- Chapter 18 - Personal Escort
Mu Yichen merely glanced briefly before turning to leave.
Qin Xiaozhe intended to greet him, but before he could take a step, he saw the other man withdraw his gaze and walk away. Stunned, Qin Xiaozhe watched Mu Yichen’s retreating figure, his mind filled with confusion.
“Could it be that President Mu brought his fiancée here today to try on wedding dresses? It seems the news of his marriage to the eldest daughter of the Nan family is true. Wonderful, I’ll get to meet the Nan family’s eldest daughter today.”
Lin Rufei was overjoyed.
She had always heard about this eldest daughter of the Nan family but had never seen her in person. Now, she was eagerly looking forward to meeting her and exchanging greetings. What a fortunate coincidence that they were getting married on the same day! She even hoped to become friends with this Miss Nan.
Though both were heirs to wealthy families, Miss Nan was different from her. The Nan family’s assets were spread across the entire country, with plans to expand globally, while the Lin family was only prominent in Nan City. Outside of Nan City, no one knew what the Lin Corporation was.
If she could befriend such a genuine socialite, that would be absolutely wonderful.
However, after waiting for a while, there was no sign of the Nan family’s eldest daughter, nor did anyone come to try on wedding dresses.
Lin Rufei was baffled. “Did President Mu come alone?”
Qin Xiaozhe shot her a glance. “Take your time searching. If we can establish a connection with the Nan family, it will only benefit us.”
Lin Rufei nodded, planning to ask the hall manager for information about Miss Nan. If she could befriend the Nan family’s eldest daughter, her own social standing would be greatly elevated in the future.
After leaving the bridal shop, Mu Yichen was about to look for Nanxi when he saw her approach a watermelon stall. She handed over the loudspeaker she was holding, placed down some money, waved, and walked away.
“Did they bully you?” Mu Yichen walked over and stood beside Nanxi.
Nanxi got into the car and let out a cold laugh. “In the past, they bullied me because I still cared. Now, they don’t have that ability anymore.”
In her eyes, Qin Xiaozhe was nothing but garbage. She couldn’t be bothered with him and wouldn’t give him any opportunity to bully her. Whatever he said, she no longer cared to listen. Without any harm inflicted, the only one getting angry would be himself.
Mu Yichen knew all along that his Nanxi would never allow herself to be bullied. Watching her pout with that fearless expression, the image of the little girl who had protected Nan Xu and him nine years ago surfaced in his mind.
She had finally returned.
Unable to resist, he reached out and ruffled her hair, then smiled. “You’re amazing.”
Startled by his gesture, Nanxi turned her head and met his radiant gaze. After a moment of surprise, her expression softened, and she smiled. “Don’t worry, who do you think I am? No one would dare bully me.”
Mu Yichen chuckled and reluctantly withdrew his hand. “Did you like the wedding dress from earlier?”
“Of course,” Nanxi replied. “Did you prepare it especially for me?”
Mu Yichen didn’t deny it. “Yes.”
It seemed he had started preparing it right after she agreed to the marriage alliance. With such thoughtfulness, how could Nanxi not be moved?
Qin Xiaozhe had never given her the wedding she had hoped for, and she had thought she would never get to wear a wedding dress in this lifetime. Yet now,
She had intended to say thank you, but remembering Mu Yichen’s words that there was no need for formalities between them, she swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue and instead said, “You put a lot of thought into it. The wedding dress is even more beautiful than I imagined. I really like it.”
As long as she liked it, everything was worth it.
“I’ll take you back.”
On the way back, Nanxi relaxed considerably, and their conversation shifted from work projects to life after marriage.
Listening to Nanxi’s words, Mu Yichen silently took note, planning to arrange everything she mentioned one by one.
After dropping Nanxi off at Xiangyuan Villa, Mu Yichen did not go inside. Standing at the door, he bid her farewell, “I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”
The drive from the Mu residence to Xiangyuan Villa took forty minutes, and such a commute seemed rather time-consuming. Nanxi could easily drive herself, so she said, “There’s no need; it’s too much trouble for you.”
“Picking you up for work isn’t a hassle for me it’s a joy,” Mu Yichen replied with a smile.
There was one thing he hadn’t told her: the old master opposed this marriage and might cause trouble. It would be safer for him to personally escort Nanxi to and from work.
Seeing his insistence, Nanxi didn’t refuse further. “Then, see you tomorrow.”
Mu Yichen stepped forward, gently pulling Nanxi into an embrace. Reluctantly parting, he watched her leave. “See you tomorrow.”
Only after seeing Nanxi enter her home did Mu Yichen prepare to get into his car, but before he could, he received a call from the main family residence.
The smile on his face instantly froze.
“Yichen, the daughter of a friend is visiting our home. When will you be back?” It was his mother’s voice.
Mu Yichen’s expression turned cold, his voice suppressing anger. “Is this the old master’s idea?”
“You’re not young anymore; it’s time to settle down. Your grandfather means well,” Xia Dan tried to persuade him.
“Mom, have you forgotten how Dad died?”
“Yichen!”
“I already have someone I’m going to marry. We’re getting married in half a month. I don’t need him making arrangements for me.”
“Your grandfather won’t agree.”
“My lifelong matters don’t require his approval!”
With that, Mu Yichen hung up the phone.
The old master couldn’t wait any longer and had already started arranging marriages for him, even dragging his mother into it.
Sitting in the car, the glow of his cigarette flickering in the dim light, he dialed Hou Jian’s number.
“President Mu.”
“Arrange for a few people to discreetly protect Nanxi.”
“Yes.”
“The old master won’t stay quiet. If he wants to involve more people, then let’s give him something to be unhappy about.”
“President Mu, what are you planning?”
Mu Yichen stubbed out his cigarette and asked, “Where is Mu Chen?”
“I’ll check immediately.”
Five minutes later, Hou Jian replied, “Second Young Master Mu is at Golden Years.”
“Head to Golden Years.”
Lin Rufei couldn’t find Miss Nan. The lobby manager refused to disclose any client information, and Lin Rufei argued with him, trying to pressure him with her status as the eldest daughter of the Lin family. However, the lobby manager showed no fear.
Whether it was the Mu family or the Nan family, the lobby manager couldn’t afford to offend either. As for the insignificant Lin family, he paid them no mind.
After causing a scene, the owner of the bridal shop was alerted. The owner made it clear that the Lin family’s young lady would no longer be served and politely escorted her out.
Lin Rufei’s neck flushed with anger.
“What’s so great about them? There are plenty of bridal shops. Not taking my business is their loss. A shop with such poor judgment will close sooner or later.”
Qin Xiaozhe frowned, his face full of displeasure.
As the president of the Qin Corporation, he had never been so humiliated being thrown out and refused service.
To make matters worse, Lin Rufei kept complaining incessantly, “I’m going to report them and ruin their business. Xiaozhe, have Luo Rongfei arrange it so they can’t keep operating.”
“Enough,” Qin Xiaozhe said irritably. “If this shop won’t take us, we’ll find another one.”
“This is not the same thing. They bullied me, and I want payback. I’m your fiancee if they bully me, they’re disrespecting you. Are you really going to stand by and watch me get bullied without standing up for me?”
Qin Xiaozhe grew increasingly irritated by the pressure. Just then, his phone rang. He answered it directly and said to Lin Rufe, “I have something to attend to. Go back by yourself.”
Qin Xiaozhe left while still on the call.
After getting into the car, he hung up the work-related call and sighed. His mind was filled with Nanxi’s disdainful gaze and Lin Rufe’s complaints. The more he thought about it, the more his head ached. He dialed Qi Zhengchu and said, “Let’s grab a drink. Meet me at Golden Years.”
