To shake off the stigma of being the son of a disgraced official, Shen Yi entered the palace disguised as a woman to clear his family’s name. There, he encountered the one person he least wanted to see: Chu Yun. Chu Yun is capricious and temperamental murder is an everyday occurrence for him but his appearance is truly peerless. Shen Yi doesn’t want to see him, yet he finds himself forced to rely on him, utilizing Chu Yun’s power to clear his family name. In the process, he finds himself trapped in the quagmire of the imperial court, becoming a tool for Chu Yun’s desires. Just as he is about to resign himself to his fate, he accidentally discovers the novel that governs this world. It states that only by killing Chu Yun can he return to the reality he knows. That night, under the cover of darkness, Shen Yi takes up a sword and walks into the Emperor’s bedchamber.
Shen Yi, the head of the civil officials, dies in a great fire. That day, Chu Yun, the Emperor, cradles Shen Yi’s remains for days on end. From the mass grave where they first met to the dungeon where they once tied their hair in a vow, nothing works to bring him back. Finally, Chu Yun kneels in the Guanyin temple for days, begging only for a life to be exchanged for a life. As he draws his sword to end his own life, he discovers that the body of “Shen Yi” was not his at all. Furious, he immediately orders a thorough investigation.
Shen Yi, unaware that his plan has been exposed, is happily eating skewers in the State of Yan. He has established the number-one sect there, solely to usurp the throne and have some fun playing Emperor. He pats his protruding belly, preparing to name his unborn child the Crown Prince. Unexpectedly, a eunuch arrives to pay a visit, inviting Shen Yi to a polo match. Shen Yi gladly accepts. When he sees his opponent, his face instantly changes color. Shen Yi: “My hen is having a birthday; I must leave first.” Chu Yun: “Do you really think you can get away?”
