You Are the Star I Cannot Touch - Chapter 37
Chapter 37: The Promise
A loud rumble of thunder scared Mù Yán awake.
It was thundering. Mù Yán’s face was pale. She got out of bed, burrowed into Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s quilt, tightly hugging her, her head buried in Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s chest, trembling.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng was also awakened by the thunder, but she didn’t expect Mù Yán to actually crawl into her bed.
“You’re afraid of thunder.”
“Mhm,” Mù Yán hugged her tightly. “Afraid.”
A piercing phone ringtone sounded. Mù Yán realized it was her phone, but she didn’t dare to get it.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng turned on her bedside lamp, got up, retrieved the phone, and handed it to her, then lay back down, letting Mù Yán hold her tightly.
Chī Yuè looked at the rain outside the window. Tonight’s thunder was unusually loud. “Are you alright?”
Mù Yán was holding Gōng Yǔ Tóng. “I’m fine.” Her voice was much steadier.
Chī Yuè confirmed she hadn’t called the wrong person; her voice didn’t sound that scared. “Really okay? Do you need me to come over to keep you company? Or should I chat with you?”
“I’m fine. Yǔ Tóng is with me. I’m okay hugging her.”
Chī Yuè paused. “Are you talking about the Gōng family’s eldest daughter?”
“Mhm, Yuè’er, you don’t have to worry. I’m fine. She’s so good to me. I’ll take you to meet her this weekend.”
Could the rumors be false? But as long as she was okay. “Alright, then get some sleep. Call me if anything happens.”
“Mhm, goodnight.”
“Mhm.” Chī Yuè hung up, feeling somewhat puzzled. Mù Yán’s voice was full of a slight coquettishness. It seemed she really needed to meet her this weekend. In just a few days, Mù Yán seemed to have changed.
“My friend. I’m taking you to meet her this weekend. My only friend.” Mù Yán shifted to using Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s arm as a pillow.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s ear tickled. Mù Yán was too close. Not only did her ear tickle, but her whole body felt numb. She didn’t know what this feeling was; it was somewhat annoying.
“Sleep,” she closed her eyes.
“Mhm,” Mù Yán also closed her eyes.
Outside, the wind was still howling, lightning was flashing, and the rain was relentless, but Mù Yán slept very soundly that night.
Right after school on Friday, Mù Yán grabbed Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s hand. “Uh… are you going home? If not, come meet my friend with me. I promised her I’d take you.” Her eyes were full of anticipation as she looked at her.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng originally didn’t want to agree, but thinking of her headache-inducing younger brother at home, she said, “Okay.”
“That’s great, let’s go.” Mù Yán pulled her out of the school gate and saw Chī Yuè waiting for her in the distance. She pulled Gōng Yǔ Tóng and ran over. “Yuè’er, this is Yǔ Tóng, the Gōng family’s eldest daughter. She’s even more beautiful than a goddess.”
Chī Yuè saw that Mù Yán was incredibly happy, and there was a hint of coquettishness and pride when she spoke of Gōng Yǔ Tóng. In just one short week, she was smiling and had changed—that was good.
“Chī Yuè.” Chī Yuè looked at the person the rumors called the Gōng family’s eldest daughter. She was just as the rumors described: equally cold and unbelievably beautiful.
“Gōng Yǔ Tóng.”
“Let’s go,” Mù Yán pulled Gōng Yǔ Tóng into the car. “It’s a bit far.”
“Where are we going?” She asked, even though Chī Yuè had already started the car.
“The place where the two of us live. Don’t be mad. Since you’re not going home anyway, come to my place,” she hadn’t told her where they were going beforehand, fearing she might refuse.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng didn’t speak.
“You’re not mad, right?” Mù Yán asked cautiously, observing her expression, but unfortunately, she couldn’t read anything.
“No.”
“I knew you were the best!” Mù Yán held her hand. “What do you want to eat in a bit?”
“Anything is fine,” she felt the soft hand in hers.
Chī Yuè parked the car in the garage. They took the elevator up. Chī Yuè opened the door to a newly purchased apartment with three bedrooms, one living room, one bathroom, and one kitchen.
“We…” Mù Yán paused. “Neither of us knows how to cook, it seems. Let’s order takeout.” She took out her phone to order. “Crayfish, barbecue. I’ve been craving these for days.”
Chī Yuè poured two cups of yogurt and handed one to Gōng Yǔ Tóng and one to Mù Yán.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng looked around. Everything was new. It must have been bought before Mù Yán transferred.
After the takeout arrived, Mù Yán peeled a shrimp and directly stuffed it into Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s mouth, not caring if she wanted to eat it or not, forcefully feeding her.
Chī Yuè watched, feeling a little sour inside; her friend was peeling shrimp for someone else.
“Yuè’er, here,” Mù Yán handed a peeled shrimp to Chī Yuè, then continued to peel one and personally feed it to Gōng Yǔ Tóng.
“I won’t eat anymore, you eat,” she kept peeling for her but didn’t eat herself.
“Really? Then I’ll eat.” Mù Yán peeled one for herself.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng watched, reached out, put on gloves, peeled a few, and placed them in her hand.
“Thank you,” Mù Yán gave her a sweet smile. A lot of shrimp was placed in her hand. She looked at Gōng Yǔ Tóng’s long, slender fingers with distinct joints. This hand was so beautiful, the kind you only see in anime, so agile.
“What’s wrong with my hand?” Gōng Yǔ Tóng finished peeling the last few and placed them in her hand.
“It’s beautiful. Everything about you is beautiful,” she looked at her with a dazed admiration.
“Hurry up and eat,” she took off her gloves.
“Mhm, mhm. This fish tofu is delicious. Want to try?” She handed it to her. “I love it. I don’t know if you do.”
“Mhm,” she took it and bit into it. It was slightly numbing and spicy, but okay.
“I noticed you don’t seem to like spicy food much, so I ordered mild spice for everything.”
Gōng Yǔ Tóng glanced at her but didn’t say anything.
Chī Yuè also glanced at Mù Yán, noticing the tone of coquettishness and a hint of shyness and affection she wasn’t even aware of. Sure enough, good looks attracted everyone.
Knock, knock The sound of knocking rang out.
Mù Yán and Chī Yuè were both stunned because they didn’t expect anyone to come looking for them, and they didn’t know anyone here.
Chī Yuè opened the door. “You?”
“We’re looking for the Young Miss.” The bodyguard came in and saw Gōng Yǔ Tóng. “Young Miss.” How should he start?
“What is it?” Gōng Yǔ Tóng showed no expression, but she already knew what he was looking for her about.
“Young Miss, the Young Master… he… he’s crying to see you. He didn’t find you at the school gate and is still crying there. We can’t console him. Sir and Madam have no way either. He won’t go home until he sees you.”
Gōng Yǔ Tóng: “…”
She was truly tormented by her younger brother. Shouldn’t children cling to their parents? Her brother, however, clung to her, which was why she didn’t want to go home, avoiding it every Friday. But… he somehow found her wherever she hid, and then he would cry.
“Young Miss, why don’t you…” The bodyguard silently dialed the phone. “You…” Before he could finish, a wailing sound came from the other side.
“Ah… Big Sis,” Gōng Shǎo Yǔ cried breathlessly. “Big Sis, don’t you want me anymore? Waaah…” His crying was utterly miserable.
Shěn Mèng felt like crying too. They couldn’t console him. Last night, he was so excited that his sister was coming back that he couldn’t sleep. He went to pick her up, and when he couldn’t find her, he started crying. They were helpless.
“Yǔ Tóng, hurry up and come over. If this continues, your brother will collapse, sigh…” Was this really her son?
“Big… Big Sis… where did you go? I’ll be obedient from now on, okay, Sis? I miss you,” all snot and tears.
Gōng Zé held his head. What a disaster. They had a child late in life, but the child wasn’t close to them, only to this cold sister. They couldn’t even console him.
“Shut up,” Gōng Yǔ Tóng was annoyed by the crying.
“Sis…” Gōng Shǎo Yǔ immediately stopped crying. “Sis, Sis, where are you? Sis, waaah… Sis.” He started again.
Gōng Yǔ Tóng rubbed her forehead. It was truly a headache.
“I’ll be home in half an hour.”
“Really, Sis? Okay, I’ll go back right away. Mom, Dad, hurry up, my sister is coming back. Sis!” His eyes were swollen and red, but he was happy like a fool.
“Drive,” Gōng Zé sighed in relief. Finally, some peace and quiet.
The bodyguard left, naturally waiting outside the complex.
“Are you okay?” Mù Yán looked at her with bright eyes, wanting to laugh. Why was her brother such a stark contrast to her? “Your brother really likes you.”
“If you like him, I’ll give him to you,” she didn’t want him. At this rate, she wouldn’t live past thirty.
“No, no… So, are you leaving now?” She didn’t want her to leave. She had planned to have her stay the night and go out together tomorrow. After all, she wasn’t familiar with this area, but Mù Yán was.
“Mhm.”
“Okay then. Do you have time tomorrow?”
“What’s up?”
“I… I’m not familiar with this area and want to go out and look around. Can you come with me?” she asked cautiously, yet her face was full of expectation.
“What time?”
“How about you come over at ten, and we can eat and then go out?”
“Good,” Gōng Yǔ Tóng got up.
“I’ll walk you out.” Mù Yán took her hand and walked her to the gate of the complex, watching her get into the car and drive away.
Feeling quite reluctant and disappointed, she returned to her apartment.
The next day, Mù Yán deliberately picked a particularly beautiful dress and made sure to consult Chī Yuè for a long time on which one looked best. After getting ready, she waited for Gōng Yǔ Tóng. When it was 9:50, and she hadn’t arrived, Mù Yán felt a little disappointed.
“Yuè’er, do you think she won’t come? After all… I forgot she’s the Gōng family’s eldest daughter. How could she possibly come out with me after just one week?”
Chī Yuè looked at her, quite perplexed. Why was she so worried? She wasn’t like this when they were separated, and she felt something was off.
It was 10:01, and Mù Yán’s mood dropped further.
Knock, knock Mù Yán quickly got up to open the door, but it was a delivery person. Her mood sank even lower, and she couldn’t stop her tears; they fell one by one.
“Don’t cry. If she doesn’t come, I’ll take you out,” Chī Yuè fetched a tissue. She didn’t cry after all that happened, but she cried because Gōng Yǔ Tóng didn’t come. Perhaps she just needed an outlet for her emotions.
Knock, knock The knocking sounded again. Mù Yán didn’t dare to open the door, afraid of getting excited for nothing, but… she was also afraid it might be her. With this conflicting feeling, she opened the door.
