- Chapter 50 - Caught and Turning on Each Other
Mu Yichen stood in front of Nan Xi, pushing Deng Xiu away when she reached out.
Deng Xiu stumbled and fell to the ground.
Seeing this, Qin Xiaozhe rushed over, ready to take action. “Mu Yichen, how dare you lay a hand on an elderly person!”
But before he could make a move, Mu Yichen threw a punch, landing it squarely on his already injured face.
Qin Xiaozhe, having suffered a loss, pointed at Mu Yichen and threatened, “You just wait.”
With that, he helped Deng Xiu up from the ground and left.
Nan Xi wanted to stop them, but Mu Yichen reassured her, “They won’t get far.”
Nan Xi looked at Mu Yichen, seeing the certainty in his eyes and his nod of reassurance, and understood that he had already arranged everything. The police would undoubtedly come for Deng Xiu and Lin Rufe.
“Thank you,” she said gratefully.
Mu Yichen patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry, the old man will be fine.”
Nan Xi nodded.
Just as they finished speaking, a scream echoed from nearby. They walked over to find Lin Rufe being restrained by the police, struggling and protesting, “What are you doing? Why are you arresting me? I haven’t broken any laws!”
Qin Xiaozhe and Deng Xiu, passing by, also turned to look.
The police informed her, “You’re suspected of endangering someone’s life. Come with us.”
Lin Rufe panicked. She had only wanted the old man to know about Nan Xi and Qin Xiaozhe’s divorce. Although the old man adored Nan Xi, what did it matter? Once divorced, she was an outsider. She refused to believe the old man would side with an outsider.
Moreover, she was pregnant. The old man would surely pressure Qin Xiaozhe to marry, and Qin Xiaozhe, who always listened to his grandfather, would undoubtedly agree.
But she never expected the old man to collapse and suffer a stroke.
Besides, it wasn’t even her who had brought the matter to the old man it was Deng Xiu.
Spotting Deng Xiu nearby, Lin Rufe shouted, “It wasn’t me! It has nothing to do with me! It was her! Arrest her! She’s the one who told the old man these things and caused his stroke. It has nothing to do with me!”
Hearing Lin Rufe pinning the blame on her, Deng Xiu was furious. “You’re talking nonsense! It was you who came to me, saying you didn’t want the child to be born without a name, that my son listens to the old man the most. That’s why I went. You’re the one who harmed the old man!”
Qin Xiaozhe, hearing this, was utterly shocked. “It really was you two!”
When Nan Xi had accused his mother and Lin Rufe of conspiring to harm his grandfather, he had been somewhat skeptical. But now, hearing their confessions, he was completely stunned.
Sensing her son’s disappointment, Deng Xiu quickly defended herself, “It wasn’t me! It was Lin Rufe! She egged me on! I did it for the child’s sake, but how could I have known the old man would have a stroke? It really has nothing to do with me!”
Deng Xiu spoke with such grievance, but Qin Xiaozhe’s anger only grew. Clenching his teeth, he demanded furiously, “Did you not know Grandfather’s health was poor? He loves Nan Xi the most. If he found out, he would be devastated. What you did was murder!”
Since the divorce, Qin Xiaozhe had regretted it. He knew Nan Xi valued her grandfather’s opinion the most, but even so, he hadn’t told the old man about the divorce.
He and Nan Xi had tacitly agreed to keep it from the old man, fearing he wouldn’t be able to handle it.
But these two they had gone and told him everything.
And worse, they did it while he was hospitalized.
Deng Xiu was utterly terrified, sobbing as she cried out, “Son, it really wasn’t me! It was Lin Rufei she came to me! I truly didn’t mean for any of this to happen!”
Qin Xiaozhe lifted his head, his eyes sharp and venomous as they fixed intently on Lin Rufei.
At that moment, regret washed over him so intensely it felt like his insides were twisting into knots.
Why had he ever tried to appease Lin Rufei? If he hadn’t wronged Nan Xi, if he hadn’t repeatedly disappointed her and crossed the line with his actions, she wouldn’t have divorced him, and his grandfather wouldn’t have suffered a stroke.
The more he dwelled on it, the heavier his self-blame grew.
He raised his hand and slapped himself sharply across the face.
“Son, don’t!” Deng Xiu’s heart ached as she grabbed Qin Xiaozhe’s hand, trying to stop him from hurting himself.
But Qin Xiaozhe pushed her away, as if he had made a firm decision. “You harmed Grandpa. I can’t help you.”
“Son.”
Without another word, Qin Xiaozhe turned and walked away, not once looking back.
Seeing that her son was abandoning her, Deng Xiu grew frantic. She tried to chase after him but was stopped by the police. All she could do was weep and plead, “Son, I know I was wrong! You can’t just abandon me! I didn’t do it on purpose!”
Lin Rufei watched Qin Xiaozhe’s retreating figure, her expression growing colder by the second.
It was clear to her now Qin Xiaozhe had completely washed his hands of the matter. If he wouldn’t even save his own mother, what hope did she have?
She needed to find a way to get her family to help her.
Nan Xi watched calmly as the two were taken away, her face expressionless.
Her grandfather had been harmed and left in this state because of them. They deserved the punishment that was coming.
“The Lin family won’t let this go easily, and Qin Xiaozhe probably won’t truly abandon Deng Xiu,” Mu Yichen remarked.
Nan Xi sighed softly. “It doesn’t matter. If they don’t face the consequences for their wrongdoing, then I’ll take on the role of the villain.”
Mu Yichen stood behind her, observing her slender shoulders, yet her words were resolute and powerful. He couldn’t help but admire her. “I’ll stand with you.”
If those two didn’t receive the punishment they deserved, then they would make sure they did.
Grandpa’s suffering would not be in vain.
When the Lin family received the news that their daughter had been arrested, Mr. Lin slammed his hand on the table in anger. “It’s all your fault for spoiling her! Now she’s caused such a huge mess. What are we going to do?”
If the Gu family insisted on pressing charges for intentional harm in relation to Old Master Gu’s stroke, the situation could become very complicated.
Mrs. Lin sat down, trying to calm him. “Don’t say that. We may be at fault, but the Qin family shares the blame too. Besides, it was Deng Xiu who provoked the old man into his condition. What does that have to do with our daughter?”
Mr. Lin’s face remained stern. “Both Deng Xiu and Feifei have been arrested. Qin Xiaozhe is a filial grandson he’s unlikely to let this go easily.”
“What is there to fear? This was Deng Xiu’s fault from the start. We can hire the best lawyers. As long as we insist that all the blame lies with Deng Xiu and our daughter is innocent, I refuse to believe Qin Xiaozhe would stand by and watch his own mother go to jail.”
“Besides, our daughter is pregnant. Deng Xiu cares so much about having a grandson we can use the child to pressure her. I don’t believe she won’t crack.”
Mr. Lin’s tense expression eased slightly. “For now, that’s our only option.”
With that, he instructed his people to contact the best legal team available.
Meanwhile, Qin Xiaozhe remained at the hospital. After the specialists proposed the latest treatment plan, Qi Zhengchu took the lead in implementing it.
In the Traditional Chinese Medicine department, acupuncture was performed on the old man, with Qi Zhengchu assisting on the side. After the session, Qin Xiaozhe asked, “How did it go?”
Qi Zhengchu glanced at him calmly and said, “Conservative treatment will take time to show effects; it won’t be immediate.”
Qin Xiaozhe sighed, feeling increasingly remorseful.
Qi Zhengchu left the ward and encountered Nanxi at the entrance. She was sitting outside the ward with Mu Yichen and immediately approached him upon seeing him. “How did it go? Was it effective?”
This was the first treatment after the expert team had adjusted the plan, so Nanxi was naturally anxious.
Qi Zhengchu nodded at Mu Yichen. The expert team had been arranged by him, and they were indeed professional. Working alongside these experts, Qi Zhengchu had learned a great deal.
Seeing Mu Yichen nod back at him, he turned to Nanxi and said, “Don’t worry. The old man’s condition has stabilized. With these additional treatments over the next three to six months, he will gradually recover.”
