- Chapter 52 - Watching the Drama
The Nanyuan New Energy Project was now running smoothly.
Although Nanxi was leading the project, she was fully aware of the assistance and contributions from Mu Yichen’s team.
She felt it was only right to properly thank Mu Yichen.
She decided to invite him to a meal.
She went to the Mu Corporation and, without letting the secretary announce her, knocked on the door and walked in.
Mu Yichen was on the phone.
“They’re causing a scene at the police station? Let them fight it out dogs biting dogs. They bullied Nanxi, so let them stir up trouble.”
Hearing her name mentioned, Nanxi walked over and asked after Mu Yichen hung up, “Who’s causing a scene?”
“Want to watch the drama?”
Though she didn’t know what was going on, Nanxi knew Mu Yichen wouldn’t ask without reason. She nodded, “Yes.”
Mu Yichen took her hand. “I’ll take you somewhere to watch the excitement.”
He brought Nanxi to the police station.
Members of both the Qin and Mu families were there.
Deng Xiu, for some inexplicable reason, rushed over to attack Lin Rufei but was stopped in time.
Furious and resentful, she raised her voice and shouted, “It’s Lin Rufei who set me up! I never harmed the old man. She was the one who instigated this.”
Lin Rufei had reached her limit. Even though Deng Xiu was Qin Xiaozhe’s mother, she showed no respect. “When did I ever instigate you? Don’t spout nonsense. This is a police station stop barking like a mad dog.”
With the old man now bedridden from a stroke, no one was foolish enough to admit their mistakes.
Lin Rufei’s parents stood by their daughter’s side, nodding in agreement.
Her mother even smiled and said, “My daughter would never do something like harming others. If you keep accusing her of hurting the old man, you’d better provide evidence, or we’ll sue you for defamation.”
Deng Xiu was so angry she couldn’t speak. Pointing at Lin Rufei, she looked at her son and burst into tears of frustration.
How could she have ever believed Lin Rufei’s lies? Now, not only was the old man paralyzed from a stroke, but she was also being dragged into this mess.
Unable to argue with Lin Rufei, Deng Xiu could only turn to her son for help. “Xiaozhe, Mom doesn’t want to be detained. It really wasn’t me.”
Qin Xiaozhe naturally couldn’t bear to see his mother face punishment.
His grandfather was the victim, but it was still unclear who was truly at fault behind the scenes. He didn’t believe his mother would falsely accuse Lin Rufei without reason.
Perhaps Lin Rufei really was involved.
But he was rational enough to know that without evidence, words meant nothing.
He had looked into it once this matter was officially determined, someone would face detention.
He turned to Lin Rufei. “My mother is over fifty. She can’t endure the hardship of detention.”
Lin Rufei snorted coldly.
“Your mother can’t handle it, so I should?”
Qin Xiaozhe had no time to figure out who was truly responsible. “She’s an elder. Do you really want to make her suffer like this?”
Lin Rufei laughed in anger. “What does her being an elder have to do with me? Just because she’s older, I should take the blame for her? I’m not Nanxi, who tolerates everything. If it’s her fault, she should bear the consequences. It has nothing to do with me.”
Deng Xiu grew even angrier. “I told you it wasn’t me! It was you! You set me up!”
“Where’s the proof?”
Deng Xiu’s eyes reddened with rage.
Qin Xiaozhe looked at Lin Rufei, gritting his teeth, his eyes filled with disappointment.
He thought back to when he was with Nanxi. His mother had often criticized her, but Nanxi never complained in front of him. She always respected her elders. If this situation had involved her, she would never have let an elder face punishment she would have taken the responsibility upon herself.
Looking at Lin Rufei, his disappointment grew. “I shouldn’t have held any expectations for you.”
Witnessing Qin Xiaozhe’s increasing disdain for her, Lin Rufei’s heart sank.
Mrs. Lin, seeing the situation, stepped forward to defend her daughter. “What do you all mean by this? Using your seniority to pressure my daughter? Don’t forget, she’s carrying the Qin family’s child in her womb. If she gets detained, there’s no guarantee your grandson will be safe.”
As Mrs. Lin’s words fell, everyone present fell silent.
Especially Deng Xiu, who had been red-eyed and ready to tear Lin Rufei apart just moments before. At the mention of the child, she suddenly remembered the baby in Lin Rufei’s belly and immediately deflated, her energy completely drained.
“What do you think they’ll choose?” Mu Yichen, observing the scene, asked Nanxi.
Nanxi glanced coldly at the unfolding drama nearby and sneered. “Deng Xiu is selfish, greedy, and sharp-tongued, but there’s one thing about her, she loves her son deeply and desperately wants a grandchild. It’s possible that for the sake of the child in Lin Rufei’s womb, she’d be willing to shoulder the blame herself.”
Back then, eight out of ten times Deng Xiu’s resentment and mistreatment of Nanxi were related to children.
Now that Lin Rufei was pregnant, regardless of whether the child was a boy or a girl, Deng Xiu had been longing for this for so long, how could she bear to let anything happen to her grandchild?
The Lin family had likely seen right through her, which was why they deliberately used this to manipulate her.
Sure enough, at the mention of the child, Deng Xiu’s aggressive demeanor faded. She turned to her son and said, “Xiaoze, the old man is getting on in years sooner or later, he’ll fall ill. Can’t we just let this matter go?”
Deng Xiu had grown to despise Lin Rufei. It was Lin Rufei who had egged her on to confront the old man and tell him about Qin Xiaozhe’s divorce from Nanxi. Yet now, Lin Rufei was denying everything and pinning all the blame on her.
As much as she loathed Lin Rufei, that unborn child was her grandchild, the one she had been waiting for all these years. Nothing could happen to it.
Qin Xiaozhe looked at Deng Xiu with a complicated expression. “Grandpa has had a stroke!”
“He’s old, who’s to blame if his health fails? Besides, he’s your grandfather, but I’m your mother. How could you bear to”
Qin Xiaozhe’s heart twisted like a tangled rope.
On one side was his grandfather, who had suffered a stroke; on the other was his mother, and then there was Nanxi, who had reported the whole incident to the police.
He couldn’t bring himself to abandon any of them.
Tormented, he turned his gaze to Lin Rufei, his eyes sharp as blades scraping across her face. “It’s Lin Rufei’s fault. If she hadn’t incited you, Grandpa wouldn’t be in this state.”
Deng Xiu quickly grabbed her son’s arm. “No, don’t. Lin Rufei is despicable, but she’s carrying a child our Qin family’s flesh and blood.”
Qin Xiaozhe gritted his teeth in frustration.
If they let this matter slide, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. He’d feel he had failed his grandfather, and besides, Nanxi would never agree to it.
“Nanxi won’t let this go,” he said.
Deng Xiu dismissed it with a wave. “What right does she, an outsider, have to meddle in our family affairs? I’ve looked into it the old man is part of the Qin family. This is an internal family matter. As long as we don’t press charges, it’ll blow over.”
“This matter is not over!” Nanxi stepped forward, her cold, sharp eyes fixed on Deng Xiu’s attempt to conceal the truth. “Grandpa is still lying in the hospital, and here you are shifting blame. Qin Xiaozhe, do you think this is fair to Grandpa?”
Qin Xiaozhe hung his head, not daring to look at Nanxi.
Seeing her son in distress, Deng Xiu stepped forward to shield him. “This is our family matter. Since my son doesn’t want you anymore, what right do you, an outsider, have to interfere?”
“Mom! Nanxi is not an outsider,” Qin Xiaozhe retorted.
Deng Xiu gritted her teeth in anger.
