- Chapter 38 - Never Seen Someone This Difficult
Gu Huai had long since pushed the matter of the Gu family to the back of his mind. He planned to head back up the mountain before it got dark.
He hadn’t been in the car for more than a few minutes when he heard a sudden boom.
The driver glanced into the rearview mirror, looking puzzled. He tried to restart the engine, but when there was no response, he got out to inspect the vehicle.
Gu Huai was looking at his phone when the driver walked to the back and tapped on the window. “Young man, I’m afraid we’re stuck. The car broke down.”
Gu Huai got out to check the situation. It was already past seven o’clock. The driver was on the phone, looking stressed, and spoke to Gu Huai apologetically. “Kid, this area is too remote. I can’t get a mechanic out here anytime soon.”
“Why don’t you see if there’s a farmhouse or an inn nearby where you can stay for the night? We can head up tomorrow once the car is fixed.”
Gu Huai called the director to explain the situation. The director also felt that traveling up the mountain in the middle of the night was unsafe, so he simply gave Gu Huai a half-day leave.
After crouching by the roadside for about half an hour, Gu Huai caught sight of someone out of the corner of his eye who looked like they were coming to fix the car. He stood up excitedly and waved enthusiastically.
The newcomer was carrying a toolbox and holding a wrench clearly in his hand. Gu Huai was just about to turn and tell the driver.
Before he could take two steps, something struck him violently on the back of the head.
Gu Huai’s vision blurred instantly. The next thing he knew, there was the thud of his body hitting the ground and a flash of crimson before his eyes. His eyelids lost the strength to stay open, and he lost consciousness completely.
Gu Huai didn’t know how long he had been out. When he finally woke up, his vision was a complete smear. He reached out to block the light, which appeared as a piercing, stabbing red.
He couldn’t see clearly. The throbbing pain at the back of his skull was impossible to ignore.
I was attacked, Gu Huai thought groggily. Where am I now?
He felt something sticky on his head and vaguely remembered bleeding a lot. He wasn’t sure if the blow from the wrench had hit a nerve, but for the time being, he couldn’t make out his surroundings.
Before he could move, he heard footsteps. He immediately froze, pretending to still be unconscious.
“Hey, Boss, we didn’t kill him, did we? It’s been three days and he still hasn’t woken up.”
Gu Huai heard a voice—presumably the “Boss”—that sounded slightly shrill. “He won’t die. I already bandaged him.”
“Won’t the wound get infected, Boss?”
Hearing this, Gu Huai’s heart hammered against his ribs. Three days? I’ve been out for three days?
Would Sister Chen and the crew be worried about him? And Brother Bo… did he know Gu Huai had been missing for three days?
Before he could think further, the Boss spoke toward him. “He seems to be awake.”
“Go check.”
Several lackeys instantly surrounded him. Gu Huai didn’t know what they intended to do and didn’t dare breathe. The men inspected him thoroughly before standing back up as if nothing were wrong.
Gu Huai thought he had fooled them and was just about to let out a sigh of relief.
“If you’re awake, why not say hello to the brothers? Young Master Gu truly lives up to his reputation.”
The Boss had leaned in close at some point, his tone sounding sinister. Gu Huai shuddered involuntarily, his hair standing on end. His throat was so parched from lack of water that the voice he produced was a rasp that startled even himself.
“What do you want?”
He forced himself to stay calm. He was a living person, a public figure; if he had been missing for three days, someone was definitely looking for him.
The man called Boss pinched Gu Huai’s chin with a calloused hand, his tone disturbingly intimate. “Don’t be afraid, Young Master Gu. We only grabbed you because you’re useful.”
The pain in the back of his head made it hard to think, but Gu Huai remained steady, trying to keep his voice level. “Whatever you want, we can negotiate.”
The Boss lightly stroked his face. “Stop trying to fish for info. Look at how pale this little face is; it really breaks my heart.”
Gu Huai was thoroughly revolted. He couldn’t see the man’s face at all, only a dark shadow moving in front of him.
“Young Master Gu should thank his lucky stars for his special status. Otherwise, falling into our hands, you wouldn’t be lying here so ‘clean.'”
Gu Huai frowned. Before he could process the implication, the Boss spoke again. “You really are a popular one. People outside are going crazy looking for you.”
“Tell me, should the brothers let you go or not?”
Gu Huai was starting to get used to the blurred vision. He mentally went through a list of people he might have offended recently. His voice remained flat. “Did Xie Yun send you?”
This was the only motive Gu Huai could think of. Gu Chong wouldn’t dare pull a stunt like this; he still had to answer to the Ye family.
The Boss stiffened for a fraction of a second before quickly regaining his composure. “Just stay put. Once we get what we want in a while, we’ll naturally let you go.”
“But if you don’t behave, I can’t guarantee what my brothers here might do to you.” He paused. “Especially since you have such a pretty face.”
Gu Huai keenly noticed that brief hesitation. He knew he was right. Xie Yun is quite something. Illegal imprisonment, is it?
He sneered inwardly. He had been far too polite to them.
Perhaps because of his status, the men didn’t dare lay a hand on him. They even brought him some food. Gu Huai could only vaguely see the colors of what was placed before him.
He furrowed his brow. “I don’t eat these vegetables. I want meat, but only lean cuts. And I don’t eat anything that needs to be peeled or shelled.”
The lackey patrolling the room nearly tripped. “Young Master Gu, do you really think this is your own home?”
Gu Huai lay there lazily. He was basically half-blind right now; rather than fighting these people head-on, it was better to wait for rescue. For the moment, neither side could do much to the other.
His phone, watch, and everything else had been confiscated. Gu Huai waved a hand in front of his eyes; it was still a blur. He closed his eyes. Over the past few days, he had started to adapt to this sightless world.
I hope Brother Bo doesn’t know about this, he thought. He didn’t want Bo Jianyan to worry about him while he was so busy with work.
Gu Huai lowered his eyes, his expression unreadable but tinged with a hidden loneliness.
The lackey guarding him saw this and couldn’t help but ask what was wrong.
Gu Huai looked toward him. “I want to take a shower.”
Over the last few days, the men had gotten a deeper understanding of the Eldest Young Master Gu’s temperament. They had never seen someone this difficult. If it weren’t for the fact that they hadn’t received orders from above, they would have sent this “Buddha” away long ago.
