- Chapter 11 - Beckoning Xu Fei with a Finger
After a week of tutoring, Xu Fei’s physics grades had improved significantly. The homework papers handed back to her were no longer completely covered in red marks.
She could get half of them right now.
For problems she previously couldn’t understand at all, she now only needed to glance at the prompt to understand exactly which points of knowledge were being tested, even if she couldn’t fully solve them yet.
Before this, she wouldn’t have dared to dream of such progress.
Zhu Nianxi lowered her eyelashes, turning the pages of the homework notebook with deliberate slowness.
Xu Fei stared at her, her throat going dry with nervousness.
“Not bad,” Zhu Nianxi remarked, her expression detached. She was clearly not entirely satisfied.
But when she looked at the Beta, encouragement still crept into her pitch-black eyes. “Feifei, let’s keep studying.”
Keep studying…
“Okay.”
Xu Fei swallowed her feeling of contentment and nodded happily.
The Omega’s voice was crisp and pleasing to the ear, filling the entire room alongside a cold, glamorous fragrance of roses.
Suddenly, the bushes of flowers began to sway, and flames ignited within the snow-like world.
Zhu Nianxi furrowed her brows. An ambiguous pink hue bloomed from the corners of her eyes, creeping across her entire face within seconds.
The time for the suppressor to lose its efficacy clearly hadn’t arrived yet.
Exhaling a breath of heat, she turned her head. Xu Fei had already prepared the suppressor. Her bright eyes gazed at her harmlessly, quietly awaiting her command.
Only when Zhu Nianxi nodded did Xu Fei unwrap the suppressor. Sitting properly in her own seat, she carefully pinned down the Omega’s smooth arm and pushed the injection in.
A boundless chill climbed up Zhu Nianxi’s spine, and the fire inside her was doused once more.
It was freezing, as if her very bones were turning to ice.
Unable to sit upright, Zhu Nianxi leaned back against the chair. As she lifted her head, the profile of her face and the line of her neck formed an elegant curve.
Xu Fei’s heart had already flown completely to the Omega. Seeing the Omega’s waist trembling uncontrollably, her heart nearly broke.
She raised her hand, her fingertips hovering in mid-air, not daring to draw closer.
Zhu Nianxi turned her head. Her deep, dark gaze easily saw right through Xu Fei. She let out a pale smile and beckoned with her finger.
“Feifei, hold me.”
Xu Fei had no strength to resist such a command. She crossed the line, standing up to wrap her arms around the Omega.
Zhu Nianxi rested her head against Xu Fei’s shoulder and closed her eyes.
Her face was excessively pale, with only the corners of her eyes and her knuckles retaining a residual pink from the heat period.
Noticing the Omega’s sharp chin, Xu Fei couldn’t help but tighten her embrace, easily measuring her slender figure with her arms.
It was an intrusive gesture, but the corners of Zhu Nianxi’s lips curved upwards. Her tone carried a hint of feigned reproach, yet her expression was relaxed. “Feifei, what are you doing?”
And so, Xu Fei thought to herself that Zhu Nianxi really needed companionship.
On Friday, as dismissal approached, the classmates became lively, discussing their weekend plans.
As Xu Fei was packing her schoolbag, Qin Weiran walked over and asked if she had time this weekend, wanting to invite her to play badminton.
“I’m sorry, I have…”
Before she could finish her sentence, Tao Yaqian looked up and answered for her. “Xu Fei has to work part-time on weekends. She’s busy earning money and doesn’t have time.”
“Yes,” Xu Fei choked on her words and zipped her bag. “Weiran, I’ll head out first.”
Qin Weiran felt a bit awkward. “Alright, see you Monday.”
Zhu Nianxi paid close attention to the conversation. As Xu Fei passed by her, she took two steps before purposely turning her head, her voice very quiet as her eyes gazed over. “Nianxi, see you Monday.”
In front of others, Zhu Nianxi returned to her flawless image of a rich young lady. She only smiled at Xu Fei, waving her hand. “Bye-bye.”
On the way home, sitting in the back seat, Zhu Nianxi recalled the conversation she had overheard earlier.
Tao Yaqian: “Is Xu Fei playing badminton again?”
Qin Weiran: “Yeah, badminton. She plays incredibly well.”
“She was a provincial champion, how could she not be good?”
Tao Yaqian paused, sighing pretentiously. “It’s a pity she couldn’t play anymore later on.”
The curiosity of several classmates around them was piqued.
Xu Fei was a provincial champion? You couldn’t tell at all.
Qin Weiran: “Why?”
Tao Yaqian tapped her own head. “She… has a sickness up here.”
The Maybach slowly drove into the green driveway in front of the villa.
The rain that had started on Wednesday hadn’t stopped even by Friday. It fell continuously, torturing people like a dull knife.
September was exactly the time when the bellflowers were in full bloom.
As a gentle breeze blew, patches of white and purple swayed in the wind, bringing a delicate scent of bellflowers.
Zhu Nianxi stopped to watch, a soft smile appearing at the corners of her lips.
Suddenly, she noticed a missing patch right in the center of the flowerbed. Someone had picked the flowers and more than just one.
Yan Fu looked over, and her heart instantly skipped a beat.
When she looked back at Zhu Nianxi, the Omega’s pure black eyes were filled with absolute coldness.
An outsider had been inside the house, the grand lobby was filled with a nauseating odor.
She slowly ascended the stairs.
A servant passed by, quickly glancing upstairs before greeting her, “Nianxi is back.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she fled downstairs as if escaping a disaster.
An argument was echoing from the second floor hallway.
“Miss Ning, please get out! You cannot enter this room!”
“Why can’t I enter? Isn’t this also Zhu Tianyu’s room? Wen Xi has been dead for how many years now?”
Ning Wanyi posed in front of the mirror, adjusting a bellflower in her hair. Looking left and right, she grew dissatisfied and yanked it off, slamming it fiercely onto the table.
“What rubbish, so incredibly bland.”
Auntie Wang looked pooling with heartache at the withered little white flower, quickly picking it up. She couldn’t let Little Xi see this.
Before she could act, a voice as cold as ice rang out alongside the sound of crisp footsteps.
“Get out.”
Zhu Nianxi stood at the doorway, her hand gripping the doorknob so hard her knuckles turned white.
The moment she saw the woman’s face, the injury on her right leg was triggered. It felt as if a torrential rainstorm had begun indoors, with countless raindrops turning into needles pricking her body. Every breath brought a deeper sense of agony.
Auntie Wang’s expression changed instantly. “Little Xi, she’s leaving right now.”
Ning Wanyi smiled flamboyantly: “Oh, isn’t this Nianxi? School’s out. Your dad is back…”
Zhu Nianxi didn’t have the patience to let her finish. This time, she raised her volume. “Didn’t you hear me? Get out.”
“How dare you speak to an elder like that!” Ning Wanyi was about to step closer to Zhu Nianxi when Yan Fu stepped forward with the bodyguards, grabbing her and dragging her straight out.
The woman’s curses gradually faded into the distance.
Zhu Nianxi picked up the bellflower, cradling it gently in her hands. She looked at the panicked Auntie Wang and instructed:
“Auntie Wang, the entire room needs to be cleaned.”
The old photograph on the vanity stood witness to this repeating farce.
In it, a woman in a white dress smiled very gently, her arms crossed, cradling a little girl in her embrace.
Zhu Nianxi locked eyes with her for a few seconds before turning her gaze away.
In the hallway, Ning Wanyi struggled to break free from the bodyguards’ grip. “I can walk myself!”
She had once moved into this magnificent villa, but she only stayed for seven days before being driven out.
Every single time, it was because of Zhu Nianxi.
Looking at the sky outside, Ning Wanyi laughed out loud. Her gaze swept over Zhu Nianxi’s right leg, which was covered by her knee-high socks, and she said meaningfully, “So it’s raining. No wonder you’re so irritable.”
Zhu Nianxi ignored her, her expression remaining as indifferent as always.
The more she acted this way, the angrier Ning Wanyi became. It felt as though no matter what, she would forever be inferior in front of Zhu Nianxi.
She was nothing but… she was nothing but a…
Ning Wanyi cursed under her breath. “Cripple.”
Zhu Nianxi acted as if she hadn’t heard a thing, her downward steps not faltering in the slightest.
Finding no amusement, Ning Wanyi accelerated her pace as she passed Zhu Nianxi. Being around her was quite terrifying.
There were only two steps left.
In her haste to leave, she didn’t notice Zhu Nianxi taking the long-handled umbrella from Yan Fu’s hand and lightly blocking her path.
“Ah!!”
Ning Wanyi’s foot slipped, and she fell straight down the stairs. The marble floor was hard, and blood drew the moment she struck it.
She collapsed on the ground, painfully clutching her ankle, which was already swollen. The bone was likely dislocated.
Countless gazes from the first floor turned toward the two of them.
Just then, Zhu Tianyu rushed back from outside.
“What is everyone doing?!”
Zhu Nianxi stood on the steps, her downward gaze cold and empty.
“It seems someone is about to become a cripple.”
A cold sweat broke out over Ning Wanyi.
Zhu Nianxi’s eyes… she looked disappointed.
Or rather, was this a height she had calculated?
She wanted to find someone to bear witness, but no matter who she looked at, everyone avoided her gaze.
Ning Wanyi didn’t doubt for a second that every single one of them would help Zhu Nianxi.
“Madwoman,” Ning Wanyi was helped up by Zhu Tianyu, still shaken. “Your daughter is a madwoman.”
Zhu Tianyu turned his head, not daring to look too much at the Omega’s face either. He quickly dragged the woman outside, scolding Ning Wanyi back. “Why did you have to provoke her!”
The figures of the two vanished past the edge of their vision.
Zhu Nianxi walked downstairs, her polished black leather shoes stepping right beside the bright red bloodstain.
Night fell.
After finishing her meal, Zhu Nianxi wore a bamboo hat into the flowerbed to bury the bellflowers back into the soil.
Her fingers brushed past the tiny flower buds, feeling the tenderness wrapping around her fingertips.
The language of the bellflower is “missing someone.”
Pianistic music drifted from upstairs. Everyone who worked at the Zhu household knew that this was Zhu Nianxi’s habit, she practiced the piano every evening.
Today, a newcomer had joined the staff.
Having witnessed the scene from the afternoon, her perception of the entire house had changed. She felt as though a ghostly aura lingered everywhere.
“What on earth happened?” The newcomer asked curiously, already plotting an 800 episodes wealthy family drama in her mind.
A senior worker answered, “Don’t blame Nianxi. It hasn’t been easy for her. Her birth mother’s estate was completely taken over, and her birth father doesn’t act like a human being. She’s pitiful.”
The newcomer pricked up her ears, and the senior worker recalled the past.
In its early years, Huantai International didn’t go by this name, nor was it this large.
It was only after Zhu Nianxi’s Omega mother, Wen Xi, and her Alpha father, Zhu Tianyu, entered an arranged marriage that their two respective family companies reorganized and merged, developing into its current scale.
The true matriarch of the Zhu family was Old Madam Zhu, and Zhu Tianyu was her only son.
It was said that Zhu Tianyu and Wen Xi were childhood sweethearts, and this marriage was entirely orchestrated by Old Madam Zhu.
Unfortunately, Wen Xi was in poor health and passed away due to illness when Zhu Nianxi was seven years old. Before the first seven days of mourning had even passed, her father immediately brought his mistress through the door.
Old Madam Zhu turned a blind eye and allowed it.
During those few years, Zhu Nianxi lived with the Wen family.
“And then?”
“Old Madam Wen died too, so Zhu Nianxi came back. And after that, a kidnapping case happened…”
“Kidnapping?!” The newcomer was shocked. She had never seen anything about such a major event online.
“It was suppressed,” the senior worker shook her head, bringing up another frustrating matter. “Let’s not talk about it anymore. In short, just know that Nianxi’s leg isn’t good. She can’t stand for long and can’t do strenuous exercise. But she doesn’t like people paying too much attention to it, so just be mindful usually.”
As the night deepened, the rain grew heavier.
The newcomer was assigned to deliver the suppressor.
Standing at the bedroom door, she took a long breath, mentally preparing herself.
Even though she now knew the background story, what she had seen and heard this afternoon was simply too impactful.
The thought of facing Zhu Nianxi in a moment made her feel apprehensive.
She knocked on the door, and a voice sounded from within. “Come in.”
The temperature inside the room was very high. Zhu Nianxi had changed into a long nightgown and was sitting on a chair by the window, her fingers interlaced as she gazed at the rain tracing down the glass pane.
The closer she got, the stronger the visual impact became. She really couldn’t help but steal a few more glances.
Setting aside whether she was crazy or not, she was truly beautiful…
She had never seen an Omega with such delicate features, a small head and a small face. She had seen photos of Wen Xi, and she could tell the teenage girl’s eyes and lips looked very much like her mother’s.
She set down the suppressor: “Miss, I’ve left it on the table.”
Zhu Nianxi looked over. Her expression wasn’t as gloomy as what she had seen this afternoon, but it wasn’t much warmer either.
Noticing that the person was a new face, she nodded. “You can just call me by my name. Thank you for your trouble.”
The worker hummed in response, preparing to leave.
Just as she took a step, a call came from behind her.
Zhu Nianxi gazed at her, hesitating to speak: “Sister, do you know how to tie…”
The worker’s heart trembled slightly at this title. At this moment, she realized that the person before her was merely a seventeen-year-old minor.
“What is it?” she asked.
Zhu Nianxi remained silent for a few seconds. The right leg hidden beneath her long gown retracted slightly, and she shook her head. “It’s nothing. Good night.”
How polite…
The worker also smiled, adopting the name the others in the villa used. “Little Xi, good night.”
Once the person left, Zhu Nianxi picked up the syringe of suppressor. Unlike Xu Fei’s tenderness, she plunged the needle straight into her arm, and the medicine rapidly disappeared before her eyes.
Turning the air conditioner up by two degrees, she crawled into the blankets, yet she still felt cold.
Zhu Nianxi curled herself up. Reaching her hand downward to touch her right leg, her trembling fingertips adjusted the position of the heat pack.
Xu Fei had bought a lot of them, giving them all to her at once.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t tie it as well as Xu Fei did.
Zhu Nianxi closed her eyes, recalling the scent she had smelled on Xu Fei this afternoon.
Broad and warm.
It reminded her of sunlight filtering through a dense canopy of trees, shining upon the earth, bringing out the crisp scent of soil and an oakwood aroma full of vitality.
What was that?
Do Betas have pheromones too?
She wanted it.
