- Chapter 82 - A Wild Fight in Front of a Grave at Night
Under the dark night sky, the sound of mud being stirred didn’t stop. Gold panners were working by the river, tirelessly searching for gold dust in the mud.
The sword spirit led the two to a graveyard. Across a patch of woods was the gold-panning river.
A funeral had just taken place during the day. White mourning banners hung eerily, and scattered paper money was stepped on and mixed into the dirt.
Jiufang Cangze frowned, blaming the little sword spirit for bringing them to such a place.
The little sword spirit huffed and accused him of being pretentious to Qiu Fuxue. The demon realm had far more terrifying places than this.
Qiu Fuxue didn’t get involved in their bickering. He suddenly heard a sound. He quickly covered Jiufang Cangze’s mouth and gestured for him to be quiet.
From deep within the graveyard, waves of sorrowful crying drifted over.
“Wuwu… my child… my child.”
“Wuwuwu…”
The voice sounded like a woman’s.
Qiu Fuxue and Jiufang Cangze crept closer, hiding behind a tree.
A woman in a red robe was kneeling at a grave, weeping. She stood out strikingly in the darkness.
“Wuwu… wu…”
Qiu Fuxue held his breath and observed. But the woman suddenly stopped crying, turned her head to look at their hiding place, and got up and ran.
Jiufang Cangze immediately moved to chase her, but Qiu Fuxue pulled him back.
“Don’t chase her. Look.” He walked to where the woman had been kneeling and grabbed a handful of dirt. It was mixed with a lot of gold dust.
Gold panners couldn’t find this much concentrated gold dust in a whole year. But he had seen the skeleton reflecting a golden sheen in the sunlight.
Qiu Fuxue clapped the mud off his hands. “That woman is most likely connected to your good ‘brother.'”
“…A-Xue, don’t say it like that.” Jiufang Cangze pursed his lips. His good brother? It sounded like he was an accomplice.
“Be careful!”
A red umbrella opened silently in the night sky. Qiu Fuxue’s eyes grew alert. He pushed Jiufang Cangze out of the way.
With a whoosh, a hot spark flew to their side.
Light blue robes fluttered. The red umbrella floated back to Ye Chu ‘s hand and turned into specks of red light that gathered at his heart. “We meet again, Sect Leader Qiu.”
Qiu Fuxue stood his ground, his eyes cold. “Ye Chu, have you heard the saying, ‘A person in a dragon robe doesn’t look like a crown prince’?”
Jiufang Cangze let out a laugh. “A-Xue’s insults have improved.”
Ye Chu had been the Demon Lord for so long, but he didn’t act the part at all. He wasn’t like Jiufang Cangze, who was both low-key and extravagant when he was in charge.
Ye Chu could tell that the two were insulting him. He drew his longsword, and the demon soldiers behind him became restless. “No matter what, I still look better than the beggar next to Sect Leader Qiu.”
Moreover, he wasn’t someone who liked to fight for power. Everything he did was to protect his beloved.
Jiufang Cangze turned to complain. “A-Xue, he called me a beggar.”
Qiu Fuxue gave him a silent look. At the same time, he summoned his sword, Zhengxin (正心), and a long, black gold spear. He said concisely, “Attack!”
In an instant, countless hidden demon soldiers rushed out and surrounded the two.
Now that he had a weapon he was good with, even when facing so many enemies, who were once his subordinates, Jiufang Cangze felt eager to fight.
Qiu Fuxue’s sword cut down a few demon soldiers, creating a gap in the encirclement. He flew towards Ye Chu.
“I’ll leave the rest to you!”
The long spear swung, creating a wind. Jiufang Cangze felt like he was getting the short end of the stick, especially when it came to numbers.
Ye Chu blocked a strike from Zhengxin. He leaned close to Qiu Fuxue’s ear and said maliciously, “Qiu Fuxue, you’re protecting him so much? Have you forgotten what he once did to you?”
Qiu Fuxue’s sword grazed the side of Ye Chu’s cheek. “My family matters are none of your business!”
Ye Chu sneered. “Hopeless!”
Although Jiufang Cangze was skilled, he no longer had his spiritual core. He was no match for the demons and was quickly at a disadvantage.
Qiu Fuxue was distracted by his situation and quickly sent his sword spirit to help him.
The sword spirit once again showed its potential. A black fog spread, trapping all the enemies within it.
With a series of screams, Qiu Fuxue knew that Jiufang Cangze had won.
Ye Chu dodged a strike from his sword. “I didn’t think you’d learn to play dirty, Sect Leader Qiu.”
“The same to you.”
White robes danced. Spiritual power gathered in his palm, and he sent it out, forcing Ye Chu to take half a step back.
The black fog dissipated. The demon soldiers were lying all over the ground, and the surrounding grave mounds seemed to be the perfect setting.
Qiu Fuxue landed next to Jiufang Cangze, his eyes full of contempt as he looked at Ye Chu.
Ye Chu’s lips curved into a cold smile. He waved to the remaining demon soldiers. “Retreat!”
After a not-so-easy fight, Qiu Fuxue watched them flee. He suddenly heard a clang and felt a weight on his shoulder.
Jiufang Cangze leaned on his shoulder, his voice weak. “A-Xue, I’m hurt…”
He held out his arm. It had a few scrapes. It was barely even a minor injury.
Qiu Fuxue put a pill in his mouth. “Did Ye Chu also sense the demonic energy and come over?”
Jiufang Cangze swallowed the pill and rubbed against his neck. “Unlikely. The demonic energy here is too weak. He probably has been following us for a while.”
As soon as he said that, the two looked at each other.
“Oh no!”
Jiufang Cangze suddenly regained his strength. He and Qiu Fuxue rushed to the inn.
They kicked open Lan Shiyi’s door. The room was empty. Just then, they heard Jing An scream from the room next door.
Qiu Fuxue broke down the door with his sword. Jing An was tearfully huddled in a corner. All the guards Lan Shiyi had brought had been taken care of. He himself was badly wounded and was fighting a few men in black.
Zhengxin’s blade must be stained with blood when drawn. Qiu Fuxue took care of the men in black and quickly told Jiufang Cangze to find a doctor.
But by the time the doctor arrived, Lan Shiyi had already passed out from his serious injuries.
After a long night, Jing An sat by Lan Shiyi’s bed, her face still streaked with tears.
Qiu Fuxue hesitated before comforting her. “Princess, you don’t have to worry. He is only temporarily unconscious. The doctor said he will wake up soon.”
Jing An clutched the corner of the blanket, her eyelashes lowered. She was lost in thought. She suddenly asked, “Sect Leader Qiu, would you love someone who is much older than you?”
Qiu Fuxue froze at her words. He subconsciously looked at Jiufang Cangze.
The latter thought he was being judged for his age. He grumbled under his breath, “The Primordial God is even older than me!”
“…Yes, I would.” Qiu Fuxue answered Jing An’s question, but his eyes didn’t leave Jiufang Cangze.
Jiufang Cangze covered his pounding heart. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
Jing An sniffled and wiped away her tears. “I guess… you cultivators live long. You’re different from us mortals.”
“I don’t want my husband to be powerful. I just want him to be kind to me… But he’s always so cold to me. He has no feelings at all. He just sees me as a tool to consolidate the Lan family’s power…”
