- Chapter 12 - A Desperate Desire to Possess
The two days of the weekend passed quickly.
Xu Fei hadn’t experienced such a fulfilling holiday in a long time, if she wasn’t working, she was doing homework.
On Monday morning, she was jolted awake by a sudden chill.
The sound of dripping water reached her ears. Xu Fei snapped awake instantly and scrambled up, only to find that more than half of her quilt was soaked. A corner of the ceiling was damp, and water droplets were pitter-pattering down.
Mei Qia arrived quickly. A few minutes later, she hung up the phone. “The upstairs is leaking. I’ve already called for repairs. It’ll take a week to redo the waterproofing.”
She glanced around the cramped utility room. “Feifei, you can’t sleep here anymore. Move to my room for now, and we’ll see once it’s fixed.”
After arranging the move, Mei Qia turned around to see Xu Fei nervously rummaging through her schoolbag, clutching a notebook and checking it repeatedly.
Mei Qia’s face went blank with exasperation.
Definitely a crush. A fatal case of adolescent girlhood.
At school, Li Qin announced a piece of news to the class. The date for the first monthly exam was set, late September, right before the National Day holiday.
As soon as the words left her mouth, the classroom erupted in wails and howls.
“Didn’t school just start? Why is there another exam already?” “Don’t tell me the results are coming out during National Day.” “I don’t want to take it.”
Listening to them, Xu Fei also tightened her grip on her pen, feeling a surge of anxiety.
In the past, she wouldn’t have felt this way, it didn’t make much difference to her whether she did well or poorly. But this time, she wanted to do well, especially in Physics.
She instinctively looked up, and Zhu Nianxi’s profile bumped into her field of vision.
Amidst the clamor, the Omega sat alone. The outdoor light filtered through the glass, outlining her face in a faint golden halo. Her expression was neutral, yet it inexplicably made one’s heart race.
Zhu Nianxi was the kind of person who stood out individually but was even more striking in a crowd. The students of Class 7 whispered privately that this was the “God of Study” aura.
“Gods of Study” were all like this: effortlessly taking the top rank in the grade, detached from the world, never lingering for anything.
Nervousness? It didn’t exist for her.
Xu Fei lowered her eyes, her gaze fixed on the small note in her palm.
Zhu Nianxi had just handed it to her, tucked inside a Chinese dictation book.
One sentence: Tutoring sessions doubled. No “buts.”
Xu Fei: Crying.
The Omega’s heat cycle had passed, but they were still tutoring in the dormitory. It was quiet and convenient.
Xu Fei was working on a Physics mini-test.
Zhu Nianxi had drafted the paper herself, it was filled with classic problem types they had discussed before. Some questions were tricky, and Xu Fei couldn’t solve them immediately. As she circled and marked the keywords with her pen, her thoughts were lured away by a rich scent of roses.
Recently, these “hallucinations” had been occurring more and more frequently.
Before, she could only smell it when they were in close contact. Yesterday, however, Xu Fei had smelled the white rose fragrance even during class. It wafted clearly from Zhu Nianxi, drilling straight into her nose.
Now, Xu Fei could feel the entire room filled with the Omega’s scent, elegant and noble.
But it wasn’t overpowering. It was like a body fragrance lingering on a quilt or intimate clothing, faint, carrying the owner’s softness and body heat. It was a “now you smell it, now you don’t” sensation that provoked a desperate urge to bury one’s head in it and sniff to one’s heart’s content.
Her flat gland also felt a faint, latent heat.
Snap!
A pen struck Xu Fei’s forehead sharply.
“Ow!”
In pain, Xu Fei covered her forehead. The moment her eyes met Zhu Nianxi’s, her heart skipped a beat.
Zhu Nianxi leaned one hand on the table, looking down at her from above. Most of her face was cast in shadow. She opened her mouth and coldly spat out a few words. “What are you thinking about? Do the problems.”
Xu Fei was too guilty to speak and buried her head back into the test.
Zhu Nianxi remained standing by the desk, looking down and twirling the pen she had just used to hit Xu Fei. Her jacket was unbuttoned. In Xu Fei’s peripheral vision was the Omega’s waist, made slender by the pleated skirt, her flat abdomen, and her perfectly hanging ribbon tie.
The floral scent in the air grew stronger.
Xu Fei finished the paper entirely under the influence of the fragrance.
As Zhu Nianxi graded it with a red pen, Xu Fei watched apprehensively. She watched the Omega’s prominent knuckles and her expression after finishing each question.
Fortunately, the result was good. Zhu Nianxi let out a smile.
Spring had bloomed.
Meeting those round, tea-colored eyes, Zhu Nianxi was nearly scorched by the anticipation held within them. She paused, her lips curling into an even gentler smile.
“Feifei, you did very well.”
Xu Fei felt like she had come back to life.
With the test over, the two studied together. Zhu Nianxi did her homework while Xu Fei corrected her mistakes.
As she wrote, Xu Fei felt that scorching gaze falling on her again.
Without even looking up, Zhu Nianxi tapped Xu Fei with her pen and said, “Whatever you want to say, say it.”
Xu Fei hesitated internally for a long time. Finally, she asked, though she was stammering and her face was too red to look at. “Nianxi, do you use perfume?”
Zhu Nianxi looked over, puzzled. “What?”
Xu Fei wanted to die right then and there.
How was this any different from saying “You smell so good”?
But it really was fragrant. And she wasn’t supposed to be able to smell pheromones.
Xu Fei changed her phrasing: “Maybe it’s your body wash or shampoo?”
Zhu Nianxi’s expression shifted slightly. She said in a declarative tone, “You smelled something.”
“Yes,” Xu Fei said honestly, then began to describe it. “It’s a white rose fragrance. Very special. There’s a cold scent mixed in with the floral notes.”
Her voice grew smaller and smaller. “It’s very high-end, smells really good…”
That is my pheromone.
Zhu Nianxi fell silent for a few seconds, her gaze sweeping over Xu Fei’s face.
Can a Beta smell pheromones?
Yet today, she didn’t smell the scent of oak.
Seeing that Xu Fei was about to die of shame and indignation, Zhu Nianxi curled her lips. “It’s body wash.”
Xu Fei immediately asked. “Which brand? Is it expensive?”
After all, it was what Zhu Nianxi used.
“It doesn’t cost money,” Zhu Nianxi propped her face up with one hand. “If you do well on the monthly exam, I’ll give you some.”
“Really?”
Zhu Nianxi nodded: “Really.”
Xu Fei was very excited.
Though even she didn’t know why she was so excited about getting the same body wash as her classmate.
Over the next few days, Xu Fei doubled her efforts in studying.
Driven by her progress in Physics, her attitude toward other subjects changed as well. She no longer just “got by” she took the initiative to delve deeper and study her mistakes.
When she got tired of Physics, she took her Chinese textbook outside to memorize ancient poetry. Suddenly, she heard a “clatter and bang” of a collision coming from the bar lobby.
Opening the door, clear shouts reached her ears.
“Who brought an inhibitor?!” “Don’t go near him!” “Where are the Betas? Are there any Betas here?!”
An Alpha had released pheromones indiscriminately after drinking, inducing a “pseudo heat” in several Omegas. The Omegas’ pheromones, in turn, caused other Alphas to lose control.
The place was a mess. Alphas and Omegas were being evacuated, and the Betas on duty were working hard to control the situation.
“Where are the Alpha inhibitors?!” “Separate them, quick!”
Xu Fei stepped over a puddle of broken bottles. An out of control Alpha lunged at her, eyes bloodshot, using all his strength to try and escape.
Mei Qia: “Xu Fei, stop him!”
Xu Fei immediately shut the door, pressing her body against the handle, and twisted the lock.
The Alpha didn’t give up and tried to throw the “troublesome Beta” out of the way. However, just as he raised his hand, someone was much faster.
Xu Fei took a step back and, in the blink of an eye, moved behind him, delivering a sharp chop to his nape.
As the strike landed, the Alpha instantly blacked out.
Xu Fei grabbed his arm with one hand to prevent the customer from hitting the floor.
The usually quiet girl looked up, meeting the eyes of the colleagues who had come to assist.
Xu Fei asked, puzzled. “What’s wrong?”
The others: ?
Didn’t know you were this fierce.
Xu Fei joined the cleanup, rolling up her sleeves to reveal a pair of forearms with smooth muscle lines. She hadn’t played tennis in a long time, but she did plenty of manual labor, her former strength and reflexes were still there.
Even if the opponent was an Alpha, Xu Fei could suppress them to some extent.
She propped up her leg, pinning a person against a booth. She twisted the person’s arm back, and a colleague immediately placed an inhibitor in her hand.
Holding it up to the light to bleed out the air bubbles, Xu Fei held down the out of control Alpha and calmly injected the inhibitor.
Once the Alpha lost his strength, Xu Fei stood up, remembered to toss the empty inhibitor into the trash, and went to the utility room without a word to get cleaning tools to tidy up the wrecked lobby.
Holding the broom, she returned to her original well-behaved and silent demeanor. With her fawn-like eyes, she looked perfectly innocent, as if the “ruthless and silent” image from a moment ago was just a collective hallucination.
The bartender’s jaw dropped. “Sister Mei, where did you find Xu Fei?!”
Mei Qia wasn’t shocked, she had known for a long time that Xu Fei was strong and had a powerful physique.
Where did she come from…
“Picked her up in the rain.”
One day, after work, she had encountered the girl at the back door with nowhere to go. Xu Fei had looked at her, silent and reserved: “Are you still hiring? I can do anything.”
The lobby was cleaned. Xu Fei picked up a large bag of trash in each hand. While recalling ancient poems, she carried them to the back door to dispose of them.
On the way, she passed a private room.
Some guests who were severely affected were isolated inside, waiting for the inhibitors to take effect.
The closed door couldn’t block the Omega pheromones, the air was flooded with an overly thick sweetness.
Sensing Xu Fei’s approach, the pheromones found a target, tangling around her like vines, wanting to occupy her.
But just as they drew near, they were abruptly suppressed by another floral scent.
The white rose fragrance was very faint, perhaps just something she had picked up when the Omega helped her straighten her collar but despite being just a wisp, the aura was extremely dominant.
The soft petals wrapped around the Beta, silently announcing a fact. The person before you is already claimed.
The sweet scent, defeated, shrunk back sullenly.
Xu Fei was completely unaware. She twitched her nose, feeling strange.
Did all Omegas have a habit of wearing perfume? This person’s scent was so heavy.
It made her glands ache from the smell.
While the ceiling of the utility room was being repaired, Xu Fei moved into Mei Qia’s room to stay with her.
The boss’s apartment was rented above the bar, a one bedroom, one living room setup. It was just right for one person, but a bit crowded for two.
Mei Qia slept in the bed. Xu Fei slept on the sofa.
The next morning when she opened her eyes, Xu Fei felt a bout of dizziness.
Her glands, which had been non-existent for 17 years, decided to cause trouble too, clinging to the back of her neck as if they were on fire.
Mei Qia, having just finished the night shift, pushed open the door. “Xiao Fei, it’s time for school.”
She walked into the living room and saw Xu Fei slowly getting up, looking utterly dejected and listless. She raised an eyebrow. “Are you sick?”
Xu Fei’s eyes drooped, devoid of energy. “Maybe.”
“There’s a flu going around lately,” Mei Qia said, biting her toothbrush and not thinking much of it. “You’ve been studying too late, your immunity has dropped.”
Several times when she came home in the early morning to grab things, she had seen Xu Fei still grinding through problems.
“The exam is coming up. I want to do better.”
She didn’t mention the body wash.
Xu Fei looked in the mirror and pumped her fist to cheer herself up.
Once at school, her condition showed no signs of improvement; she remained dizzy and weak.
The most annoying part was the restlessness, not just heat, but an internal emptiness, a desperate desire to possess something, or to have someone fill her up.
When Zhu Nianxi arrived at school, the moment she entered the door, the morning breeze brought the first wisp of floral fragrance.
Xu Fei’s drifting thoughts found a home. All her focus tangled onto the Omega’s scent. Her agitated glands received comfort and briefly calmed down.
During the noon tutoring session, Xu Fei’s state had returned to normal, and she was even able to seriously work on a second Physics mini-test.
Sitting beside her, Zhu Nianxi sensed something different.
She smelled it again.
It was definitely coming from Xu Fei’s body.
“Finished.”
Xu Fei put down her pen, wanting to get up to go to the bathroom.
As soon as she rose, her arm was suddenly grabbed by the Omega. Zhu Nianxi applied force, pulling her entire person toward her.
Ah, am I not allowed to leave until it’s graded?
“Nianxi, what is it?”
Xu Fei was forced to lean over, meeting those dark, heavy eyes.
Her whole body froze. As she raised her hand, the Omega’s command reached her ears.
“Don’t move.”
Zhu Nianxi’s eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze scanning the “Beta” before her inch by inch.
The scent of oak drifted in the air.
She grabbed Xu Fei’s shirt collar and leaned in with her nose to sniff.
It wasn’t the clothes.
Was it from Xu Fei’s body?
Xu Fei didn’t dare move, her chin retracting to try and create just a little bit of distance.
But it was no use. Zhu Nianxi leaned even closer, her porcelain-white, delicate skin filling Xu Fei’s entire field of vision.
Her heart was about to leap out. Her fingertips felt slightly numb.
W-what was going on?
