- Chapter 42 - Loving with My Life
The wedding was grand and lavish. To Nanxi’s surprise, her brother showed up at the ceremony to offer his blessings.
Aside from her brother, her parents also recorded a congratulatory video, explaining that they couldn’t make it back in time but would bring her a surprise upon their return.
Her brother took Nanxi’s hand and reluctantly passed it to Mu Yichen. “From now on, my sister is in your care. You must treat her well, or else.”
Before he could finish, Mu Yichen interrupted, “Of course.”
He had loved her for so long, and now that he had finally married her, he would naturally cherish her and never let her down.
After all, they were classmates, and Nanxi trusted Mu Yichen. Handing his sister over to him, he reassured her, “Don’t worry, I’ll always be here for you. If Mu Yichen dares to break his promise or mistreat you, I’ll make sure he regrets it.”
Her brother’s protective nature, just like when they were children, warmed Nanxi’s heart. Since his investment failure, he had been absent, but seeing him now, seemingly undefeated by setbacks, brought her a sense of relief. She nodded and turned her gaze to Mu Yichen.
Mu Yichen met her eyes.
His gaze was profound, filled entirely with her reflection. The moment their eyes met, a smile spread across his lips. He tightened his grip on her hand and made a promise, “I won’t give your brother any reason to lay a hand on me. From today onward, I will love you with my life.”
Simple words, yet they stirred Nanxi deeply. Long after the wedding ended, his promise lingered in her mind.
Though she had been married before, she had never experienced such commitment or respect.
Nanxi nodded in acknowledgment.
Overjoyed, Mu Yichen interlaced his fingers with hers and led her step by step into their married life.
The wedding ceremony was simple and uncomplicated. After the brief rituals, Mu Yichen took Nanxi home.
Walking through the door with him felt surreal, as if she were dreaming, unable to believe it was all real.
She was truly free of Qin Xiaozhe, and she had given herself to Mu Yichen.
The bridal chamber was filled with an air of celebration. Mu Yichen walked to the table, picked up a glass of red wine, and handed it to Nanxi. “Happy wedding.”
Nanxi took it, clinked glasses with him, and downed the wine in one go. “Happy wedding.”
Setting the glass aside, she sat on the bed, watching as Mu Yichen drew closer. An inexplicable nervousness crept over her.
Noticing her tension, Mu Yichen approached slowly, took her hand, and said, “Nanxi, we’re married.”
Nanxi nodded, her thoughts gradually clearing.
She had married Mu Yichen.
Feeling his hand on her waist, she grew slightly dazed, then shivered.
Sensing her unease, Mu Yichen gently brushed the stray hairs from her forehead, his voice mesmerizing. “Is this okay?”
Images of Qin Xiaozhe and Lin Rufe at the hospital for a prenatal check-up flashed through Nanxi’s mind. Her hands, resting on her waist, clenched the bedsheet tightly. Despite her anxiety, she closed her eyes and nodded. “Okay.”
They were close, Mu Yichen’s warm, steady breath tickling her cheeks. Fragments of time seemed to surface, merging into a distant river that slowly submerged all past memories, sinking them into the depths.
Nanxi remained clear-headed as a dense shower of kisses descended upon her, like spring rain nourishing the earth. She went from initial disorientation to gradually sinking into the moment, until she was completely swept away, falling into an exhausted sleep, only then did the clouds part and the rain cease.
Gazing at Nanxi sleeping in his embrace, Mu Yichen kissed her forehead, his eyes brimming with unconcealed joy and tenderness.
Only after confirming she was asleep did he dress neatly, slowly close the door, and leave the room.
Just as he was about to head to his study to attend to work, Zhai Qiao knocked and entered. “President Mu, Qin Xiaozhe has been waiting outside for two hours. He even showed up during your and your wife’s wedding, demanding to see her.”
Mu Yichen’s face darkened.
“Throw him out!”
“Understood.”
Qin Xiaozhe was forcibly dragged away by bodyguards.
He roared defiantly, “Nanxi, Nanxi, come out! Come out and see me!”
The bodyguards gagged him and sent him back to the Qin residence.
Lin Rufe, hearing the commotion, came out of the house and saw Qin Xiaozhe being pushed out of the car.
“Xiaozhe, are you okay? Are you hurt?” She rushed to support him, but Qin Xiaozhe shoved her away.
“Get lost!”
Lin Rufe’s heart ached. She had nearly miscarried, and out of concern for Qin Xiaozhe, she hadn’t even checked into the hospital, only taking some oral medication before returning home. And yet, not only did he show no care for her, he even yelled at her.
“Do you even realize today was supposed to be our wedding day?” Lin Rufe screamed angrily.
This was the day she had longed for the day she had finally waited for after Qin Xiaozhe and Nanxi divorced, the day she expected to marry him. And yet, at the wedding venue, he had left without a word to go find Nanxi.
Qin Xiaozhe snapped back to reality and glanced at Lin Rufe. If it weren’t for her, Nanxi wouldn’t have left. With resentment, he demanded, “Why should I marry you?”
Lin Rufe was furious. Pointing at her stomach, she retorted, “Qin Xiaozhe, how can you ask that? Don’t forget I’m pregnant.”
There was no joy on Qin Xiaozhe’s face, only disappointment. When he first learned about the child, he hadn’t been particularly happy. His initial involvement with Lin Rufe was merely to please her nothing more. Her pregnancy was something he had never anticipated.
She was pregnant no wonder Nanxi had been so angry, leaving him without hesitation and rushing into marriage with someone else.
“I won’t marry you,” Qin Xiaozhe declared, then turned and entered the house.
Lin Rufe stood behind him, swaying unsteadily as his words struck her like a blow.
She yelled at his retreating figure, “Qin Xiaozhe, you clearly love me! Why are you treating me like this?”
There was no response.
Qin Xiaozhe entered the study and locked the door, ignoring Lin Rufe’s frantic knocking from outside.
He sat quietly at his desk, his gaze fixed on the empty surface.
He often worked late into the night, and every time, Nanxi would bring him tea, placing it in the upper right corner, and light incense to help him stay focused.
Each time he finished his work and opened the door, he would find her asleep on the sofa.
Seeing her there, he would gently wake her, teasing her for not sleeping in bed.
Nanxi would simply smile and say she wanted to wait for him.
Back then, he had thought she was just being overly sentimental. Now, as these memories flashed through his mind, a warm current washed over him.
But now, the desk was empty and his heart sank along with it, plummeting into darkness.
In the future, would she prepare these things for Mu Yichen?
What is she doing right now?
The thought of her and Mu Yichen on their wedding night sent Qin Xiaozhe into a rage. He swept everything off the table in a fit of anger, even picking up his computer and smashing it onto the floor.
The sound of destruction startled Lin Rufei outside. She stopped knocking on the door, stood at the entrance, and clenched her teeth tightly.
Nanxi, it was Nanxi again.
She had thought that once Nanxi divorced Qin Xiaozhe and married someone else, Qin Xiaozhe would be hers, and her happiness would finally arrive.
But she never expected things to turn out like this.
So what if she was the eldest daughter of the Nan family? Lin Rufei had never suffered such humiliation before. She couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. Returning to her room, she picked up her phone, called home, and burst into tears, sobbing, “Mom, Qin Xiaozhe doesn’t want me anymore.”
