- Chapter 43 - Being With Me Is Different
All night long, Qin Xiaozhe drifted in and out of consciousness, lying in bed and numbing himself with a bottle of alcohol.
His head was dizzy, yet he felt unusually clear-minded.
Scenes from the years he had spent with Nanxi flashed through his mind like a film, piecing together into a continuous reel.
After all these years, he had grown accustomed to Nanxi’s presence. She would stay by his side and take care of everything for him.
As he lost himself in these thoughts, his head grew heavy, and he unknowingly fell into a deep sleep.
When he woke up, the sky was already bright.
Just as he always did, Qin Xiaozhe squinted and called out, “Nanxi, I’m dizzy. Bring me some hangover soup.”
“Coming.”
It was Aunt Chen who brought the hangover soup.
Disappointed, Qin Xiaozhe remembered that Nanxi had already left him. He no longer wanted the soup. “Take it away.”
After getting up and washing, he returned to his room and reached for the clothes on the hanger, only to find it empty.
His mood grew even worse.
He opened the wardrobe and found it filled with clothes, but the task of matching them gave him a headache.
These were matters Nanxi had always handled; he had never needed to worry about them.
“Aunt Chen, pick out an outfit for me.”
Aunt Chen hesitated. “Sir, I’m not really sure about these things. It was always the madam who.”
She caught herself and quickly corrected, “It was always Miss Nan who did this.”
“Get out!” Qin Xiaozhe’s already low spirits sank even further.
Grabbing a random set of clothes, he left the house. Instead of heading to the Qin Corporation, he went straight to the Mu Group.
Last night, Nanxi had refused to see him, but today he was determined to find her.
However, when he arrived at the Mu Group, the front desk informed him that the CEO was on his honeymoon and would not be working for three days.
Qin Xiaozhe’s face darkened. Three days? He couldn’t wait even one.
The thought of Nanxi and Mu Yichen enjoying their newlywed bliss filled him with unbearable pain.
He set off again for Mu Yichen’s home.
But once again, he came up empty-handed. The security guard stopped him at the gate, refusing him entry, and said that Mr. Mu and his wife had already gone out.
Qin Xiaozhe was completely stunned.
At an altitude of ten thousand meters, Nanxi sat in a private jet, glancing at Mu Yichen beside her with a puzzled expression. “Where are we going?”
“On our honeymoon.”
Nanxi showed little interest. “Anywhere is the same.”
Seeing her despondency, Mu Yichen felt a pang of sadness. “Being with me is different.”
Nanxi was taken to a secluded island.
On the pristine white sand, Nanxi walked barefoot, the cool sea breeze brushing against her face, dispelling the gloom that had lingered for days.
Her mood did indeed lift.
In addition, Mu Yichen had arranged a candlelit dinner and a full-body spa by the sea.
It had been so long since Nanxi had experienced such comfortable luxury.
Now, sitting on the beach, gazing at the fine red wine before her and the heart-shaped candles scattered around, her emotions inevitably stirred.
“Do you like it?” Mu Yichen poured Nanxi a glass of wine and asked.
Nanxi nodded. “I do.”
His thoughtfulness deserved acknowledgment.
Once, she had been the one who constantly gave, while Qin Xiaozhe had only taken, never truly appreciating or thanking her from the heart.
Yet, Nanxi couldn’t help but wonder: Mu Yichen, with his cold and aloof demeanor, didn’t seem like the type to put effort into such sentimental gestures.
“Did you arrange all this?”
“Of course.”
“You don’t believe me?”
Nanxi shook her head. “I just didn’t expect you to spend so much time on me.”
She had never held much hope for this arranged marriage. Having already experienced a failed marriage, she no longer harbored any illusions about love. As long as it could help her brother, she was willing to marry anyone.
“You are my wife,” Mu Yichen said, a faint bitterness in his heart.
It seemed she hadn’t truly accepted him yet.
But it didn’t matter there would be plenty of time in the future.
A melodious dance tune began to play on the beach.
Mu Yichen walked over to Nanxi, extended his hand, and invited her to dance.
Nanxi was taken aback for a moment but reached out and took his hand, rising to dance gracefully with him.
Mu Yichen held her waist, pulling her close. As he caught the scent of her perfume, he could no longer restrain himself. Cupping the back of her head, he kissed her deeply.
Nanxi wanted to resist, but Mu Yichen gave her no chance. Her protests were swallowed by his fervor.
The sea breeze brushed against their faces, tousling their hair and obscuring their expressions.
Three days later, Mu Yichen brought Nanxi back to their home country.
With too many matters delayed, Mu Yichen went straight to the company without returning home first.
After a brief rest at home, Nanxi also set off for the company.
Just as she was about to leave, Zhai Qiao reported, “Madam, Qin Xiaozhe has been waiting for you for three days. He’s outside right now.”
“Have security escort him away.”
She had no intention of seeing him.
After Qin Xiaozhe was driven off, Nanxi left home and headed to the company.
Work had piled up in the project department, and Nanxi spent the entire morning organizing it. Stretching her tired muscles, she went to Mu Yichen’s office.
Approaching the matter professionally, she said, “President Mu, here is the current work plan for the project department. Please take a look.”
Instead of taking the documents, Mu Yichen grabbed her hand. Before she could react, he pulled her toward him, and she stumbled into his embrace.
“Mu Yichen, what are you doing? We’re at the company!”
Startled, Nanxi tried to stand up, but Mu Yichen gave her no opportunity.
His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her firmly against him, and his hand slipped inside her blouse.
Nanxi pressed his hand down. “It’s broad daylight.”
“Then is nighttime acceptable?”
Nanxi couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation. When she first met Mu Yichen, she had thought him a cold and composed man. She never expected him to be so unrestrained in private.
Ever since their wedding night, it was as if a switch had been flipped he wanted her every day. During their three-day honeymoon, she had been so exhausted she could barely get out of bed.
“Stop fooling around.”
“I’m not fooling around,” Mu Yichen retracted his hand but still couldn’t resist kissing her.
A knock sounded on the office door. Nanxi jumped back as if electrocuted, straightened her blouse, and shot Mu Yichen an annoyed glare.
Mu Yichen chuckled as he withdrew his gaze, but when he looked toward the door, his expression turned cold and stern, as if he had become a different person.
“Come in.”
Hou Jian entered and immediately felt Mu Yichen’s sharp, knife-like gaze sweep over him. He wondered inwardly if he had done something wrong, why did the president look so displeased?
“President Mu, Qin Xiaozhe is downstairs, demanding to see President Nan.”
Nanxi’s face darkened.
Ever since their divorce was finalized, Qin Xiaozhe had been clinging to her like a stubborn piece of gum, constantly seeking her out.
She could avoid him once, but she couldn’t keep avoiding him forever.
Just as Nanxi was about to speak, Mu Yichen stood up first and dismissed Hou Jian.
Then, taking Nanxi’s hand, he said, “It’s time to eat.”
Nanxi looked at him, her eyes filled with confusion.
“Leave it to me.”
Mu Yichen led Nanxi out of the office, hand in hand.
“President Mu, President Nan,” employees greeted them respectfully along the way, their eyes filled with admiration as they watched the CEO and his wife walking hand in hand.
After they left, everyone couldn’t help but remark on how perfectly matched the two seemed.
No wonder Nanxi had been assigned to such a crucial position in the project department right from the start she turned out to be the eldest daughter of the Nan family, making her and President Mu an absolutely perfect pair.
As the two walked out, responding to the employees’ greetings, they reached the entrance and, just as expected, encountered Qin Xiaozhe.
Spotting Nanxi from afar, Qin Xiaozhe hurried over. “Xixi, it’s me,” he said.
But as his gaze fell upon Nanxi and Mu Yichen’s intertwined fingers, his expression darkened, growing so stormy it seemed as if water could drip from his face.
