You cheated, I divorced, why are you kneeling and begging me? - Chapter 49
Deng Xiu, feeling guilty, remained silent.
Lin Rufei, with a face full of grievance, said, “We didn’t do it on purpose. Besides, we just wanted to share the good news with Grandpa that I’m pregnant. We meant well. Who knew his health couldn’t handle it?”
Though it was clearly intentional, she spoke as if she were completely innocent.
“Whether it was well-intentioned or deliberate, you know the truth in your hearts,” Nanxi retorted, then turned to Qin Xiaozhe. “They caused Grandpa’s stroke. I won’t let any of them off.”
Hearing this, Deng Xiu pointed at Nanxi and snapped, “Who do you think you are? How dare you threaten me?”
Lin Rufei sneered disdainfully, “Nanxi, it was unintentional. Besides, your divorce wasn’t our fault.”
“Enough!” Qin Xiaozhe, already furious upon learning the truth about his grandfather’s stroke, roared the moment Lin Rufei finished speaking. “Get out.”
“Xiaozhe…”
Qin Xiaozhe glared at Lin Rufei, his impatience growing. “Trying to use Grandpa to pressure me? You harmed him. I’ve said it before, I won’t marry you. Because of what you did to Grandpa, the collaboration between the Lin and Qin corporations ends here.”
“What did you say?”
“I said the biggest regret of my life is ever loving you. From now on, Nanxi is the only one in my heart.”
Lin Rufei left in tears.
Qin Xiaozhe remained expressionless.
Deng Xiu tried to reason with her son, but he cut her off. “Mom, I’m canceling all your credit cards. If you continue associating with Lin Rufei, don’t expect to recognize me as your son anymore.”
“Xiaozhe, how can you treat your own mother like this?”
“Grandpa had a stroke. Canceling your cards is the most lenient punishment you’ll get.”
Deng Xiu stormed off in a rage.
Once the two were gone, Qin Xiaozhe looked at Nanxi with remorse. “I had no idea it would turn out like this.”
Nanxi didn’t want to hear it and interrupted him, “If Grandpa doesn’t recover, I won’t let them get away with it.”
Downstairs at the hospital, Nanxi could no longer hold back her emotions. The thought of Grandpa being provoked into a stroke overwhelmed her with sorrow, her eyes reddening.
Mu Yichen, seeing her distress, pulled her into his embrace. “I’ve invited the most authoritative experts, and they’re already on their way. I believe they’ll come up with the best treatment plan after the consultation. Grandpa will be fine.”
Nanxi nodded, leaning against Mu Yichen’s shoulder, her voice choked with tears. “My heart aches for Grandpa.”
Grandpa had always been good to her. Over the past five years, no matter what happened between her and Qin Xiaozhe or how much Deng Xiu bullied her, Grandpa had always protected her. The thought that they had driven him to this state for their own selfish interests made her tremble with anger.
She would definitely settle the score with Deng Xiu and Lin Rufei.
But seeing Grandpa suffer so much pained her deeply.
He had always been strong-willed, enduring illnesses without complaint, remaining sharp and dignified. Now, lying in bed, stricken by a stroke she couldn’t imagine how much agony he would feel when he woke up.
Mu Yichen held Nanxi tightly, gently patting her shoulder. “Grandpa will pull through.”
Thanks to Mu Yichen’s arrangements, top neurology experts from various hospitals quickly arrived for a joint consultation and formulated the best treatment plan.
When the experts concluded that, given Grandpa’s advanced age, surgery was not advisable and conservative treatment was recommended, Nanxi could no longer hold back her tears, which streamed down her face.
“Thank you, everyone. Thank you,” Nanxi said, standing up and bowing deeply to the assembled experts.
Helping Nanxi to her feet, the lead specialist reassured her, “Mrs. Mu, please rest assured. Mr. Mu has already briefed us. We will do our utmost to devise the best treatment plan and cooperate fully to ensure the elderly gentleman recovers without any lasting effects.”
“Thank you.”
After speaking, Nanxi turned to Mu Yichen, took his hand, and shared a knowing smile.
Mu Yichen squeezed her hand in return. “Go check on Grandfather. I’ll discuss the final treatment plan with them.”
Nanxi nodded and stepped out.
With so many specialists deliberating on the plan, Nanxi’s anxious heart finally settled.
Standing in the corridor, she wiped away her tears and was about to head to the ward to see her grandfather when she looked up and saw Qin Xiaozhe standing before her, seemingly having appeared out of nowhere.
“Xixi, we need to talk.”
Ignoring him, Nanxi turned to leave.
Qin Xiaozhe reached out to grab her hand.
Nanxi shook him off. “Qin Xiaozhe, have some self-respect!”
“Do you have to be so heartless?” Qin Xiaozhe raised his voice. “Even if I stand right here, you won’t spare me a single glance?”
He had stood before her multiple times, hoping she would notice the injuries on his face and say something caring. Yet, from start to finish, she hadn’t looked at him once. Even if she had seen him, there were no words of concern.
His heart sank with disappointment.
Nanxi sneered coldly. “Qin Xiaozhe, even if you were to drop dead right here, I wouldn’t so much as glance at you.”
To her now, they were nothing but strangers.
In the past, she had waited countless times, longing for him to notice her, but he had turned a blind eye, never cherishing her. Now that she had moved on, what was there left to see?
Moreover, she was remarried now, with a husband.
Mu Yichen surpassed Qin Xiaozhe in every conceivable way.
What was there to look at?
Qin Xiaozhe hadn’t expected her to say such things, his eyes filled with disappointment. “Just because I showed a little more concern for Lin Rufe a few times, you despise me this much?”
As he spoke, Qin Xiaozhe grew more agitated, pointing toward the ward. “Grandfather is still lying in the hospital bed, unconscious. All of this is because of us. If you hadn’t divorced me, Grandfather wouldn’t have been so furious, and he wouldn’t have had a stroke.”
Hearing his words, Nanxi found it unbelievable.
Grandfather’s stroke had clearly been caused by Deng Xiu and Lin Rufe.
Yet, in Qin Xiaozhe’s telling, it had become her fault.
She shouldn’t have divorced him.
But he had forgotten that it was he who, to please Lin Rufe, had forced her to sign the divorce papers.
“Qin Xiaozhe, I used to think you were despicable. Now I realize you’re not just despicable you’re shameless.”
She must have been blind back then to have fallen for a man like him.
Qin Xiaozhe paid no mind to Nanxi’s words, blocking her path. “Grandfather cares about you the most. All these years in the Qin family, he’s always protected you. Now that he’s had a stroke because of our divorce, you should come back to me. Only then will he recover. Otherwise, you’ll have failed him.”
He was trying to guilt-trip her.
“If Grandfather knew you could say such things, he’d slap you across the face. Qin Xiaozhe, if I were you, I’d go after the people who harmed Grandfather instead of standing here spouting nonsense.”
With that, Nanxi pushed past Qin Xiaozhe, intending to leave.
But Qin Xiaozhe grabbed her arm. “Not even for Grandfather’s sake? Nanxi, how can you be so heartless? Are you even human?”
At his words, Nanxi raised her hand and slapped him.
A crisp, sharp sound rang out. Qin Xiaozhe felt his head buzz, and his already injured face began to ache even more, as if being gnawed by ants.
He stared at Nanxi, unable to believe that she had struck him over a single remark.
“Nanxi, you wretched bitch! How dare you hit my son!” Deng Xiu rushed over from a distance, her face flushed with rage at the sight of her son being struck. She lunged forward to grab Nanxi by the hair.
But just as Deng Xiu’s hand shot out, a figure swiftly stepped in front of Nanxi, shielding her.
