- Chapter 33 - Thinking She Regretted
“President Nan, everything for the charity event has been prepared according to your instructions.”
In the CEO’s office of Nanyuan Group, Zhao Dong knocked and entered, reporting to Nanxi.
“Director Zhao has done an excellent job. Proceed as planned tomorrow, and you’ll be personally overseeing it,” Nanxi said with a satisfied smile as she reviewed the charity event preparations.
“Understood.”
Nanxi watched Zhao Dong leave with contentment.
Since he had joined Nanyuan and became the publicly announced CEO, the company had quickly gotten on the right track. Nanxi could feel the changes things were getting better and better.
At this pace, if they continued to maintain it, coupled with the boost from the new energy project collaboration with the Mu family, Nanyuan’s future would only grow more brilliant.
As Nanxi stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, envisioning Nanyuan’s glorious future, her phone rang.
Seeing it was Qi Zhengchu calling, she frowned and instinctively wanted to hang up.
The last time Qi Zhengchu had asked her out for a meal, she had thought it was related to her grandfather’s health. Unexpectedly, it was because of Qin Xiaozhe. The memory still left her feeling uneasy.
However, after a moment of hesitation, she answered the call.
“Nanxi, the old man’s blood pressure has been rising these past few days, and his condition is not good. You need to come over right away.”
Since it concerned the old man, Nanxi didn’t delay. She immediately left the company and headed to the hospital.
When Qi Zhengchu saw Nanxi, he looked somewhat guilty. “About what happened last time, I didn’t expect it to turn out like that. I’m sorry.”
Qin Xiaozhe had approached him, saying that Nanxi was refusing to meet him and wouldn’t return home, so he asked Qi Zhengchu to mediate between them.
Qi Zhengchu, seeing Qin Xiaozhe’s sincere attitude and his promise to change for Nanxi, had agreed.
Who would have thought it would end up like this?
Although Qi Zhengchu was Qin Xiaozhe’s close friend, Nanxi had known him for five years and understood him well. This matter had nothing to do with Qi Zhengchu; he had simply trusted his good friend too much and failed to see his true nature.
Nanxi waved her hand, not wanting to dwell on it. “Let it go, it’s in the past. Tell me about Grandpa’s condition.”
Qi Zhengchu quickly pulled out the old man’s health reports from the past few days. “The old man’s condition isn’t good. His blood pressure has been spiking, and there are signs of other issues as well. If this continues, he might be at risk of a stroke.”
So serious?
Nanxi grew worried and examined the reports. “What can we do to prevent it?”
“I recommend hospitalization.”
“Then let’s hospitalize him.”
Qi Zhengchu frowned. “The old man is stubborn; he won’t agree to be hospitalized. You’ll need to persuade him.”
Nanxi was determined to try.
She turned to head back to the old residence.
But after a few steps, a thought occurred to her.
Now that she and Qin Xiaozhe were practically strangers, her previous role as a granddaughter-in-law, caring for and looking after the old man, had been appropriate. But now, to the Qin family, she was an outsider. The old man’s health was no small matter. If she went and persuaded him to go to the hospital, not only would she not gain the Qin family’s understanding, but she might even be blamed and cause unnecessary trouble.
After some thought, Nanxi said to Qi Zhengchu, “I can try to persuade Grandpa to be hospitalized, but before I go to the old residence, you need to call Qin Xiaozhe. He should know about this and agree to it.”
Qi Zhengchu picked up the phone and dialed, but the call wouldn’t connect.
“It’s not going through. He might be busy with work.”
“I’m going back to the old house to check on Grandpa first. You keep trying to contact Qin Xiaozhe, and let me know once he agrees.”
After speaking, Nanxi left the doctor’s office.
Once Nanxi was gone, Qi Zhengchu continued making calls, but no matter how many times he dialed, no one answered on the other end.
In the lobby of the hospital’s first floor.
Qin Xiaozhe helped Lin Rufe sit down. “Wait here for a while. I’ll go pay the fees.”
Lin Rufe smiled and nodded, happily stroking her stomach. “Go ahead. The baby and I will be waiting for you here.”
Qin Xiaozhe nodded and left.
As he turned around, his phone rang. Before he could check it, Lin Rufe grabbed his hand and snatched the phone away. “Xiaozhe, today is the day you’re accompanying me for my check-up. No work allowed.”
Qin Xiaozhe looked at Lin Rufe and nodded without refusing. “Alright.”
Lin Rufe hung up the call, saw Qi Zhengchu’s name on the screen, and simply turned off the phone.
There was no way she’d let anyone disturb her and Qin Xiaozhe’s special moment.
Qin Xiaozhe stood at the payment window, waiting for a long time before it was finally his turn.
He had never done such things for anyone before. In the past, all these tedious tasks were handled by Nanxi, especially when it came to Grandpa, who had to visit the hospital periodically. Nanxi had always taken care of everything. If he had known the hospital would be this crowded, with long queues and payments to be made, he should have left it to Nanxi.
The thought had barely crossed his mind when he remembered Nanxi had already resigned. She was no longer his personal assistant.
Nanxi stepped out of the elevator, ready to leave, when she noticed a familiar figure. Taking a closer look, it was indeed Qin Xiaozhe. She immediately walked over. “Qin Xiaozhe.”
Hearing his name, Qin Xiaozhe picked up the receipt and glanced back. It was Nanxi. Instantly, he grew furious.
“You knew I was at the hospital and followed me here, Nanxi. You really are stubborn. I gave you chances, but you didn’t cherish them. Now you’re deliberately blocking my way, trying to regret your decision? Let me tell you, it’s too late!” Qin Xiaozhe looked at Nanxi’s anxious expression, feeling smug.
He had expected this all along. How could Nanxi possibly live without him? He had given her several opportunities to back down, but she had stubbornly refused, all because she was jealous. Deep down, she simply couldn’t bear to let him go.
And now, she had even chased him to the hospital. How desperate.
Nanxi rolled her eyes. “You’re overthinking it. I have something to discuss with you.”
“I’m heading to the pharmacy. I don’t have time to listen to your regrets here.”
Qin Xiaozhe walked off with the payment slip, not giving Nanxi a chance to speak.
Nanxi chased after him. “Qin Xiaozhe, stop right there!”
“Nanxi, what do you think you’re doing? Xiaozhe has already divorced you. Why are you still chasing after him?” Lin Rufe, hearing Nanxi’s voice, came over.
Nanxi didn’t want to argue and pushed Lin Rufe aside.
“My stomach!” Lin Rufe exaggeratedly clutched her belly, dropping the medical report in her hand. She pretended to be in pain and began to wail loudly.
People nearby heard the commotion and gathered around.
With more onlookers, Lin Rufe started crying pitifully, pointing at Nanxi. “Nanxi, you’re trying to steal my husband, even coming to the hospital to do it. And you’d treat a pregnant woman like this? How heartless can you be?”
The crowd, sensing drama, began to look at Nanxi with disdain.
So it was a case of a mistress trying to steal a man.
“This woman looks decent, but who would’ve thought she’d be so shameless.”
“Mistresses are always pretty and cunning, going to great lengths to snatch someone else’s man.”
“The legitimate wife is already pregnant, and you still bully her like this? It’s utterly heartless.”
“If I were her mother, I’d strangle a daughter like that.”
Lin Rufei overheard the murmurs and smirked triumphantly.
Nanxi listened to the surrounding voices, her gaze turning icy as she scanned each gossiping face. Finally, her eyes settled on Lin Rufei. She walked over, knelt slowly, and pinched Lin Rufei’s chin, lifting her face. “Lin Rufei, between the two of us, who is really the other woman?”
