- Chapter 14 - The Photo
Once Xu Luo picked up the cat, she didn’t waste a single moment and fled the hospital as fast as she could. The chubby orange cat inside the carrier had no idea what she was feeling; it simply sprawled out like a pancake, occasionally rolling over with pure laziness.
Xu Luo didn’t get along with this cat. No matter how she looked at it, she found it eyesore. Through the iron mesh door of the carrier, she vented her frustration by poking its fat backside.
The cat was a piece of work, too. Even though it had taken a trip to the hospital and ended up a chubby cripple, it hadn’t learned how to act weak. It maintained its haughty, “begging to be petted” attitude.
Xu Luo grew annoyed watching it and poked it a few more times.
Beside her, Song Yunran was working on her laptop. Looking up to see this scene, a hint of helplessness touched the corners of her mouth. “How have you ended up picking a fight with a cat?”
Xu Luo glared. “It’s because its face is irritating.”
Song Yunran looked at the cat. Although she saw it often, she had never really paid attention to what it looked like, as her focus was always on Xu Luo.
The cat had a coat of orange fur not exactly a rare skin and it was far too fat for its young age, even having a chubby face.
Song Yunran judged that the cat was actually quite cute.
She calmly withdrew her gaze, disinterested.
While her look toward the cat was cold, the smile on her lips was warm. She laughed softly and said, “I think it looks quite nice.”
True to her reputation as a “tattletale” labeled by Zhou Miao, Xu Luo complained, “It judges people by their status!”
When dealing with her, the cat was as fierce as could be, yet out in the world, it let itself get into such a miserable state. It had wasted those long, boxer-like legs just to jump over the Song family’s courtyard walls; it didn’t even know how to scratch people!
Tsk, now it’s a little cripple.
Xu Luo spoke with disdain, but her eyes were soft as she looked at the cat. Song Yunran saw through her but didn’t say anything, lowering her head to continue processing company documents.
Back at the Song family villa, when the Bentley carrying Xu and Song stopped in the underground garage, Xu Luo who was about to get out heard a “ding.” A young man wearing a T-shirt and shorts stepped out of the elevator carrying a toolbox and unhurriedly got into an SUV in the garage.
Xu Luo’s movements slowed for a moment. Watching the stranger drive away, she instinctively asked Song Yunran, “Who was that?”
Song Yunran took a glance and said, “Probably a worker here to set up the cat room.”
Xu Luo froze. “Cat room?”
“Yes,” Song Yunran said. “It’s in the room right next to yours on the second floor.”
Xu Luo: “???”
Seeing her stunned expression, Song Yunran smiled. “Didn’t Luo Luo plan to adopt this cat? I thought that if we’re keeping a cat, we should set things up properly, so I called someone in advance.”
“Eh? How did you know I wanted to adopt it?!”
Xu Luo did indeed have that intention, but she hadn’t disclosed it to anyone yet.
Song Yunran smiled but said nothing.
Of course she knew. It was because the person before her this stranger’s soul occupying her partner’s body was incredibly soft-hearted. She knew this deeply because she had experienced it firsthand.
“You don’t object?” Xu Luo asked. She had the idea, but if Song Yunran opposed it, she would have found another way. In short, Song Yunran’s opinion mattered greatly, as Song Yunran was the true owner of this villa.
Song Yunran, the owner of the house, did not mind. She stated, “It’s nice to have a cat at home. Mother-in-law likes cats too; she often feeds the ones around here.”
“That’s good then!”
Song Yunran looked at the cat and asked, “Luo Luo, aren’t you going to give it a name?”
“I already did!”
“What is it?”
“Xiao Huang (Little Yellow).”
Song Yunran complimented her without blinking. “A good name.”
Xu Luo felt quite encouraged. “Not to brag, but I do have some artistic cells in me. Picking a name is no trouble at all.”
Song Yunran: “…Mm.”
Xu Luo went upstairs and saw the cat room Song Yunran had mentioned. The room was converted from a previously vacant guest room. The windows had been fully secured, and the room was filled with various cat toys and set after set of installed cat climbing frames. It was incredibly luxurious.
Xu Luo stood there dumbfounded. After a long while, she looked down at the cat in the carrier. “…Comrade Xiao Huang, you’re just a local cat; what did you do to deserve this?”
“Better be a bit more adorable for the rest of your life, otherwise, how can you live up to the money others spent on you?” She began giving the cat a pep talk on the spot.
As a fish, Xu Luo had never imagined she would work like an ox or a horse for a cat, and after living this way for a while, she even felt a bit of enjoyment in it. She was probably the number one fish in the world of self-manipulation; she had perfectly “PUA-ed” herself.
A week after bringing Xiao Huang home, Xu Luo received a message from the hospital doctor asking her to come and pick up some supplementary medicine. Indeed, Xiao Huang hadn’t fully recovered yet—its leg was broken, after all, so it wouldn’t heal that quickly; it had just been allowed to go home to recuperate.
Upon receiving the message, Xu Luo went to the hospital immediately. She had been there several times and knew her way around, quickly getting the medicine.
As she was holding the medicine and preparing to leave, she caught a glimpse of a cat in an isolation cage in the lobby.
It was another yellow-furred cat, also fitting the name “Xiao Huang.” They both had yellow fur, but this one somehow looked more noble than her own Xiao Huang. With one blink of its round green eyes, it instantly made one feel the weight of the word “beauty.”
Xu Luo was momentarily seduced by its looks and unconsciously walked over to the isolation cage.
She stared at the cat, and the cat stared back at her.
She was staring so intently she didn’t notice the owner appearing behind her, whispering into her ear like a ghost:
“Do you have a problem with my cat?”
Xu Luo turned her head at the sound and met a face she knew all too well.
Zhou Miao’s.
“This is your cat?” Xu Luo asked. She and Zhou Miao weren’t friends, but they weren’t mortal enemies either. Seeing her didn’t cause much of an emotional stir.
Zhou Miao opened the cage, pulled the cat out, and pinched its ears. The kitten, being pinched, affectionately rubbed against her hand. Anyone could see the deep bond between this owner and pet, so Xu Luo got her answer: this was indeed Zhou Miao’s cat.
“What’s wrong with it?” Xu Luo saw the IV catheter on the cat’s leg.
Zhou Miao said, “Stomach issues. It’s here for two days of fluids.”
Xu Luo thought of her own Xiao Huang. That guy’s digestion had always been great; even with a broken leg, it didn’t stop him from gaining weight.
Comparing the two cats, she felt a sense of pride as a cat owner.
Zhou Miao didn’t understand what she was proud of and didn’t care. She looked around and asked, “Song Yunran didn’t follow you?”
Xu Luo asked curiously, “Why would she follow me?”
To be fair, ever since Xiao Huang broke its leg, her relationship with Song Yunran had improved by leaps and bounds, but that didn’t mean Song Yunran had become a charm on her belt to be carried everywhere.
“It’s better if she isn’t here.” Zhou Miao curled her lip. “Do you know? She’s a lunatic.”
Xu Luo reached out to tickle the tail of the cat in Zhou Miao’s arms and said, “I know.”
Zhou Miao: “…”
“Isn’t your reaction a bit too calm?” Zhou Miao felt something was wrong. “I’m talking about your marriage partner, the person you spend day and night with, the person sharing your bed—she’s a lunatic, and this is your reaction?”
Xu Luo acted like an old sage. “I’m just that mature. I stay calm in the face of trouble. Young person, you should learn from me.”
Zhou Miao: “…”
“I don’t get a good vibe from you.” Zhou Miao stepped two paces away. “Honestly, have you been assimilated by Song Yunran? Are you two wives of one mind, becoming weirdos together?”
Xu Luo suddenly raised both hands, curled them into claws, and made a menacing gesture. “Not only have I become a weirdo, I’ve also awakened a taste for drinking human blood. Are you scared?”
Zhou Miao: “…”
She burst out laughing. “Now I believe you’re normal.”
She put the cat back in the isolation cage. “The one in your house came to see me not long ago.”
“Saw you?”
Zhou Miao said, “She was investigating me behind the scenes, making trouble behind my back to warn me.”
Because of Song Yunran, she had lost contact with Xiao Shu.
In fact, after talking with Song Yunran, Zhou Miao had specifically investigated Xiao Shu. She learned that the child hadn’t been doing well after being adopted by relatives. The relatives had usurped his family property, used his parents’ inheritance to buy an apartment in a high-end complex, and treated him like a servant. The child had lived like that for three years without a word, his heart full of resentment. After being provoked by Song Yunran, his longing for his parents reached a peak, leading him to say those impulsive words.
Later, Xiao Shu apologized to her. Zhou Miao accepted it, but even so, the hurt she felt in that moment was real; it wouldn’t disappear just because an apology was given afterward. All Zhou Miao did was introduce the child to a reliable lawyer, and then… it ended there.
Ultimately, she had been swayed by Song Yunran and couldn’t help but question whether it was no longer appropriate for her and that child to stay in contact.
Thinking of this, Zhou Miao really couldn’t help herself. “Xu Luo, the one in your house is quite sick in the head, isn’t she?”
Xu Luo recalled the original novel and nodded in agreement. “It seems that way.”
Zhou Miao: “…”
“Pfft!” She laughed. “You aren’t just ordinarily calm.”
Xu Luo spoke like an old professor: “This is a manifestation of maturity.”
Zhou Miao’s eyelid flickered.
“Do you have anything to do next? ‘Mature Xu,’ do you want to go see a movie with me?” Zhou Miao asked.
Mature Xu asked, “With you?”
Before the movie even started, she couldn’t help but let out a yawn.
The veins on Zhou Miao’s forehead throbbed. “What’s wrong with being with me?”
Xu Luo said bluntly, “Too boring.”
Zhou Miao was annoyed. “Fine, if you don’t want to watch, don’t watch.”
After saying that, she reached out as fast as lightning, hooked her arm around Xu Luo’s neck, raised her phone, and snapped ten photos in rapid succession.
“What are you doing?” Xu Luo pushed her.
Zhou Miao took the opportunity to pull back her hand. she beautified the photos, set the atmosphere, used level-ten retouching skills, and then sent the photos to one person in her contact list.
She put her phone away, feeling cheerful. “Nothing much, just sending Song Yunran a testimony of our beautiful friendship.”
Did Song Yunran really think she was afraid of her?
Heh.
Whatever Song Yunran didn’t want her to do, she was going to do exactly that!
At the Song Group headquarters, Song Yunran had just finished a meeting. Her secretary was pushing her out of the conference room when ding her phone rang.
She picked up the phone and clicked on the message.
What a beautiful day. Attached: Image.
