You Are My Omega - Chapter 89
Xu Shijiu had begun to wonder if her sister simply had too much money and was looking for a way to spend it. Otherwise, why would she go out of her way to create a variety show like this? After the director and crew installed dozens of cameras around the house, they disappeared without a trace. Ignoring the cameras, the whole setup felt more like a countryside retreat than a professional recording.
“Why are you pacing back and forth like that?” Xu Manyue asked irritably as she watched Xu Shijiu walk past her for what seemed like the hundredth time.
“Why do you care?” Xu Shijiu grumbled, holding her stomach.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Xu Shijiu bit her lip before answering softly, “I’m hungry.”
“If you’re hungry, just ask the housekeeper to make something for you,” Xu Manyue started, but then stopped halfway. She realized they were no longer at home, and there was no housekeeper here.
Xu Shijiu looked completely defeated and muttered under her breath, “What was wrong with staying home? Why go through all this trouble?”
Just then, Lin Xinyi came downstairs and overheard the complaint. She smiled, knowing that if her sister had not insisted on doing this, they would not have had this rare chance to be together.
She quickened her pace toward the kitchen, and as she passed Xu Shijiu, she said calmly, “I’ll cook something for you.”
Xu Shijiu immediately stopped pacing. Lin Xinyi’s offer felt like someone had pressed pause on her restless energy. In an instant, she went completely still.
“Finally, she stopped moving,” Xu Manyue commented with a smile. “Watching her wear out the floor like that was exhausting.”
This time, Xu Shijiu did not argue. She stood quietly for a moment before sitting down on the sofa. You could hardly tell she had just been restlessly walking around from hunger.
Not long after, Liu Lingyan also came downstairs. She walked directly into the kitchen without hesitation. Neither of the Alphas knew how to cook. Xu Manyue could manage some basic dishes, but it had been so long since she last cooked that her skills had probably faded.
Now, the living room was completely quiet. The only sounds came from the kitchen where the two Omegas worked together, chatting softly while preparing breakfast.
The contrast was stark. The living room was silent and tense, while the kitchen was lively and warm.
Before long, breakfast was ready. When Xu Shijiu and Xu Manyue walked over to look, they saw the table filled with dishes they both loved.
“This is all we had in the pantry,” Liu Lingyan explained as she held up a small card she had almost thrown away. “It says from now on we’ll need to gather vegetables from the fields or trade them for meat and other ingredients.”
“Then why did you make so much? Wouldn’t it have been better to save some for later?” Xu Manyue said, although she was already sitting down beside the dishes Liu Lingyan had made.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” Lin Xinyi replied with a smile. “If we eat well now, we’ll have more energy to deal with the food situation later.”
She glanced at Xu Shijiu, who was quietly drinking the porridge she had specially made. The sight of it filled her with a quiet sense of joy.
Liu Lingyan knew her gaze might make Xu Manyue uncomfortable, so she kept her eyes on her own plate. She only looked up occasionally, always with caution.
She knew Xu Manyue’s health had always been fragile. Breakfast was especially important. Besides, if she thought carefully, all four of them had stomach issues of one kind or another.
None of them spoke while eating. In the surveillance room, the production team could clearly hear the quiet clinking of bowls and chopsticks. They stared at the monitor, frustrated but helpless.
Each person at that table was someone they could not afford to offend. They could not say anything, nor could they interfere. When Xu Manyue had first contacted them about the project, she made it clear that not everything recorded would necessarily be aired. They had strict rules to follow and knew better than to cross any lines.
“I want to assign a few bodyguards to protect Fantuan from a distance,” Xu Manyue said once she had finished eating.
“That’s a good idea,” Liu Lingyan agreed immediately. “Since neither of us is there, it’s reassuring to know someone will be watching over her.”
Otherwise, during this extended stay, Liu Lingyan could not guarantee she would be able to stay the entire time. If anything happened to Fantuan, she might immediately fly home without hesitation.
Fantuan. Was that a child’s name? What kind of relationship did this child have with the famously single Best Actress Liu Lingyan and the highly private CEO Xu Manyue?
The director in the monitoring room suddenly perked up. She could practically sense the gossip potential seeping through the screen.
But then she saw Xu Manyue look directly into the camera. Her gaze was calm but carried an unmistakable warning.
The director shivered. The spark of excitement inside her was instantly extinguished. This was someone she could not afford to provoke.
Lin Xinyi had made a bit too much porridge. When Xu Shijiu was about three-quarters through, she already felt uncomfortably full.
She knew Lin Xinyi had made this specifically for her, using the portion size she had eaten three years ago. But her body had changed. After three years of pushing herself to stay buried in work, often skipping meals or eating whatever was convenient, her appetite had shrunk. Her stomach could no longer handle what it once could.
The familiar flavor hit her the moment the first spoonful entered her mouth. The taste nearly brought tears to her eyes.
The housekeeper’s cooking had been top-tier, praised by everyone who tried it. Objectively, Lin Xinyi’s skills were no match. But this porridge was the one taste she had missed the most over the past three years.
“If you’re full, stop eating,” Xu Manyue said when she noticed how stuffed Xu Shijiu looked.
Lin Xinyi’s eyes immediately shifted to her. She had assumed Xu Shijiu was eating comfortably, but her sister’s comment made it clear that something had changed.
Three years ago, this portion had been just right.
“I skipped dinner last night. I’m really hungry,” Xu Shijiu replied. She could not bear to waste this porridge, not after missing it for so long. She really had not eaten the night before, which explained why she was starving this morning.
“Eating too much at once isn’t good for your stomach,” Lin Xinyi said gently. She picked up the bowl from Xu Shijiu’s hands, clearly catching on to the message from Xu Manyue.
“What are you doing?” Xu Shijiu stared at the bowl but did not move to stop her.
“If you want more later, I’ll make it for you again. Alright?” Lin Xinyi’s voice was soft, almost like she was comforting a child.
Xu Shijiu had nothing left to say.
“Alright.”
She couldn’t help but think to herself that Lin Xinyi’s tenderness was far too clever.
Xu Manyue was content being treated like background scenery. Watching the way Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi interacted, she finally felt a bit of relief. Compared to the hopeless tension between her and Liu Lingyan, the problems between Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi seemed minor.
Still, everything would take time to heal and settle.
Breakfast had been far too luxurious. Now they had to figure out how to source ingredients for the next two meals.
To create opportunities for Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi to grow closer, Xu Manyue had specifically instructed the production team to choose a comfortable but challenging countryside setting. What she didn’t expect was that her own plan would end up making things difficult for her as well.
Xu Manyue’s health wasn’t good, and both Lin Xinyi and Liu Lingyan were Omegas. That left only Xu Shijiu to do the heavier work around the house, like picking vegetables from the fields. She could only hope her legs wouldn’t betray her today.
“Liu Sister, you stay here with Sister and make sure she takes her medicine. I’ll go to the fields with Xu Shijiu and bring back vegetables for you to clean. You and Liu Sister don’t need to go out there,” Lin Xinyi said.
After speaking, she quickly went after Xu Shijiu, leaving Liu Lingyan and Xu Manyue alone together.
Xu Manyue felt awkward. Liu Lingyan opened the small cabinet that held Xu Manyue’s medication and followed the instructions taped to the inside. She carefully unboxed each medicine and counted the doses exactly.
“I can do it myself,” Xu Manyue said, still feeling uncomfortable. Over the past few days, only Xu Shijiu occasionally helped her with her medicine. Most of the time, she preferred to do it herself. It helped her pass the time.
Liu Lingyan acted as if she hadn’t heard. Her expression was serious and focused, as if she were doing something extremely important, even though all she was doing was sorting medicine.
She had never believed the rumors that Xu Manyue gave Xu Corporation to Xu Shijiu because of poor health.
Not until Xu Shijiu explained it all to her.
Not until she saw for herself the paleness in Xu Manyue’s face, the way her hand instinctively pressed against her chest when she got too emotional.
Only then did Liu Lingyan accept that Xu Manyue’s body was no longer what it used to be.
“These medicines…” Liu Lingyan began but did not finish the sentence.
Xu Manyue waited silently.
“What are they for?” Liu Lingyan continued, not looking up as she worked.
Without direct eye contact, Xu Manyue actually felt more relaxed. “They’re just for… a bunch of random problems,” she answered casually.
She didn’t really care much about her own health and never paid attention to long lists of explanations from doctors. It was always Xu Shijiu who went with her to checkups, listened carefully to the doctors, and took notes.
So if anyone wanted real answers about her condition, they should ask Xu Shijiu.
“A bunch of random problems…” Liu Lingyan repeated softly.
She felt a sharp ache in her chest, as if something had pricked her heart.
She wanted to ask Xu Manyue how she had ended up like this. Why had she neglected her health? Why did she treat herself so carelessly?
Why did she stop caring?
If Liu Lingyan asked, Xu Manyue probably wouldn’t know how to answer. Maybe she had simply stopped believing her life mattered anymore.
The person she once dreamed of growing old with had become someone she could never have again. The vow they once shared, to stay together for life, had become a cruel joke and a tragic ending.
It had been Liu Lingyan who gave Xu Manyue a brief sense of release from the crushing guilt she carried. Because of her, there were moments when Xu Manyue could almost believe that not everything was her fault.
Now that there was no future between them, Xu Manyue sometimes found herself wishing her life would just end a little sooner. Or that some unexpected accident would take her away.
That would be better.
Then she would no longer be a burden to anyone.
She had always felt like a disaster, someone who should never have been born into this world.
