Sword.”
“Found anything?” Lin Yanyu asked.
“The texts call it a ‘thing from beyond the heavens,’” Qin Changxin replied. “Like you, it doesn’t belong to this world. But the records don’t state its true origin.”
She sighed softly. “Well, this world is but a fragment among the infinite realms. Since ancient times, no one has ever pierced the void to go beyond.”
“In my original world, people could already leave their planet using flying machines,” Lin Yanyu said. “They explored the whole universe. But my guardian used to say even that universe might only be one small corner of the multiverse. There were often travelers between worlds, many of our advanced technologies and magical arts came from them. That’s why our world developed so fast.”
“What a wonderful place,” Qin Changxin said wistfully. “But here, there’s only one Huixing Sword capable of tearing through space-time like that. Unfortunately, I’m bound to it by enmity it’s still out there, and hasn’t chosen a new master.”
“If it’s gained a will of its own and still serves evil,” Lin Yanyu said firmly, “then for the sake of this realm, we must destroy it again!”
The two joined their palms and solemnly chanted together: “Amitabha.”
“I already understand what’s about to happen in Lianzhou,” Qin Changxin said as she set an isolation barrier around them. “Princess Yun Quexin of Lianzhou, desperate to remain young, listened to Xiao Xianyi’s lies. She’s gathered cat demons from across the region to serve as living sacrifices, and will soon activate the Beauty Stopping Formation. In truth, this is a wicked ritual Xiao Xianyi intends to use to resurrect the great demon king executed by the Demon Lord himself.”
“The great demon king don’t tell me it was an orange cat demon?” Lin Yanyu asked knowingly. “That orange fur cloak Ye Yaozhi wears was made from one. Her name was…”
“Zhu Wansheng,” Qin Changxin finished. “Her body was destroyed by the Demon Lord long ago, but Xiao Xianyi kept her soul. According to my memories, she’ll possess Yun Quexin’s body and use her royal status to make things easy for him.”
“That means Lianzhou’s demon lands will soon fall like Que Ling Island did,” Lin Yanyu said, tucking her paws under her chest. “While you were asleep, the Sixth Elder sent scouts there but if the formation’s inside the royal palace, they’ll never find it.”
“Then we must go ourselves,” Qin Changxin said, lifting the cat in her arms and walking to the window. “There are four great exorcist families in Zhu State Feng, Zhuang, Qin, and Lu. If the heirs of all four go to investigate together, even the royal family will have no choice but to let us through.”
