Yu Tingzheng is an unremarkable village youth a simple farmhand who spends his days working the fields and speaks with a heavy stutter. When a wealthy family moves into the village, he finds himself blushing every time he catches a glimpse of their young master, a boy with lips as red as cinnabar and skin as white as jade.

To his shock, his parents sell him to that very family for seventy taels of silver. From that day forward, his life becomes entwined with the young master’s. Initially, Yu Tingzheng assumed they would be brothers, only to discover that he had been purchased as a “bride” to perform a chongxi ritual an auspicious marriage intended to ward off the young master’s lingering illness.

Young Master Pei Qingyu is as delicate as fine porcelain, fragile and prone to frequent bouts of sickness. He possesses a prickly temperament and often snaps at Tingzheng, only to later deny his own temper. Poor Yu Tingzheng finds himself moved to tears at least twice a day.

However, after a brief period of separation, the young master suddenly becomes incredibly clingy, constantly seeking warmth in Tingzheng’s arms. The sharp words cease, replaced by newfound kindness.

Yu Tingzheng wonders: Can such good fortune really exist?

Thinking more distance might further improve their relationship, he attempts to leave again. But before he can even get far, Pei Qingyu pursues him with reddened eyes, glaring indignantly. “You’re going to abandon me again!” he cries.

While everyone else finds the young master impossible to serve, Yu Tingzheng manages to keep him perfectly content and well-tempered.
