Chapter 30: Is He Planning to Lead the Effort to Isolate Me?
Shen Qingyu didn’t know whether he should be happy or disappointed.
To be honest, although Lu Xiao’s words were unpleasant, his temper was quite bad, and his thought process was sometimes hard for a normal person to follow, he was actually a decent guy—very generous and not petty, though often outwardly contrary to his true feelings.
With his family background, if he went abroad, he would likely never return.
No matter what, they had spent some time together. Although his departure was still a year away, the thought of that day arriving made him feel genuinely sad.
Shen Qingyu was melancholic for a while, then looked up to find Lu Xiao staring at him.
Lu Xiao had single eyelids, but his brow bone was prominent, and his facial lines were sharp. He and Song Yu were both the type of guys who looked unapproachable, but the aura they gave off was different. Song Yu’s coldness was internal, while Lu Xiao exuded an untamed wildness.
So, the moment he suddenly met Lu Xiao’s eyes, Shen Qingyu was engulfed by a sense of dread, like being seen as prey by a beast.
But Lu Xiao’s current gaze held no aggression, only a smile full of teasing amusement.
He was secretly delighted, very satisfied with Shen Qingyu’s act of sneaking a peek at him.
Didn’t this prove that Shen Qingyu was already captivated by him?
Lu Xiao stated confidently, “You keep stealing glances at me.”
The last bit of sadness in Shen Qingyu’s heart was washed away by this remark. He rolled his eyes and said, “Idiot.”
Shen Qingyu’s eyes were glistening, like a clear, tranquil lake. Lu Xiao thought he must be possessed; he even found Shen Qingyu’s eye-roll to be an adorable sign of pouting.
He remembered reading a comment somewhere that roughly said, “When you think someone is adorable, you’ve already fallen hopelessly in love with them.”
Lu Xiao was greatly shocked—had Shen Qingyu made him gay?
His eyes gradually darkened. Even so, he didn’t think of himself as homosexual. At most, Shen Qingyu was simply too alluring, and since he had no experience in romance, getting hooked was inevitable. After all, growing up, the main “love interests” around Lu Xiao were mostly male, and he had always found them disgusting, a deeply ingrained aversion that had lasted until now.
Yet, not only did he feel no discomfort when interacting with Shen Qingyu, but he also felt a slight craving for more.
Lu Xiao was highly adaptable and quickly came to terms with this fact.
What was more pressing now was to eliminate Cheng Che.
As long as Cheng Che was still around, he would never see the light of day.
As he thought this, a sense of crisis rapidly spread through Lu Xiao’s heart.
The current level of progress was not enough. Although Shen Qingyu was already attracted to him, he absolutely couldn’t drop his guard, especially since his rival was Cheng Che—the one who was skilled at playing tricks to make Shen Qingyu happy!
Lu Xiao felt his weakness was his inability to say sweet words, otherwise, with his “assets,” he could definitely coax Shen Qingyu into beaming with joy. Cheng Che wouldn’t even have a chance to interfere.
…
Because of that muddled kiss in the restroom, Shen Qingyu was avoiding Lu Xiao, and also avoiding Cheng Che.
Fortunately, Cheng Che was busy with rehearsals during this time and didn’t notice anything.
Living in the same dorm, seeing each other every day, trying to avoid them wasn’t easy.
Using the excuse of preparing for the CET-6 exam, Shen Qingyu was practically ready to pitch a tent and live in the library.
Cheng Che even felt that he was the one who had neglected and overlooked Shen Qingyu due to his busy rehearsals. So, he would usually bring back something tasty for Shen Qingyu every day, sometimes fruit yogurt, sometimes snacks or ice cream. If he came back early, he would even make a detour to the school bakery to buy mochi and cream puffs, all Shen Qingyu’s favorites.
Lu Xiao was not as thoughtful as Cheng Che in this regard; he was essentially a simple-minded, brawn-over-brains straight guy. If Shen Qingyu hadn’t refused to take his money, he would have been transferring money to him in all sorts of ways every day.
He wanted to prepare a surprise for Shen Qingyu and tried various ways to extract information from him, but his methods were too crude, the kind that an elementary school student could see through instantly.
A week before the CET-6 exam, Shen Qingyu was wrapping up his review. The air conditioning in the library was strong, and he felt cold after sitting for a while. Shen Qingyu put on his headphones and returned to the dorm to get a denim jacket, only to be blocked at the door by a just-woken-up Lu Xiao.
Startled, Shen Qingyu’s right earbud flew out, bouncing a few times on the floor before settling down for a long rest under Lu Xiao’s desk.
Shen Qingyu’s brow twitched. Just before he could explode in anger, Lu Xiao quietly got down on his knees and retrieved the earbud from under the desk.
The white earbud was covered in a ring of dust, lying dirty in his palm.
It’s a new pair of headphones, I’ll try to save them, Shen Qingyu thought.
Lu Xiao suddenly clenched his fist, put his hand behind his back, and said with a rare hint of guilt, “I’ll buy you a new pair.”
“Let me try it; if it’s not broken, cleaning it should be enough.”
“I’ll clean it for you.”
Shen Qingyu looked at him suspiciously and asked, “Can you do it?”
These four words were not very harmful, but extremely insulting.
Lu Xiao was exasperated, yet he managed a smile, “Why don’t you try me?”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
“It’s settled then, I’ll return it to you after I clean it.” Lu Xiao changed the subject, “By the way, what size shirt do you wear?”
Shen Qingyu looked at him warily. These two things had no causal relationship. If he asked suddenly, he must be about to “drop gold coins” again.
“What are you asking for? I don’t need clothes, don’t buy anything for me.”
Shen Qingyu refused so quickly that Lu Xiao hadn’t even had a chance to imagine his happy face upon receiving the gift before he was forced to face reality.
Lu Xiao: “I didn’t say I was going to buy you clothes. Are you overthinking it?”
“That’s good then.” Shen Qingyu shrugged, his peripheral vision secretly observing the fleeting look of hurt on Lu Xiao’s face.
Still pretending, he sneered inwardly.
Lu Xiao being angered away by Shen Qingyu’s few words had become the norm.
A few days later, Lu Xiao returned the earbuds to Shen Qingyu.
Shen Qingyu turned the earbuds over and over in his hand, feeling increasingly suspicious.
The model was the same, but how could they… look brand new?
An unbelievable thought flashed in his mind, and Shen Qingyu cursed under his breath.
“Damn, did this rich young master buy me a new pair?”
This was indeed something Lu Xiao would do.
Shen Qingyu saw right through it but didn’t say anything. Lu Xiao, on the other hand, was delighted, thinking he had concealed it perfectly, and strutted back and forth in front of him like a peacock.
Shen Qingyu felt annoyed, pulled the bed curtain shut, and put the sight out of his mind.
…
Two days before the CET-6 exam, Cheng Che suddenly invited Shen Qingyu for a picnic.
Shen Qingyu wanted to refuse because of that kiss he hadn’t pushed away in time.
He couldn’t put all the blame on Lu Xiao; after all, Lu Xiao was a muddled drunkard at the time.
So, when Cheng Che invited him to Moon Lake Park, Shen Qingyu hesitated for a long time.
“We’ll leave as soon as you finish your CET-6 exam. You can invite your friends, and we can stay overnight there.” Cheng Che’s plan was very sensible. “There’s a great guesthouse near Moon Lake Park; our class rented a villa there for our last class gathering.”
Shen Qingyu was tempted.
Moon Lake Park was the largest park in Wen City, with a beautiful environment and many recreational facilities.
Sensing Shen Qingyu’s interest, Cheng Che continued to entice him, “There’s also a dedicated campsite in Moon Lake Park where you can barbecue.”
At this point, Lu Xiao could no longer hold back. He tossed the earbud he was fiddling with into the drawer and interjected, “No.”
Cheng Che completely ignored him. “I also have a Fuji camera, I can take pictures for you.”
Shen Qingyu’s eyes lit up. Cheng Che really knew how to pique his interest.
Their blatant conversation annoyed Lu Xiao. Both were “the other guy,” so why did Cheng Che get to go out with Shen Qingyu alone?
“Okay! Then I’ll ask Yang Yu,” Shen Qingyu said excitedly. “We can also invite Senior [Gu Ye]!”
At the mention of Gu Ye, Cheng Che’s expression seemed off, but facing such a happy Shen Qingyu, he couldn’t bring himself to refuse. What right did he have to refuse? He was the one who suggested Shen Qingyu bring friends. If he targeted Gu Ye now, Shen Qingyu would definitely think he was petty.
Cheng Che had never thought he was the kind of person who would “swallow his pride,” but there were exceptions to everything.
His exception was Shen Qingyu.
However, just because Cheng Che couldn’t refuse didn’t mean Lu Xiao couldn’t.
Lu Xiao imperiously interrupted Shen Qingyu’s happy thought, “No. If you’re going for a picnic, you have to bring me along.”
Shen Qingyu: “?”
Cheng Che: “Why should we?”
Lu Xiao claimed righteously, “Because I am Shen Qingyu’s…” He paused, feeling that the word “the other guy” was not very elegant, and reluctantly changed it to: “…roommate. We’re all in the same dorm, and Shen Qingyu is the dorm head. Is he planning to lead the effort to isolate me?”
His words were constantly redefining Shen Qingyu’s perception—there really is such a shameless person!
And his expression was perfectly self-assured, as if going on a picnic without him meant isolating him.
—You three went out for Japanese food, and I didn’t call that isolation, how dare you say that?
Cheng Che was so angry that he spoke without thinking, saying, “Xiao Yu and I are going on a date, not a dorm gathering!”
“!!!!” Shen Qingyu’s cheeks quickly flushed with two unnatural patches of crimson.
Lu Xiao gritted his back teeth, thinking to himself, “I know you’re going on a date, that’s why it’s even more impossible to let Shen Qingyu go with you!”
“Oh, then just add me.” Lu Xiao looked at him provocatively. “The three of us can date together.”
Lu Xiao was emboldened by the fact that Cheng Che couldn’t possibly reveal his own status as “the other guy,” which is why he dared to be so brazen.
Cheng Che took a few steps forward, glaring at Lu Xiao, who was lying in the gaming chair.
Lu Xiao was equally aggressive, glaring back fiercely.
The atmosphere grew tense. As the dorm head, Shen Qingyu took on the heavy responsibility of mediating the relationship between his roommates and quietly sighed in his heart.
“Alright, alright, how about we all go? It’ll be livelier with more people.”
With Shen Qingyu’s command, neither of them dared to argue anymore and could only nod in agreement.
Since Lu Xiao would be there, inviting Senior [Gu Ye] was out of the question. Last time at the Japanese restaurant, Lu Xiao kept targeting the senior. And Yang Yu said he was going on a date with his boyfriend after the CET-4 exam.
Shen Qingyu rubbed his neck in distress. It looked like this was going to turn into another dorm gathering.
When Song Yu returned to the dorm that evening, Shen Qingyu told him about the picnic, and he surprisingly agreed very readily, even asking if he needed to prepare anything.
Shen Qingyu had prepared several different ways to persuade him, so he was taken aback by how quickly Song Yu agreed.
“There’s not much to prepare, we can just go to the supermarket together before we leave and buy some snacks.”
Song Yu pondered for a moment. “Alright.”
Shen Qingyu had words stuck in his throat but also felt he shouldn’t say them.
“Is there something you want to say?”
Shen Qingyu gave an awkward laugh and said, “Do you really want to go? You don’t have to force yourself if you don’t want to.”
Song Yu pushed up his glasses, and the light reflected off the lenses, obscuring his gaze. “Why would you think I don’t want to go?”
“I don’t know, I just felt like you weren’t too keen.”
Hearing this, Song Yu smiled helplessly and suddenly ruffled Shen Qingyu’s soft hair.
He didn’t use force, his movements were very gentle.
“You’re overthinking it. I’m not unwilling.”
As if afraid Shen Qingyu wouldn’t believe him, he added, “I’m willing.”
Very willing.
As long as it’s with you.
Song Yu’s deep gaze thoroughly scrutinized Shen Qingyu, but Shen Qingyu was still immersed in his earnest tone and completely unaware that he was about to be devoured by that look.
