- Chapter 10 - Shameless: Doctor Yan the Miraculous Healer, Wishing Me the Return of My Manhood
Leaving the department of reproductive medicine, Wen Xiaomian clutched his report and headed to the vending machine near the garage for a cola. As he turned, he caught the sound of a commotion in the corner.
“He was the one who said he had your child in his stomach! I just expressed a little surprise. Am I in the wrong?”
“The news says it is possible for men to have children. I was exploring the unknown and seeking knowledge in the scientific field. Am I in the wrong?”
“And he punished me by making me write three reports on difficult case discussions? Good heavens, my mother and my great-uncles! If I knew how to write those at all, my brain would not have malfunctioned enough to study medicine!”
“What is the use of being handsome? He is still devious, treacherous, ruthless, and gloomy!”
“Yo, speaking ill of someone?”
Upon seeing the man’s face, Hu Xiaona reacted like a startled grasshopper. She sprang half a meter away with a jolt, not forgetting to give herself a life-or-death multiple-choice question.
Question: When you are insulting your mentor, you are overheard by someone he knows. Half an hour ago, that same person claimed to be pregnant with your mentor’s child. What should you do now?
-
- Deny it flatly. B. Plead guilty and commit suicide. C. Silence the witness. D. Launch a verbal crusade.
Oh, whatever! At worst, I will quit medicine and take up literature. Who has not dreamed of being the next Lu Xun?
Hu Xiaona smoothed her hair. “Hey, uh, hand, handsome guy.”
“Nice insults.”
“Huh?”
“Keep up the hard work.” Wen Xiaomian handed her a bottle of cola. “Take it to the next level.”
Hu Xiaona held the cola bottle, her eyes blinking dozens of times, still unable to make sense of the situation.
Reality is a mess and life is fleeting, but soda is the real deal. Forget it, drink first and talk later!
“Thank you, handsome!”
Hu Xiaona gulped down the cola, thinking to herself that free stuff always tastes better.
“Let me ask you something.” Wen Xiaomian unscrewed his own bottle. “What kind of patient does your Doctor Yan hate the most?”
On the surface, Hu Xiaona said, “Ah? Why?”
But in her heart, she thought: Can you have a little self-awareness? Is someone like you not annoying enough already? To what extent do you want to be hated?
Wen Xiaomian said, “Let us hear it.”
Hu Xiaona replied, “He probably hates those who pursue him relentlessly.”
“Relentlessly in what way?”
Hu Xiaona leaned in and whispered like a thief, “Handsome, since you treated me to a drink, I will give you some gossip.”
According to Hu Xiaona, earlier this year, a patient took a liking to Yan Ruixing. It was a man.
At first, Yan Ruixing did not take it seriously and only offered a polite refusal. However, the other party was persistent, blocking his path at the hospital every day and sending roses for a week straight.
Yan Ruixing finally lost his patience, called the police, and only then did things quiet down.
Wen Xiaomian was not surprised. He asked again, “Anything else? What else does he hate?”
“Offering red envelopes, for sure.”
“Anything else? Tell me everything you can think of.”
Hu Xiaona rubbed her chin and thought for a moment, realizing there were too many to count. “Actually, as long as it is contact outside of medical treatment, Doctor Yan is quite repulsed by it. Even giving him a commemorative silk banner will not get a smile out of him.”
Wen Xiaomian nodded. “Which day is he the least busy?”
“Tuesday, of course.”
On that day, Yan Ruixing only attended meetings and did not see patients. It was the only day Hu Xiaona could get off work on time.
Wen Xiaomian left a “Thank you” and turned to leave.
Hu Xiaona held the soda bottle, watching his retreating back.
He is so handsome and even treated me to a cola. He is as rare as Lu Xun! It is just a pity that he suffers from a serious illness, and his mental state might be a bit abnormal.
Sigh, let me help him leave a memento.
Hu Xiaona took out her phone and aimed it at Wen Xiaomian’s back.
The camera shutter clicked repeatedly.
After posting to her social circle, Hu Xiaona went back to look at the photos. Even though he is undeniably handsome, my photography skills are truly excellent. Good, I am going to order a Spicy McChicken Burger tonight.
ENT Second Clinic
Having finished all his plans for the day, Yan Ruixing was preparing to leave work when Sang Han rushed in frantically. “Is Kian Wen sick?”
Faced with her recklessness, Yan Ruixing did not react immediately.
“Stop pretending!” Sang Han grabbed his shoulders and shook him hard. “Hu Xiaona posted it on her social circle! Kian Wen came to your department for treatment, and you actually did not notify me!”
Yan Ruixing opened his phone. Hu Xiaona’s last post was from half a month ago, an advertisement about the provincial hospital.
Sang Han opened her own social feed and showed it to him. “You should reflect on how you are as a mentor. You have managed to make every trainee and intern block you.”
“…”
Yan Ruixing looked at the screen. It was a photo of a back, with the caption:
[Met a handsome guy at work today. He is a head taller than me and impossibly good-looking. He even treated me to a cola. But God has been unkind to him! Crying, crying, crying.]
Besides the post itself, the comment section was lively, filled with familiar trainees and interns.
“I do not believe it unless I see his face.” “Who is more handsome, him or Doctor Yan?” “Doctor Yan is elegant; this guy is cool and handsome.” “When is his follow-up appointment? I want to go watch!”
Hu Xiaona did not follow Formula One, so she naturally did not recognize him. But as his number one fan, Sang Han recognized Kian Wen at a glance.
The comments were too long to scroll through. Yan Ruixing had no interest in gossip and handed the phone back. “They have too little homework and too much free time.”
Sang Han was like a pressure cooker about to burst. “Do not change the subject! Why did you not tell me?”
“I was afraid you could not handle it.”
“What could I not handle?” Sang Han gasped as a cold premonition hit her. “Is it, is his condition very serious?”
“More than that.”
Sang Han held onto the corner of the table, her vision turning dark. “Then, what else?”
“You also argued with him in the middle of the night and called him,” Yan Ruixing patted her shoulder as a form of consolation, “a big, stupid, idiot.”
Sang Han’s expression froze, her eyes went blank, and her colorful life became bizarre and tragic. “AHHHHHHHH!”
Yan Ruixing could not empathize with Sang Han’s grief. The grieving woman turned her pain into a vacation and started a trip to Bali the very next day.
As for Yan Ruixing, he never gave himself a holiday; his time was entirely occupied by work.
After a meeting that day, people were coming and going in the corridor. A man was standing at his office door. “Doctor Yan, you have finally arrived.”
Yan Ruixing had never seen this man before. He looked like a family member of a patient. He had a silk banner tucked under his arm, and the corner of a red envelope peeked out from his pocket.
Yan Ruixing’s gaze darkened. “Is there something I can help you with?”
The man squeezed the banner under his arm and patted his pocket, glancing at the passing strangers. “Doctor Yan, shall we go inside to talk?”
Yan Ruixing looked up at the surveillance camera overhead. “We can speak right here.”
The man did not waste time. He pulled out the red envelope, unfurled the silk banner, and held it up with both hands. “Thank you for saving our boss’s life! The boss sent me to thank you! I wish Doctor Yan a long life and eternal happiness!”
Yan Ruixing: “…”
Before the current farce could be resolved, another voice came from behind him. “Doctor Yan, we are here too!”
“The boss wants us to thank you!”
“Wishing you a long life and eternal happiness!”
A few meters away, four men holding a giant bouquet of roses shouted in unison, “Doctor Yan, thank you for giving our boss a new life!”
“You gave him a man’s second life!”
“Wishing you a long life and eternal happiness!”
During five years of secondary school, Yan Ruixing wondered every day if Wen Xiaomian was his nemesis and why things had reached this point between them.
At this very moment, Yan Ruixing was absolutely convinced that his feud with Wen Xiaomian could not be resolved in ten lifetimes. One of them had to die for the world to have peace!
After a chaotic day, Yan Ruixing did not feel at peace until he got home.
But Sang Han still had to call to provoke him. “My dear, I heard someone was madly declaring their love for you at your office door?”
“They were not.” Yan Ruixing tried to remain rational, but his temper was flaring.
“Do not hide it! The whole hospital knows!”
Someone had sent Yan Ruixing 99,999 roses. It took four or five strong men to carry them to his office door.
But Yan Ruixing did not even blink as he threw the men and the roses out. Later, the roses were separated and given to female patients, female medical staff, and married or partnered male colleagues. Even the security guard, Old Man Zhang, took a bundle to give to his wife.
“Oh, why did I have to go on vacation right now?” Sang Han laughed like a flock of geese. “Can you help me ask Old Man Zhang for a single stem?”
Yan Ruixing suppressed a volcanic eruption. “If there is nothing else, I am hanging up.”
“Wait, wait! I am not finished yet.” Sang Han caught him on the phone like she was grabbing a goose. “I heard that person also stuffed four big red envelopes? Each big envelope had 250 small ones inside, and each small one had a Baby Bus SVIP voucher?”
Yan Ruixing: “…”
Because Yan Ruixing refused them, the vouchers were given to families and patients with children, and they were given in Yan Ruixing’s name. Old Man Zhang collected three vouchers for his grandson and granddaughter.
On the other end of the line, Sang Han was rolling around laughing. “HAHAHAHAHAHA! Is this for real? Hahaha, it is real! HAHAHAHAHA!”
The past was too painful to recall; Yan Ruixing wanted to go to the kitchen to get a knife.
“But I heard you accepted the silk banner? Your face was red? You even took it home?” Sang Han laughed until she was breathless. “What is written on it? It actually made Doctor Yan blush! It could not be that Baby Bus was changed to another bus?”
Yan Ruixing looked at the silk banner he had thrown near the trash can.
[Doctor Yan Ruixing, a Miraculous Healer with a Benevolent Heart] [Helping Me Regain My Confidence as a Man]
Yan Ruixing went to the kitchen, and the knife was already in his hand.
“Let me guess. Who would be so generous and send something so heartfelt yet unexpected?” Sang Han hiccuped from laughing. “It could not be, hic, our big handsome guy, hic, Kian Wen?”
A dark cloud loomed over Yan Ruixing’s head. He held the kitchen knife and slashed at the silk banner, his eyes lingering on the signature at the bottom: [Sent by Mister Wen Xiaomian, the World’s Number One Most Handsome Person Who Is Unwilling to Reveal His Name].
The call was cut off. The shredded banner was thrown back into the trash. There was the sound of a delivery at the door.
Halfway through unpacking the parcel, Yan Ruixing sensed something was wrong, and he immediately received a text message.
Wen Xiaomian: [Doctor Yan does not like roses and Baby Bus? Then I can only send something sincere.]
The delivery box was opened. It was wrapped tightly in over ten layers of bubble wrap. Inside was a pair of red underwear.
Wen Xiaomian: [Doctor Yan, do you like it? I carefully selected it for you as a late gift for your zodiac year.]
Yan Ruixing clicked into his WeChat settings.
