- Chapter 58 - Little Cat's Confusion - Ten Years Ago?!
Ying Miaomiao was shocked when she first opened her eyes. Wasn’t she just in the car? How had she ended up on the grass?
Fortunately, it wasn’t her first time transforming into a cat, so she was spared the initial panic and didn’t need to re-familiarize herself with her four limbs.
Ying Miaomiao surveyed her surroundings, familiar yet strange—wasn’t this her old hometown?
Gazing at the surrounding roads, Ying Miaomiao felt a little dizzy. She had just been in the car, right? Logically, she should have woken up in a hospital, not with such a low line of sight.
“Meow.”
She tentatively opened her mouth, and sure enough, it was a cat’s cry.
…
The sound of cicadas filled the air.
The weather in Nancheng was hot and dry. Although summer had not officially begun, you could still hear the occasional chirp of cicadas while walking along the road.
In the evening, there were few pedestrians on the street. With the start of the summer vacation, the children were restless, and the loud shouts of parents occasionally rang out during dinner time.
A clean, black-and-white tuxedo cat appeared on the street corner.
After a brief moment of confusion, Ying Miaomiao quickly recovered. Practice makes perfect. Her top priority now was to find a suitable shelter.
Ying Miaomiao was very familiar with her old home. She crossed the main streets and small alleys, gradually making her way toward the relatively bustling commercial street.
Although it was called a commercial street, it was only a comparatively busy street where a fried chicken shop, a boutique, and various clothing stores were clustered together, making it the most prosperous area in the small town.
Ying Miaomiao looked at her reflection in the transparent glass. This time, she had turned into a fully grown cat. Her size was moderate, her coat black and white, and she had a pair of sapphire blue eyes. Her white paws were neatly tucked, but those sapphire blue eyes held a trace of despair.
Seeing the old shops on the street look as new as they were in her memory, Ying Miaomiao felt a vague sense of unease.
It was only when she saw the pirated fried chicken shop, which had long since gone out of business, now packed with students lining up, that her premonition was confirmed. It was true.
She seemed to have gone back to the past.
At least three years. Because the pirated fried chicken shop in her memory had closed after the genuine fried chicken shop arrived.
Judging by the weather, it should be July now.
As for her old memories, she couldn’t immediately recall them. The only advantage now was her deep familiarity with the small town.
Ying Miaomiao sighed, reluctantly planning to turn and leave, but she sensed footsteps approaching from behind. She immediately became alert. Through the glass, Ying Miaomiao clearly saw the people behind her.
They were two children, sneaking up, holding firecrackers in their hands.
Ying Miaomiao quickly leaped away before the firecrackers dropped. The sound of the explosion was loud, clearly indicating they were not ordinary firecrackers. She thought about it and felt a surge of anger, deliberately glancing back in provocation before quickly scurrying away.
The two children didn’t want to miss the rare opportunity and chased after her. Using her knowledge of the terrain, Ying Miaomiao jumped onto a flowerbed, hiding in the dark to wait for the two children.
The vegetation in the flowerbed was not particularly lush, but it was enough to conceal a small cat. When the children stopped in front of the flowerbed, searching, Ying Miaomiao jumped out and kicked them.
Before the two children could react, Ying Miaomiao darted off, hearing two cries behind her, and she suddenly felt a secret sense of satisfaction. That’s what they get for bullying a cat.
Having vented her frustration, Ying Miaomiao’s mood improved slightly. She suddenly thought she was being childish, competing with two little kids. But such children definitely needed some education.
The summer night was muggy, and the cicadas were noisy.
The sky gradually darkened, and the square filled with people doing line dancing. Ying Miaomiao slowly arrived at the square.
Actually, her initial plan was to go home. No matter which period of herself she encountered, she could at least manage to get a decent meal. Besides, it was dinner time during the summer vacation, so if she went back, she should arrive just in time for dinner.
But the house was empty. Ying Miaomiao jumped in through the familiar skylight and searched for a long time until she saw the calendar, revealing a shocking piece of bad news.
She had returned ten years ago.
Ten years ago, she was exactly twelve years old. During that summer vacation, Ying Miaomiao had many unforgettable experiences. She and Ms. Ying had played wildly for a whole summer to celebrate her elementary school graduation and entry into middle school.
Realizing that the house would be empty for the entire summer vacation, Ying Miaomiao suddenly felt struck by a bolt from the blue.
The house as a base had to be abandoned. It was okay for sleeping, but not for finding food.
More and more people gathered in the square. Ying Miaomiao dodged many children. Although the children meant to play with her, most of them were clumsy and rough.
She sighed deeply. Although, by age, the current Ying Miaomiao would also be one of the children playing in the square, for the grown-up Ying Miaomiao, especially in her cat form, it was best to avoid such children.
No wonder there were so many people in the square today. Besides it being summer vacation, it was also a Saturday. Although there was a ten-year gap between the children now and the children ten years ago, they generally shared one thing in common: avoiding holiday tutoring.
Children released for summer vacation couldn’t completely relax; they had to attend various interest classes and tutoring classes.
Ying Miaomiao waited for two hours just to find something to eat.
She lay on a small platform near the railing. The vegetation here was lush. Although not completely hidden, a black and white cat was not easily noticeable at a glance.
Around ten o’clock at night, most of the line dancers had left, but the snack vendors hadn’t dispersed yet.
The prosperous and bustling places in the small town were few: the entrances of the junior and senior high schools, the commercial street, and the small square were the usual gathering points for snack vendors.
Using her cute face, she shamelessly managed to get two starch sausages to eat. But her appetite had been spoiled by Shi Xinyu, and she felt like two sausages weren’t even enough to fill the gap between her teeth.
But she couldn’t just fleece one vendor, so she tearfully let go of the kind aunt.
An old-fashioned phone nearby announced the time. It was exactly ten o’clock at night. A few minutes later, several students’ figures flashed in the distance. They gathered more and more.
Ying Miaomiao then remembered that although elementary and middle school students were on vacation, high school students still had tutoring and hadn’t been released yet.
Looking at these youthful high school students, she suddenly felt emotional. The uniforms of their high school alma mater were as unfashionable as ever.
Ying Miaomiao darted back to the railing area. Although high school students were much more sensible, there were too many people, so she calmed herself down.
The evening breeze was cool. While Ying Miaomiao was observing her surroundings, several school bags were unceremoniously thrown down in front of her.
Ying Miaomiao was startled. She quickly restrained herself from nearly jumping up and looked in the direction the bags were thrown from.
It was a few high school students wearing autumn jackets, a mix of boys and girls. The person leading them was carrying a speaker.
One person, in particular, caught Ying Miaomiao’s attention. She was wearing a mask and arrived by the flagpole a step behind the others. Seeing the others throw their bags, she didn’t say anything, just moved slightly to the side and slowly put down her own school bag.
Sensing Ying Miaomiao’s gaze, she turned her head keenly. Meeting a pair of shining eyes, the person was stunned, and so was Ying Miaomiao.
Ying Miaomiao felt this person was extraordinarily familiar. Both her figure and her demeanor were extremely similar to Shi Xinyu.
But without seeing her face, and with the school uniform she was wearing, Ying Miaomiao dismissed the idea. If her high school had someone like Shi Xinyu, how could she not have known?
She decided to observe from this spot first.
Four or five people clustered around the flagpole in the center of the square. The equipment was simple: only a speaker, an electric piano, and a guitar. These instruments were clearly brought from home.
Ying Miaomiao looked around for a long time and didn’t see a drum, suddenly guessing, Could it be that the drum was too big to bring?
After fiddling for a long time, the music finally started. Because they were afraid of disturbing the residents, the speaker volume wasn’t turned up high, but it still attracted a few people to watch.
Ying Miaomiao’s attention was still focused on the girl who greatly resembled Shi Xinyu. Her hair was black and straight, tied into a high ponytail for ease of movement. Her skin, like Shi Xinyu’s, was cool white, but her overall demeanor seemed colder and more melancholy, lacking Shi Xinyu’s warmth.
The girl closed her eyes, her brows slightly furrowed, her fingers constantly moving across the guitar strings.
It was only now that Ying Miaomiao realized that these four or five people seemed to have formed a small band among the students. Ying Miaomiao couldn’t quite remember the song they were practicing, but vaguely recalled it was a popular trendy song from the past decade.
The lead singer’s voice was integrated into the music, but she cracked on the high notes. Although the performance was imperfect, it was exceptionally passionate.
There weren’t many spectators, but they still contributed sparse applause when the performance ended.
During the intermission, the lead singer and another person drank soda. The girl who looked remarkably like Shi Xinyu finally walked over to her backpack and took off her mask.
The moment she saw the girl’s face, Ying Miaomiao almost uncontrollably jumped up.
It was actually Shi Xinyu! She wasn’t a graduate of this high school, so why was she wearing their uniform and in a band?!
Ying Miaomiao was too shocked, so much so that her pair of sapphire blue eyes stared at Shi Xinyu for a long time without moving.
Shi Xinyu’s hand holding the water bottle paused. She deliberately walked left a bit and right a bit until she was sure the black-and-white cat’s gaze was firmly locked on her, then she felt a bit amused and helpless.
She rummaged through her bag for a long time but didn’t find anything to eat. Shi Xinyu hesitated for a moment, then quickly went to the snack stall and bought two starch sausages. One with seasoning for herself, and one plain for the little cat.
Ying Miaomiao shamelessly accepted the feeding.
But after the intermission, she observed the sixteen-year-old Shi Xinyu more closely.
She didn’t seem talkative. When the others were laughing and playing, Shi Xinyu quietly minded her own business. Only when the rehearsal started did she become fully immersed.
The band members started singing again until the square was nearly deserted and the fluorescent lights were turned off, plunging the entire square into darkness.
The elongated shadows suddenly vanished.
“No more practice.” The lead singer suddenly said this. A crackling static sound rang out as he turned off the microphone and said again, “The lights are off, no more practice.”
The smooth music came to an abrupt halt.
Shi Xinyu silently put away her guitar.
As she picked up her school bag, she met Ying Miaomiao’s gaze again. Facing those sapphire blue eyes, Shi Xinyu softened a little but still walked away without hesitation.
The other band members were loudly discussing that they would have a half-day off tomorrow and planned to go for barbecue. Ying Miaomiao listened and suddenly became curious. What was Shi Xinyu like in high school? She didn’t seem cheerful, nor was she as reserved as she was ten years later.
She followed them from a distance until Shi Xinyu separated from the others at a crossroad. Ying Miaomiao was stunned. Why was she going back alone?
But Ying Miaomiao still quickened her pace.
On the dark, unlit road, there was no one. The rush hour after high school evening self-study had passed, and there were only a few sporadic dog barks.
Shi Xinyu’s steps became faster and faster.
She suddenly vanished at a corner.
Ying Miaomiao looked around, even jumping onto the low wall, but couldn’t find a trace of Shi Xinyu.
“Little cat?”
A familiar voice came, but it startled Ying Miaomiao, causing her foot to slip, and she tumbled off the wall.
Fortunately, Shi Xinyu was quick and caught the clumsy cat as it fell.
The cat’s fur was very clean, shiny and smooth, and it was very friendly—clearly a clumsy cat with an owner.
The warm body in her arms, its temperature transmitting through her thin t-shirt, made Shi Xinyu suddenly feel reluctant to let go.
But she still restrained herself, gently placing the cat that had briefly landed in her arms onto the wall, turning her head, and walking away.
Ying Miaomiao paused, suddenly realizing this was a rare opportunity to be close to Shi Xinyu.
She ran towards Shi Xinyu, meowing, “Meow meow!”
“Wait for me!”
Ying Miaomiao thought, Shi Xinyu is clearly carrying a backpack and a heavy guitar case, yet why does she look like she’s carrying a bundle of cotton, seeming effortlessly light?
Hearing the little cat’s meows, Shi Xinyu slowed her pace. She stopped in place, turned her head, and looked at the relentlessly pursuing cat.
