- Chapter 9 - Follow-up Consultation: Dr. Yan, You Have to Take Responsibility for Me.
Having been set up, Wen Xiaomian’s face fell. “Forget it. I will just try my best to stay alive and give birth to three children for you.”
“You are so fertile that I cannot afford to raise them,” Yan Ruixing shot him a glare. “I can only keep the children and get rid of the father.”
“Do not worry about the money. I can join your family with a dowry and guarantee you and the children a lifetime of luxury and wealth.”
Yan Ruixing stopped bickering with him and tossed the plastic bag into the trash can. “Go back. You and the children should go to sleep.”
“Alright, husband.” Wen Xiaomian pretended to stick out his belly and rubbed his abdominal muscles. “The children are indeed sleepy.”
“Shut up.”
The two packed their things and left. Following Yan Ruixing’s directions, the car pulled over at the “Weekend” Bakery by the roadside, which was only a ten-minute walk from Yan Ruixing’s home.
Yan Ruixing reminded him not to stay up late and to remember to take his medicine before bed, then said goodbye and left.
As it was nearly 10:00 PM, only the owner remained in the bakery.
“Xiao Mo, sorry to keep you waiting.”
Fang Yuanmo quickly replied, “It is no problem, Dr. Yan. It is not closing time yet.”
Yan Ruixing frequently came here to buy coconut cake: sugar-free and healthy. However, they truly became acquainted because Yan Ruixing had once performed surgery on the owner’s grandmother.
Fang Yuanmo handed him the prepared coconut cake.
Yan Ruixing pointed to the strawberry mousse in the glass display case. “Give me a piece of this one, too.”
Before this, Yan Ruixing only bought sugar-free items. Fang Yuanmo kindly reminded him, “This one is very sweet.”
“It is alright.” The sweetness of the strawberry pie lingered in Yan Ruixing’s mouth. “I want to eat it once in a while.”
When he left the bakery, Wen Xiaomian’s car was still parked by the roadside. As Yan Ruixing approached, the driver’s side window slid down.
“Why haven’t you left yet?” Yan Ruixing leaned over.
Wen Xiaomian looked away as if casually. “What if someone bought a cake for me?”
” ”
Wishful thinking.
Yan Ruixing sat back in the passenger seat and handed him the coconut cake.
Wen Xiaomian eyed the other portion in his hand. “What is that one?”
“Strawberry mousse.”
“I want that piece.”
“Alright.” Yan Ruixing packed the cake away. “No.”
“Stingy.” Wen Xiaomian drove toward Yan Ruixing’s house and asked casually, “Are you very close with the bakery owner?”
“It is okay.” Yan Ruixing watched his reaction. “Do you know him?”
“He was my junior in university.”
“Then have you seen ‘Fang Henjin’?”
Wen Xiaomian thought for a few seconds before remembering that “Fang Henjin” was the Corgi raised by Fang Yuanmo. “The bucket dog, what about it?”
Yan Ruixing analyzed the meaning of “bucket.” “Is it very fat?”
“You haven’t seen it?”
“No, but I always hear Xiao Mo mention it.”
He said Fang Henjin would do anything for food: jumping around, rummaging through cabinets, and when caught, it would show watery eyes, rub against his pant legs, and whimper to act pitiful.
“It is more than just fat; it is so fat that its belly touches the ground, and its waist is as thick as if it were pregnant with eight litters.” Wen Xiaomian recalled the bucket dog without giving it any face. “And its legs are so short that it even struggles to go down the stairs.”
Yan Ruixing felt a bit uncomfortable hearing this and tried to defend the dog. “Corgis have short legs to begin with.”
“Then it is the king of short legs, the ultimate among the short.”
“You are the short one, shut up!”
“Defending the dog like this.” Wen Xiaomian pondered his hidden thoughts. “Do you like dogs?”
“No, just asking.”
Wen Xiaomian scoffed inwardly, then said, “Do not look at how fat that bucket is; under its sister’s guidance, it jumps incredibly high and rummages through the school trash cans all day.”
“It has a sister?” Yan Ruixing turned his head, his eyes shining as if they had just been washed. “Is she also a Corgi?”
Wen Xiaomian caught a glimpse of his eyes and turned back to look again. “She is a calico cat named ‘Fang Buyuan,’ quite pretty. Back in university, Fang Yuanmo raised the two of them in the fighting club.”
“I haven’t heard Xiao Mo mention that.”
“The couple had a falling out and separated, so the two ‘children’ were forced to split up.”
“What?” Yan Ruixing turned his head.
Wen Xiaomian made a gesture of zipping his lips. “Time to go home.”
After dropping off Yan Ruixing, Wen Xiaomian returned to the “Weekend” Bakery and bought out all the cakes in the shop. He kept one strawberry mousse for himself and sent the rest to Chen Jinzhou.
Then he drove home, took his medicine, took a photo, and went to sleep.
In the following days, aside from sending daily videos of him taking his medicine, the two had no extra contact, becoming as bland as ordinary colleagues on a contact list.
Today was the day for the follow-up consultation. Near the end of the shift, Yan Ruixing checked the pre-registration list, and Wen Xiaomian’s name was on it.
After seeing the second-to-last patient, Hu Xiaona stretched and pressed the calling device.
A mechanical female voice came from outside the consultation room: “Patient number 36, Wen Xiaomian, please go to Consultation Room 2.”
The system called three times with no response. Hu Xiaona pressed the calling device twice more, but still, no one answered.
Yan Ruixing checked the location on his phone. “Call again.”
It was not uncommon for patients to register and not show up. Hu Xiaona’s mind was already on her way to a big meal, but Yan Ruixing would not let her go and insisted she keep pressing.
Hu Xiaona repeatedly jammed the calling device. While appearing calm on the surface, she scolded Yan Ruixing eight hundred times in her mind.
The Otoneurological Skull Base department was the fifth department Hu Xiaona had rotated through, and she had never seen anyone as fond of working as Yan Ruixing. She often felt that Yan Ruixing should visit the psychiatry department; curing his addiction to work was the right path.
After calling more than ten times, Yan Ruixing confirmed again that Wen Xiaomian’s location was in the hospital. He swiped open his phone.
“Can’t you hear your number being called?” “Is a nerve being compressed?”
The other side did not reply, so Yan Ruixing dialed the number.
The ringtone sounded outside the door, and a man in a formal suit burst in. “Just how much do you miss me to be rushing me like this?”
At her first glimpse of Wen Xiaomian, the exhausted worker Hu Xiaona felt as if she had eaten a Snickers bar from an advertisement. “Oh my god! So handsome!”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Yan Ruixing’s gaze cut over like a blade. Hu Xiaona quickly covered her mouth and swallowed.
“Mother, protect me!” “Cold-faced Divine Blade, stay away!”
“Cold-faced Divine Blade” was the nickname the interns had given Yan Ruixing.
Wen Xiaomian was very satisfied with Hu Xiaona’s reaction. Just as he was about to ask if she wanted a beauty card or a shopping voucher, he was interrupted by the large block of ice who could speak.
“State the situation, keep it brief.”
When Yan Ruixing was performing his official duties, he spoke to everyone like a stranger, unwilling to give even half a bit of emotion; he did not even look at him seriously.
Wen Xiaomian hated his cold attitude and resented his act of being unfamiliar. At least a week ago, they had shared a box of stinky tofu and a wrap. When talking about dogs, Yan Ruixing’s eyes could even sparkle for him.
“State what?” Since the other party wanted to avoid being associated, Wen Xiaomian insisted on getting closer. “The top or the bottom? The inside or the outside?”
His tone was sarcastic and his words were ill-intentioned. It was unknown what Yan Ruixing was thinking, but Hu Xiaona was already holding a steel spoon, standing on the front lines of the gossip.
Her waist no longer ached, she was no longer hungry, her legs did not hurt, and she was in no hurry to finish work. She waited eagerly to consume the first-hand happiness.
Yan Ruixing finally deigned to look up, but he was still as indifferent as a stranger. “You can state everything.”
Wen Xiaomian pressed his lower abdomen. “Our child keeps kicking me before bed. What should I do?”
“Oh my god! What a show!” Hu Xiaona almost could not hold it in.
“It is burning! It is boiling!” “I have stumbled upon an earth-shattering gossip!”
Feeling the anger signal from the wristband, Wen Xiaomian pushed his luck. “Dr. Yan, you are not planning to avoid taking responsibility, are you?”
His patience had reached its limit. Yan Ruixing did not want to waste a single second with him. “Go to the fourth floor, turn left to the reproductive department to check if you have any functions first, then go to the psychiatry department on the sixth floor.”
“Alright.” Wen Xiaomian continued to be disgusting. “Then if there really is a child, Dr. Yan must take responsibility for me.”
Having succeeded in his scheme, Wen Xiaomian naturally did not stay long. Having nothing better to do, he actually went to the reproductive department.
He registered with an old, white-bearded expert and began talking nonsense to the old man, saying he had the heart but not the strength: he wanted to work hard but could not get an erection, his hands could not help him, and he could not even get it up while watching videos. Before he was even thirty, he had lost the joy and vitality of a man.
The old expert’s face was covered in wrinkles. Looking at the young man who seemed full of vitality, he did not look like his description at all.
But theory is always shallow; science reveals the truth. The old expert ordered a bunch of tests for him.
Half an hour later, the old expert held the test results and gave a satisfied smile. “Young man, from a reproductive standpoint, you are very healthy.”
The old expert looked at him again. His shifty-eyed appearance was a bit unsettling. “In that aspect, you are also very strong.”
“How about going to the psychiatry department on the sixth floor to have a look?”
