- Chapter 70 - The Lord of the Demon Realm
After bidding farewell to Chu Hanzi, Lin Yanyu and her two companions took the teleportation array back to Bamboo Prefecture.
Qin Changxin had left her two letters at the courier station of Kuixuan Academy. Since they were heading to the Demon Realm, it was better not to draw attention. According to Lin Yanyu’s estimate, by the time they returned, the Lu family should have already met up with Feng and Zhuang, who were scouting in Lotus Prefecture.
There were four teleportation arrays in Bamboo Prefecture, and the one Qin Changxin chose happened to be near the Feng family estate, so it wasn’t long before they arrived there.
“The demon horse has been handed over to a beast tamer for care. Your carriage is in Warehouse No. 3,” said Feng Mingchi, handing Lin Yanyu a key. “I still have something to fetch, so take this key and retrieve your horse and carriage first.”
After half a month apart, the demon horse had grown noticeably fatter. When they arrived, the beast tamer was feeding it dry hay.
The horse, head down in the trough, immediately perked up upon sensing a familiar aura. It neighed happily at Lin Yanyu.
“Looks like you’ve been enjoying life here at the Feng residence,” Lin Yanyu teased, showing the beast tamer her key before stepping forward to pat the horse’s head. “You’ll have to work hard tonight we’re going home.”
The demon horse nodded vigorously and shoved its muzzle back into the trough to eat a few more mouthfuls for strength.
In the warehouse, Lin Yanyu took a bit of time before finally locating the carriage.
“Senior Feng hid Mother’s aura really well,” Lin Yanyu said admiringly as she dragged the carriage out. “Leaving it here was definitely the right choice.”
Qin Changxin was about to help, but seeing the cat-girl easily pulling the heavy carriage alone, she quietly tucked her hands back into her sleeves.
“Not damaged, not dusty perfect,” Lin Yanyu said after inspecting it inside and out. Climbing out of the carriage, she invited, “Changxin, sit inside. I’ll pull you out.”
“I can’t possibly!” Qin Changxin protested, waving her hands. “I can help push, at least.”
“It’s fine. Just think of it as your kitty being too excited and wanting to carry you for fun.”
Lin Yanyu didn’t let her argue further she scooped her into the carriage, sat her down, and before jumping out again, leaned in to steal a quick kiss on her lips.
“You!” Qin Changxin’s face turned scarlet, but before she could speak, the cat slipped out and dropped the curtain.
Helpless, Qin Changxin wiped her lips and her burning cheeks, thinking she’d better start setting some limits on this cat’s teasing habits.
The carriage soon began to move smoothly. Seated on the soft cushions, Qin Changxin could tell how steady the ride was.
“The streets are quiet this late just the night patrols around. You’ll like it,” Lin Yanyu called from the front. “Once we’re outside the city, want to come sit with me up front?”
“Wouldn’t that trouble you? I’m human, after all,” Qin Changxin asked hesitantly.
“What trouble? You’re the future consort of the young lord!” Lin Yanyu replied playfully. “Even if a demon dislikes you, wouldn’t they smell your scent first? Be confident, my little girlfriend”
Qin Changxin couldn’t help smiling, lifting the curtain to peek outside. The carriage had already left the Feng estate.
“Alright then,” she said softly.
While the beast tamer was harnessing the demon horse, Lin Yanyu sat at the front of the carriage and asked,
“Our A-Ji didn’t cause you any trouble, did he?”
A-Ji was the nickname Xuan Lin had given the demon horse.
“Not at all! Your horse is very well-behaved,” the tamer laughed. “Though he has quite the taste for meat. That’s not healthy for his kind, so I mixed some imitation meat with herbs. He loved it!”
The horse neighed twice. Lin Yanyu chuckled.
“He says he knew it was fake, but it was tasty, so he didn’t mind.”
“Clever little thing,” the tamer said, rubbing the horse’s mane affectionately.
Qin Changxin climbed down from the carriage just as Feng Mingchi returned with the item he’d gone to fetch. When their eyes met, she bowed politely.
“Senior, Yanyu invited me to sit in front. Please, get in the carriage first.”
“Alright,” he said knowingly. Having seen enough lovebirds before, he understood their wish for privacy and climbed in without protest.
Soon, the carriage was rolling toward the city gates.
With Qin Changxin’s token, the gate guards demon hunters let them through without question.
Beyond Bamboo Prefecture, the road to the Demon Realm stretched ahead in silence. Because the city’s curfew forbade commoners from leaving at night, there were few patrols outside and correspondingly, more wild demons. Most of them hunted only at night.
But once they left the city, Feng Mingchi removed the concealment spell hiding his aura as the Demon Realm’s lord instantly ensuring that no wild demon dared approach.
Only when Lin Yanyu activated the Blood-Soaked White Jade to enter the Demon Realm did Qin Changxin finally relax then realized she had been gripping Lin Yanyu’s hand tightly enough to leave red marks.
“I’m sorry I was too tense. I hurt you,” she said quickly.
“For demons, if there’s no blood, it doesn’t count as an injury,” Lin Yanyu half-joked. “Want to pet my tail to calm down?”
Before Qin Changxin could answer, the cat had already curled her tail into the girl’s lap.
“Doesn’t that tickle?” Qin Changxin asked, looking down.
“When I consciously offer my tail, I can temporarily block its sensation,” Lin Yanyu explained. “If you like, you can touch it anytime just warn me first.”
Reassured, Qin Changxin gently stroked the soft fur from base to tip.
Even though the tail couldn’t feel, Lin Yanyu still controlled its movements, flicking it playfully now and then to amuse her.
But before long, Feng Mingchi’s voice cut through the calm:
“The Demon Lord is here!”
Qin Changxin’s hand froze. She immediately let go of the tail and tucked it behind Lin Yanyu.
Looking forward, Lin Yanyu saw a tall figure waiting under the night sky. Two sleek black cat tails swayed lazily behind her. Her hands were tucked into her sleeves, and her glowing green pupils watched them approach with quiet intensity.
This was Lin Yanyu’s first time, since returning, seeing the Demon Realm’s ruler Xuan Qing in person.
A twin-tailed black cat demon though one tail had reverted to its ordinary form, now serving only as decoration.
Even from a distance, Lin Yanyu reined in the horse and called out loudly,
“Mother! I’m back!”
Xuan Qing’s figure vanished instantly, reappearing beside the carriage a heartbeat later. She reached out and pinched her daughter’s cheek.
“How could you leave the Demon Realm for so long?” she chided softly. “Do you know how worried I was?”
Her touch wasn’t harsh, but Lin Yanyu still let out a little yelp, leaning into her mother’s palm with a flick of her tail.
“I know I was wrong… That’s why I came back to see you!”
“Your tongue grows sweeter by the day!” Xuan Qing sighed fondly, ruffling her hair. With a flick of her hand, a teleportation array appeared beneath the carriage.
From the moment Xuan Qing approached, Qin Changxin had felt all the surrounding spiritual energy lock tightly around her. Even though she had met this woman many times within the memory illusion, facing her in reality was far more daunting.
After all, in this life, Qin Changxin had become the master of the Demon Realm’s young lord binding her by blood contract as her personal guard. Xuan Qing would hardly take that lightly.
The teleportation array carried all four of them and the carriage directly to the courtyard outside Xuan Qing’s icy blue palace.
Lifting the curtain herself, Xuan Qing motioned for Feng Mingchi to disembark first.
“Please rest in the guest hall for now,” she said.
“You’re not trying to send me away so you can scold this little demon hunter, are you?” he teased.
“Rest assured,” Xuan Qing replied coolly. “I am, after all, the widow of a human demon hunter. Why would I harm a human?”
“These two have faced life and death together their bond rivals yours and Lin’er’s,” he reminded her, smiling, before following the attendants to the guest hall.
As soon as he left, Lin Yanyu quickly conjured a fluffy cat bed, offering it up like a peace offering.
“Mother, this was handmade by Little Sister. She asked me to bring it to you!”
Xuan Qing blinked in surprise.
“She didn’t come with you?”
“She has a mission right now, but I told her I’d bring her to see you later.” Lin Yanyu then presented a dark feather. “This is from Lady Pu Wei of the Island of Plumes she said she once promised it to you.”
Catching the scent of an old friend, sorrow flickered in Xuan Qing’s eyes, but she blinked it away, regaining her composure. Hugging the cat bed, she turned and said only,
“Come with me.”
Her figure flashed, and the next instant she stood at the entrance of her bedchamber, stepping inside without looking back.
Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin exchanged a glance and hurried after her.
“Don’t worry, Mother’s temper is gentle,” Lin Yanyu whispered, squeezing the girl’s hand reassuringly. “I’ll explain the blood contract myself she won’t wrong you.”
Qin Changxin smiled faintly, remembering how the cat had always protected her even in the illusion.
“I’m not afraid,” she said.
The Demon Lord’s palace was much grander than the young lord’s, but they hadn’t gone far before being stopped in the front hall by Mei Linghan, the lady in waiting.
“Please have some tea first,” Mei Linghan said, gracefully pouring for them.
Lin Yanyu soon recalled from Xuan Lin’s memories who this was a black cat demon with four snow-white paws humans called her Clouds on Snow. She had served Xuan Qing since childhood and was as close as a sister.
“Aunt Mei, what’s Mother doing?” Lin Yanyu asked, holding her teacup.
“I’m not sure,” Mei Linghan replied. “But when the Demon Lord entered, she was holding a rather large ‘container’ she took it into her bedroom.”
“Ah! That must be the cat bed my sister made!” Lin Yanyu exclaimed loudly, pretending delight. “Looks like Mother really likes it!”
“A cat bed?” Mei Linghan blinked. “But we are demons, not beasts. We sleep on couches, not”
“You only say that in front of the young ones,” came Xuan Qing’s amused voice from behind. “Tomorrow, when I’m not around, you’ll probably sneak in and curl up in it yourself. Don’t think I don’t know.”
