- Chapter 18 - Mission: What Kind of Mission Requires Wearing a Dress?
Fu Tingchuan!?
Why would he appear in the camera of the Top 3 donor? Should he not be in the dormitory?
Could it be that besides him and himself, there was someone else in the dormitory?
Wen Leling instinctively checked if the mask he had not yet removed was still worn securely. He whispered, “Brother.”
Fu Tingchuan did not speak; his indifferent eyes shot directly toward him.
Confusion swirled in Wen Leling’s mind. His gaze was like that of a rabbit discovering a beast waiting for the right moment to capture it; his eyes darted around warily before finally converging on the background behind the man.
Seeing the photos hanging on the wall, he recognized that it was indeed Fu Tingchuan’s bedroom; there was no mistake. Furthermore, the floor to ceiling window behind the man did not reflect anyone else in the room.
So, the Top 1 was Fu Tingchuan, and the Top 3 was also Fu Tingchuan?
But the voices he had heard earlier clearly sounded different.
Could he have used a voice changer?
Wen Leling fell into deep thought, his brow furrowing involuntarily. His expression clouded over with a layer of bitterness, yet he forced a smile and asked, “Brother, is this account yours too?”
“No,” Fu Tingchuan denied.
“?” Wen Leling’s eyes flashed with surprise. “Ah?”
Fu Tingchuan’s tone shifted sharply: “Why did you not reply to my messages?”
Wen Leling took in every change in the man’s expression. It was obvious that Fu Tingchuan did not want to discuss the topic of who the true owner of the account was.
Wen Leling felt helpless but swallowed his protest. He kept the smile on his face but did not respond. Then, with a ding, the video call was disconnected. He opened the chat box and quickly sent three lines of text:
[I am sorry, Brother. I accidentally touched the end call button.]
[I am sorry, Brother. I just realized I accidentally put your main account on Do Not Disturb.]
[I am sorry, Brother. I am too sleepy. I am going to bed now. ^^]
I am sorry.
Tossing his phone onto the pillow, Wen Leling fell asleep as soon as his head hit the bed.
On the other side, having first been ignored after his message was read, subjected to cold violence, and then having the call abruptly hung up, Fu Tingchuan’s anger flared. Without blinking, he gave Wen Leling the full treatment: deleting and blocking him across all contact methods on that account.
Then, he received two messages:
22:30
[I let you log into my account to attend a meeting for me, and you fucking deleted my wife!?]
22:31
[You are dead.]
Ridiculous dreamer, Fu Tingchuan thought, ignoring them.
Wen Leling had no idea what had happened last night. Regardless, the moment he opened his eyes, his phone was flooded with 99+ friend requests, 99+ missed calls, and 99+ new message notifications. They occupied the entire screen, leaving him with nowhere to start.
It was the Top 3 donor.
With his eyes half closed, Wen Leling searched through the mess like looking for a needle in a haystack until he found a useful message:
189xxxxxxxx: [Baby, please do not be angry. The person watching the stream yesterday was not me. I was not the one who deleted you.]
It was not him?
Wen Leling’s still groggy brain went blank for a second. Then, an absurd suspicion that made one want to laugh flashed through his mind:
A dignified squad leader was secretly an account thief!?
“…”
Surely not.
Wen Leling shook his head and continued reading.
Suddenly, he felt that letting Fu Tingchuan be a thief was not entirely impossible either.
189xxxxxxxx: [He is my colleague.]
189xxxxxxxx: [I did not expect him to look through someone else’s social media accounts and, delete someone’s friends.]
189xxxxxxxx: [Are you angry at him, baby? What did he say to you?]
189xxxxxxxx: [Are you asleep, baby?]
189xxxxxxxx: [Do not ignore me, baby.]
The world is truly small, Wen Leling sighed with a bitter smile. He accepted the request and replied:
[I went to sleep early last night. I did not ignore you on purpose.]
[He did not say anything.]
There certainly were no chat records left on that end, but since many people clipped his livestreams, there was no point in lying. The same went for saying too much; the other person surely knew what they needed to know by now and was just asking the obvious.
After the message was sent, “Typing…” immediately appeared at the top of the chat interface. Wen Leling did not wait around; he got up to wash his face.
Yet when he returned, the other party was still typing.
Wen Leling’s expression shifted slightly. It was not that he lacked the patience to wait, but he was curious about what the person on the other side was typing that could take so long. However, his attention was soon pulled away by his growling stomach.
He planned to go get something to eat, which would take at least half an hour. By then, surely the typing would be finished.
But just as he reached the door, several disorganized and heavy knocks sounded from the other side. It was loud enough to send anyone still in dreamland straight to the afterlife.
This did not seem like Fu Tingchuan’s style of doing things. Who could it be?
“Get up! There is a mission!”
Wen Leling was shocked!
The door felt like it had lost its purpose. Wen Leling hallucinated a leopard pressing against his forehead and roaring. If he dared to move even an inch, the leopard would immediately become displeased, open its jaws wide, and swallow him whole, draining him dry.
Wen Leling did not move. He focused his thoughts and worried:
Xiao Wenye, is he back?
He needed to speak as little as possible in front of him and play the mute, but the other three probably would not cooperate.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
“Get up, Wen Leling!”
“Get up!”
Several more roars poured into his ears. The yelling made Wen Leling’s head throb with pain. His thoughts became a mess, and he pressed down the door handle with force to open it.
Suddenly, a small gust of wind hit him. Before he could react, he instinctively widened his eyes and then squeezed them shut, hunching his shoulders and turning his face away. His heart thumped wildly.
“You really can sleep.”
?
Instead of pain, he heard the man seemingly grumbling about him. Wen Leling first let out several long, shaky breaths. Once his mind calmed down and he realized the fist had been lowered, he opened his eyes. He then took out his phone and showed it to Xiao Wenye, letting him see clearly what time it was:
7:30 AM.
This was considered “being able to sleep”? If you want to find trouble, just say so.
However, Xiao Wenye did not even glance at it. He turned and said as he walked away, “The White Tower requires us to set out at eight o’clock for the mission. You only have half an hour left. Hurry downstairs to eat, and then change into the clothes on the living room sofa.”
Wen Leling remained silent, nodding as he followed behind him.
Who would have thought that even this could give Xiao Wenye a reason to start something? The man suddenly turned back and roared, “Can you make a sound to let me know if you heard me? Are you a mute?”
The shouting made his ears ache. This only increased Wen Leling’s resistance to communicating with him.
The two stood in the hallway in a stalemate, wasting time. Wen Leling tried to leave several times but was blocked by Xiao Wenye acting as a human wall until Min Chi appeared and called him away. Only then did Wen Leling succeed in finding food.
While eating, he belatedly checked the mission details issued by the White Tower. He learned that recently, there had been frequent incidents in many places where ordinary humans were mutating into Sentinels and attacking people indiscriminately. He thought of Ah Long.
These mutants all had one thing in common: they only had spirit animals but no mental power.
The White Tower was currently investigating the specific cause of the mutation. His mission was to go to Area 024 to arrest suspects and clear out the mutants in that area.
Finishing his meal just in time, Wen Leling prepared to change clothes and set out. A set of white clothes of an unknown type was placed in the corner of the sofa. He was a bit uncertain; would one wear such an easily soiled color for a mission?
But there was not much time left. He decided to change first. He picked them up, took them into the bedroom, and tore open the packaging. With a rustle, a long dress unfolded.
Wen Leling was stunned.
Why was it a dress!?
