- Chapter 39 - Just Like Before
The men reported the situation to their boss. Knowing that Gu Huai’s temperament was troublesome enough, the boss ordered them to take him to the bathroom immediately and even thoughtfully found him a change of clothes.
“Young Master Gu, don’t trip and fall in there since you’re blind.”
Hearing this, Gu Huai’s lip couldn’t help but twitch. Thanks for the concern.
He had been held there for nearly five days now, still without any opportunity to communicate with the outside world. Although it was illegal imprisonment, they hadn’t made things too difficult for him—likely out of respect for his status. Knowing he was effectively blind, the men didn’t bother him much.
If it weren’t for the fact that he was cut off from the world, Gu Huai would have felt like he was on vacation, with people waiting on his every need. After chatting with the guards for a few days, their relationship had warmed up, though they remained tight-lipped the moment he brought up anything related to their “work.”
Gu Huai felt the clothes on his body; they weren’t his, but these people had at least shown some conscience by replacing his blood-stained outfit. He fumbled with the shower controls, adjusted the temperature, and finally had a refreshing wash.
Gu Huai felt he might truly be going blind; he could only make out the vague outlines of objects. He fumbled around until he managed to get his clothes on—he didn’t know if he’d dressed correctly, but he couldn’t bring himself to care.
As he fumbled his way out, the Boss suddenly appeared again. Gu Huai barely recognized him by his silhouette. His emotions remained flat; since waking up that first day, he hadn’t seen much of the leader.
Gu Huai didn’t care to ask questions. It wasn’t like he hadn’t been locked up before, so he was content to enjoy the peace.
Seeing Gu Huai like this, the Boss chuckled. “It seems Young Master Gu is quite used to being here.”
Gu Huai narrowed his eyes, vaguely seeing the ferocious tattoos on the man’s arm. “If I weren’t used to it, it’s not like you’d let me go.”
Stunned by the remark, the Boss remained silent for a long time. Gu Huai had a poor impression of him and didn’t bother hiding his disdain. Sensing his reluctance, the Boss deliberately pinched Gu Huai’s chin, forcing him to look up, and issued a dangerous warning: “Young Master Gu, don’t think for a second that I don’t dare do anything to you.”
Gu Huai was always one to respond to kindness rather than threats. He dismissed the warning. “What? Are you going to hit me?”
The Boss grabbed his collar, pulling him closer. “Be a good boy, Young Master Gu. I wouldn’t have the heart to hit such a pretty face. Instead of hitting you, I’d much rather watch you beg me for mercy.”
Even someone as thick-skinned as Gu Huai knew exactly what he was implying. Truly disgusting.
Gu Huai frowned, feeling as if the collar the man had touched was now tainted with a foul stench. Seeing Gu Huai’s face turn pale, the Boss finally let go, satisfied. “Don’t refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit. You’re quite popular, Young Master Gu, I’m almost reluctant to let you leave when the time comes.”
Gu Huai cursed at him. The Boss seemed to enjoy the provocation; the more Gu Huai showed his disgust, the more excited the man became. “Anyway, Young Master Gu is injured and can’t see. I’ve never tried a man before, but I think you’d be quite a good choice.”
He reached out to stroke Gu Huai’s face. A chill ran through Gu Huai’s heart. He could accept being beaten or bruised, but hearing those words made him feel physically sick.
His voice, cold and sharp, betrayed his true mood: “You wouldn’t dare.”
The Boss’s tone was casual. “What wouldn’t I dare? Have you forgotten you’re currently my prisoner?”
Gu Huai stopped talking. He didn’t want to waste another breath on such a person. He missed Brother Bo intensely. If only Bo Jianyan were here. Realizing how much he was thinking of him, Gu Huai wondered if he had become too weak and overly dependent lately.
He lowered his eyes, his vision still a blur. Damn it all. Blind to this degree, he wouldn’t even be able to tell who was rescuing him if someone showed up.
Gu Huai didn’t know when he fell asleep, but when he woke up, he had been moved.
His surroundings were pitch black; not a single ray of light filtered through. Panic flared in his chest. He squinted, trying to see anything, but in the small, lightless space, his breathing became increasingly labored.
He fumbled along the wall and slumped down, trying to calm himself, but his heart raced uncontrollably. Cold sweat soaked his back. He had been locked in places like this before.
He leaned against the wall, trying again to settle his nerves, but the more he tried, the more those terrible memories resurfaced. In a moment of breakdown, he slammed his fist into the wall. The sharp sting of pain in his knuckles finally brought a shred of rationality back to him.
Gu Huai took some time to adjust. The space was narrow and claustrophobic. He fumbled around uncomfortably until he felt what seemed like a door and hammered on it violently. There was no response. He didn’t give up, kicking it several times, but there was still no sound from the outside.
He slid back down against the wall. He couldn’t stay calm; every second in this airless place felt like suffocation. It felt exactly like the windowless dark room back at the Gu residence.
Gu Huai let out a self-deprecating laugh. Of course, the thing I fear most is exactly what happens. The previous days of imprisonment had been nothing compared to this; at least there had been light and people nearby. But here, there wasn’t a sound.
Gu Huai closed his eyes, his composure shattering. He felt his eyes grow moist and cursed himself for being so pathetic. It’s just a dark room. What is there to cry about?
Yet, after all these years, the fear and helplessness from being locked away as a child hadn’t faded; instead, it made the current situation even harder to bear. Trapped in the enclosure, Gu Huai buried his head in his knees.
Brother Bo, can you come save me? I miss you so much.
He missed the warmth and the reliability of the man. He didn’t want to be sitting here like a failure in a dark corner, waiting for someone to come.
It was so cold, just like before. Unable to see anything, Gu Huai felt utterly useless. He curled up into a ball.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed. Gu Huai fumbled quickly to stand up. He saw a faint sliver of light bleeding through the door. Unable to hide his excitement, he pounded on the door. “Hey! Is someone there?”
