- Chapter 37 - Wishing You a Lifetime of Happiness
After bidding farewell to Mu Yichen, Nanxi immediately headed to the hospital room.
The old man had already woken up, but having just regained consciousness, his eyes were vacant. Hearing the sound at the door, he slowly turned his head and, upon seeing it was Nanxi, managed a difficult smile.
“Xi Xi.”
“Grandpa, how are you feeling?” Nanxi walked over and took her grandfather’s hand as she asked.
The old man shook his head with a smile. “I’m fine.”
Qi Zhengchu, who had been standing nearby, performed a basic checkup and reassured Nanxi, “Don’t worry, the old man is fine now. I’ll go write up the medical records. You two can chat.”
After Qi Zhengchu left, Nanxi stayed with her grandfather for a while until he grew tired, then she stepped out of the room.
She went to the doctor’s office and knocked on the door. Qi Zhengchu, having just finished the medical records, saw it was Nanxi and walked over. “There’s no need to worry too much. Let the old man stay in the hospital for a while to get through the most critical period smoothly. He’ll be much better then, but we need to monitor his emotional fluctuations during this time.”
“Thank you so much for everything,” Nanxi expressed her gratitude.
“It’s my duty,” Qi Zhengchu replied, though he felt Nanxi should really be thanking someone else. “The hospital room was arranged by Mu Yichen. The department head personally came to oversee the treatment, and the hospital’s quick response was also due to his intervention.”
Earlier, Nanxi had been too preoccupied with her grandfather’s condition to notice these details. She hadn’t realized Mu Yichen had arranged everything so meticulously.
Once she finished her tasks, she planned to go thank him.
“I understand.”
Qi Zhengchu looked at Nanxi with some confusion. “You and Mu Yichen, he seems very concerned about you.”
Given Mu Yichen’s status, his level of concern for Nanxi seemed unusual, hinting at a relationship beyond the ordinary. Qi Zhengchu had his suspicions but needed Nanxi to confirm them.
Nanxi nodded. “I plan to marry him.”
Upon hearing this, Qi Zhengchu was taken aback.
Mu Yichen was the most outstanding entrepreneur in Nan City, with assets in the billions and a sterling reputation. For him to accept Nanxi would undoubtedly be a favorable match.
But wasn’t Mu Yichen already engaged to the eldest daughter of the Nan family?
“How is that possible? Mu Yichen is engaged. How could you and he.”
“You’re right, he is engaged to me,” Nanxi stated calmly.
Qi Zhengchu was stunned, taking a long moment to process the revelation that Nanxi was the eldest daughter of the Nan family.
Although the Nan family’s status wasn’t quite on par with the Mu family’s, they were still among the top-tier families in Nan City.
Qi Zhengchu found it hard to believe that Nanxi was the Nan family’s eldest daughter, but seeing her composed expression, he knew she wasn’t lying.
Since she was indeed the Nan family’s eldest daughter, one thing puzzled him. “If you’re the Nan family’s eldest daughter, why did you marry Qin Xiaozhe back then?”
A marriage between the Nan and Mu families would have been a match of equals, but marrying into the Qin family was undoubtedly a step down.
Moreover, for so many years, Nanxi had been working at the Qin Corporation as an assistant, and at home, she had taken meticulous care of Qin Xiaozhe. Qi Zhengchu found it hard to imagine that she was, in fact, a genuine heiress.
What’s more, all these years, the Qin family had never known her true identity, and she had never disclosed it.
“I was blind back then,” Nanxi said with a self-deprecating smile. “But now I’ve finally seen things clearly.”
Thinking of the pain Qin Xiaozhe had caused Nanxi recently, Qi Zhengchu didn’t press further. Instead, he supported her decision. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you,” Nanxi said, taking out the invitation. “I’m getting married the day after tomorrow, and I’d like to invite you to attend.”
Qi Zhengchu accepted it with a nod, his eyes lingering on the striking photo of Nanxi and Mu Yichen. For some reason, they seemed exceptionally well-matched.
“I’ll be there,” he replied. No sooner had he spoken than an angry voice cut through the air.
“What are you trying to pull? Not only did you deliberately take Grandpa away, but you also lost my mother’s jewelry. Did you think doing this would make me pay more attention to you?” Qin Xiaozhe grabbed Nanxi’s wrist, his eyes blazing with fury.
“Let go!” Nanxi snapped coldly.
Qin Xiaozhe stared at her, showing no intention of releasing her.
As the two stood locked in a stalemate, Qi Zhengchu intervened. “Xiaozhe, let her go. You’ve misunderstood her.”
“Misunderstood?” Qin Xiaozhe turned to Qi Zhengchu, his longtime friend now seeming like a stranger. “You’re defending her too? What, have you fallen for her?”
“What nonsense are you talking!”
“Why so defensive? Did I hit a nerve?”
Before Qin Xiaozhe could finish, Nanxi raised her hand and slapped him across the face.
The sharp sound of the slap echoed, leaving Qin Xiaozhe’s face turned to the side, stunned.
He stared at Nanxi in disbelief, his anger flaring as he tightened his grip on her wrist. “What, did I say something wrong?”
Disgusted by his arrogance, Nanxi used her other hand to deliver another slap.
“Nanxi!” Qin Xiaozhe’s rage boiled over as he seized her hand, looking as if he wanted to devour her.
Nanxi met his gaze head-on, ignoring his fury, her eyes locked on his.
Fearing Qin Xiaozhe might hurt her, Qi Zhengchu spoke urgently, “Grandpa fainted, and your mother kept blocking us from taking him to the hospital. Nanxi had no choice but to discard her jewelry.”
Qin Xiaozhe was completely dumbfounded. After a moment, he stared at Qi Zhengchu in disbelief. “Still making excuses for her!”
“Grandpa is in the hospital right now. His medical records are here you can see for yourself if you don’t believe me.”
Qin Xiaozhe remained skeptical until Qi Zhengchu produced the medical records, finally realizing he had wronged Nanxi.
“Grandpa is in the ward, just fallen asleep. Go see for yourself.”
He released Nanxi’s hand and walked in, bewildered. Through the slightly ajar door, he saw his grandfather lying in the hospital bed, hooked up to monitoring devices.
Stunned, Qin Xiaozhe turned back to Nanxi. “Why didn’t you tell me Grandpa was unwell?”
“You have the nerve to ask,” Nanxi retorted, her anger resurfacing. “When I found out Grandpa was sick, I tried to reach you, but you were with Lin Rufei for her prenatal checkup. I wanted to tell you about Grandpa, but the two of you kept talking over me, never giving me a chance to speak.”
Qin Xiaozhe froze, realizing that the time he had run into her at the hospital was because of his grandfather’s condition. He had assumed she had followed him there just to see him.
“Nanxi is right,” Qi Zhengchu added. “I called you over a dozen times, but no one answered. When I finally found you, you wouldn’t listen to a word I said and even suspected something was going on between Nanxi and me. Qin Xiaozhe, we’ve been friends for years, and Nanxi has been with you all this time. How could you doubt us? You’ve gone too far.”
Qin Xiaozhe looked blankly at Qi Zhengchu, seeing the disappointment in his eyes before he turned and walked away. His gaze then fell to Nanxi, his expression heavy with regret.
“If you’re innocent, why didn’t you explain? Did you deliberately let me misunderstand?” Qin Xiaozhe asked with anger.
Even now, Qin Xiaozhe was still making excuses for his own negligence.
Nanxi no longer wanted to argue with him. “You never trusted me in the first place, and Lin Rufei kept stirring things up beside you. How could I possibly explain? Qin Xiaozhe, let me make this clear one last time: whatever you and Lin Rufei do, I don’t care. If you two get married and have children, I’ll be the first to wish you a lifetime of happiness. From now on, let’s each go our own way and leave each other alone.”
With that, Nanxi turned and walked away.
