- Chapter 81 - Mourning a White Bone
After traveling for a few days, the convoy was still within the boundaries of Sunset City and stopped in a small town on the outskirts.
“Sect Leader Qiu, everyone is a bit tired from the journey. How about we rest here for a day?”
Lan Shiyi came to invite Qiu Fuxue off the carriage. Since he had been in the carriage for so long and felt tired as well, he readily agreed.
Jiufang Cangze felt stifled in the carriage. “Tsk, these human carriages are so slow.”
“Then why don’t you go find two demon beasts to pull the carriage?”
Qiu Fuxue gave him a look. He turned around and was suddenly bumped by a person who came charging at him, nearly making him fall.
Jiufang Cangze’s body reacted faster than his mind. He immediately stepped forward and pulled him into his arms.
They were hugging, and they both looked at the passerby with an unfriendly gaze.
The man didn’t even turn his head. He was barefoot and covered in mud. His face was excited as he hurried away.
“Sect Leader Qiu, are you alright?” Lan Shiyi had just helped Jing An out of the carriage. When he saw that Qiu Fuxue had been bumped by a mortal, he was startled.
“I’m fine,” Qiu Fuxue shook his head, but his expression didn’t look fine at all.
He had a natural distaste for mess. The person’s mud had gotten on his sleeve.
Lan Shiyi explained, “I had people ask around. There’s a river here, and a lot of people are panning for gold, so they have a lot of mud on them.”
With that, he immediately ordered his servants to buy a new set of clothes for Qiu Fuxue.
“No need.” Qiu Fuxue declined his kindness. “I brought my own.”
The group booked rooms at an inn. Since Jiufang Cangze’s identity for this trip was Qiu Fuxue’s personal servant, Lan Shiyi, after getting permission, had them stay in the same room.
The room was, of course, a superior one. There was even a daybed in the outer room, and Jiufang Cangze’s days of sleeping on the floor were finally over.
Qiu Fuxue changed his clothes. Jiufang Cangze was still arranging the beds. After he had made both beds, he finally sighed in relief.
He looked over and saw the person he longed for standing by the window. He had changed into a jade-white robe. A light blue sash outlined his figure. The breeze moved his dark hair. Just his back alone inspired endless imagination.
Jiufang Cangze’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He walked over as if possessed.
Outside the window, a funeral procession was walking from a distance. Paper money was scattered all over the sky. Panning for gold was highly profitable but also dangerous, and it took many lives.
Life and death are determined by fate, wealth and honor by Heaven. Qiu Fuxue sighed softly. He suddenly felt someone wrap their arms around his waist from behind and rest their head on his shoulder.
He didn’t move away, nor did he fly into a rage. Instead, he placed his hand over the one on his waist.
Jiufang Cangze was flattered, but the next thing Qiu Fuxue said made him break out in a cold sweat. “Can that coffin down there fit two people?”
“Haha… don’t be ridiculous…”
“I’m not kidding.” Qiu Fuxue really felt the urge to stuff him into a coffin.
The funeral procession got closer and closer. The residents on the street scattered, not wanting to get a whiff of bad luck.
Just as the end of the procession passed by the window, a bone-white skeleton was walking leisurely at the very back.
Qiu Fuxue rubbed his eyes, thinking he was hallucinating from lack of rest. He looked again, and the skeleton was gone.
He turned to look at Jiufang Cangze, who was smiling. He had clearly seen it too.
“A-Xue, have you noticed that no matter where you go, something bad is bound to happen?”
Qiu Fuxue scoffed, his tone chilling. “Then have you noticed that wherever I go, I bring you with me?”
The implication was that all these bad things were his fault.
Jiufang Cangze rubbed his nose and got back to the point. “Ahem… the Nine Fiend Skeleton (九兇骷髏). He’s a powerful fighter, but he rarely hurts people on his own.”
“Since he’s a Nine Fiend, there’s no such thing as ‘not hurting people,'” Qiu Fuxue said mercilessly.
He was looking all over the world for these fiends. Since one had come to him, there was no reason not to take him.
Jiufang Cangze couldn’t convince him. He sighed helplessly. “I have some dealings with him. The demonic energy here is weak, and even you didn’t notice him right away. This proves that he really hasn’t hurt anyone. At most, he just messes with a few corpses.”
Skeletons like to feed on the flesh and blood of corpses, turning recently deceased people into white bones.
Qiu Fuxue understood what he meant. He wanted him to let the skeleton go.
He looked into Jiufang Cangze’s eyes and said seriously, “Don’t even think about it. It’s impossible.”
Jiufang Cangze didn’t press the matter. He sat at the table and looked at him pitifully. He had no status to speak of. Qiu Fuxue was still the one in charge here.
“Are you Nine Fiends all so strange?” Qiu Fuxue couldn’t help but ask. “One moment you’re fighting to the death, and the next you’re acting like brothers.”
“It depends on who it is.”
A waiter knocked on the door and brought in two servings of food. Jiufang Cangze hadn’t rested well in the carriage for the past few days. After he finished eating, he climbed into bed and fell soundly asleep.
He looked as if someone had deliberately prevented him from sleeping.
Qiu Fuxue leaned on the daybed to take a nap, but his mind kept replaying the feeling from earlier.
Because of his cultivation, his body temperature was always a bit lower than a normal person’s. When Jiufang Cangze had held him, he had felt truly warm.
His mind began to waver uncontrollably. He quickly chanted the Heart-Cleansing Mantra a few times to clear his head. When he opened his eyes again, it was already dark.
“Get up.”
Jiufang Cangze was sleeping soundly when he was suddenly slapped awake.
“…A-Xue?” He sat up sleepily and realized it was already dark outside. His low, hoarse voice was unconsciously a little aggrieved. “It’s already dark. Why are you hitting me if you’re not going to sleep?”
Qiu Fuxue looked at him with cold eyes. “To catch the skeleton.”
“…”
He likes to be active at night. How did a little white lotus get the habits of a rat?
He resigned himself to it and got up. When he looked up, he felt a coolness on his forehead.
Qiu Fuxue retracted his finger and cleared his throat. “Hide your demon markings. If we run into some cultivators, you’ll be accused of harboring demons.”
Jiufang Cangze got excited. He tore off the fabric on his shoulder, exposing all his demon markings. “A-Xue! I have more demon markings on me!”
“SLAP—!”
“AH—!”
In the darkness, he had a bright red handprint on his face. He followed Qiu Fuxue with a crestfallen expression.
The sword spirit floated out to find the demonic energy and lead the way. Jiufang Cangze looked at the little thing and suddenly felt that Qiu Fuxue’s arms were empty.
“A-Xue, where’s your little black ball?”
“It’s too small. It’s not suitable to bring out all the time. I left it with A-Yun (阿雲) to take care of.”
“Oh.” Jiufang Cangze pouted. He wished he hadn’t asked. Qiu Fuxue was still wearing that silver hairband every day, and the little rabbit at the end seemed to be mocking him.
Suddenly, Qiu Fuxue stopped. He reached behind his head and pulled the hairband off, replacing it with a white jade hairpin.
Jiufang Cangze was stunned for a moment. Although he was happy that A-Xue did that, it was also terrifying.
“A-Xue… how powerful are you now?”
Can he hear what I’m thinking? Or can he sense my emotions? No, neither is good.
He heard the other person say faintly, “I can beat ten of the old you without any problem.”
