You Are My Omega - Chapter 90
“Xu Shijiu, do you even know what you just picked?”
Xu Shijiu raised what she was holding, clearly unconvinced. “What else could it be? If it’s growing in the field, it must be something edible!”
Lin Xinyi was completely speechless. She quickly stopped her just as she was about to reach out again. “That’s not a vegetable! It’s a weed. You can’t eat it. Just because it’s growing in the field doesn’t mean it’s all food.”
“Weeds compete with the crops for nutrients in the soil. What’s the point of picking them? You’re not seriously planning to eat this, are you?”
Xu Shijiu bit her lip, refusing to give up. “Maybe you’re the one who’s wrong.”
Lin Xinyi laughed. “Me? Wrong?”
“There’s no way I’d mistake them.”
She wasn’t some pampered heiress. When she was very young, she had learned how to help her father around the house. By the time she was in kindergarten, she already knew how to buy groceries on her own. True, after moving into the Xu family, she hadn’t needed to go to the market anymore, but she still knew what vegetables looked like. She was confident she could tell them apart.
“If you don’t believe me, ask the cameraman,” she added, glancing at the man who had been following them with a camera since they left the house.
“Are these all weeds?” Xu Shijiu asked reluctantly, holding up the half-filled basket.
“Yes, every single one,” Lin Xinyi confirmed, amused. Of all the plots available, Xu Shijiu had managed to pick one overgrown with weeds and collected nothing useful.
“Over there is scallion. That’s cabbage. And that’s napa cabbage…” Lin Xinyi began pointing and explaining.
Xu Shijiu’s expression didn’t change, but she had clearly given up trying to distinguish anything. Her initial effort to identify plants faded completely, and Lin Xinyi’s explanations went in one ear and out the other. She had zero interest in memorizing any of it.
“Aren’t they all just green leaves?” Xu Shijiu mumbled once Lin Xinyi finally stopped talking.
Lin Xinyi gave her an exasperated look, realizing all her explanations had been wasted. Seeing Xu Shijiu’s clueless expression, she could only smile helplessly. “From now on, you’re not picking vegetables unless I come with you.”
“What if I’m not around? What are you going to do then?”
It was just a casual comment, a passing remark.
But it struck something deep inside Xu Shijiu.
What would she do without Lin Xinyi?
She had thought she was doing fine during the three years Lin Xinyi was gone. But once Lin Xinyi returned, she realized those years were empty. Her sister had been right when she said she had been nothing more than a walking corpse.
“You like cabbage, right? Pick two heads and I’ll stir-fry them for you tonight. And grab a couple of scallions. Also…” Lin Xinyi began giving directions from the edge of the field.
She wanted to help, but with the uncertainty about her body’s condition, she had to be cautious. She needed to go to the hospital soon to confirm what she suspected.
Xu Shijiu didn’t question why Lin Xinyi wasn’t helping in the field. She simply assumed that, as an Omega, Lin Xinyi didn’t have the strength for this kind of work. Harvesting vegetables was something an Alpha should handle anyway.
Once they’d gathered enough, the two of them strolled back to the house. That place, for now, could be called their home.
The cameraman followed them the entire time, watching silently as an Alpha walked ahead while the Omega followed leisurely behind. He had already lost count of how many times he asked himself, Is this even still a variety show? Wasn’t Xu Corporation just using them to film a documentary about their family life?
Even though he kept grumbling internally, the cameraman still did his job professionally, remembering Xu Manyue’s instructions to try and help spark some chemistry between Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi.
“Miss Xu, Miss Lin, this won’t do,” he said, putting down the camera. Both women paused and turned to look at him with confused expressions.
“What won’t do?” Xu Shijiu asked, amused. She had never taken this so-called show seriously. No matter what her sister claimed, she was sure this wasn’t going to be broadcast anyway.
“Well…” the cameraman faltered. Xu Shijiu’s question left him tongue-tied, and he didn’t dare meet her sharp gaze. Instead, he glanced at Lin Xinyi for help.
He hadn’t expected her to be just as intimidating as her sister. He had assumed Xu Shijiu would be the more approachable one, but clearly, that wasn’t the case. Both of them were terrifying. No wonder they were sisters.
Lin Xinyi wasn’t sure she could change Xu Shijiu’s mind, but she had to try. She tugged lightly on the sleeve of Xu Shijiu’s shirt and gave her a sweet, coaxing smile. “Don’t scare her. She’s just doing her job.”
She felt nervous. She wasn’t sure if Xu Shijiu would still respond to her the way she used to.
“What is it? Speak quickly,” Xu Shijiu said at last.
She wasn’t giving in because of Lin Xinyi’s charm. It was the pale look on Lin Xinyi’s face that made her uneasy.
She had told Lin Xinyi to rest early the night before. But today, her complexion was still just as pale. That meant it wasn’t due to the flight or being tired. Then why?
Xu Shijiu wasn’t a doctor. She didn’t know what to make of it.
The difference in her tone when speaking to Lin Xinyi versus the cameraman was obvious. The cameraman felt a rush of emotion and excitement, practically fangirling inside her own head.
“I was wondering,” the cameraman said carefully, “could the two of you… walk back holding hands?”
“Why?” Xu Shijiu asked bluntly, not understanding why this was necessary.
Lin Xinyi’s smile faded. She lowered her head, and the hand she had just started to raise hung awkwardly in mid-air.
She had wanted to hold Xu Shijiu’s hand. Just imagining it made her heart race. But Xu Shijiu didn’t want to.
Thinking back, they had held hands before, but times when their fingers were truly interlaced had been painfully rare.
“We’re recording a variety show here. It needs highlights and memorable moments. The way you two are just doing whatever you want makes our job really difficult,” the camerawoman said, her tone perfectly dramatic, as if performing on stage.
“This show is actually going to be broadcast?” Xu Shijiu asked, feigning surprise. Out of the corner of her eye, she sneaked a look at Lin Xinyi’s reaction.
“Of course it’s going to be broadcast,” the camerawoman replied seriously.
Truthfully, she wasn’t certain herself. But certainty didn’t matter right now. Xu Manyue had told them clearly: if they could help bring Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu together, they’d receive a massive bonus and even an invitation to their wedding.
“Well then…”
Just as Xu Shijiu seemed about to say something, Lin Xinyi suddenly reached out and took hold of her empty hand.
Her heartbeat, already fast, skyrocketed instantly.
Xu Shijiu stared blankly at the soft, slender fingers now interlocked with hers, then looked ahead at Lin Xinyi who was leading her forward. A surge of indescribable emotion welled up in her chest.
So many times, from the past to now, it had always been Lin Xinyi who reached for her hand first. And she… she had gone from resisting, to slowly accepting, to finally never wanting to let go.
Xu Shijiu had once believed they would walk through life hand in hand forever. But they had ended up spending three years apart.
For Lin Xinyi, taking initiative had now become the most important thing.
Only by taking the first step could she stop Xu Shijiu from turning away again before she had the chance to do anything, before she could even try.
This time together was rare, a precious opportunity her sister had fought for. She wasn’t going to waste it.
Xu Shijiu didn’t know how hard it was for an Omega to steady her hands, to hide the trembling, to stop Xu Shijiu from noticing her nerves.
But neither of them realized that the other’s hand was trembling too.
Because their own hands were already shaking slightly.
The sun wasn’t too strong that day. The weather was warm and pleasant. The Alpha and Omega walked slowly down the stone path, hand in hand. Maybe they walked slowly because they didn’t want to stumble, or maybe they just didn’t want this moment to end too soon.
The camerawoman, hidden behind her equipment, had a soft, fond smile on her face.
Watching two beautiful women walk slowly and gently hand in hand was far more delightful than any of the shows she usually filmed.
That very evening, a photo of Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu walking hand in hand made headlines. It shot straight to the top of the trending searches.
“Didn’t you say you had already used the Xu family’s influence to monitor this entire area? That nothing would leak?” Xu Shijiu was confused. The photo was a little blurry, but clearly showed her and Lin Xinyi.
“I don’t know how this happened,” Xu Manyue replied.
“Liar.” Xu Shijiu didn’t believe it for a second.
“I really didn’t,” Xu Manyue said, trying to look innocent.
But Xu Shijiu wasn’t so easily fooled anymore. “If it wasn’t you, then who else? People in the Xu family wouldn’t dare leak anything unless you gave permission. They’re not freeloaders. If you don’t approve, they won’t act.”
She was almost certain her sister had intentionally arranged for the photo to be released.
“Xu Shijiu, don’t be like this. It was me. I asked your sister to do it,” Lin Xinyi quickly jumped in to stop the argument. Or rather, what was shaping up to be Xu Shijiu arguing while Xu Manyue sat calmly, completely unaffected.
“That’s impossible,” Xu Shijiu said firmly, without the slightest hesitation.
“It’s true. I want my fans to know. I want the whole world to know,” Lin Xinyi said, looking into her eyes, “that I, Lin Xinyi, am chasing after you.”
