- Chapter 14 - Unleashing Power
Qin Xiaozhe looked at Lin Rufei with deep disappointment. Only now did he understand why Nanxi had been so let down by him she had known all along, had heard his words with her own ears, and seen the engagement photos with her own eyes. No wonder she had been inexplicably angry. So that was it.
Lin Rufei never expected Nanxi to send all this evidence to Qin Xiaozhe. After cursing Nanxi countless times in her heart, she immediately stepped forward, grabbing Qin Xiaozhe’s arm. Meeting his furious gaze, she tried to explain, “Xiaozhe, it’s not like that. I did it because I love you. I don’t want to share you with anyone. Everything I did was out of love for you. I really didn’t mean any harm.” As she spoke, tears began to fall.
In the past, seeing her cry would have prompted Qin Xiaozhe to comfort her immediately. But now, faced with the woman who had deceived him all along, his expression remained cold and stern. “It seems I’ve been spoiling you too much,” he said, then turned and walked away without looking back.
“It’s not like that, Xiaozhe! I did it because I love you! Qin Xiaozhe, come back!” Lin Rufei shouted, pointing at him as if issuing a command. Yet Qin Xiaozhe didn’t turn around. “Nanxi, just you wait!” she seethed.
After a day of rest, Nanxi finally felt recovered enough to meet Zhao Dong. Mu Yichen offered to accompany her, but she declined. The matters she needed to discuss with Zhao Dong concerned her family’s company, and she was no longer the naive young lady she once was. She knew how to handle herself.
Nanxi reserved a private room and was led inside by a server. Zhao Dong had been waiting for some time and greeted her warmly as she entered. “President Nan, it’s good to finally meet you.” Nanxi extended her hand for a handshake, and they entered the room together, closing the door behind them.
Unbeknownst to her, someone was following her. Seeing her enter the private room with Zhao Dong, the person immediately took out their phone and made a call. “Xiaozhe, I know you’re still angry with me, but I have something very important to tell you it’s about Nanxi. I’ll send you the address.”
Nanxi had no idea she was being watched. Meeting Zhao Dong filled her with excitement, and she expressed her gratitude. “President Zhao, I must thank you. If it weren’t for you finding Mu Yichen, I wouldn’t have been able to free myself from that situation.” Her words hinted at some difficulty she had faced, but Zhao Dong didn’t pry, simply smiling and waving it off. “You’re too kind, President Nan.”
Zhao Dong was exceptionally capable, and Nanxi had always held a favorable impression of him. After this interaction, she felt even more assured of his reliability. She didn’t beat around the bush and directly discussed work and salary details.
Zhao Dong had no objections to any of the terms, except for one condition: “Since you’re appointing me as CEO of Nanyuan, I demand full decision-making authority within my role.” Hearing this, Nanxi understood why he had left the Lin Corporation. The request was reasonable and beneficial for the company’s growth. Trusting in his abilities, she agreed without hesitation. “No problem.”
With everything settled, they shook hands to seal the deal. Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and Qin Xiaozhe stormed in. Seeing Nanxi holding hands with a middle-aged man, he rushed over and pulled her away abruptly. “What are you doing?”
Startled by Qin Xiaozhe’s sudden appearance, Nanxi froze for a moment. Noticing the fury in his eyes, she found it utterly baffling. She withdrew her hand and retorted, “Qin Xiaozhe, what I do is my own business. What does it have to do with you?”
“I am your husband! Who is he?” Qin Xiaozhe pointed at Zhao Dong. “No wonder you didn’t want to come back. Even if you’re trying to provoke me on purpose, you didn’t have to find some old man like him!”
“What are you talking about? Who’s trying to provoke you? I was just ”
“A few days ago, you even had Mu Yichen pretend to be your fiancé. How could someone like President Mu ever be interested in you?”
Nanxi felt utterly speechless.
She had met Zhao Dong to discuss a collaboration, but Qin Xiaozhe made it sound so sordid.
She never expected that, after all these years, this was how he saw her in his eyes.
“Qin Xiaozhe, who do you think you are? What does my business have to do with you? What right do you have to slander me here?”
“Slander?” Qin Xiaozhe shot a sidelong glance at Zhao Dong. “I saw it with my own eyes. You’re deliberately getting close to another man to make me angry. Well, let me tell you, you’ve succeeded!”
Nanxi thought he was being unreasonable. “Are you insane?”
As the two argued relentlessly, Zhao Dong stepped in to explain, “President Qin, you’ve misunderstood. Miss Nan and I were only discussing a collaboration.”
Qin Xiaozhe didn’t believe him and stared fixedly at Nanxi.
Lin Rufei’s gaze fell on Zhao Dong’s face. “That’s a laughable thing to say, Zhao Dong. You’ve already been fired from our Mu Corporation, and Nanxi is just an ordinary project manager. What kind of collaboration requires you to be tugging and pulling in a private room?”
After saying this, Lin Rufei turned to Nanxi. “Nanxi, this Mr. Zhao used to be a vice president at our Mu Corporation, quite wealthy. But now, he’s been dismissed and is unemployed. If you stick with him, I’m afraid you won’t gain anything.”
“Shut your filthy mouth. Don’t assume everyone is like you, only seeing profit and sleeping around,” Nanxi retorted immediately.
“You!” Lin Rufei was fuming.
Zhao Dong didn’t hold back either. “Lin Rufei, you know exactly why I was fired. If you force me to spell it out, you’ll be the one embarrassed.”
Lin Rufei’s eyes darted nervously, and she turned to Qin Xiaozhe. “Xiaozhe, maybe we should just go. It might be a misunderstanding.”
But Qin Xiaozhe was too angry to leave. He grabbed Nanxi’s arm. “Come back with me. Putting on a show with someone like this is just humiliating me.”
Nanxi struggled as Qin Xiaozhe pulled her.
Zhao Dong stepped forward to help.
Once free, Nanxi pointed at Qin Xiaozhe and angrily retorted, “You’re the one with no standards, willing to take on any woman. The moment Lin Rufei returned to the country, you happily became her rebound. How dare you criticize me? We’re done. What I do has nothing to do with you, and I don’t owe you any explanations.”
Qin Xiaozhe’s chest heaved with rage, especially when he saw Nanxi’s attitude toward him. It left a bitter taste in his heart. She used to have eyes only for him, but now, her gaze held no trace of attachment.
Could it be that she really didn’t care about him anymore?
He decided to compromise. “I don’t care what’s going on between you two. If you’re doing this to provoke me, you’ve succeeded. Come back with me, and I’ll pretend nothing happened. I won’t hold it against you.”
But Nanxi laughed. “Qin Xiaozhe, you think too highly of yourself. Right now, in my eyes, you’re nothing.”
Qin Xiaozhe’s anger surged, especially when he heard Nan Xi’s subsequent words. He felt as if he were going insane, and his own words turned utterly vile. “Rufei told me you went into a private room with a man. I took you home out of pity, but now it seems you’re just cheap yourself, willing to be with such a man for money. It looks like you were only with me for money from the start.”
Noticing the look of hatred in Qin Xiaozhe’s eyes as he glared at Nan Xi, Lin Rufei smirked sideways.
As long as Qin Xiaozhe was disappointed in Nan Xi, he would obediently love her in the future.
Just as Lin Rufei was secretly gloating, with a crash, the dishes on the table were abruptly overturned, splattering all over her and Qin Xiaozhe.
“Ah!” Lin Rufei screamed as a plate hit her foot, leaving her covered in filth.
Seeing the scene before him, Qin Xiaozhe roared furiously, “Nanxi, what are you doing!”
She had clearly done something wrong, yet she was still causing a scene here.
Nanxi snorted coldly, tossed the tablecloth aside, and shot Qin Xiaozhe and Lin Rufei a disdainful glare. They thought she was easy to bully just because she hadn’t shown her temper? “The filthy-minded see filth everywhere.”
