- Chapter 32 - The Sparrow Lurking Behind
Lin Rufei picked Qin Xiaozhe up from the police station.
Sitting in the car, she looked at his gloomy, anger-twisted face and tenderly stroked it, her heart aching. “Are you okay? Did they do anything to you?”
Qin Xiaozhe was seething with rage, but upon seeing Lin Rufei’s concern, he suppressed his anger, his expression softening.
He had been taken to the police station because of Nanxi, yet Lin Rufei not only didn’t get angry but came to help him instead.
Indeed, Lin Rufei was the most considerate and gentle woman.
He took her hand and proactively explained, “Rufei, I saw Nanxi with Mu Yichen’s bodyguard and followed her to the Mu residence. That’s why I ended up at the police station.”
Afraid she might misunderstand, he added, “I don’t care about her, but we haven’t finalized the divorce yet. For her to be seen coming and going with another man it’s like she doesn’t take me seriously at all.”
A mocking smile curled at the corner of Lin Rufei’s lips, bitterness welling inside her. If he truly didn’t care, it wouldn’t matter if Nanxi was with another man even if she slept with someone else, it would be none of his business.
But now, not only had Qin Xiaozhe pursued her, he had also offended Mu Yichen because of Nanxi. Clearly, he still had feelings for her and hadn’t let go.
Though irritated by what she heard, she remembered her mother’s advice and swallowed her anger. With a gentle smile, she allowed Qin Xiaozhe to hold her hand and said softly, “I believe you. This is all Nanxi’s fault it has nothing to do with you.”
Touched, Qin Xiaozhe told her, “Rufei, I knew you were the best and would understand me. By the way, the cancellation of the cooperation between the Qin and Lin corporations it was because of Nanxi. Mu Yichen admitted it himself.”
Mu Yichen had actually targeted the Qin and Lin corporations for Nanxi’s sake.
Lin Rufei felt deeply displeased. Noticing the fury in Qin Xiaozhe’s eyes, she decided to add fuel to the fire.
She took out her phone, pulled up a message, and handed it to him. “This is a recording Nanxi sent me.”
“What happened between us won’t affect our relationship. If you come back obediently, I can promote you at the company. Let’s just pretend nothing happened.”
“I’ve come personally to ask you back. What more do you want? I do have feelings for Rufei, but we are still husband and wife. I never intended to give up on you.”
Hearing his own voice, Qin Xiaozhe’s face turned ashen.
He never expected Nanxi to have recorded their conversation and sent it to Lin Rufei.
Fortunately, Lin Rufei hadn’t taken it to heart, trusted him unconditionally, and was now helping him.
“Rufei, my feelings for Nanxi aren’t what you think. We”
“I know.” Lin Rufei held his hand, her expression full of affection. “I believe you. You’ve always loved me. Otherwise, why would you have married Nanxi? You look at her every day because you’re thinking of me.”
After saying this, she threw herself into his arms. “Xiaozhe, my biggest regret all these years has been not being with you. Thankfully, heaven has given me this chance. From now on, I’ll cherish it and stay with you forever.”
As Qin Xiaozhe held Lin Rufei, Nanxi’s face surfaced in his mind.
Though she resembled Lin Rufei, somehow the image of her in his mind seemed entirely different from the woman in his arms now.
After seeing Lin Rufei home, she bid farewell to Qin Xiaozhe. Holding hands, their faces filled with reluctance, Lin Rufei seemed to remember something just before leaving and said to Qin Xiaozhe, “About the canceled collaboration, there might be someone who can help us.”
“Who?”
“Miss Nan,” Lin Rufei replied. “Miss Nan is now Mu Yichen’s fiancée. If she finds out that Mu Yichen is protecting Nanxi, she definitely won’t stand for it.”
Qin Xiaozhe nodded in agreement. “But we’ve tried before this Miss Nan refused to see us.”
“Let’s go see her tomorrow. We’ll find a way to meet her somehow.”
Qin Xiaozhe agreed and watched as Lin Rufei got out of the car. Just as he was about to say goodbye, he saw her clutching her stomach, leaning against the doorframe, her face twisted in pain.
“What’s wrong?”
“My stomach hurts a bit.”
“I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Lin Rufei shook her head. “It’s feeling a bit better now. It’s late I’ll go see a doctor tomorrow.”
Reassured, Qin Xiaozhe agreed, and they made plans to visit the doctor together the next day.
At Xiangyuan Villa.
Nanxi looked at the invitation email from the Lin family and turned to Mu Yichen. “The Lin family is getting restless. Mrs. Lin wants to see me.”
Without a second thought, Nanxi guessed their intentions they probably assumed Mu Yichen had targeted them because she had seduced him. So, they wanted to use the eldest daughter of the Nan family to deal with her, hoping to profit from the conflict.
Mu Yichen glanced at the email. “They’ve considered countless possibilities but never guessed that you are the eldest daughter of the Nan family.”
Nanxi smiled and shook her head. It wasn’t that they hadn’t thought of it they just refused to believe it. To both the Lin and Qin families, Nanxi was merely a woman dependent on Qin Xiaozhé. Now that she had left the Qin family, they assumed she had nothing and would have to crawl back to beg him. How could she possibly be the eldest daughter?
“Should I meet them?” Nanxi hesitated.
Mu Yichen understood her thoughts she wanted to see them but was worried about being recognized, which could cause unnecessary trouble and complicate the divorce process.
He came up with an idea. “There’s a charity event the day after tomorrow. Nan Yuan can attend as the host. If the Lin family wants to ask for your help, they’ll have to make some gestures.”
Nanxi understood Mu Yichen’s meaning he intended to make the Lin family pay dearly.
She nodded in agreement. “Alright, let’s do it the day after tomorrow. I want to see just how sincere the Lin family really is.”
But then, Nanxi frowned as if remembering something.
“What’s wrong?” Mu Yichen noticed her concern and asked.
“My brother sold off the family’s collection. We don’t have any particularly valuable items left.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered.” Mu Yichen had already prepared.
Nanxi didn’t stand on ceremony. “Alright, I won’t be polite then. But at the charity event, we might run into Qin Xiaozhé. Will you be upset?”
“Of course,” Mu Yichen replied without hesitation.
Nanxi was taken aback, but then Mu Yichen suddenly smiled. “I’m upset that you’ve been facing everything alone, letting Qin Xiaozhé bully you for so long. From now on, leave these matters to me.”
When Mrs. Lin received the email reply, she was overjoyed and called her daughter over. “Look, the eldest daughter of the Nan family has agreed! She’s invited us to the charity event the day after tomorrow.”
Mrs. Lin grew increasingly animated as she spoke. The eldest daughter of the Nan family rarely made public appearances and had always been shrouded in mystery. She had assumed the email would vanish without a trace, and had even prepared to pay a personal visit the next day. To her surprise, a response had actually come.
She had already envisioned the scenario: once she met the Nan family’s eldest daughter, she would encourage her to befriend her own daughter ideally, to become as close as sisters. That way, the Lin family would gain a powerful ally.
Lin Rufei was equally delighted by the invitation. “This is wonderful, Mom! You’re amazing.”
“Of course,” Mrs. Lin replied confidently. “When the time comes, I’ll make sure you and the Nan family’s eldest daughter become the best of friends. That way, both the Nan and Mu families will become your staunchest supporters.”
