- Chapter 19 - Denying His Love for Her
After downing three consecutive drinks, Qi Zhengchu stopped Qin Xiaozhe.
“Are you insane?”
Qin Xiaozhe shot him a glance, pushed his hand away, and continued drinking.
Seeing that he couldn’t stop him, Qi Zhengchu gave up. “Aren’t you getting married soon? That’s good news, so why don’t you look happy?”
Bang!
The glass slammed heavily onto the counter as Qin Xiaozhe glared angrily. “What does Nanxi mean by this? It’s been so long, and she hasn’t come to find me. I gave her a chance, and she didn’t take it. Now she shows up at the bridal shop to confront me. Is she playing hard to get? What exactly is she trying to do?”
He just couldn’t understand. Nanxi couldn’t let him go, couldn’t live without him so why was she being so stubborn? He wasn’t an unreasonable person. If she would just come back and humble herself a little, he’d naturally give her a way back and accept her again.
But she had to speak so harshly and even bully Rufei, putting him in a difficult position.
Qi Zhengchu, however, found it strange. “Nanxi confronted you at the bridal shop? That doesn’t sound right.”
Over the years, he’d had quite a few interactions with Nanxi, and in his view, she didn’t seem like the type to be so irrational.
“Rufei and I saw it with our own eyes. How could it be fake?”
“Maybe it was just a coincidence.”
“Hah, a bridal shop? If she wasn’t there for me, then what was she doing? Trying on wedding dresses? Who would want her?”
“You’re not falling for Nanxi, are you?” Qi Zhengchu asked.
Qin Xiaozhe laughed. “How is that possible?”
All these years, the only reason he’d been with Nanxi was because of her face. How could he possibly love a substitute?
“If that’s the case, why are you so angry? You only care if you can’t let go. In my opinion, you’ve fallen for Nanxi without even realizing it,” Qi Zhengchu said.
Qin Xiaozhe burst into laughter, then stopped and rolled his eyes at Qi Zhengchu. “Me? Love her?”
“If you don’t love her, why are you so upset? Drowning your sorrows in alcohol?” Qi Zhengchu said. “Anyway, you’re getting a divorce soon. She’ll have nothing to do with you after this. Isn’t that for the best? From now on, you’ll be strangers.”
“She loves me!” Qin Xiaozhe pointed at himself, his voice firm. “She can’t leave me. I’m giving her a chance.”
He was already considering that after marrying Lin Rufei, he would show Nanxi a bit more care. Since she couldn’t live without him, arranging something for her would be a way to make it up to her.
Qi Zhengchu picked up his drink, took a sip, and set it down without looking at Qin Xiaozhe. “She probably wouldn’t appreciate the chance to be the other woman. Brother, no one in this world is truly indispensable. Nanxi treated you well because she loved you before. Now that you’ve hurt her so deeply, it’d be strange if she still treated you well. A woman as good as Nanxi if you don’t cherish her, you’ll regret it one day.”
“Are you speaking up for her?” Qin Xiaozhe asked coldly.
Qi Zhengchu looked at him. “I’m just reminding you. If a woman like Lin Rufei truly loved you, she wouldn’t have left so suddenly back then. Now that she’s divorced, she comes back to you. In her eyes, you might just be a backup. Marrying you isn’t about love it’s because she thinks you’re a suitable fallback. A woman like that, if you marry her, will only bring you trouble. She abandoned you once five years ago; who’s to say she won’t do it again after marriage?”
At these words, Qin Xiaozhe’s anger surged, and he grabbed Qi Zhengchu by the shoulder.
“What did you say? Don’t you dare talk about her like that!”
He had loved Lin Rufei for so many years. Even if she had wronged him, the fact that she had returned now proved that she loved him and couldn’t let him go.
Qi Zhengchu was pinned down by Qin Xiaozhe, his face full of displeasure. “I’m just stating the facts!”
Qin Xiaozhe’s eyes reddened, genuinely angry, and he raised his arm, ready to strike.
“Hey, just in time. A fight, huh?”
The private room door swung open, and a man with tattooed arms walked in. His tall frame leaned halfway against the sofa as he closed his eyes. In the dimly lit room, most of his face was shrouded in shadow handsome yet sinister, exuding a wild and unrestrained beauty, like a finely carved figure on exquisite porcelain.
With someone entering, Qin Xiaozhe halted his movement.
Qi Zhengchu straightened up and looked at Mu Chen. “You’re here.”
“Qi Zhengchu, you’re no good,” Mu Chen said before picking up a liquor bottle and hurling it straight at Qin Xiaozhe.
Qi Zhengchu was his friend, and anyone who dared bully his friend deserved to die, no matter who they were.
Fortunately, Qin Xiaozhe moved swiftly, dodging just enough to avoid a head injury. The bottle shattered on the floor, hitting his foot and making him grimace in pain.
Annoyed that there was no blood, Mu Chen remarked, “A miss. When I strike, it’s either maiming or death.”
He made to stand up and continue the assault, but Qi Zhengchu quickly intervened. “We’re all friends here, just fooling around.”
Only then did Mu Chen relent. “This friend of yours isn’t playing fair.”
Fearing Mu Chen would escalate, Qi Zhengchu spoke up, “It’s all a misunderstanding. Don’t meddle.”
“Life’s boring without meddling,” Mu Chen retorted, casting a cold, sinister glare at Qin Xiaozhe.
Qin Xiaozhe met Mu Chen’s gaze without a trace of fear and asked Qi Zhengchu, “What is he?”
Mu Chen laughed, his cheek pressing against his molars. In that moment, he grabbed another bottle from the table and flung it directly at Qin Xiaozhe.
This time, the bottle struck Qin Xiaozhe squarely on the shoulder. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he prepared to retaliate.
“And what are you?”
Seeing the two about to clash, Qi Zhengchu hurriedly tried to mediate. Mu Chen had a ruthless streak, and while Qin Xiaozhe was in the wrong, he didn’t want a conflict to erupt because of him.
“We’re all friends. For my sake, let it go.The two finally settled down, though the provocation in their eyes remained.
Qi Zhengchu began introducing them. “Qin Xiaozhe, CEO of the Qin Corporation, my buddy.”
Then he introduced Mu Chen. “Mu Chen, younger uncle of Mu Yichen from the Mu Corporation, also known as the Second Young Master of the Mu family. We were college classmates.”
Qin Xiaozhe was taken aback the man before him was actually the Second Young Master of the Mu family.
Some of the anger in his eyes faded, and he extended a hand. “Second Young Master.”
Mu Chen ignored him, sat down, tilted his chin up, and outright dismissed him.
Qin Xiaozhe awkwardly withdrew his hand.
Just as Qin Xiaozhe thought Mu Chen wouldn’t grant him any face, he heard him speak. “There are some nice girls here.”
With that, Mu Chen clapped his hands, and a group of scantily clad women entered. Spotting Mu Chen, they immediately approached, taking turns sitting on his lap and beside him. “Second Young Master, you’re finally here. We’ve missed you.”
Mu Chen pinched one of the women’s breasts, tossed a wad of cash, and said, “Take good care of my friends.”
The women dispersed, settling beside Qin Xiaozhe and Qi Zhengchu.
Qi Zhengchu declined, while Qin Xiaozhe felt somewhat uneasy.
He and Mu Chen had become acquainted through conflict. Refusing his goodwill now would seem ungrateful. Stiffening his back, he made it clear he wasn’t interested.
Mu Chen sneered, “Same old crowd. Bring in another batch.”
However, even after three rounds of replacements, none satisfied him. It wasn’t until a server came in to deliver drinks that Mu Chen’s gaze fell upon the server’s face.
“This face isn’t bad. I want this woman.” As he spoke, he pulled out a stack of cash and placed it in front of the waitress, then wrapped his arm around her.
The waitress screamed, “Let go! Please let me go!”
Daring to resist, Mu Chen grew even more excited. “No one has ever been able to refuse me.”
The waitress began to cry. Qi Zhengchu stepped in to intervene, while Qin Xiaozhe silently watched.
“Don’t interfere with my fun,” Mu Chen warned Qi Zhengchu.
Seeing herself sinking deeper into trouble, the girl seized the moment when Mu Chen was off guard, grabbed a fruit knife from the table, and pressed it against her own neck. “Stay back.”
But Mu Chen remained unfazed. “I don’t believe you’d actually do it. Go ahead, die for me. If you don’t, it won’t be over.”
Left with no choice, the girl closed her eyes and slashed the knife forcefully across her neck.
Just as Mu Yi Chen entered, he saw the girl’s hands covered in blood, while Mu Chen stared in shock at the scene.
