Chapter 31: “Who the Hell Are You Saying Can’t Do It?”…
Among the four of them, only Shen Qingyu and Song Yu had to take the CET-6 exam.
Therefore, the preparations before the trip were left to Cheng Che and Lu Xiao.
Shen Qingyu didn’t quite trust Lu Xiao, so he gave him several specific instructions before the exam.
In the past, Lu Xiao would have been very impatient, but now things were different. He deeply understood that his current status didn’t allow him to act recklessly, so he could only listen obediently with his head lowered.
“Did you rent the car?” Shen Qingyu flipped through his memo pad, which was filled with a list of things to remember.
Lu Xiao said dismissively, “Rent what car?”
Shen Qingyu casually picked up the vocabulary book on the desk, rolled it up, and smacked him hard on the head. “Didn’t I tell you? We’re driving there.”
Seeing his bewildered look, Shen Qingyu was both annoyed and speechless. “I knew I couldn’t trust this task to you!”
All four of them in the dorm had driver’s licenses, but Shen Qingyu hadn’t driven a car since he got his license.
Fortunately, Cheng Che could drive, so the plan was initially to let Cheng Che handle the car rental. But Cheng Che was busy with rehearsals, and Shen Qingyu felt bad making him do everything. Thus, he thought of the idle Lu Xiao, who had completely forgotten about the task!
Lu Xiao rubbed his head, as if retrieving a lost memory, and said flatly, “Oh, I remember now.”
“What good is remembering now?” Shen Qingyu snapped.
“Why rent a car? I have a car.”
Shen Qingyu thought he meant his motorcycle. “Bro, there are four of us!”
Lu Xiao had never heard him call him that before and liked it. He let out a light snort and said, “I have a G-Wagon in the parking lot. Why bother renting?”
“?” Shen Qingyu blinked a few times. “That car is yours?”
Apart from riding his motorcycle once, Shen Qingyu had never been to the parking lot. But he had heard classmates say there was a really cool G-Wagon parked there, though no one knew the owner.
“Yeah.” Lu Xiao was completely unaware of how much his two sentences had shocked Shen Qingyu. Anyone else might have already started showing off proudly, but Lu Xiao just felt it was a very normal thing. “So, do we still need to rent a car?”
Shen Qingyu was dumbfounded, forcing out two dry laughs. “No, we don’t.”
“Just remember to sit in the passenger seat,” Lu Xiao raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile flashing in his eyes.
“Why?”
“Because I want to sit next to you.” With that, Lu Xiao pulled his car key out of his drawer and twirled it around his finger.
Shen Qingyu stared at the car key for a while, feeling a little envious.
“Hey, do you have a driver’s license, by the way?” Lu Xiao noticed his gaze and thrust the key towards him, letting him see it more clearly.
“…Yes.”
“Do you want to try driving?”
Shen Qingyu showed no excitement, only strong resistance. He crossed his arms in a gesture of refusal. “No way, don’t want to scratch your car.”
“What’s the big deal?” He dismissed it. “The car’s been parked at school gathering dust. I’ll drive it out for a wash first.”
He swaggered, pocketed the key, and slowly walked out.
The CET-6 exam was quickly over, and Shen Qingyu felt certain he had nailed it.
The signal was poor inside the academic building due to too many test-takers, so he didn’t send a message in the dorm group immediately. As he walked out, he saw Cheng Che and Lu Xiao standing together at the entrance, looking around for him.
Shen Qingyu stood out in the crowd. The weather was hot, and he wasn’t wearing a mask, so the two naturally spotted him right away.
Cheng Che was the first to approach, readily taking the small bag containing Shen Qingyu’s test permit. Cheng Che glanced at it and smiled. “How come your photo on the test permit looks so good?”
“Does it?” Shen Qingyu leaned in to look closely. “It’s alright, isn’t it just a normal photo?”
Shen Qingyu loved seeing Cheng Che smile. When he smiled, his puppy eyes curved into crescents, and the mole on his nose would move with his laughter.
“No way, I think it looks especially good,” Cheng Che said earnestly.
Lu Xiao mumbled “sweet talk” and then rudely squeezed in between the two of them. “Let’s go.”
Shen Qingyu grabbed his arm. “What’s the rush? I’m asking Song Yu where he is.”
The two of them didn’t take the exam in the same building. Song Yu’s test center was closer to their dorm, so he must be close to heading back to the dorm now.
Just as he was thinking of Song Yu, a message from him appeared in the group chat.
[Song Yu: I’m already at the dorm.]
Shen Qingyu shook his phone, urging the other two. “Song Yu is already at the dorm, let’s hurry up.”
He then happily walked forward a couple of steps with large movements, nearly bumping into other students. He was like a little bird that had escaped its cage and regained freedom.
Cheng Che shook his head indulgently and quickly followed.
Looking at Shen Qingyu’s cheerful back, Lu Xiao felt an itch in his throat. A light chuckle escaped his lips, and he swiftly chased after him, afraid that Cheng Che would manage to say one more word to Shen Qingyu than him.
…
Lu Xiao’s driving skills were much steadier than Shen Qingyu had imagined.
Moon Lake Park was far from Wen University. Shen Qingyu sat in the passenger seat as Lu Xiao wished, the car stereo played Shen Qingyu’s playlist, and they chatted while listening to music. In the latter half of the journey, Shen Qingyu simply fell asleep.
He was woken up by Lu Xiao calling his name.
Opening his eyes, he saw Lu Xiao’s face magnified several times, staring intently at him with an gaze that looked ready to devour him.
“Are we here?” Shen Qingyu’s voice was a little hoarse. He rubbed his eyes and looked at the scenery outside the car window. “It’s so beautiful.”
The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange and yellow. The entire Moon Lake Park was enveloped in the soft light of the setting sun, and the lush green trees punctuated this oil painting with various colors.
The car was parked in the designated parking area outside the Moon Lake Park campsite. White smoke rose gently into the air, and Shen Qingyu felt as if he could already smell the barbecue.
The group got out of the car one after another.
The park was crowded on a weekend, but luckily they had reserved a spot in advance.
Lu Xiao and Cheng Che grilled with all their might, subtly competing, trying to see who could grill better out of Shen Qingyu’s sight.
Meanwhile, Song Yu benefited, sitting next to Shen Qingyu and occasionally exchanging a few words with him.
Shen Qingyu took out his phone to take photos of the campsite and the barbecue. After a round of pictures, he suddenly remembered that their dorm didn’t seem to have a single group photo yet.
So, Shen Qingyu stretched out his arm, holding his phone high up. Cheng Che and Lu Xiao, busy grilling behind him, also entered the frame. He gently nudged Song Yu with his other arm, and as Song Yu’s gaze turned towards the lens, he quickly pressed the shutter button.
“The first group photo of 917 is born!” Shen Qingyu cheered.
Song Yu paused slightly, tilting his head to look at the photo.
In the photo, Shen Qingyu on the left was bright-eyed and pure-smiling, while Song Yu on the right had his lips slightly pressed together, his expression slightly distant beneath his glasses. The two were very close, almost head-to-head.
This was also his first photo with Shen Qingyu.
“How is it?” Shen Qingyu asked with a giggle. “Why do you look so dazed? Did I scare you?”
Song Yu gave a low “Hmm,” and asked, “Want to take another one?”
“Sure.”
Shen Qingyu raised his phone as he did before, but Song Yu gently pressed it down.
“?”
“Just the two of us.”
Shen Qingyu froze. He saw that Song Yu’s eyes were very calm, yet his tone of voice carried a subtle, hard-to-detect sense of pressure.
Song Yu stared straight at him, giving him time to think and react.
“…Okay.” Shen Qingyu numbly agreed.
This time, the dazed one in the lens was Shen Qingyu, while the corner of Song Yu’s mouth was slightly upturned, making him look quite happy.
“Remember to send it to me,” Song Yu instructed.
“…Okay.”
“What are you two talking about?” Lu Xiao’s dissatisfied voice came over, bringing Shen Qingyu back to his senses slightly.
“Nothing, is the food ready?”
“Try it.”
Cheng Che held up a skewer of grilled meat to his lips. Shen Qingyu took a bite from his hand and exclaimed, “It smells so good!”
When eating something delicious, the expression on Shen Qingyu’s face became much richer, like a lazy kitten waiting to be fed. And this kitten didn’t even need to please anyone; it just needed to lie there obediently to get lots of tasty food.
The overfed kitten rubbed its belly, enjoying the scenery of Moon Lake Park comfortably.
Cheng Che took advantage of this time to take several photos of him with his camera. The Fuji camera’s filter was beautiful, and combined with Shen Qingyu’s outstanding looks, any casual shot looked great.
For a moment, Lu Xiao’s ears were filled with Cheng Che’s various compliments and the laughter of the flattered Shen Qingyu.
He snorted disdainfully, rolling his eyes at Cheng Che, feeling sour.
Noticing Lu Xiao’s jealous gaze, Cheng Che gave him a provocative smile.
That smile again!
Lu Xiao clenched his fists tightly. It’s just a Fuji camera, what’s so great about it?
He didn’t know much about cameras, so he randomly searched online for cameras that took good pictures and ordered them all in one go. For models he couldn’t buy, he immediately messaged his friends abroad. If he couldn’t buy them domestically, he could surely buy them overseas.
We’ll see how you can show off then!
Lu Xiao was so furious his teeth were itching. He complained to Song Yu, “Look at Cheng Che, acting like a triumphant petty man.”
Song Yu twitched his lips but didn’t reply.
Because Lu Xiao currently looked very much like a scheming concubine trying to form cliques in a palace drama.
“Lu Xiao! Song Yu! Could one of you help Cheng Che and me take a picture, please?”
As soon as Shen Qingyu finished speaking, Lu Xiao instantly jumped up, afraid that Song Yu would beat him to it.
Whether it was because Lu Xiao’s photography skills were poor or because he did it on purpose, the resulting photos of Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che were simply indescribable.
Either Cheng Che’s eyes were closed, or Shen Qingyu’s were.
Not a single photo was decent!
Shen Qingyu was so angry that he pushed him away directly. “The pictures you took are awful!”
Lu Xiao was deeply hurt and tried to smooth things over. “No way, doesn’t this one look pretty good?”
He pointed to one of the photos.
Shen Qingyu did look good in that picture, but Cheng Che’s expression was very strange. Shen Qingyu couldn’t figure out how Lu Xiao managed to capture that particular moment.
“Cheng Che didn’t even pose properly in this one!” Shen Qingyu said angrily. “Are you doing this on purpose?”
“How could I be?” Lu Xiao’s eyes darted around as he denied it.
Cheng Che sneered, “Maybe his skills are just lacking.”
“Who the hell are you saying can’t do it?”
“The one who can’t do it knows it in his heart.”
The two of them were like firecrackers together; two sentences were enough to set them off. Shen Qingyu quickly pulled them apart.
Shen Qingyu was just about to ask Song Yu for help to retake the photos when a familiar female voice suddenly came from behind him.
“Shen Qingyu?”
He turned around and saw Song Anran walking with an unfamiliar girl.
“What a coincidence, Anran,” Shen Qingyu instantly changed his expression, greeting Song Anran with a beaming smile.
