- Chapter 21 - Kissing the Scales – "Come up and sleep, I won't eat you."
Two soft lips slowly took Yu Xuanji’s earlobe into their mouth, and the tip of a tongue involuntarily brushed against that piece of ice-cold, soft flesh.
Yu Xuanji’s earlobe had originally been cold, but being gently taken in like this, it became soft and scorching hot, as if it were about to melt inside Cang Lan’s mouth.
Before she could even react, Cang Lan had already turned and fled in panic.
Yu Xuanji stared blankly at Cang Lan’s fleeing back. Like a machine, she raised her arm and touched her wet, burning earlobe, silently curling the corners of her lips into a smile.
Having fled the bedroom in a panic, Cang Lan arrived at the edge of the Dragon Pond and leapt in. As water splashed in all directions, a divine dragon, entirely black like thick ink, swam restlessly within the freezing pond water.
Yu Xuanji emerged from the bedroom and, without needing to think twice, walked straight toward the Dragon Pond. She stood by the edge; even just getting slightly close, the pond water emitted waves of bone-piercing chill.
Yu Xuanji called out toward the water, “A-Lan, are you in there?”
No one answered.
From Yu Xuanji’s perspective, a faint golden light shimmered indistinctly within the deep pool. If she guessed correctly, the object emitting the golden light should be the dark iron long spear that Cang Lan coiled around while sleeping.
A massive black dragon lay crouched at the bottom of the deep pool. She stared fixedly with her two golden vertical pupils at the reflection of the figure on the water’s surface above.
Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle. A string of bubbles escaped the dragon’s mouth. Cang Lan closed her eyes and rubbed agitatedly against the dark iron pillar for a long while. She slowly flared her scales, allowing the bone-chilling pond water to soak her numb and feverish body.
I want… I really want Yu Xuanji to pet me.
Cang Lan lay in wait at the bottom of the water, staring intently at Yu Xuanji’s reflection, thinking to herself that if Yu Xuanji came over to call her back to bed, she would immediately emerge from the water.
But if Yu Xuanji didn’t call her, then she would…
An anxious female voice pierced through the layers of waves and reached Cang Lan’s ears. She snapped her eyes open and, in the blink of an eye, soared out of the water, standing before Yu Xuanji in her black dragon form.
A low dragon cry escaped Cang Lan’s mouth. She blinked, aligning her golden vertical pupils with Yu Xuanji’s eyes, and exhaled a warm breath toward her.
This was the first time Yu Xuanji had looked directly at Cang Lan’s true form so closely. She stared dazed at the gargantuan creature before her, standing frozen in place without a word.
Seeing Yu Xuanji’s dazed state, Cang Lan thought her dragon form had frightened her senseless and hurriedly prepared to transform into her human shape. But in the next second, a hand gently touched her cheek, fingers stroking the dense layer of soft, fine scales for a moment.
Yu Xuanji sighed, “The water is cold. Come up and sleep with me. I won’t eat you.”
Merely being touched so gently by a single hand made almost every scale on Cang Lan’s body stand on end. It felt so good that the depths beneath her scales felt itchy and numb; it was as if her entire being was under the control of Yu Xuanji’s hand.
The black dragon swung her tail twice. The pitch-black, lustrous mane on the dragon’s spine trembled slightly, and a series of low growls vibrated in her throat.
Yu Xuanji spoke again, “We have been married for so long; it isn’t as if you committed some heinous crime just by kissing me once.”
Cang Lan shook her head, her mind spinning and her body feeling light from the stroking of that hand. She didn’t even know where to put her dragon claws. She had thought Yu Xuanji would be afraid of her true form, but to her surprise, Yu Xuanji not only wasn’t afraid but even used her hand to caress her scales.
It feels so good, so good.
The black dragon wanted to use her claws to scoop up this little human—who wasn’t even as big as half of one of her dragon toes—into her hands, carry her down into the cold pond, and wrap her tightly and seamlessly with her thick, powerful dragon tail.
But the pond water was too cold, and the little human’s skin was delicate and soft, unable to withstand the invasion of the icy water. She couldn’t bear to do it.
Yu Xuanji struggled to cradle the black dragon’s cheeks with both hands, her fingertips stroking the regular and beautiful arrangement of fine scales. The dragon’s head was simply too large; even with her arms fully extended, Yu Xuanji’s hands couldn’t reach Cang Lan’s neck.
Cang Lan saw that Yu Xuanji liked petting her, but her body seemed a bit too large, making it uncomfortable for the little human to reach. Quickly, she shrank her size a bit. The entire dragon leapt out of the water, her powerful tail slapping the surface twice, wishing she could leap entirely into Yu Xuanji’s embrace.
Yu Xuanji’s palm slowly brushed over the scales. Watching Cang Lan wagging her head and tail, she used a rounded fingertip to gently flick one of the scales.
A low, hurried dragon roar echoed through the cave, causing ripples to spread across the surface of the cold pond. The dragon tail slammed violently against the water, sending icy splashes flying everywhere, drenching Yu Xuanji completely and leaving her in a wretched state.
Cang Lan hurriedly cried out, “Wife! Don’t!” She herself didn’t know what was happening; the moment the scale was flicked open, the entire dragon felt as if she had been struck by electricity from the inside out, nearly causing her to catapult into the air.
Yu Xuanji was soaked to the bone by the cold water. She wrapped her arms around her chest, her face instantly turning incredibly pale. In the blink of an eye, Cang Lan transformed into her human form and pulled Yu Xuanji tightly into her arms, circulating her spiritual power to help dispel the chill from her body.
Holding Yu Xuanji by the waist with her lips pressed against her ear, Cang Lan said in a small voice, like a child who had done something wrong, “Wife, I’m sorry. I couldn’t control myself just now and got you wet. It’s all my fault.”
Under the nourishment of Cang Lan’s continuous and surging spiritual power, the color gradually returned to Yu Xuanji’s cheeks and lips. She leaned against Cang Lan’s shoulder, turned her head to stare at Cang Lan’s long, fair neck, and planted a soft kiss upon it.
The person holding her instantly stopped all movement. Yu Xuanji felt very clearly as Cang Lan’s body gradually became stiff. Before she could open her mouth to speak, that patch of snowy-white skin on the neck was instantly covered with tiny, shiny black scales.
As if possessed, Yu Xuanji kissed it again. It felt cool to the touch, with a smooth sensation like mutton-fat jade.
Though her body had warmed up, the dragon in her arms escaped her embrace in a flash and dove headfirst into the cold pond.
Yu Xuanji stood on the shore looking into the water. She called Cang Lan’s name softly, but no matter how she called, the little dragon refused to come out.
Cang Lan thus slept submerged in the depths of the cold pond for the entire night. When daylight arrived, she was drawn awake by waves of a rich fragrance piercing through the water’s surface.
Cang Lan leapt out of the water and followed the scent on tiptoe to the kitchen. She leaned against the kitchen door, poking half her head out, watching Yu Xuanji, who was wearing an apron and cooking soup.
A fresh, green head of Chinese cabbage sat on the cutting board. Cang Lan rubbed her eyes and used a vision-piercing technique to look toward the east. To the east was the vegetable plot; rows of green Chinese cabbage grew upon the soil, and even radishes were popping out of the ground.
Cang Lan blinked, her gaze falling back onto Yu Xuanji’s back. She sniffed the air, taking several deep breaths of the fragrance, staring longingly at the milky-white fish soup bubbling in the pot, her mouth watering with greed.
Cang Lan swallowed her saliva, calculating the mistakes she had made the previous night in her heart. Last night, she didn’t let Yu Xuanji hold her, didn’t let Yu Xuanji kiss her, and didn’t go to bed to sleep with her. Surely Yu Xuanji was angry with her and was purposely not making her food.
At this thought, Cang Lan sighed silently, hanging her head and preparing to slink away despondently to find something outside to fill her stomach.
Before she could even turn around, Yu Xuanji spoke without even looking back, as if she had eyes in the back of her head, “Where are you going? Wash your hands. Dinner is about to be served.”
