- Chapter 35 - Disagreement
Qin Xiaozhe had been punched so hard that his nose was bleeding. Lin Rufei saw this and hurried over to help him deal with it.
Qin Xiaozhe’s face was cold. Compared to the pain in his nose, what hurt him more was the fact that his good brother had fought with him over Nanxi.
Qi Zhengchu liked Nanxi.
The moment this possibility crossed Qin Xiaozhe’s mind, an inexplicable fury surged within him.
His own brother was coveting his woman. The more Qin Xiaozhe thought about it, the angrier he became.
Lin Rufei knew he was in a bad mood. She glanced at him and continued wiping the blood, saying as she worked, “You and Dr. Qi have been brothers for so many years. How could he side with Nanxi? It seems that in his heart, you, his brother, are less important than a woman.”
Hearing this, Qin Xiaozhe’s anger intensified. When Lin Rufei accidentally hurt him, he pushed her away abruptly.
“I’ll have someone take you back,” Qin Xiaozhe said, instructing Luo Rongfei to escort Lin Rufei home. He then headed to Qi Zhengchu’s office.
He wanted to clarify when exactly Qi Zhengchu had started liking Nanxi.
His good brother was actually coveting his woman. This was a score he needed to settle with him properly.
However, when he arrived at the office, Qi Zhengchu was nowhere to be found. Upon inquiry, he learned that Qi Zhengchu had already left.
Frustrated, Qin Xiaozhe decided to call him. Only when he picked up his phone did he notice over a dozen missed calls, all from Qi Zhengchu earlier.
He frowned. Could Qi Zhengchu’s anger be related to these calls?
If he had called repeatedly, it must have something to do with his grandfather.
His anger subsided slightly, and Qin Xiaozhe immediately drove to the old mansion.
At that moment, in the old man’s room.
Nanxi was holding a bowl of rice, feeding the old man spoonful by spoonful. “Grandpa, there’s not much rice here. You need to finish it all. No picky eating.”
The old man smiled and took the bowl from her. “I can do it myself. I’m not a child anymore.”
After the meal, Nanxi helped the old man check his blood pressure. Although she had already anticipated it, the reading still startled her, his blood pressure had soared to 178.
Nanxi put away the blood pressure monitor and said calmly, “Grandpa, according to your health records, your appetite hasn’t been good lately, and your blood pressure has been unstable. How about staying in the hospital for a while to recuperate? What do you think?”
Upon hearing the suggestion of hospitalization, the old man waved his hand dismissively. “No, I won’t go. We have doctors at home, and Xiao Qi is also keeping an eye on things. There’s no need for me to be hospitalized.”
Nanxi sat by the bed, massaging the old man’s arm as she continued to persuade him. “Grandpa, I’ve been quite busy lately and won’t be able to visit you often. If you’re in the hospital, I’ll feel more at ease. I promise to make time every day to see you there.”
The old man sighed bitterly. “When you’re old, ailments pile up. There’s no need for you to worry. I’ll live as long as I’m meant to.”
“Grandpa.” Hearing this, Nanxi’s eyes welled up with tears.
She had never known the care of grandparents growing up, and her parents were always busy. She had been raised by her brother and a nanny. After marrying into the Qin family, although her relationship with Qin Xiaozhe felt more like that of a superior and subordinate than a married couple, the old man had always doted on her, protected her, and genuinely cared for her. Over the years, she had taken charge of his health, and as time passed, she had grown deeply attached to him.
Seeing Nanxi’s eyes well up with tears, the old man’s heart ached. With his wrinkled hand, he gently wiped her tears and quickly relented, “Don’t cry. I’ll go to the hospital. Don’t worry, my dear. I’ll strive to live to 99, to see you and Xiaozhe have a baby with my own eyes. I want to hold my great-grandchild in my arms.”
The old man coaxed Nanxi, speaking with a smile as he did.
Nanxi looked at her grandfather and finally broke into a smile through her tears. “Grandpa, I’ll go pack your things right away.”
As Nanxi left the old man’s room and closed the door behind her, she sighed with a bitter smile.
The old man would soon have a great-grandchild, but the child wasn’t hers and Qin Xiaozhe’s.
Still, no matter what, it was Qin Xiaozhe’s child, and she believed her grandfather would surely love it dearly.
With that thought, Nanxi instructed the nanny to pack the old man’s things for the hospital. Once everything was arranged, they would leave immediately.
When Qi Zhengchu arrived, Nanxi had already packed the suitcase.
“Did you tell Qin Xiaozhe that Grandpa is being hospitalized?” Nanxi asked as soon as she saw him.
Qi Zhengchu gave a wry smile. “Sorry, I forgot to mention it.”
He had intended to tell Qin Xiaozhe when he saw him, but he was so upset that he completely forgot.
Nanxi was puzzled. What did he mean by “forgot”? She was about to ask for details when she noticed the bruises on Qi Zhengchu’s face.
“What happened to your face?”
Qi Zhengchu shook his head. “Just a bump. How is the old man? Did he agree to be hospitalized?”
“Yes, we can leave as soon as everything is packed.”
The nanny placed the packed items and the suitcase by the door. Nanxi went into the room to tidy up, but before entering, she reminded Qi Zhengchu, “If you can’t reach Qin Xiaozhe, let Deng Xiu know.”
In the past, Qi Zhengchu would have thought it unnecessary, but now, after witnessing Qin Xiaozhe’s behavior firsthand, he was deeply disappointed in his friend.
Informing Deng Xiu would help avoid unnecessary trouble.
Just as Qi Zhengchu was about to look for Deng Xiu, he saw her walking in cheerfully from outside, muttering to herself, “I won quite a bit today.”
“Auntie,” Qi Zhengchu greeted her.
Deng Xiu spotted Qi Zhengchu and warmly pulled him inside. “Xiao Qi, you’re here! Looking for Xiaoze? He’s busy with work and should be at the company now. Stay for dinner, I’ll call Xiaoze and let him know.”
“Auntie, I’m not here for Qin Xiaozhe. It’s about the old man he’s not feeling well. I suggested he be hospitalized for a thorough check-up and some rest.”
Deng Xiu never concerned herself with the old man’s health. The nanny usually took care of him, while his condition was managed by Qi Zhengchu and Nanxi.
She waved her hand dismissively. “If he needs to be hospitalized, then hospitalize him.”
Qi Zhengchu nodded. “Alright, I’ll handle it.”
Just then, Nanxi emerged from the room. The moment Deng Xiu saw her, her smiling face instantly turned cold. Pointing at Nanxi, she strode over. “What are you doing in my house?”
“Grandpa isn’t feeling well. I’m here to take him to the hospital,” Nanxi replied coldly.
Seeing that Nanxi intended to accompany the old man, Deng Xiu objected immediately. “Who do you think you are? You’re not taking him to the hospital. I won’t allow it!”
In the past, as the Qin family’s daughter-in-law, such matters were Nanxi’s responsibility.
But now, she was nothing a nobody yet she still had the nerve to try and take the old man for medical treatment.
Deng Xiu didn’t believe for a second that Nanxi had good intentions. She was sure Nanxi just wanted to cling to her son and refuse to leave the Qin family.
What a pipe dream.
“Grandpa’s blood pressure is almost 180, and it’s been unstable lately. If he doesn’t get hospitalized soon, there could be risks.” Nanxi suppressed her anger as she reminded Deng Xiu.
Deng Xiu, however, dismissed it with a scoff, “What risks? Don’t think I don’t know you came to the old house to take the old man to the hospital just so you can keep clinging to the Qin family and my son.”
“Deng Xiu, don’t project your own filth onto me. The Qin family means nothing to me,” Nanxi retorted.
Deng Xiu didn’t believe her. “You talk big, but if you really don’t care, why are you here? I refuse to believe you’d be so concerned about an old man who isn’t even related to you. If the old man were truly at death’s door, wouldn’t Xiaozhe, his own grandson, step in?”
