- Chapter 36 - A Dirty Mind Sees Everything as Dirty
Deng Xiu’s words infuriated Nanxi.
“Deng Xiu, I don’t care what you think. Grandpa’s health genuinely requires hospitalization and recuperation. Step aside!”
“I won’t!” Deng Xiu glared defiantly, pointing at the nanny behind her. “I’d like to see who dares to take the old man out today. Our Qin family will not tolerate this.”
The nanny glanced timidly and didn’t dare to act further.
Seeing Deng Xiu starting to make a scene, Qi Zhengchu immediately explained, “Auntie, Nanxi isn’t lying to you. Grandpa’s health really isn’t good. His blood pressure is very unstable, and he could suffer a stroke at any moment, leading to a risk of bleeding.”
Deng Xiu shot Qi Zhengchu a disdainful look, her earlier smile gone. Pointing at him, she then glared at Nanxi. “Are you two in cahoots? Xiao Qi, have you been bewitched by this woman? To stay in our Qin family, she’s even cursing the old man. How could you help such a woman? Don’t tell me you’ve taken a fancy to her.”
Qi Zhengchu’s face instantly turned ashen. “Auntie, please show some respect!”
“Respect? If you want my respect, then stop engaging in such shameless behavior. No wonder Nanxi has been so willing to take care of the old man all these years it turns out she’s been fooling around with you. My son should have kicked her out long ago.”
Before she could finish, Nanxi stepped forward and slapped Deng Xiu, cutting off her words.
Deng Xiu covered her face in disbelief, staring at Nanxi in shock before letting out a wail. “You hit me? You shameless woman, how dare you hit me? I’m your mother-in-law!”
With that, Deng Xiu charged forward to retaliate.
Nanxi pushed her away.
“A dirty mind sees everything as dirty.”
“You!”
As Deng Xiu tried to rush at her again, Nanxi’s eyes turned icy cold, fixing her with a piercing stare that made Deng Xiu shudder and take a step back. “I thought you were virtuous and even considered letting you be my son’s mistress. Since you’re so shameless, I’ll tell my son right now and let him see your true colors.”
“Say whatever you want.” Nanxi turned to Qi Zhengchu. “Let’s take Grandpa to the hospital.”
Hearing this, Deng Xiu immediately blocked their way. “No! The old man cannot leave. You’re trying to use him to cling to the Qin family. As long as I’m here, don’t even think about it!”
“Step aside!”
Deng Xiu refused to budge.
“Oh no! The old man has fainted!” the nanny suddenly cried out from inside the room.
Nanxi’s heart clenched. She and Qi Zhengchu rushed into the room one after the other.
After examining the old man, Qi Zhengchu’s expression turned grave. “It’s an emergency. We need to get him to the hospital immediately.”
Nanxi instructed the nanny, “Call an ambulance.”
Then she turned to Qi Zhengchu. “Dr. Qi, please help save my grandfather.”
With that, she left the room.
“Stop using the old man to scare me. Don’t think I don’t know you and Qi Zhengchu are in this together. I’ve already called my son. Until he returns, no one is leaving today.”
Nanxi glanced at Deng Xiu, then went upstairs and barged into Deng Xiu’s room.
“What are you doing in my room?”
Deng Xiu had two great loves in life: playing cards and her jewelry.
Nanxi strode straight to her dressing table, grabbed all the jewelry, pushed open the window, and threw everything out.
“Ah! What are you doing? My jewelry! My gems!”
Amid Deng Xiu’s screams, Nanxi left the room, went downstairs, and, together with Qi Zhengchu, escorted the old man out of the mansion.
The ambulance arrived just in time, and the elderly gentleman was swiftly loaded into the vehicle and rushed to the hospital.
“Son, you’re finally back! Nanxi and Qi Zhengchu have gone too far they teamed up right under your nose to cause trouble, even taking the old man away, all to carry on their affair in secret! And my jewelry too! I tried to stop them, but Nanxi threw my jewelry away. A woman like that, you should divorce her immediately!”
As soon as Qin Xiaozhe stepped through the door, Deng Xiu rushed over, tearfully lodging her complaints.
Qin Xiaozhe’s face turned ashen, and without a word, he coldly headed to the hospital.
Over the past few years, Qi Zhengchu had been responsible for managing the elderly gentleman’s health. After arriving at the hospital, he joined the attending physician in the emergency efforts. Soon, the old man regained consciousness and was transferred to a hospital room.
“The old gentleman is out of danger, though he hasn’t fully woken up yet,” Qi Zhengchu said.
Nanxi felt a weight lift from her heart. “That’s such a relief. Thank you.”
Qi Zhengchu looked weary. “No need for thanks between us.”
He gazed at Nanxi, a trace of pity in his eyes. Had he not witnessed it himself, he would never have believed the Qin family could treat Nanxi so poorly.
What was even more absurd was their accusation that he and Nanxi were having an affair.
Worried that these misunderstandings would harm Nanxi, Qi Zhengchu spoke up, “They’ve misunderstood you. Should I go and explain?”
Nanxi smiled faintly. “They say flies go for cracked eggs, but flies land everywhere even on tables. Does that mean the table is at fault too?”
Though she didn’t say it outright, Qi Zhengchu understood her meaning perfectly.
The fault didn’t lie with the egg, but with the flies themselves.
Trying to explain endlessly wouldn’t make the flies understand, because flies are just flies. There was no need.
Qi Zhengchu had always known Nanxi as someone who meticulously cared for the elderly gentleman, but now he saw there was even more to admire in her. “You’re right,” he said.
As they were talking, someone called out Nanxi’s name.
She turned and saw Mu Yichen walking toward her.
Surprised, Nanxi asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I couldn’t reach you, but I knew you’d come to see the old gentleman, so I came,” Mu Yichen replied. Noticing the exhaustion on her face, he added, “You must be tired. Go and rest for a while.”
Though Qi Zhengchu didn’t know Mu Yichen, he could tell from the man’s custom-tailored, immaculate attire that he was someone of considerable means. Moreover, the way he looked at Nanxi was filled with concern.
Sensing it was best to step aside, Qi Zhengchu excused himself and went about his duties.
Mu Yichen nodded to Qi Zhengchu, then took Nanxi’s hand and led her to the VIP ward.
A cup of coffee was placed in front of Nanxi before she could even ask. Mu Yichen spoke first, “I’ve already been briefed on the old gentleman’s condition. This ward is quite comfortable you’ll be able to rest well here too.”
Nanxi looked around the layout of the VIP room, which was divided into inner and outer sections and even included a kitchen and lounge. She had been planning to arrange something similar for her grandfather but hadn’t had the chance yet. She hadn’t expected Mu Yichen to have everything prepared in advance.
She looked at him in surprise. “You don’t mind me taking care of Grandfather?”
After all, she was caring for Qin Xiaozhe’s grandfather. Yet Mu Yichen didn’t seem upset in fact, he had arranged everything for her.
Mu Yichen gently stroked her hair. “The old gentleman cares about you, so it’s only right for you to look after him. Why would I mind?”
He had arranged all of this simply because he wanted Nanxi to rest comfortably.
Since she couldn’t bear to part from the old man, he couldn’t do much else for her, but at least he could make sure she rested comfortably when she was tired.
Nanxi was deeply moved and took Mu Yichen’s hand. “Thank you,” she said softly.
She could feel that he genuinely cared for her and had her best interests at heart.
Mu Yichen gave her a brief hug, and just as they were about to speak, a nurse entered the room. “The patient is awake,” she announced.
