You Are My Omega - Chapter 102
Ever since Xu Manyue’s Omega returned, and Xu Shijiu’s Omega came back as well, Ling Mian rarely visited the Xu household anymore. Even when she did, she would first contact Xu Manyue and only go over after confirming that Xu Manyue was home alone.
Ling Mian, an Alpha who usually had a cheerful smile on her face, always seemed upbeat no matter what worries she was hiding. But this time, the Ling Mian standing in front of Xu Manyue looked nothing like the confident and radiant person she remembered. She appeared exhausted and defeated.
“What happened to you?” Xu Manyue asked, struggling to believe this was the same woman she had always known to be full of spirit and strength.
“…A lot has happened,” Ling Mian replied with a weary smile.
It was as if her entire being had been drained of life. Seeing her like this made Xu Manyue feel deeply unsettled.
“You look like you could faint at any moment. That’s really scary. Come inside quickly,” she urged.
Xu Manyue stepped aside to let her in. Seeing Ling Mian hesitate, she quickly added, “Don’t worry. I’m the only one at home right now.”
“Then I’ll intrude for a bit,” Ling Mian finally agreed and entered.
She sat on the living room couch while Xu Manyue poured her a cup of tea. Sensing that Ling Mian was holding something back, Xu Manyue didn’t press for details right away.
“Just relax for a bit,” she said softly.
“Thank you,” Ling Mian whispered, forcing a small smile. Her hands trembled as she lifted the cup, and it was only with great effort that she managed not to spill any tea.
After watching her take a few sips, Xu Manyue couldn’t hold back anymore.
“What exactly happened?”
Ling Mian clutched the teacup tightly. Her eyes reddened with tears. “I got word from home this morning… My aunt passed away.”
“What?!” Xu Manyue was stunned.
Her instincts immediately told her something was wrong. “How could that happen?”
“I don’t know,” Ling Mian replied, her voice hollow. “They said she died of an illness…”
She looked completely lost and confused. “But how is that possible?”
“My aunt always had good health. She went for regular checkups every year. In fact, just a few days ago, she had this year’s medical exam. The doctor said everything looked perfect. And now they’re saying she suddenly died of an illness? How can that be real?”
Ling Mian’s hands were clenched into fists, her whole body trembling, but she still forced herself to stay composed in front of Xu Manyue.
Xu Manyue didn’t speak. Just hearing Ling Mian’s story made her suspicious. She could only imagine what Ling Mian herself must be thinking.
Besides, the Ling family had already been in a state of unrest. Her aunt’s grip on the family power had caused tension with many family members and extended relatives.
“If they wanted to lie, they should have at least made the story more convincing,” Ling Mian muttered through gritted teeth.
Xu Manyue didn’t try to comfort her. Ling Mian didn’t need comforting.
“Did your aunt leave behind a will?” Xu Manyue asked, her voice unnaturally calm. When it came to people outside her close circle, her emotions rarely wavered.
“No,” Ling Mian answered, shaking her head.
“What do you plan to do?”
“I still have to go back.”
“You’ve decided to leave the entertainment industry and step into a different world and life?”
Ling Mian had once said that she entered showbiz not just because she loved acting, but more so because she wanted to escape the cold, calculated, and dangerous environment of the Ling family.
“I keep thinking… if I had gone back to help when my aunt asked me to, maybe things wouldn’t have ended up like this,” she said bitterly, her eyes filled with regret and guilt.
Xu Manyue had no answer for that.
She too had wondered before. If she had never existed in this world, if that birthday party had never happened, if she had not called her mother to rush over that day, then… maybe everything that followed would not have turned out this way.
A sound at the entrance broke both of them from their thoughts.
“Jie, is someone visiting today?” Lin Xinyi’s voice came from outside.
Right after that came Xu Shijiu’s anxious warning, “Xinyi, be careful. Walk slowly.”
Xu Manyue and Ling Mian looked at each other, and in both their eyes was a flash of nervousness.
Xu Shijiu still cared deeply about what had happened between Ling Mian and Lin Xinyi. Even though it had all been cleared up, and there had been no wrongdoing between them, Xu Shijiu still clearly felt uneasy about it.
“Ling Mian…?” Lin Xinyi froze at the sight.
Xu Shijiu was carefully supporting her heavily pregnant Omega and had been looking down to make sure every step was safe. Upon hearing the name, she immediately looked up, eyes filled with wariness. Without even seeing Ling Mian’s full expression, she instinctively stepped in front of Lin Xinyi, blocking her.
She did not want Lin Xinyi to have anything more to do with Ling Mian.
Only when Xu Shijiu got a good look at Ling Mian did her guarded expression turn into one of surprise.
“I’m sorry. I’ll leave now,” Ling Mian said quickly as she stood up in a panic. From the way they reacted, she could easily guess how terrible she must look.
“Wait!” Xu Manyue grabbed her wrist before she could leave.
Ling Mian looked at her silently, pleading with her eyes to let her go.
She didn’t want to leave behind such a miserable image in front of her younger sister. She hadn’t intended to run into Xu Shijiu at all. She had only come to see the Xu home again, hoping to soak in some warmth and preserve a comforting memory. Something she could carry with her when she returned to the cold, scheming world of the Ling family.
“Don’t be in such a hurry to leave,” Xu Shijiu said stiffly.
Lin Xinyi gently squeezed Xu Shijiu’s hand, silently giving her encouragement. Her eyes were filled with concern.
“…I didn’t expect you two to come back so soon,” Ling Mian said as she turned back, unable to leave now.
Her current state tugged painfully at Xu Shijiu’s heart. She hesitated for a long time but still couldn’t find the right words to say. Then she saw Lin Xinyi rub her lower back slightly. Alarmed, she helped her sit down on the couch and carefully tucked some pillows behind her for support.
“I’m fine,” Lin Xinyi murmured. She had whispered a small protest earlier. Being stared at by three people like this made her feel uncomfortable. Normally she wouldn’t care, but today it just felt awkward.
Xu Shijiu ignored her objections. Once she made sure Lin Xinyi was seated comfortably, she turned her attention back to Ling Mian.
This time, Xu Shijiu was finally calm enough to ask the question.
“Ling Mian, what happened?”
Ling Mian’s heart trembled. She never expected Xu Shijiu to show her concern. Her throat tightened, and it took her a long while to find her voice again.
“There was… a situation at home.”
“Is it very serious?” Xu Shijiu asked, unsure how to describe the emotions welling up in her heart. All she knew was that seeing Ling Mian in this state stirred a complicated and indescribable feeling inside her.
“It’s quite serious,” Ling Mian replied softly.
She couldn’t bring herself to tell Xu Shijiu the truth, that something had happened to the Ling family, and the person who had died was the aunt who had once loved them so deeply when they were little.
Xu Shijiu didn’t even know that the two of them were blood sisters.
The awkward silence between them made Xu Manyue uncomfortable. For a moment, she even had the urge to just come out and tell Xu Shijiu the truth about their relationship. But reason quickly reminded her that she couldn’t. She shouldn’t.
The head of the Ling family had died suddenly. The household must be in complete chaos now. The Ling family was far larger and more complex than the Xu family, filled with people skilled in manipulation and power games. If she told Xu Shijiu the truth now, wouldn’t that just throw her peaceful life into complete disarray?
Xu Manyue didn’t want to see that happen. And if Ling Mian truly loved her sister, she wouldn’t want that either.
“Every problem has a solution,” Xu Shijiu said gently. She didn’t feel it was her place to ask for more details, so she could only offer this small comfort.
Ling Mian smiled faintly. “Are you trying to comfort me?”
Xu Shijiu lowered her head and bit her lip, choosing not to respond.
Ling Mian’s gaze softened as she looked at her. “Thank you, Jiu. I’ll remember what you said.”
It was a rare and precious moment, receiving comfort from her younger sister.
And maybe…
It would be the last time.
The Ling family was facing trouble. If she wanted to keep Xu Shijiu safe and untouched by it, the only way was to sever their connection completely. That was the only guarantee she could give her sister.
This meeting today might very well be their final one.
The way she called her “Jiu” with such tenderness, the soft look in her eyes, left Xu Shijiu momentarily dazed.
“You don’t have to thank me…” Xu Shijiu replied quietly, still somewhat stunned.
She could tell that something was seriously wrong. Otherwise, with Ling Mian’s usual carefree and lighthearted nature, how could she have let herself fall into such a state?
There was something in her eyes that Xu Shijiu couldn’t look away from.
This was the first time Xu Shijiu had ever looked at her so seriously, Ling Mian thought to herself.
And it made her feel happy. At the very least, before they said goodbye, their relationship was no longer so tense. No more constant friction. She used to think that getting even a calm reaction from Xu Shijiu was already a luxury. But now, her sister had offered her comfort. That made her feel overwhelmed with emotion.
When they were young, her little sister rarely smiled at her. Even though she often followed her around, it was always with a look of mild annoyance.
When she climbed a tree and couldn’t get down, her sister walked away with a scowl.
When she played hide-and-seek, her sister scoffed and played with her Rubik’s Cube instead.
When she got lost on the way home, her sister led her back, grumbling the whole time.
She had thought she was the one leading her sister around. But thinking back now, it seemed like her younger sister had been quietly taking care of her all along.
Ling Mian’s smile faded a little.
It was a good thing Xu Shijiu ended up in the Xu family.
She didn’t have to suffer in the Ling family, didn’t have to endure the cunning and power struggles, didn’t have to be forced into a marriage of status and expectations. She had an older sister to care for her, not one she had to protect. She had someone who loved her, a life full of happiness, and soon she would welcome her own child into the world.
That was enough.
