- Chapter 37 - That Little Lunatic Gu Huai
Gu Yi’s voice trembled slightly as he picked up the list. “Dad, is everything Gu Huai said true?”
Gu Chong had a splitting headache. Seeing his disappointing son standing there, he felt a surge of unprovoked rage. “Go call your mother over here.”
Gu Yi didn’t even dare to breathe loudly. He noticed several plots of land on that list that were currently being used by his mother’s side of the family. He had always assumed they belonged to the Gu family and that his father had simply granted the usage rights because he doted on his mother.
Now, he was suddenly being told that all of it belonged to Gu Huai. These were mementos left by Gu Huai’s late mother, and they had simply claimed them as their own.
Gu Yi lowered his eyes, feeling a twinge of guilt. On his way to find his mother, just as he was about to knock on her door, his hand paused. After a moment of hesitation, he pulled out his phone, found Gu Huai’s number, and sent a text:
[I’ll return the items to you as soon as possible. I didn’t know. Sorry.]
After leaving the Gu residence, Gu Huai heard his phone chime. Thinking it was a message from Bo Jianyan, he opened it only to see a text from an unknown number. Based on the words, he knew exactly who it was.
Gu Huai couldn’t be bothered to reply. It would be best if Gu Yi actually did as he said; Gu Huai had zero patience to help Gu Chong raise his son.
Immediately after, another message from Gu Yi arrived:
[Gu Huai, accept my WeChat friend request. If anything is damaged, I’ll compensate you for it one by one.]
Gu Huai stared at the text for a moment before logging into WeChat to accept the request. Their relationship had never been good, and Gu Huai was the type of person who meant what he said. When he broke things off with the Gu family, he had blocked and deleted everyone without a second thought.
Gu Yi’s message came through instantly:
[Don’t delete me again.]
Gu Huai remained indifferent and didn’t reply.
Back at the Gu house, Gu Yi had just finished explaining the situation to his mother.
The elegant woman, who had been in the middle of doing her makeup, stiffened instantly. Her voice betrayed a hint of panic. Upon hearing that Gu Yi had already returned the jade buckle to Gu Huai, she raised her hand and landed a sharp slap across his face.
“How did I raise such a useless waste?” she hissed. “If Gu Huai wants something, you actually just give it back to him?”
Gu Yi felt a stinging heat on his cheek but didn’t dare utter a sound.
The noblewoman stood up, her red-bottomed heels clicking on the floor. After her outburst, she seemed to regain her composure. “Let’s go. Let’s see what your father has to say about this.”
Gu Yi didn’t dare speak further and followed silently behind her.
Gu Yi’s mother, Xie Yun, was a woman of status. She had been pampered since childhood, and combined with Gu Chong’s indulgence, she had developed an arrogant and domineering personality. If it weren’t for the fact that the Ye family’s background was even more formidable, Gu Huai wouldn’t have been able to stay in the Gu household until he was eighteen.
Gu Yi stood to the side, listening to the conversation between Gu Chong and his mother. Within moments, Xie Yun became impatient.
“What do you mean ‘return them’? That brat Gu Huai grew up in the Gu house; shouldn’t he pay for the cost of staying here?”
“Furthermore, I only gave those lands to my brothers and sisters with your permission. If you take them back now, how am I supposed to face my family?” she argued, her eyes welling up with aggrieved tears.
Gu Chong could never stand to see her cry, but today his attitude was firmer than usual. “Xiao Yun, listen to me. This time, I truly didn’t consider things thoroughly.”
“See if you can get them back from your brothers. I’ll find other plots of land to compensate them with.”
Xie Yun remained unhappy, her tone laced with irritation. “Gu Chong, are you tired of me? You never used to speak to me like this.” She pulled Gu Yi toward her. “Your son is right here, yet you’re taking Gu Huai’s side.”
Gu Chong was already frustrated because of Gu Huai. Hearing her irrational words, the irritation in his eyes became impossible to hide. “Xiao Yun, you know those things were left by Gu Huai’s mother. Gu Huai just gave me a deadline, and you know as well as I do that he’s a lunatic.”
Xie Yun’s expression soured. “Just because his mother is dead, you make me compromise every time something involves him? What is that supposed to mean, Gu Chong?”
“It was the same with the wedding last time. Gu Huai made such a mess, and do you know how much my reputation in our circle suffered because of it? I don’t know how many people have cursed me behind my back for being with you!”
“I have a reputation to uphold, too. Don’t even think about it today. I, Xie Yun, will not be humiliated like this again.”
“Let that lunatic Gu Huai sue me! If he has the guts, let him come and kill me! This is not up for discussion.”
Gu Chong’s face turned an ashen shade of gray at her words. “Xiao Yun, don’t say that. Am I not trying to find a way to fix this?”
Accustomed to being spoiled, Xie Yun ignored him completely. “Gu Chong, I’ve been with you since I was twenty-two. What did you promise me back then?”
Gu Chong was truly at his wits’ end. He could only comfort her softly, “Xiao Yun, don’t get involved in this. I know how to handle it.”
Xie Yun’s expression didn’t soften. She had no intention of giving Gu Chong an out. “Or tell me, did Gu Huai find out about those things you’ve been doing behind the scenes? How old is that little brat? If he dares to walk all over you today, he’ll be the death of us mother and son later!”
“Gu Chong, say something! Do you even care about me?”
Gu Yi listened to his mother, his brow furrowed. Things behind the scenes? What didn’t he know?
For the first time, Gu Chong found her tantrums unbearable, but he couldn’t bring himself to snap at her. He signaled Gu Yi with his eyes to calm her down.
Gu Yi stepped forward and patted his mother’s shoulder. “Mom, those things belong to Gu Huai. It’s not right for us to keep them. If word gets out, it won’t look good for our reputation.”
He continued hesitatingly, “Also, Mom, I think if we don’t return them, Gu Huai might actually come back and smash every vase in this house.”
Xie Yun’s lip twitched. Gu Huai was indeed capable of doing such a thing.
She gradually calmed down but still refused to fully yield. “Fine. I’ll return the valuables to him, but you figure out what to do about the land and real estate yourself.”
“And you’d better buy me new ones to replace everything I’m giving back.”
Gu Chong closed his eyes, feeling a massive headache coming on. Knowing Xie Yun, this was the biggest concession she was willing to make.
