- Become The Domesticated Pet Cat of a Mature, Bossy Lady Superior
- Chapter 57 - The Little Cat's Confusion - She is Shi Xinyu
It was the middle of the night.
Ying Miaomiao had slept long enough. She opened her eyes hazily and saw a familiar yet strange ceiling.
It was Shi Xinyu’s house.
Since turning into a cat, she had spent almost all her time here, except for the initial two days.
After adapting, she had returned to her own home.
Ying Miaomiao blinked twice. The light breathing beside her made her realize that Shi Xinyu was right there.
The curtains were tightly drawn, blocking out even a sliver of moonlight. Only a small night light was on, casting light on Shi Xinyu’s profile.
Her gaze swept over every inch of Shi Xinyu’s skin: her brows, her eyes, her lips.
The remaining memory told Ying Miaomiao exactly what had happened between them earlier. It was a moment of irresistible passion, a natural progression, a willful ignorance.
…
It was another workday.
Ying Miaomiao hung her head, staring blankly at her toes. The lighting in the underground garage was dim, and she could only faintly see a shadow, which was condensed into a small ball under the light.
In front of her was the wide-open car door. Shi Xinyu sat in the driver’s seat, watching her with immense patience.
Her amber-colored eyes reflected a circle of light, mirroring the hesitant Ying Miaomiao. Shi Xinyu’s expression was consistently gentle, like an unemotional deity.
Or like the statue of the Virgin Mary in a church.
Flawless, without flaw.
A faint smile was on Shi Xinyu’s fair face, with a lustrous pearl dangling from her earlobe. “Miaomiao, let’s go.”
Today was a workday, and they were going to work together.
For some reason, Ying Miaomiao especially didn’t want to be alone with Shi Xinyu today. She was afraid she might accidentally say something hurtful, or that she might be too rash and actually learn that answer.
But under Shi Xinyu’s gaze, she still got into the car.
Sitting in the passenger seat, she stiffly fastened her seatbelt. Ying Miaomiao kept her lips slightly pursed, only feeling that the atmosphere between them was exceptionally strange, yet Shi Xinyu casually asked her what she wanted for breakfast.
“Dumplings, the ones next to the company.”
Ying Miaomiao often went to that shop. The auntie at the breakfast shop made delicious dumplings, and she was quick about it. Visually confirmed, they were freshly wrapped, not frozen.
A good-tasting shop was never short of customers.
Taking advantage of the early hour, Shi Xinyu drove to the shop.
The red light turned on.
Shi Xinyu stepped on the brake, her movements calm and steady.
In this confined space, her scent quietly spread throughout the car: a faint scent of quiet orchid mixed with the clean fragrance of the same shower gel.
Ying Miaomiao was now very proficient at distinguishing Shi Xinyu’s scent.
Ying Miaomiao was usually chatty, but today she just looked out the window, occasionally glancing up when a muffled horn sounded.
Just as the traffic light was about to change, Shi Xinyu asked, “Are you unhappy?”
These four words were spoken extremely softly, like a whisper, so quiet that Ying Miaomiao barely heard anything. She turned her head, and Shi Xinyu suddenly stepped on the accelerator.
She opened her mouth, but not a single word came out.
Until they arrived at the dumpling shop.
The familiar shop entrance came into view. Ying Miaomiao got out of the passenger seat and waited for Shi Xinyu. Shi Xinyu’s brows were slightly furrowed, and she held her phone in one hand, seemingly replying to a message, causing Ying Miaomiao to swallow her question.
The dumpling shop’s storefront wasn’t large, with only a handful of seats. Fortunately, they had arrived early, and there were not many people.
Ying Miaomiao skillfully ordered her breakfast, then turned to look at Shi Xinyu, only to see her looking down at the menu, her light voice saying, “The same as hers.”
Carrying a heart full of doubt, Ying Miaomiao and Shi Xinyu went together to a corner seat.
The space at this table was cramped; the two bowls of dumplings took up most of the surface.
Ying Miaomiao laid two napkins on the table. The scalding hot dumplings were set down, and a little soup had sloshed out.
The ceiling fan in the small restaurant was creaking overhead, but there was no breeze. The piping hot dumplings between them gradually distorted and blurred their vision.
Ying Miaomiao subconsciously handed the spoon to Shi Xinyu first.
Shi Xinyu was slightly taken aback, and her amber eyes suddenly filled with a hint of a smile. “Thank you.”
Ying Miaomiao stiffened for a moment. She mumbled, “You’re welcome. What did you say in the car just now?”
Once the first sentence was out, the remaining words seemed to flow more smoothly. She looked anxiously at Shi Xinyu, who was scooping up a dumpling and slowly blowing on it to cool it down.
Hearing Ying Miaomiao’s question, Shi Xinyu finally looked up, her gaze resting on Ying Miaomiao’s visibly nervous face.
“Are you unhappy?”
Shi Xinyu repeated it word for word. She lowered her eyes. The surface of the dumpling she had just scooped up was already dry, and the cabbage and pork filling could be vaguely seen beneath the transparent skin.
Ying Miaomiao was speechless. She could no longer tell Shi Xinyu definitively that she was very happy and had no concerns.
But silence was often the answer.
Shi Xinyu said nothing. In silence, she ate the dumpling, which was only cool on the outside, and showed no reaction even though it was scalding hot.
Ying Miaomiao bit her lip, lowered her head, and suddenly felt a little frustrated. She still couldn’t say those words, even though… even though the atmosphere had warmed up.
She poured a small dish of vinegar and placed it between them. “Let’s eat the dumplings.”
But facing the clearly dejected Shi Xinyu, Ying Miaomiao suddenly felt that it was unfair. She was being unfair to Shi Xinyu.
She was making unilateral suspicions, unilaterally assuming Shi Xinyu was a certain way. What was the difference between that and betraying herself?
Ying Miaomiao took a deep breath and bravely looked up.
The rising steam from the dumplings was distorting the view, making Shi Xinyu’s expression unclear; only a blurry color block and shadow could be seen.
She suddenly gathered her courage and called out Shi Xinyu’s name: “Shi Xinyu!”
Shi Xinyu’s movement paused. She moved the dumpling aside and lovingly stroked her head, as if to comfort, or as if to express something.
Ying Miaomiao couldn’t understand. She could only see that Shi Xinyu’s amber eyes were all focused on her.
“The dumplings are delicious. If there’s a chance, will you take me to eat somewhere else?”
Ying Miaomiao’s words were interrupted, and her courage was too.
Strike while the iron is hot, or the energy will fail.
She nodded hastily, stuffed the still-warm dumpling into her mouth, and gasped for a breath of cold air from the scalding heat.
Shi Xinyu promptly offered cold water.
Ying Miaomiao recovered for a moment and finished the rest of the dumplings.
…
When they emerged from that cramped corner, the outside was already full of customers. Unfamiliar faces were shrouded in the steam of the dumplings, making them somewhat indistinct.
Ying Miaomiao paid the bill and was the first to slip into the driver’s seat. She snatched the keys from Shi Xinyu’s hand, determined to ask her question today.
Shi Xinyu humored her.
The dumpling shop was not far from the company. After only one traffic light, they could enter the underground garage.
The garage was unusually noisy today. As the barrier lifted, Ying Miaomiao suddenly remembered a message sent in the company group chat two days ago, saying that due to recent maintenance, the passage would be open during the morning rush hour.
However, it wasn’t quite the morning rush hour yet. Ying Miaomiao found an unoccupied parking spot and locked the car.
In this cramped space, the two looked at each other. Ying Miaomiao suddenly felt a little guilty and began to reflect on whether her approach was a bit childish.
But she didn’t like bottling things up.
“Shi Xinyu, I have a question I want to ask you.”
Shi Xinyu’s eyelashes trembled, and she lowered her gaze. “Is it because of what happened yesterday?”
“I miss you very much.”
“In the past two days, she and I have been constantly arguing again. Miaomiao, do you think I am at fault?”
“No.”
Ying Miaomiao was frustrated but couldn’t help but comfort her. “You are very good. Sometimes constant arguments are not your problem.”
“Then will you always love me?”
The word ‘love’ seemed to appear in Shi Xinyu’s mouth for the first time. Ying Miaomiao suddenly felt that her gaze was a little scary.
But when she looked again, her eyes were moist, and she seemed stubbornly insistent on getting an answer.
Did she love Shi Xinyu?
Ying Miaomiao suddenly couldn’t quite answer.
The word ‘love’ seemed too profound. She could definitively say ‘like,’ that it was an uncontrollable flutter of the heart, an uncontrollable attraction to Shi Xinyu.
But the word ‘love’ was something even she couldn’t clearly explain.
Did she love her?
Ying Miaomiao didn’t understand.
After a long silence, she said weakly, “Shi Xinyu, I don’t quite understand love.”
Although she knew Shi Xinyu was deliberately changing the subject, and although she didn’t know her motive, Ying Miaomiao still seriously pondered it.
The love Ms. Ying taught her was nurturing from childhood, the love between family. She loved Ms. Ying very much. Lou Jia and she had a very good relationship, caring for each other, the love between friends. She loved Lou Jia very much.
And Shi Xinyu.
She was too special, too unique, which made Ying Miaomiao completely unsure how to respond to this feeling.
The word ‘love’ was too heavy and required caution.
She counter-asked, “Do you love me?”
Shi Xinyu replied, “I do.”
“What kind of love?”
Ying Miaomiao blurted it out. Her sapphire blue eyes stared at Shi Xinyu, wanting to seek an answer.
The light in front of her suddenly became blinding.
A van in the underground garage sped towards their car in a head-on collision at an extremely high speed.
Time seemed to shatter at this moment.
The sound of metal crashing rang out, and the whole world seemed to plunge into chaos. Ying Miaomiao only had time to instinctively turn the steering wheel, shielding Shi Xinyu.
The seatbelt painfully strained her collarbone, the airbag deployed, and the faint smell of burning spread throughout the narrow underground garage.
The van was already caved in, but their car’s windshield had also shattered into several pieces, leaving a bloody scratch at the corner of Shi Xinyu’s eye.
Everything happened too fast. Ying Miaomiao only felt a buzzing in her head. The first thought that flashed through her mind was actually: Is Shi Xinyu okay?
The second was: If she dies, she hopes Shi Xinyu can take care of Ms. Ying in her old age. She probably would.
She seemed to truly be in love with Shi Xinyu.
A bloodied person stumbled out of the van, his expression crazed. “You destroyed my family, so I won’t let you have an easy time either!”
The huge commotion attracted the attention of the people nearby.
Shi Xinyu only felt waves of blood red before her eyes. She watched Ying Miaomiao disappear from the car.
Everything seemed to stretch and elongate.
Shi Xinyu couldn’t say a single word. She only silently and desperately fought off the dizziness and got out of the car.
She shouldn’t have let Ying Miaomiao come to work, shouldn’t have given her the keys, and shouldn’t have… Shi Xinyu choked up, her eyes completely bloodshot.
Ying Miaomiao had protected her very well. The timely turn of the steering wheel only caused the airbag to deploy; she had only minor injuries.
She struggled to open the deformed car door, and other than the deployed airbag, the interior was empty. A glimmer of hope suddenly ignited in Shi Xinyu’s heart.
Before fainting, Shi Xinyu stumbled outwards. This life, which Ying Miaomiao had protected, should live well.
