- Chapter 44 - More Effective Than Painkillers
Now, seeing Qin Xiaozhe again, Nanxi felt nothing in her heart.
Even the hatred had mostly faded. Standing there, he seemed like a stranger, entirely unrelated to her.
The past five years had been enough to repay the kindness he once showed her. Everything was settled.
“Let’s go,” Nanxi said, pulling Mu Yichen as she prepared to leave.
Qin Xiaozhe stepped in front of her, blocking her path. “Nanxi, let’s talk.”
Mu Yichen stepped forward, ready to have someone drag Qin Xiaozhe away.
Nanxi shook her head. “I’ll listen. Let’s see what he has to say.”
Since Qin Xiaozhe was so persistent, even if they drove him away this time, he would just come back again. It was better to make things clear once and for all.
Nanxi looked at him. “There’s nothing for us to talk about.”
“We were together for five years. I don’t believe you’ve given up just like that. You’re the young lady of the Nan family, yet you were willing to stay by my side for five years. That shows you loved me, you cared about me. If you’re willing to come back, I’m ready to remarry you.”
Qin Xiaozhe spoke earnestly, but Nanxi responded with a cold laugh. “I’m not willing.”
The past five years had been the darkest of her life. She had given her heart, only to receive no appreciation in return. She had finally moved past that pain, how could she possibly go back?
As Nanxi repeatedly rejected him, Qin Xiaozhe grew anxious, his words turning accusatory. “I know I made mistakes, but weren’t you at fault too? You hid your identity. You deceived me!”
Nanxi laughed. “Is that your excuse for cheating?”
Besides, her hiding her identity hadn’t caused him any loss.
Qin Xiaozhe froze, knowing he was in the wrong. “I know I was wrong. I apologize to you. Lin Rufei and I didn’t get married. It was just a moment of impulsiveness. You’re the one I truly care about. Come back with me, and we can be like we were before.”
Nanxi raised her hand, twisting the wedding ring on her finger as a reminder to Qin Xiaozhe. “Qin Xiaozhe, I’m married.”
“You can get a divorce.”
Qin Xiaozhe had lost his mind.
Nanxi let out another cold laugh, looking at Qin Xiaozhe’s desperate expression as if he hadn’t been the one who forced her to sign the divorce papers back then.
She told him coldly, “Qin Xiaozhe, I don’t love you anymore. From the moment you betrayed me, I stopped loving you. From now on, no matter who I am, it has nothing to do with you. Don’t come looking for me again.”
Having made herself clear, Nanxi turned to Mu Yichen and reached out to take his hand.
Watching Nanxi hold another man’s hand, Qin Xiaozhe couldn’t believe it. “Your marriage is just an alliance. He can’t possibly love you.”
“Whether he loves me or not is none of your business. You have no right to question it,” Nanxi said, pulling Mu Yichen away with her.
“Wait for me a minute,” Mu Yichen said, handing Nanxi over to Zhai Qiao’s care before stepping toward Qin Xiaozhe.
Their eyes met, sparks flying. Both men radiated killing intent, as if ready to destroy each other.
“She won’t love you. She still has feelings for me.”
As soon as Qin Xiaozhe finished speaking, a fist connected with his nose.
Mu Yichen had been itching to do this. Grabbing Qin Xiaozhe by the collar, he issued a warning: “Listen, stay away from my wife.”
“She’s mine!”
Another heavy punch was Qin Xiaozhe’s reply.
He grunted in pain and fell to the ground.
Refusing to accept defeat, he scrambled to his feet and took a swing at Mu Yichen, landing a punch.
Mu Yichen had initially intended to dodge, but noticing the car window rolling down in the distance, he withdrew his outstretched hand.
He took a punch to the face and gritted his teeth, enduring it.
“If you knew it would come to this, why did you act the way you did? When Nanxi was by your side, you didn’t cherish her. Now, with all this crying and whimpering, what kind of man are you?” Mu Yichen warned him, “Nanxi is my wife now. From now on, don’t bother her again.”
Bruised and battered, Mu Yichen got into the car.
Nanxi noticed the injury on his face and gently touched it. “Does it hurt?”
The wound wasn’t much, but sensing the concern in Nanxi’s eyes, Mu Yichen nodded and frowned. “It hurts.”
Qin Xiaozhe had actually hit him that hard.
There was medicine in the car, so Nanxi opened the first-aid kit and applied it to Mu Yichen’s injury.
Seeing the worry in her eyes, Mu Yichen suddenly felt the injury was entirely worth it.
Tentatively, he said, “Qin Xiaozhe got hurt too. I landed two punches on him.”
Nanxi remained expressionless, carefully applying the medicine. “Don’t fight with him again in the future.”
“Worried I can’t beat him?”
“It’s not worth fighting over someone like him.”
As she finished speaking, Mu Yichen took Nanxi’s hand and placed it over his chest.
Feeling his strong, steady heartbeat, Nanxi’s face flushed red. She tried to pull her hand back, but Mu Yichen said, “It hurts too much. Kiss me.”
“I’m not a painkiller.”
“You’re more effective than any painkiller.”
With that, Mu Yichen leaned in and pressed his lips to Nanxi’s.
Nanxi thought about pushing him away but, remembering he’d been hurt because of her, she didn’t resist. Instead, she wrapped her arms around his neck and let him seek comfort from her.
Not far away, Qin Xiaozhe stood disheveled, watching the scene through the car window. His chest felt as if a bomb were about to explode at any moment.
In the past, it was him Nanxi cared about, but now, it was Mu Yichen.
His eyes burned with rage, and he rushed forward, ready to confront them, but the car suddenly drove off.
He chased after it, but how could anyone outrun a car? Injured as he was, he stumbled and fell to the ground after only a short distance.
“Mu Yichen, just you wait!”
Before Qin Xiaozhe could make a move, Mu Yichen had already instructed Hou Jian, “Spread the word to all companies cooperating with the Qin Group cease collaboration immediately. The Mu Group will offer them opportunities instead.”
Opportunities from the Mu Group were something countless companies could only dream of. Abandoning a growing enterprise like the Qin Group in exchange for the Mu Group’s support was like winning the lottery, who wouldn’t jump at the chance?
Qin Xiaozhe had no idea trouble was brewing.
Injured and lost in thoughts of Nanxi, he drifted in a daze until his phone rang. Seeing it was Lin Rufei calling, he simply turned it off and ignored her.
Lin Rufei tried calling several times, but Qin Xiaozhe didn’t answer. When she heard the automated message indicating his phone was off, she flew into a rage. “Qin Xiaozhe, what do you mean by this?”
Furious, she went to his company, only to find he wasn’t there.
Where else could he be?
Luo Rongfei told Lin Rufei, “President Qin went to the Mu Group.”
Going to the Mu Group he must be looking for Nanxi.
That wretched Nanxi! Even after the divorce, she still had Qin Xiaozhe wrapped around her finger.
The more Lin Rufei thought about it, the angrier she became. She stormed over to the Mu Group and, sure enough, spotted Qin Xiaozhe downstairs.
“You came to see Nanxi again, didn’t you? You’re divorced! Why are you still looking for her? I’m your wife! Why are you sneaking around to see another woman behind my back? And why aren’t you answering my calls? Say something, Qin Xiaozhe! What do you mean by all this?” Lin Rufei grew more and more agitated as she spoke, shoving Qin Xiaozhe’s arm.
With that push, their eyes met, and Lin Rufei froze in place.
Qin Xiaozhe’s face and nose were swollen and red, as if he had been beaten.
“What happened to you? Who hit you? Why didn’t you fight back?”
“Get lost.” Qin Xiaozhe, irritated by the noise, growled under his breath.
Lin Rufei froze, her earlier sympathy vanishing instantly. She shoved Qin Xiaozhe again and angrily pounded his chest. “You tell me to get lost? Qin Xiaozhe, have you no conscience? I am your wife, your woman! How could you betray me like this and come looking for Nanxi?”
Qin Xiaozhe sneered coldly. “We aren’t married yet. You are not my wife.”
Lin Rufei was stunned. “Qin Xiaozhe, you’re going too far.”
Qin Xiaozhe nodded, his gaze icy and devoid of warmth as he looked at her. “You’re the one who went too far. You knew I had a wife, why did you cling to me back then? You’re the one who ruined my relationship with Nanxi.”
