Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 31.1
When Xu Zhiyi woke up, her entire body felt uncomfortable.
She opened her eyes and looked around, noticing the snow-white ceiling and the faint scent of disinfectant lingering in the air. She must be in a hospital.
A slight stinging sensation pricked her arm. Just as she was about to turn her head to look, a pair of hands reached over, helping her sit up.
“You’re awake.”
The voice was all too familiar. Xu Zhiyi lifted her head and met Ruan Yang’s gaze.
Ruan Yang’s expression was neutral, and from her demeanor, Xu Zhiyi couldn’t tell how long she had been there.
“You’re still on an IV drip. Don’t move around,” Ruan Yang said, fetching another pillow and placing it behind Xu Zhiyi’s back for support.
Her tone was the same as before, and the familiarity of it made Xu Zhiyi pause for a moment. Glancing at her arm with the needle, she asked, “Where’s Jiang Jiang?”
Why was Ruan Yang the one with her?
Ruan Yang’s movements stiffened as she tucked in the corner of Xu Zhiyi’s blanket. She let go and stood up, her tone turning noticeably colder.
“She’s waiting outside. I’ll go call her in.”
Seeing Ruan Yang about to leave again, Xu Zhiyi grew anxious and quickly reached out to grab her wrist. “I didn’t mean that I don’t want you here. Ouch.”
Hearing Xu Zhiyi’s gasp of pain, Ruan Yang turned back and realized Xu Zhiyi had used the hand with the IV needle to grab her.
Because of Xu Zhiyi’s sudden movement, blood had flowed backward into the tube, turning a section of it red.
Ruan Yang’s expression shifted instantly. Carefully, she held Xu Zhiyi’s wrist, gently loosening her grip, and placed the hand back on the blanket.
“Don’t move,” Ruan Yang repeated.
The sudden tug had brought tears to Xu Zhiyi’s eyes, making them glisten with unshed tears. “If you don’t leave, I won’t move,” she said, her voice carrying a hint of unintentional vulnerability.
Ruan Yang stared at her for a few seconds, and in that brief moment, Xu Zhiyi noticed a flicker of emotion in her eyes.
In the end, Ruan Yang sat back down in the chair beside the bed under Xu Zhiyi’s gaze.
Ruan Yang seemed to let out a soft sigh. “I’m not leaving.”
For some reason, Xu Zhiyi’s nose tingled with emotion at those words.
It was already evening. The hospital curtains were thin, and the dim golden light of the setting sun filtered through the screen, spilling across the floor.
The serene and peaceful atmosphere seemed perfect for an apology.
Xu Zhiyi stole a glance at Ruan Yang, wrestling with her thoughts as she recalled what Jiang Jiang had told her.
Would it really work?
Her fingertips trembled slightly before she seemed to steel herself. Suddenly, she raised her other hand, the one without the IV and gently placed it against Ruan Yang’s cheek.
Ruan Yang didn’t move. Xu Zhiyi smiled, her eyes curving into a beautiful crescent shape.
She lightly pinched Ruan Yang’s right cheek with two fingers, as if coaxing a child, her voice soft and gentle. “Be good.”
“Don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”
Just then, the evening breeze drifted in, lifting the curtains high. The warm air, along with Xu Zhiyi’s hand, brushed against Ruan Yang’s face.
Like the gentlest of kisses.
There was no response for a long while.
Xu Zhiyi’s arm grew stiff from holding it up, yet Ruan Yang only continued to watch her without saying a word.
Was Jiang Jiang’s advice useless after all?
Just as Xu Zhiyi was about to withdraw her hand, Ruan Yang suddenly raised her own, her soft palm covering the back of Xu Zhiyi’s hand.
Ruan Yang’s fingertips were cool, but her voice was soft.
“I’m not angry,” she said.
“Really?”
Before Xu Zhiyi could finish asking, Ruan Yang abruptly stood up.
She pointed to the IV bag above Xu Zhiyi’s head. “The drip is almost finished. I’ll go find a nurse to remove the needle.”
She turned to leave, but as soon as she took a step, she glanced back as if she had eyes in the back of her head, staring at Xu Zhiyi’s hand, the one with the IV that looked like it was about to move again.
“Don’t move around,” she said, her tone still somewhat stiff, though noticeably softer than before.
Xu Zhiyi brightened a little, her damp eyes blinking as she looked up at Ruan Yang. In a soft, sweet voice, she replied, “Mm, I’ll be good.”
Ruan Yang’s gaze flickered again. She parted her lips as if to say something but ultimately closed them and walked out the door.
Outside, Jiang Jiang immediately stood up when she saw Ruan Yang emerge. She approached and asked, “Is Sister Zhiyi awake? What are you going to do, Assistant Ruan?”
Ruan Yang closed the door and looked at Jiang Jiang. “Yes, she’s awake. The IV is almost done. I’m going to call a nurse to remove the needle.”
Jiang Jiang breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s good, that’s good. I’ll send a message to the director right away so he doesn’t keep worrying about Sister Zhiyi.”
As she pulled out her phone, she suddenly noticed that Ruan Yang had fallen silent. Looking up, she saw Ruan Yang staring intently at her.
“Wh-what’s wrong?” Jiang Jiang paused, her fingers hovering over her phone. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Ruan Yang raised an eyebrow, recalling the anonymous text message she had received earlier that day.
She had been working with Group B in the afternoon and only learned from the assistant director around five o’clock that Xu Zhiyi had fainted from heatstroke. At that moment, all she could think of was Xu Zhiyi’s pale, paper-white face when she had handed her water at noon.
Terrified that something might have happened to Xu Zhiyi, she rushed to the nearest hospital, only to realize she had no idea which room Xu Zhiyi was in.
Given Xu Zhiyi’s status, asking the nurses was out of the question. As Ruan Yang stood bewildered in the lobby, she suddenly received a text message with the exact location of Xu Zhiyi’s room.
Without a second thought, Ruan Yang hurried to the room as directed.
Jiang Jiang had been outside at the time, stopping a group of people who had come to visit Xu Zhiyi. Ruan Yang had initially intended to ask Jiang Jiang about Xu Zhiyi’s condition, but to her surprise, Jiang Jiang didn’t stop her at all and simply let her in.
Thinking back, Ruan Yang suspected that the text message had likely come from Jiang Jiang.
She shook her head, lowered her gaze in thought for a moment, and then pressed her lips together. “Thank you,” she said.
Jiang Jiang didn’t ask why she was being thanked. Instead, she grinned and replied, “No need to be so polite, Assistant Ruan.”
Last time, when Sister Zhiyi had tricked Assistant Ruan into going to the hotel, she had used Jiang Jiang’s work WeChat account. Jiang Jiang figured that this was her way of making up for it.
Neither of them mentioned the text message, as if by unspoken agreement.
Jiang Jiang continued typing on her phone. “Well, Assistant Ruan, you should go find a nurse. I’ll stay here and keep an eye on Sister Zhiyi. See you when you get back.”
Ruan Yang followed the directions and found a nurse, then led her back toward Xu Zhiyi’s room. But just as they reached the corner before the room, a familiar figure appeared before her.
Although the person was fully masked, wearing a hat and sunglasses, Ruan Yang still recognized her, it was Qu Lingxuan, holding a fruit basket.
Qu Lingxuan must have come to visit Xu Zhiyi as well. Ruan Yang stared at the fruit basket in her hand for a moment before saying, “Zhiyi is awake. Would you like to go in together?”
“…” Qu Lingxuan tightened her grip on the fruit basket, feeling uncomfortable with the tone that sounded as if Ruan Yang were the host entertaining a guest.
Nevertheless, she maintained a polite smile and replied, “Sure, let’s go. Zhiyi must have been waiting for me for a while.”
Ruan Yang said nothing more and quietly followed the nurse.
For some reason, Jiang Jiang was not outside the door perhaps she had something to attend to.
Ruan Yang pulled out her phone and saw another message.
It was from the same number that had sent her the room number earlier in the afternoon: “Assistant Ruan, I’ve gone to grab a bite to eat. Please take care of Zhiyi for a while.”
Ruan Yang turned off her phone as the nurse pushed the door open. As soon as they entered, Xu Zhiyi’s clear voice rang out, tinged with a hint of coquettish complaint, “Why did you take so long? Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you?”
Qu Lingxuan stepped into the room ahead of Ruan Yang.
Hearing Xu Zhiyi’s words, she beamed and hurried over. “Sorry, Zhiyi. Director Wu kept me to rehearse a scene, so I’m late. Are you hungry? Would you like some fruit? I can peel some for you.”
The nurse was removing Xu Zhiyi’s IV needle. Xu Zhiyi, noticing that the voice didn’t sound quite right, looked up and realized it was Qu Lingxuan standing before her.
Meanwhile, Ruan Yang stood calmly by the door, arms crossed, quietly observing the scene.
Xu Zhiyi’s gaze lingered on Ruan Yang’s face for a few seconds before she turned to Qu Lingxuan and shook her head, her previously sweet tone completely gone.
She smiled and said, “No, thank you. I don’t have much of an appetite.”
After the nurse finished and left, Qu Lingxuan placed the fruit basket on the nearby table, still unaware of the shift in Xu Zhiyi’s demeanor.
She sat down in the chair beside the bed, glanced briefly at Ruan Yang, who had started checking her phone, and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind Xu Zhiyi’s ear.
“You really scared me and the director when you fainted from heatstroke today, you know? Omega bodies are naturally more delicate. You can’t just focus on filming all the time, you need to think about exercising too.”
Xu Zhiyi couldn’t help but keep glancing at Ruan Yang’s expression. Seeing Ruan Yang’s indifferent demeanor as she scrolled through her phone, an inexplicable irritation welled up inside her.
“I will. I’ll make time to exercise later,” she replied with a strained smile, changing the subject. “Did my fainting delay the filming schedule? I remember you have plans tomorrow, Lingxuan.”
Qu Lingxuan shook her head. “Don’t worry, just focus on resting. We’ve already shot most of my remaining scenes today. There’s just one scene left with you, which we should finish tomorrow morning. After that, I’ll wrap up. My schedule is in the afternoon, so no need to worry.”
Xu Zhiyi nodded and picked up a cup of water, taking small sips.
Tonight was Qu Lingxuan’s last chance to stay, and she wanted to say something more to Xu Zhiyi. But with Ruan Yang still standing in the room, she found it difficult to speak up.
The three of them remained in silence for several minutes until, finally, Qu Lingxuan could bear it no longer.
She tilted her head and smiled at Ruan Yang, “Assistant Ruan, I heard others call you that, so I hope you don’t mind if I do the same. I’m a bit thirsty could you go buy some water for me?”
Ruan Yang didn’t even look up, showing no intention of leaving. “There’s a vending machine at the end of the hallway. You have hands and feet, why should I go for you?”
