- Chapter 15 - The Invitation
Ding—
The elevator doors opened. Song Yunran, who had been looking down at her phone, sensed something and slowly raised her head. The first thing she saw was a line of text: I am not a salted fish.
These large, crooked characters printed on a white T-shirt barged into Song Yunran’s field of vision. As her gaze drifted upward, she finally saw the face of the person wearing the shirt.
It was a beautiful face with symmetrical beauty marks at the outer corners of both eyes a quite unique feature.
Two months ago, when she first saw this face, she hadn’t felt much of anything. But now, she found it very cute. The face was small and delicate, the features were exquisite, and the eyes were large and bright. In short, she was extremely cute.
Right now, this “cute-in-every-way” person was standing stiffly at the elevator entrance, looking at her expectantly.
Song Yunran paused and turned off her phone. This action caused the photo she had been staring at for a long time to vanish from the screen.
One of the people in that group photo was currently standing right in front of her.
“Luo Luo, do you need to use the elevator?” Song Yunran curled the corners of her mouth and asked with a smile.
Xu Luo didn’t actually need the elevator. The only reason she was standing there was because she saw the elevator floor numbers moving and knew Song Yunran was back; her feet had spontaneously moved her there to act as a “welcome lady.”
She didn’t need the elevator, a fact she only just realized herself. Asked this question, she fell silent for a moment before replying, “It wouldn’t hurt to use it.”
And so, she pushed Song Yunran out of the elevator, stepped inside herself, pressed the button for the first basement floor, and then came right back up.
Song Yunran watched the elevator indicator go down to the basement and quickly return. She then watched Xu Luo walk out and heard her say, “I’m done using it.”
Song Yunran: “…”
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Is this a new hobby Luo Luo has developed?”
Xu Luo let out an “Ah” and asked in return, “Do you think I’m stupid?”
“No,” Song Yunran denied. She said, “I think you are very cute.”
Xu Luo took this statement as sincere.
She hoped it was sincere.
She asked, “Can a cute person be forgiven no matter what they do?”
Song Yunran’s gaze turned a bit deeper as she asked, “What has Luo Luo done that requires forgiveness?”
Xu Luo said, “Luo Luo hasn’t done anything. Luo Luo just hopes that she will always be forgiven.”
Song Yunran burst out laughing. She reached up to brush her hair, tucking her long strands behind her ear to reveal a perfect jawline. She spoke: “Okay.”
It was just a short, single word, but her voice at that moment sounded as if it had been soaked in deep-sea water imbued with the ocean’s capacity for tolerance and the unique, tranquil tenderness of the deep.
Xu Luo was dazed for a split second.
Two hours ago, she had learned from Zhou Miao what Zhou Miao had done, and she nearly coughed up blood on the spot. She felt so wronged! Her relationship with Song Yunran had only just begun to ease, and now she might be caught in the crossfire because of Zhou Miao’s provocation!
After returning home, she had been thinking about this constantly.
She wanted to know how Song Yunran viewed her, which was why her reflexes had kicked in to greet her when she got home… it was a small test.
But Xu Luo never expected that the conversation would go in this direction. The current Song Yunran was too gentle so gentle that even the perceptively sharp Xu Luo couldn’t tell if the other woman was acting or if she had truly made a doting promise.
Xu Luo opened her mouth, hesitated, and in the end, simply stared blankly at the beautiful woman in the wheelchair.
Being stared at like that, there was no way Song Yunran wouldn’t notice. She met Xu Luo’s gaze, the corners of her mouth tilting up slightly as she asked, “Am I good-looking?”
Xu Luo nodded. “Good-looking.”
Song Yunran reciprocated the praise: “Luo Luo is also good-looking.”
The conversation ended amidst their mutual compliments. The weather was clear and the world was at peace. Afterward, Xu Luo went to the second floor to pet the cat, while Song Yunran returned to her third-floor bedroom. Nothing happened on the second floor, but on the third…
On the third floor, Song Yunran took a shower and changed into comfortable clothes. When she went to reach for a book on the nightstand, she noticed something peeking out from under the thin quilt on the bed. She lifted the cover and saw a giant photograph covering her bed.
It was of Zhou Miao.
Specifically, it was a photo of Zhou Miao getting hit in the face with a cat bed.
Two hours prior:
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing much, just sending Song Yunran a testimony of our beautiful friendship.”
Xu Luo had grabbed a nearby sunflower-shaped cat bed one that had been dampened by some cat’s urine and smashed it right into Zhou Miao’s face. In that split second, she snapped a ten-shot burst of photos. She applied special effects, did some photo editing, and then chose a photo studio to print out the most “distinctive” photo to place on Song Yunran’s bed, hidden under the quilt.
Xu Luo was using her actual actions to tell Song Yunran: She and Zhou Miao were not on the same side.
There was no “friendship” to speak of.
After staring wordlessly at the “Zhou Miao” on the bed for a long time, Song Yunran: “…”
The next day, Xu Luo didn’t sense any “dark aura” coming from Song Yunran. She thought to herself that the photo must have proven her innocence.
The third day, Xu Luo still didn’t sense any dark aura from Song Yunran. She felt that her “fish head” was still securely attached to her neck.
On the fourth day, Xu Luo was woken up early by noises downstairs. She poked her head out the window and discovered a group of workers cleaning the swimming pool in the backyard.
The villa the Song family had given to Song Yunran came with a pool. However, because the owner, Song Yunran, had mobility issues and had nothing to do with swimming or playing in the water, the pool had gone unused for many years and was neglected. Xu Luo had noticed the pool long ago she was a fish, she loved water and had once entertained thoughts about it, but suppressed them out of consideration for Song Yunran’s situation.
But now…?
Her sleepiness vanished instantly. Xu Luo leaned on the windowsill, her large eyes wide as she watched the workers coming and going with professional tools to clean the pool. After watching for about half an hour, Song Yunran appeared by the poolside and exchanged a few words with the foreman.
“Song Yunran!” Xu Luo shouted from upstairs.
Hearing the voice, Song Yunran tilted her head up. The morning light arrived just in time to fall upon her face. She saw Xu Luo and smiled brightly. “Luo Luo.”
Xu Luo rested her face on her arms and asked, “Are you planning to clean up the pool at home?”
Song Yunran spoke softly to the worker beside her for a moment, and once the worker left, she replied to Xu Luo, “Yes. The weather is getting hot. Once the pool is cleaned, Luo Luo can play in the water here. And…”
Xu Luo was already jumping for joy at the words “play in the water.” “And what?”
Song Yunran smiled. “And we can also invite a few friends over to play.”
Xu Luo was surprised. “Friends?”
Whose friends?
Song Yunran’s friends?
Xu Luo searched her memory of the original novel but couldn’t find anyone who could be called a friend of Song Yunran. The female lead of the original story seemed like a candidate, but if they were truly friends, Song Yunran probably wouldn’t have been so heartless…
Probably.
After all, one couldn’t evaluate Song Yunran’s actions from a normal person’s perspective.
Xu Luo pulled her thoughts back and didn’t think too much further. Her heart was set entirely on the pool. Happily swinging her legs, she asked, “So when will the pool be ready?”
Song Yunran looked to a worker for the answer. The worker replied that it could be used by tonight if they worked fast, it would be ready before dusk.
Xu Luo was even happier. Seeing Auntie Li from the kitchen coming to cook, she ran over to make a date with her to go to the supermarket. She was going to buy a watermelon a big watermelon to eat while playing in the water tonight!
After a whole day of anticipation, by dusk, the pool was finally cleaned and filled with water.
Xu Luo was happily heading to the fridge to grab her watermelon when she heard the sound of a car horn. She walked out of the villa in confusion and saw the flashy rear end of a red Ferrari disappear into the garage. A moment later, a… strange person wearing an anime-style “moe girl” T-shirt and wearing cat ears on their head walked into the courtyard.
Xu Luo remained silent for a few seconds, pretending she hadn’t seen anything, and turned to go back inside.
“Hey, dear friend, aren’t you going to say hello to me before you leave?” The visitor pinched her own cat ears.
Xu Luo: “…”
She looked at the person approaching, her teeth aching. “Zhou Miao, why are you here?”
As Zhou Miao got closer, she took the cat-ear headband off her head and casually clipped it onto Xu Luo’s head, grinning to reveal two rows of little white teeth. “Your Beauty Song invited me personally.”
She continued, “She was probably moved by our deep friendship. Seeing how much you missed me, she called me over.”
Xu Luo didn’t miss this person named Zhou at all, nor did she think there was anything normal about Song Yunran inviting Zhou Miao. She had a bad feeling.
So the “friend” Song Yunran mentioned turned out to be Zhou Miao…
“Zhou Miao, I’m being serious.” Xu Luo ripped the cat ears off and threw them into Zhou Miao’s arms. “I think it would be better if you left immediately.”
Zhou Miao put the headband back on her own head and chirped, “No.”
With that, she walked toward the villa, saying as she went, “Where’s the pool? Didn’t she invite me here to play in the water?”
Entering the villa, she saw Song Yunran reading a book.
Her footsteps faltered slightly, and her smile faded a bit.
Zhou Miao had received the invitation from Song Yunran yesterday to come play in the water.
Song Yunran’s exact words in the text were: The pool at home that has been abandoned for many years has been reorganized this summer. Miss Zhou lives not far from us, right? Come play in the water when you have time.
This message revealed one thing: Song Yunran knew where she lived. However, she had only recently changed her residence and hadn’t told anyone except her family.
This was clearly not a friendly notice.
Zhou Miao knew, of course from the moment she sent that provocative photo, she knew Song Yunran would come looking for her.
She actually quite wanted to see just how “crazy” Song Yunran could get.
“Zhou Miao—” Song Yunran looked up and saw the guest, putting down the book in her hand.
Today, she was wearing a well-tailored custom suit. She didn’t usually dress like this at home; today was an exception.
She smiled slightly, her aura not particularly sharp. She said, “You’ve come.”
Zhou Miao subconsciously toyed with the cat ears on her head. “Yeah, I’ve come.”
After she spoke, the two of them stared at each other. The lingering silence made the air between them feel slightly scorched, as if sparks were hidden just beneath the surface.
In the silence, someone poked half their body into the room from outside the villa, ignoring the heavy, tense atmosphere of the room. She chimed in:
“And she didn’t even bring a gift. She came empty-handed.”
Xu Luo, leaning in, grumbled, “That’s a bit impolite, don’t you think?”
Song Yunran: “…”
Zhou Miao: “…”
