“Then I’m leaving?” Zhou Miao turned around, making a move to go.
Xu Luo stepped aside, giving her a completely unobstructed path.
Zhou Miao: “…”
Was she really planning to let her leave?
“It’s okay,” Song Yunran interjected softly to break the tension. “We’re all friends; there’s no need to care about such small things.”
Compared to Xu Luo’s coldness, Song Yunran’s intervention seemed like an angel’s grace, as if she were surrounded by a thousand rays of light. Zhou Miao was almost moved by her.
Almost, but not quite, because Song Yunran immediately followed up with: “Just bring a double portion next time.”
Zhou Miao: “…”
Her face went blank and her mouth twitched. “Has your Song family encountered a major financial crisis? What’s with the constant fleecing?”
Could it be that Song Yunran hadn’t invited her here for revenge, but rather to use her to alleviate a financial crisis?
She curled her lip. “Fine, tomorrow I’ll send a truckload of gifts over, just consider it my act of universal salvation.”
Xu Luo didn’t want a truckload of gifts from a certain Zhou person; she simply wanted to kick her out. Unfortunately, Zhou Miao seemed to have zero self-esteem; even after being spoken to like that, she had no intention of flinging her sleeves and leaving.
She looked at Zhou Miao, then at Song Yunran, and sighed silently.
Forget it, she had done her best; it was Zhou Miao herself who was being stubborn and refusing to take the chance to leave!
She went to fetch her watermelon from the fridge and carried it over to the pool, no longer bothering with whether Zhou Miao lived or died.
Dusk is the most beautiful part of a summer day. If you pair it with a swimming pool and watermelon, it’s even more incredible. Xu Luo didn’t even change into a swimsuit; seeing the shimmering pool, her natural longing for water made her unable to restrain herself as she plunged into the pool with the watermelon. Splash!
Holding the giant watermelon in both hands and paddling only with her two long legs, she being an excellent swimmer—lost herself in swimming back and forth for a while. Only then did she swim to the edge, lifting her upper body to place the watermelon on the deck.
As a result, as soon as she lifted herself up, she noticed two sets of eyes staring straight at her from the shore—one from Zhou Miao and one from Song Yunran as if… as if she were a well-trained animal performer in an aquarium.
The spectator, Zhou Miao, clapped her hands for her, expressing high praise for her performance.
Xu Luo: “…”
“Luo Luo really likes playing with water,” Song Yunran remarked. “If I had known, I would have had the pool cleaned out sooner.”
Zhou Miao chimed in: “I like playing with water too!”
As she spoke, she unhesitatingly pulled off her “Moé girl” T-shirt and kicked off her shorts, revealing the swimsuit underneath. Her great figure was fully exposed.
Song Yunran glanced at her and then looked away, not giving that great figure a single ounce of attention. Instead, she focused on Xu Luo’s current state. Xu Luo was dressed in ordinary casual clothes; summer clothes are very thin, and once soaked with water…
Song Yunran’s gaze darkened by two shades.
Xu Luo didn’t notice the change in Song Yunran’s expression. She leaned half her body against the pool’s edge, cracked the watermelon open with a single punch, and took a huge, satisfying bite.
She remained in that position, leaning against the edge and going to town on the fruit.
Zhou Miao caught sight of this by chance and clicked her tongue. “Xu Luo, are you an uncivilized barbarian?”
Xu Luo ignored her; being happy was what mattered.
Song Yunran watched Xu Luo for a while before driving her wheelchair back into the villa, though it was unclear what she went to do.
Zhou Miao watched Song Yunran leave with flickering eyes, then turned and dove into the pool.
Song Yunran returned not long after. She came up to Xu Luo, who was still busy eating the watermelon, and called her name: “Look up, Luo Luo.”
Xu Luo looked up, and in the next second, a soft towel wiped the corner of her mouth. Song Yunran had leaned over to wipe her face.
Song Yunran smiled at her and said, “Luo Luo is like a little kitten.”
After saying that, she handed a spoon to Xu Luo, saying, “Use a spoon to eat.”
Xu Luo froze for a moment before taking it. “…Uh, thanks.”
Song Yunran smiled, looking very gentle.
She moved away from the poolside again to sit a bit further off, reading the book she had been looking at earlier. The evening sunset framed her figure in a peaceful and soft light.
Xu Luo: “…”
She slowed down her eating as she watched Song Yunran.
On the other side, Zhou Miao swam several laps in a variety of styles, only to find that she didn’t exist in Song Yunran’s eyes at all. The other woman barely even looked at her. This was different from what she had expected completely different!
Hadn’t Song Yunran called her to the villa just to mess with her? What did it mean to ignore her like this?
Zhou Miao blew a bubble in the water, her eyes sizing up Song Yunran.
Her staring finally drew Song Yunran’s gaze. The latter looked at her and smiled, asking, “Is something the matter?”
Zhou Miao: “…”
She wanted to ask her what was wrong!
She narrowed her eyes, thought of something, and slapped the water. She swam like a fish behind Xu Luo, who was still leaning by the edge eating, and hooked her arms around Xu Luo’s waist from behind.
Feeling a “seatbelt” suddenly wrap around her waist while she was eating, Xu Luo’s anger began to rise. She turned her head: “Zhou Miao, what is wrong with you?”
Zhou Miao grinned, patted her stomach, and said, “Friend, I’m just concerned about whether you’ve eaten your fill.”
She felt a solid handful and said with mock seriousness, “Looks like you’re full; your belly is about to pop.”
Xu Luo: “…”
She turned around and gave her a kick.
Zhou Miao took the opportunity to let go and swim away.
She swam a few meters out and looked up at the shore.
She was deliberately getting close to Xu Luo to provoke Song Yunran into an outburst.
But Song Yunran didn’t seem provoked at all. Clad in the sunset, a faint, gentle smile lingered on the corners of her mouth.
Zhou Miao: “…”
She was starting to feel a bit bored.
She got out of the water, walked straight to Song Yunran, and said, “Song Yunran, can you just be straightforward?”
“Hmm?” Song Yunran looked at her, puzzled. “What do you mean?”
What else could she mean?!
Zhou Miao glared at her.
“Pfft—” Song Yunran covered her face and laughed. “Does Miss Zhou have some misunderstanding about me?”
She said, “I invited Miss Zhou to play with water simply because I misunderstood you before and wanted to use this way to apologize. Luo Luo told me that the relationship between you two is just an ordinary one. Earlier, because of my misunderstanding, I did some rude things to you, Miss Zhou. I am truly sorry for that.”
Zhou Miao: “Ah?”
Xu Luo heard her name and looked over at the two of them. When she heard these words, a look of surprise appeared in her eyes.
Song Yunran didn’t have bad intentions in inviting Zhou Miao? She just wanted to apologize?
Song Yunran believed that nothing was going on between her and Zhou Miao?
Xu Luo fell into thought.
Zhou Miao… Zhou Miao didn’t believe it. She didn’t believe a word Song Yunran said, but Song Yunran indeed hadn’t done anything to her today, and she truly didn’t seem to care about her.
Song Yunran saw through Zhou Miao’s disbelief but didn’t defend herself too much. She simply said, “If Miss Zhou likes it here, you are welcome to come often. Luo Luo and I will welcome you anytime.”
Zhou Miao suspected her and raised an eyebrow. “I can really come often?”
Song Yunran smiled and said, “You can.”
Xu Luo: “…”
Zhou Miao didn’t trust Song Yunran. To prove that Song Yunran was talking nonsense, she actually showed up at the villa every day. A few days passed, and Song Yunran really didn’t do anything. She didn’t even show her face often, being neither distant nor warm toward Zhou Miao.
After a few days like this, she was almost well-acquainted with Granny Fu in the villa.
On this day, Zhou Miao had grown tired of the water. Although she was still wearing a swimsuit, she didn’t get into the pool. Instead, she set up a parasol by the side, lying on a lounge chair and drinking fresh fruit juice while wearing sunglasses.
There was another parasol next to her, which was originally Xu Luo’s spot, but Xu Luo had gone to the restroom a minute ago.
At this moment, Zhou Miao was staring blankly at the ripples in the pool, planning in her mind not to come to the villa anymore starting tomorrow, because Song Yunran clearly didn’t intend to do anything to her. Running back and forth like this made her look silly.
While she was zoning out, she heard a sound. Looking up, she saw Song Yunran coming over, tidying up the clothes Xu Luo had left by the poolside.
During these few days, Zhou Miao didn’t see Song Yunran often. Every time she did, the woman was cleaning up Xu Luo’s messes either wiping Xu Luo’s face and hands or bringing this or that to the forgetful Xu Luo. This occasionally made Zhou Miao feel that the two were not partners, but rather… a simple mother-daughter relationship.
Song Yunran was tidying Xu Luo’s clothes. Sitting in a wheelchair made these things very inconvenient. Her effort to lean down looked as if at any second she would…
Splash—
A spray of water erupted from the pool as the beauty in the wheelchair accidentally fell in.
Zhou Miao: “…”
She bolted upright.
She looked at the pool. The fallen beauty didn’t even struggle; she sank straight to the bottom.
And she didn’t float up for a long time.
With a heavy click of her tongue, Zhou Miao threw off her sunglasses, jumped into the water, and located the submerged Song Yunran in a few heartbeats. Through the clear pool water, she saw Song Yunran, and then her eyelid gave a natural, ominous twitch.
Because she saw clearly she saw that Song Yunran, lying at the bottom of the pool, was in a state of utter calm, her head turned to the side, eyes open, staring at her wordlessly.
Zhou Miao had a premonition of disaster and turned to leave.
But she didn’t make it in time.
A slender, delicate arm reached out and grabbed her arm with such strength that she was firmly trapped at the bottom.
Zhou Miao’s eyes widened slightly. Because of the shock, her breathing was disrupted, she choked on a mouthful of water, and exhaled a string of bubbles.
She saw Song Yunran at the bottom of the pool curve her brows and eyes in a smile, yet her gaze was as icy as the water.
Zhou Miao began to struggle.
Splash—
Another sound of entering the water rang out. Zhou Miao froze for an instant and saw a figure out of the corner of her eye quickly swim past her, scooping up Song Yunran. In the next second, the rescued and the rescuer both broke through the surface.
Only then did Zhou Miao realize that Song Yunran had let go of her at some point.
She felt a tightness in her lungs and treaded water to surface.
Oxygen rushed into her chest. While panting, Zhou Miao looked at the rescued Song Yunran and Xu Luo, who had returned from the restroom to save her. The former’s gaze flickered over her as if she were a mere puff of air.
But Zhou Miao knew she wasn’t air, because Song Yunran wouldn’t project killing intent toward a puff of air.
Song Yunran really was a lunatic.
Zhou Miao confirmed this once again.
“Song Yunran, Zhou Miao, what were you two doing under the water? Dancing a duet?” Xu Luo asked strangely as she carried Song Yunran back to the shore.
Song Yunran clung to Xu Luo, resting her head weakly on Xu Luo’s shoulder. “I accidentally fell in. Zhou Miao wanted to save me.”
As she spoke, she lifted her head slightly, looked back, and hooked the corner of her mouth at Zhou Miao. “Miss Zhou is indeed warm-hearted.”
