- Chapter 35 - Father, Are You Feeling Guilty?
Gu Huai was still on set when he received a message from Ye Yunsui.
“Xiao Huai, my mom told me that back when your mother married into the Gu family, she brought a massive dowry with her. She says you should take back whatever you can; don’t leave it to benefit Gu Yi and his lot.”
Gu Huai actually wasn’t very clear on the details. His mother had passed away early, and at the time, he was at an age where he only half-understood things. Once he became an adult, he never asked Gu Chong for a single penny. As for the things his mother left behind, he knew very little.
Seeing his reaction, Ye Yunsui understood Gu Huai’s temperament; he had surely left the house with nothing after his falling out with Gu Chong.
“Fine then. Just wait until my mom lists everything out. If we can get it back, we’ll get it back.”
Gu Huai suddenly remembered that when he was a child, his mother had given him a “Safety Buckle” (a jade pendant). However, he had been too small then and complained it was too heavy, always trying to take it off. Thinking back, his mother had probably put it away, saying she’d return it when he grew up.
He lowered his eyes, and memories of his time with his mother flooded back.
It had been several months since he last visited her. Gu Huai decided to find time for another trip to the cemetery. Time had passed, and his mindset was now vastly different than before.
Thinking of Bo Jianyan, a surge of warmth filled his heart.
Mom, I’m very happy now. Can you see?
He remembered playing in the garden with his mother as a child and seeing a couple kissing. At the time, his mother told him that only people who like each other kiss. At three or four years old, he had asked innocently, “Then Xiao Huai likes Mom very much. Does Mom like Xiao Huai?”
His mother would always stroke his head gently. “Of course I like our Xiao Huai.”
“When our Xiao Huai grows up and meets someone he likes, he can kiss them like that too.”
“I really look forward to seeing who you’ll choose. Just don’t be like Mom and choose someone who doesn’t love you.”
Back then, he had listened with a hazy understanding, only remembering a few phrases. He never expected those words would follow him through the rest of his life.
He knew clearly that since his birth, Gu Chong had hardly acknowledged him or his mother. If kissing meant mutual affection, then the way his mother used to daze off while staring at photos of herself and Gu Chong must have been a form of “liking” too.
His mother loved his father very much, but his father didn’t seem to like them at all.
Gu Huai sighed, touching the small ID photo tucked behind his phone case. “Mom, I’ll make Gu Chong pay the price he deserves.”
He checked the filming schedule for the afternoon. The production was about one-third of the way through. The protagonist’s background story had been established, and the remaining two-thirds focused on the road to revenge and the love-hate entanglements with close friends.
Seeing that he had no scenes that afternoon, Gu Huai planned to ask the director for leave. He wanted to return to the Gu residence to properly audit the inventory list Ye Yunsui had sent him.
He frowned as he looked over the list; there were quite a few real estate properties included. Gu Chong had never mentioned a word of this to him. He hadn’t realized his mother had left him so much.
Ye Yunsui’s mother sent a long voice message: “Many of these things were prepared by your mother back then. She used to always tell me she wanted to prepare a perfect birthday gift for you every single year.”
“She also said she wanted to watch you get married…”
Perhaps reaching a painful memory, the woman’s voice over the phone became choked with emotion. “Such a bright and cheerful person… how could she leave so suddenly?”
Gu Huai couldn’t listen any longer. His eyes stung as he tilted his head back. “Auntie, don’t overthink it. I will uncover the truth. I won’t let Gu Chong or any of those people off easy.”
Gu Huai successfully got leave from the director. Because Gu Huai’s performance was nearly flawless, the director almost always granted his occasional requests, though he didn’t forget to tell Gu Huai to come back early.
Since they were filming on a mountain, returning late at night even for a Beta like Gu Huai required caution.
Gu Huai replied to the director with a smile. He then headed down the mountain, hailed a taxi, and went straight to the Gu residence.
He checked the time, wondering if anyone else was home. He had no desire to deal with Gu Yi, but today it seemed unavoidable.
When he arrived, the security guard at the gate showed a flicker of surprise followed by immediate panic. Gu Huai didn’t even give him a second glance. Despite being a Beta, the guard felt a chilling pressure from Gu Huai’s presence and instinctively stepped aside.
“Eldest Young Master, you’ve… you’ve come back.”
Gu Huai’s lips curled into a cold smirk. “Yes, I’m back. Haven’t you reported it to them yet?”
Without waiting for a reaction, he walked straight inside.
“Eldest Young Master, wait!”
Gu Huai looked back, his tone sharp and uncompromising. “What? I need to report to someone just to come back to my own home?”
The guard didn’t dare stop him further. Although Gu Huai had been estranged from the family for a long time, as long as his surname was Gu and their blood ran through his veins, an outsider had no right to say a word.
The guard, who had worked there for years and knew the family scandals, sighed. “I only wanted to tell you that the Master and Madam are both inside.”
Gu Huai gave a curt nod and entered. Showing no sentimentality, he asked a maid where Gu Chong was. Once he had the answer, he kicked open the door to Gu Chong’s study without hesitation.
Inside, Gu Chong was flipping through documents. He was startled by the sudden intrusion, causing his gold-rimmed glasses to fall from the desk to the floor. He looked up, and upon seeing it was Gu Huai, he regained some composure.
His tone was cold, as if speaking to a stranger. “Don’t you know how to knock?”
Gu Huai dragged a chair across the floor, the legs screeching harshly against the wood.
Gu Chong’s brow furrowed, the wrinkles on his face looking somewhat predatory. “Gu Huai. What are you doing now?”
Gu Huai sat across from the desk, resting his chin on his hand. His voice sounded casual. “Just catching up with my dear father, of course.” He intentionally emphasized the word “father.”
“How insolent!”
“I haven’t even said anything yet. Father, don’t be so quick to get angry. There will be plenty more to upset you in a moment.”
Gu Chong gritted his teeth at the attitude. “You bastard, get out of here right now!”
Gu Huai looked up at him, his eyes clouded with a dark intensity. “Are you that afraid of me? Are you feeling guilty looking at my face, Father?”
