- Chapter 34 - My Partner is a Beta
Bo Jianyan felt an inexplicable, restless heat surging through his body.
He recalled the abnormal pheromone fluctuations he’d experienced at Gu Huai’s place a few days ago. Remembering that Song Chengchi’s “White Moonlight” the old flame who had recently returned to the country was a doctor specializing in pheromones, he sent Song Chengchi a message:
[I recall your White Moonlight works in Hangzhou. Help me book an appointment with them. My pheromones have been acting up lately.]
Song Chengchi joked back:
[What? Rut coming on? Do you need to ask your big brother for leave to go home to your wife?]
Bo Jianyan couldn’t be bothered with him:
[Hurry up.]
He wanted to go home to his wife, too, but his ruts were different from a typical Alpha’s. Every time one hit, it lasted longer than usual and was prone to violent outbursts. If he actually went to see Gu Huai, he would almost certainly end up hurting him.
Song Chengchi scheduled the appointment for after work hours. As soon as Bo Jianyan clocked out, he headed straight to the hospital.
After a long ordeal of blood draws and various routine tests, Bo Jianyan sat staring at the medical report. His brow was knitted tightly as he pointed to the pheromone data and asked Song Chengchi’s friend, “What does this mean?”
80% risk of violent outburst. Pheromone fluctuation levels reaching 90.
It was even more severe than before.
The doctor glanced at him. “CEO Bo, given your condition, I strongly recommend finding a partner to help harmonize your pheromones.”
Bo Jianyan pursed his lips. “My partner is a Beta.”
A Beta? Doesn’t that mean they can’t be marked? The doctor was slightly surprised. A family as prominent as the Bo family actually allowed Bo Jianyan to be with a Beta?
The doctor sized him up. “A Beta? That is indeed… inconvenient for your condition. As you can see, your pheromone spikes are larger than before. Based on the data, CEO Bo, this upcoming rut might be more fierce and harder to endure than any you’ve had.”
An Alpha in heat is terrifying; their actions and the raw leakage of pheromones can easily make others feel physically ill.
Bo Jianyan remained unfazed. “Just prescribe me extra suppressants.”
The doctor looked at him deeply. “Actually, CEO Bo, a Beta isn’t impossible, but it’s highly likely you will hurt your partner.”
Without a second thought, Bo Jianyan cut him off. “Just write the prescription. No need for more words; I know what I’m doing.”
He would rather inject himself with multiple suppressants than risk harming Gu Huai.
As the doctor wrote the order, he couldn’t help but feel a bit sentimental. It was hard to imagine a man as controlling as Bo Jianyan choosing a Beta—someone who couldn’t provide immediate pheromonal comfort or offer much help during a rut. It was clear Bo Jianyan loved this Beta very much.
The doctor was curious what kind of person could make the famous CEO Bo act this way. He shook his head and handed over the prescription. “CEO Bo, I still suggest you think about your own health.”
Having said his piece, the doctor didn’t waste more breath. As soon as Bo Jianyan left, he started typing a message to Song Chengchi to dig for info on this mysterious Beta.
Bo Jianyan gripped the report, looking at the estimated window for his rut. It really knew how to pick a time—right during his few days off.
The time he could spend with Gu Huai was shrinking again. At the thought, the pheromones in his body surged with agitation. Damn it all, I really want to just stay with Gu Huai all day.
Song Chengchi messaged him immediately after hearing from the doctor:
[Bo Dog, are you really not considering going back to Gu Huai to “solve” this?]
He knew Bo Jianyan took his feelings seriously. In the past, whenever a rut hit, Bo Jianyan would take sick leave and rot at home on suppressants. If Gu Huai hadn’t suddenly appeared, Song Chengchi would have bet this dog of a man would stay single forever.
Bo Jianyan rubbed his temples:
[No.]
Song Chengchi:
[I won’t call you Bo Dog anymore. With the rut imminent, Brother Bo is a real man.]
Bo Jianyan managed a small smile:
[Thanks for the vote of confidence. I’ll do my best.]
Bo Jianyan sent a message to Gu Huai:
[Baby, have you been skipping meals again?]
Gu Huai felt a wave of guilt. How did Brother Bo know? He’d been busy and forgotten again, but once this stretch was over, he planned to see Brother Shen to get some dirt on Gu Chong.
He was too afraid to reply, but Bo Jianyan seemed to have a sixth sense; the next second, a video call came through.
[Pick up.]
Gu Huai obeyed, answering the call and pretending everything was normal. Noticing Bo Jianyan was in a car, he checked the time. “Brother Bo, did you just get off work?”
Bo Jianyan calmly tucked the medical report away. “Yeah. I need our Xiao Huai to give me a few words of praise.”
Gu Huai humored him, saying a few sweet things that cheered Bo Jianyan up, making him temporarily forget the headache of the exam results.
Just then, the driver spoke up. “Boss, we’re almost at the pharmacy.”
Gu Huai immediately chimed in. “Brother Bo, are you sick again?”
Bo Jianyan signaled the driver to be quiet. “No,” he told Gu Huai. “I ran out of vitamins at home. I’m just stopping by the pharmacy on the way back to pick some up.”
Gu Huai studied his face. He didn’t look ill, so he relaxed. “Alright then. Brother Bo, do you have to work this late every day?”
Bo Jianyan nodded. Heartaching for him, Gu Huai didn’t want to keep him talking. He was also worried Bo Jianyan would grill him about his meals again, so he hurriedly said goodbye and hung up.
As soon as the call ended, Bo Jianyan received a transfer from Gu Huai, a substantial amount.
He sent back a question mark. Strange. Where did Gu Huai get the idea that I’m broke? Is he addicted to sending me money? But he didn’t want to make Gu Huai feel awkward, so he accepted it. For a moment, he completely forgot that according to their signed contract, he was supposed to be the one paying Gu Huai monthly.
Gu Huai, on the other hand, was quite happy:
[Brother Bo, I got a bit of my salary. Go buy yourself something delicious.]
Gu Huai’s view on love was simple: since he was dating Bo Jianyan, he had to treat him well. He needed to earn more money to buy him food and clothes.
Bo Jianyan accepted the transfer, caught between laughter and tears:
[My baby is so capable. I’ll wait for you to support me.]
Gu Huai beamed at the praise. Satisfied, he told Bo Jianyan goodnight and put his phone down.
Bo Jianyan saw it was late and didn’t disturb him further. Gu Huai still had filming to do; he couldn’t let him know about the pheromone situation. If Gu Huai got distracted, it would only make things harder.
