- Chapter 36 - Give Everything Back
With a face that was seventy percent identical to his deceased ex-wife, Gu Chong naturally loathed looking at Gu Huai even if the person before him carried his own blood.
However, having dominated the business world for years, Gu Chong was long accustomed to such confrontations. Gu Huai’s questioning didn’t shake his composure in the slightest.
“What do I have to be guilty about? Why did you suddenly show up here for no reason?”
Gu Huai let out a soft laugh at his reaction and pulled out the inventory list he had printed at the film set. He tossed it to Gu Chong. “See for yourself, old man.”
Gu Chong truly detested him, yet he couldn’t touch him. He had been forced to endure Gu Huai’s provocations for years. Controlling his temper, he forced himself to scan the document.
His pupils dilated instantly, and his voice involuntarily weakened. “Where did you get this?”
Seeing his reaction, Gu Huai knew that most of the items on the list were likely gone. He sneered, “What? Does me coming to collect the things my mother left for me offend Director Gu’s eyes?”
Gu Chong stood up, unable to stop himself from releasing his oppressive Alpha pheromones.
Gu Huai reached up to cover his nose, looking as if he had caught a whiff of something foul. His expression was as indifferent as if he were looking at a total stranger. “Director Gu, rein in your pheromones. How many times do I have to repeat myself before you realize I’m a Beta?”
Gu Huai used formal honorifics, but in Gu Chong’s ears, there wasn’t a shred of respect in his tone.
Gu Chong raised his hand, wanting to slap this son of his, but his hand hovered in mid-air, hesitating several times before failing to fall.
Gu Huai let out a mocking laugh, his tone turning even more provocative. “Is Director Gu going to hit me? After ignoring me for all these years, are you finally going to ‘educate’ me now?”
Gu Chong was so choked with rage he could only sputter out one word: “Rebel!”
Gu Huai’s eyes swept over him coldly. He shifted from looking up at Gu Chong to standing up to meet him eye-to-eye. “So, Director Gu actually does consider me a son.”
Gu Chong grabbed the documents on the desk and hurled them viciously at him, then pointed toward the door. “Get out!”
Looking at the papers scattered all over the floor, Gu Huai crouched down, picked them up, and placed them back on the desk. He wasn’t even annoyed. “Father, I haven’t even done anything yet. Can you really not handle this?”
“Remember to take your high blood pressure medication.”
Gu Huai pointed to the items on the list. “I didn’t come here for anything else today. Please return everything on this list in full.”
Gu Chong’s eyelids twitched. These were the dowry items Gu Huai’s mother had brought over ten years ago. Physical objects were one thing, he could still produce some of those. But the land and real estate titles? Those had been used or liquidated long ago. How could he possibly get them back?
Seeing his hesitation, Gu Huai’s tone turned sharp. “Surely Director Gu isn’t so broke that he can’t produce these few things? Is it that you can’t return them, or you won’t?”
Gu Chong’s face turned ghastly. “You…”
Before Gu Huai could get an answer out of the old man, the study door was pushed open. “Dad, I’m coming in!”
Gu Huai didn’t even need to listen closely to know who it was. In the Gu household, the only person allowed to enter without knocking was Gu Yi.
Gu Chong truly gave this son of his many privileges.
As soon as Gu Yi entered and saw Gu Huai, his expression shifted. “What are you doing here again?”
Gu Huai never had a pleasant word for this younger brother, and this time he simply didn’t bother to acknowledge him at all.
Used to being ignored by Gu Huai, Gu Yi turned to his father. “Dad, what’s he here for?”
Gu Yi’s sharp eyes caught the list on the desk, and his eyebrows arched. “Dad, why are you listing the items in my mom’s room?”
“The jade buckle? Are you talking about the one I’m wearing?”
The moment he said that, Gu Chong’s expression became even more unsightly, and the look he gave Gu Yi carried a hint of reproach.
Hearing this, Gu Huai couldn’t help but clap his hands. “So that’s how it is. Director Gu, giving my mother’s dowry to your current wife? You certainly know how to ‘borrow flowers to offer to the Buddha.'”
Gu Yi’s face went pale. He pointed at the list and asked in disbelief, “Gu Huai, what are you talking about?”
Gu Huai looked at him with exaggerated patience. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. Why don’t you guess why there’s a character for ‘Huai’ engraved near the clasp of that jade buckle?”
Gu Yi had worn that buckle for over a decade and had never noticed such a detail. He pulled the jade buckle from his neck, his hands trembling slightly. He turned it over to the clasp and felt around with his fingers until he felt the slight indentation of a small character.
He held it up to his eyes. It was indeed the character Huai (淮).
Aside from Gu Huai, he couldn’t think of anyone else who would carve a name into such expensive emerald-green jade. The item he had worn for over ten years had never belonged to him.
Gu Yi fell silent, staring blankly at the name.
Gu Chong took in their reactions, knowing that Gu Huai had come specifically for that dowry. After a long pause, he finally spoke. “I will unfreeze your bank cards.”
Gu Huai didn’t realize a person’s skin could be quite so thick. His eyes curved into a smile as he looked at Gu Chong. “Does Father think I’m making this scene just to get your worthless ‘pity’?”
“You think far too highly of yourself.”
“Every single item on this list must be returned to me exactly as it was. For anything missing, expect my lawyer to come have a chat with you.”
Seeing Gu Yi standing there dazed, Gu Huai leaned into his ear and whispered, “Little brother, you should learn to return things that aren’t yours.”
Gu Yi was caught in a moment where he couldn’t put the jade back on, but he didn’t want to give it to Gu Huai either. He bit his lip and looked at Gu Chong. “Dad!”
“I’ll just pay for it, okay?” Gu Yi blurted out.
Gu Huai didn’t even bother giving Gu Yi a contemptuous look. His tone was indifferent, laced with mockery. “Is that so?”
“The auction price ten years ago was fifty million. At today’s market rate, it’s likely doubled. If you can produce that amount, that would be for the best.”
Gu Huai took the jade buckle from his hand. “I wonder what kind of upbringing Director Gu provides, teaching a child to take others’ things so shamelessly.”
“I’ll give my brother a good lesson today: if it’s not yours, don’t touch it.”
Gu Huai’s mother hadn’t left many mementos, and he cherished those she did. If Ye Yunsui hadn’t brought it up, he might have forgotten such an important matter because he had been so young back then.
Since Gu Chong didn’t love his mother, there was no reason for him to keep her things especially giving them to that woman.
“Director Gu, I’ll give you one week. If the items aren’t returned, I can’t guarantee I won’t do something ‘insane’ out of grief for my mother.”
Leaving behind that blatant threat, Gu Huai took the jade buckle and walked out without looking back.
Gu Chong’s rage reached its boiling point. He began frantically smashing things on his desk. “Gu Huai, you unfilial son!”
“You bastard!”
