- Chapter 22 - Stingy Little Dragon, Can’t I Even Give You a Kiss?
Cang Lan still felt a bit guilty because of what happened last night. She thought Yu Xuanji would be angry with her, but she didn’t expect her to wake up so early to cook for her. For a moment, she actually felt quite embarrassed.
Yu Xuanji removed the outer layer of cabbage leaves, sliced them up, and stir-fried them in the pot. Huang Liu sat on a small stool in front of the stove, feeding firewood into the fire one stick at a time.
Cang Lan quietly circled behind Huang Liu. As soon as she turned her head, she met the weasel’s charred face; even the whiskers near its mouth had been singed bald. Unaware of his appearance, the weasel gave Cang Lan a toothy grin: “Good morning, Great King.”
With a look of disgust, Cang Lan tossed him out and took over Huang Liu’s small stool, sitting obediently in front of the stove to tend the fire.
Yu Xuanji looked at her with a beaming smile and gently reminded her, “A-Lan, be careful not to burn your clothes.”
Cang Lan tossed the wood in one by one. Fearing the fire wasn’t big enough, she shoved the wood in forcefully and even considered adding some karmic flames into the mix.
Yu Xuanji pulled a charred pancake out of the pot and said helplessly, “A-Lan, get up for a moment and let Huang Liu come back to tend the fire.”
Cang Lan immediately became displeased. “Why? Is my fire not big enough?”
Yu Xuanji smiled and said helplessly, “It is indeed very large. However, the pancakes in the pot are almost burnt to charcoal. You’ll be the one eating this piece later.”
Upon hearing this, Cang Lan immediately stood up and looked into the pot. The pancake was indeed burnt black, emitting bursts of a pungent, scorched smell that made her frown. Cang Lan said guiltily, “Wife, I know I was wrong.”
The fire beneath the pot indeed grew much smaller. Yu Xuanji curled her lips into a smile and placed a newly shaped pancake inside.
As she flipped the pancakes, Yu Xuanji said, “Why was your reaction so strong yesterday? Is it really not okay for me to give you a kiss?”
Cang Lan said shyly, “It’s not that I won’t let you kiss me, it’s just… it’s just that when you kiss me, you have to tell me beforehand. Otherwise, I won’t let you.”
Yu Xuanji was surprised, but she went along with Cang Lan’s words: “Alright then. Next time before I kiss you, I’ll say, ‘I’m going to kiss you now.’ How does that sound?”
Cang Lan nodded. “That would be very good.”
Yu Xuanji sighed and shook her head helplessly.
After finishing the last pancake, she smiled at Cang Lan and negotiated with this stingy dragon king: “A-Lan, after we finish eating, let’s go to the fields to pick some cabbage and radishes. Come with me to give them to that group of little rabbit demons.”
Cang Lan looked up, her face smeared with soot like a little tabby cat. She said reluctantly, “We worked so hard to grow those vegetables, why should we give them away?”
Yu Xuanji was not surprised to hear this. She walked up to Cang Lan, took out a handkerchief, and carefully wiped the black soot off her face. She smiled and said, “I borrowed some carrots from them a few days ago. One should return what one borrows; it makes borrowing again much easier.”
Cang Lan didn’t think so. As soon as she thought about how that group of little rabbit demons also had furry bodies, she suddenly understood something. Cang Lan said gloomily, “Hmph, Wife must like those stinking rabbits. What’s so great about having fur? They even have two ugly red eyes. There’s nothing good to look at.”
Yu Xuanji couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s not like that.”
Cang Lan thought to herself, I don’t believe your lies, you’re definitely doing this for those rabbits.
When Cang Lan spoke, her tone carried a sour hint of jealousy, but she didn’t dare let Yu Xuanji hear it. She could only mutter softly, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking. Last time when you touched the Iron-Eating Beast, your eyes were glued to it. You clearly prefer things with fur.”
The more she thought about it, the more unpleasant it felt. Cang Lan pouted and remained silent, secretly planning to catch all those rabbits and roast them.
Seeing that Yu Xuanji was still smiling, Cang Lan asked relentlessly, “Wife, you tell me—is their fur more comfortable to touch, or are my scales more comfortable?”
Without a second thought, Yu Xuanji said, “Of course your scales are more comfortable to touch.”
Cang Lan pressed her hand to her forehead, trying hard to suppress the upward curve of her lips. She tossed a piece of wood into the stove and acted calm: “That’s more like it. You can go if you want, but you aren’t allowed to touch them. They are a bunch of wild rabbits and are very dirty; they probably don’t even bathe for months at a time.”
Yu Xuanji laughed, “Alright, I won’t touch them.”
Cang Lan pressed further, “Swear it.”
Yu Xuanji held up three fingers: “I swear, I absolutely will not touch them.”
The Iron-Eating Beast walked in carrying a bundle of freshly chopped wood. Just as it was about to put the firewood in the kitchen, it was grabbed by the scruff of the neck by the Gray Wolf Demon before it could even enter the door.
The Iron-Eating Beast said, “Old Wolf, why are you pulling us out? Let’s go in and help the King and Madam with the work! Maybe we can even sneak a little bite while we’re at it.”
After saying that, the Iron-Eating Beast smacked its lips and gave a silly laugh. “The pancakes Madam makes are so fragrant; I can smell them from far away. The King is truly lucky.”
The Gray Wolf Demon said in frustration, “You idiot! How dare you loiter in front of the King and Madam at a time like this? Watch your skin!”
Huang Six quickly nodded in agreement and whispered, “I even heard the King saying something a few days ago about skinning you to make a pillow.”
The Iron-Eating Beast trembled with fear, squatting on the ground and holding its head. It said in disbelief, “No… surely not…”
Huang Six continued to intimidate him, “It’s true, it’s true! Madam said your fur feels comfortable to touch. The King dotes on Madam so much—if Madam says she wants your skin, you’re finished!”
The Iron-Eating Beast covered its face and was on the verge of tears. “The King’s kindness to me is as heavy as a mountain. My life belongs to the King. If she truly wants my skin, I will personally offer it to her.”
Just as those words were spoken, Cang Lan, holding a freshly cooked pancake, blew on it to cool it down, took a bite, and said, “What are you talking about behind my back?”
The three great demons stood up straight and said in unison, “No… nothing…”
With a cold face, Cang Lan pulled out a small box from behind her. Inside were freshly made, sizzling, and fragrant pancakes. “Here, take these and eat. The further away you go, the better. Don’t come back in until Madam and I have finished eating.”
The Iron-Eating Beast said tremulously, “Great… Great King, aren’t you going to skin me?”
Cang Lan frowned. “Why on earth would I skin you for no reason?”
The Iron-Eating Beast looked at the snickering weasel and wolf. It stammered, “But Huang Six said…”
Huang Six quickly covered its mouth and said with a grin, “Nothing was said! Great King, we shall take our leave now.”
Watching her three subordinates finally being shooed away, Cang Lan finished the palm-sized pancake in one bite and ran joyfully back toward the kitchen.
Yu Xuanji came out carrying the pancakes. Cang Lan happily took them from her, picked up Yu Xuanji—who hadn’t even taken off her apron—and spun her around several times before placing her on the table.
Yu Xuanji had noticed that Cang Lan particularly liked picking her up and placing her on the table. She did this every time before a meal, and Yu Xuanji had long since grown used to it.
After eating, Cang Lan went to the vegetable patch, pulled up a cabbage and a radish, and put them in a basket. As she turned around, she met Yu Xuanji’s curved eyes. Yu Xuanji said, “A-Lan.”
With a reluctant face, Cang Lan pulled out her Universe Bag, filled it to the brim with cabbages and radishes, and carried it on her shoulder, shrinking it down to hold in her hand. She wrapped her arm around Yu Xuanji’s waist and transformed into a gust of black wind. In the blink of an eye, they arrived at the little rabbit demons’ village on the western mountain.
Originally, Cang Lan had wanted to just open the Universe Bag and dump all the radishes and cabbages out, but Yu Xuanji said she was afraid they would break if they hit the ground and insisted on delivering them personally.
On the village lookout tower, a little rabbit was bobbing its head. When it saw the woman in white not far away, it grabbed a megaphone and shouted in surprise, notifying the entire village to come out and welcome her: “The Fairy Sister is here!”
When that shout rang out, both Cang Lan and Yu Xuanji noticed the ground beneath their feet trembling slightly. A massive cloud of dust surged from the distance. Cang Lan held Yu Xuanji tightly in her arms: “Wife, do not be afraid.”
The dust cloud drew closer. Cang Lan looked closely and saw it was actually that group of fat and plump rabbits. They raised their upper bodies, staring at the beaming Yu Xuanji, and then scrambled to pounce forward.
Cang Lan, a dignified Dragon King, was nearly kicked away by the rabbits. She clutched her chest and retreated a few steps, and in the blink of an eye, she was squeezed to the very back.
The little rabbit demons, who had transformed into their original forms, clung to Yu Xuanji’s legs. Some even bit her sleeves and climbed up her body, just to get a few more pets from the woman’s hands.
Cang Lan saw that Yu Xuanji’s body was almost submerged by those stinking rabbits, yet her face was still filled with a joyful smile. Standing aside, Cang Lan was both anxious and angry. She stomped her feet hard and gritted her teeth, saying, “I knew it!”
