You Are My Omega - Chapter 101
Fantuan had never looked forward to her birthday this much. She woke up on her own before her mothers could come wake her. She got dressed quickly and neatly, then sat obediently on her little bed, hugging her stuffed bear, quietly waiting for Mommy or Auntie to come in.
Sleeping alone had never been difficult for Fantuan. What she did notice was that ever since Mommy and Mama started sharing a room again, Mama would come wake her about half an hour later than usual.
She didn’t complain. Sleeping a little longer was always a good thing.
Even though it was her birthday, she still had to go to school. And ever since Xu Manyue started personally taking her, Fantuan had become especially enthusiastic about it. She no longer pouted or sulked like she used to.
“Fantuan, Mama will pick you up tonight and take you somewhere special. You just study hard at school today.”
“I know, Mama. I’m always well-behaved,” Fantuan replied cheerfully as she waved at Xu Manyue. Holding tightly onto both straps of her backpack, she skipped happily into school. Everything seemed fine—until she stepped into the classroom.
Her pace suddenly slowed, and the cheerful energy from moments ago vanished. A classmate came over to talk, but the conversation ended quickly, and the classmate walked away. Fantuan, who had been so bright and bubbly at home, was now quiet and withdrawn.
Xu Manyue felt a heaviness settle in her chest.
Her car remained parked at the entrance long after the school bell rang. Only after the final chime did she slowly drive away. But instead of heading toward the Xu residence, she drove in another unfamiliar direction.
Once again, Xu Manyue was forced to confront her own failures. She had not fulfilled her duties as a mother. In all the years Fantuan had grown up, she had done so without her presence or care. She hadn’t even accompanied her daughter through the simplest parts of childhood.
“Is Fantuan unhappy at school?” she asked after a long pause, while helping Liu Lingyan tie a bow.
“Not exactly unhappy,” Liu Lingyan replied gently. “She’s just not as lively there as she is at home. She’s shy. She doesn’t talk much at school, but her classmates seem to like her. At the very least, they hand in group homework on her behalf and don’t give her a hard time.”
She noticed Xu Manyue struggling with the bow, turning what was supposed to be a neat ribbon into a shapeless mess. Liu Lingyan reached over and quickly fixed it.
“And just not being picked on is enough?” Xu Manyue asked quietly.
Her daughter, who used to be loud, full of energy, and always ready to chatter nonstop at home, had become quiet and reserved at school. She smiled less and had no close friends to speak of.
For days now, Xu Manyue had been watching Fantuan’s small back as she walked into school. Every time, a sharp pain would twist in her heart.
She had been afraid of what she would find if she looked too closely, so she only asked her staff to look into the school, the teachers, and the general environment—but never her daughter’s actual social life.
Liu Lingyan put down the bow she had just finished tying, lowered her gaze, and let out a soft sigh.
“It’s our fault. That’s why her personality changed so much from when she was little.”
Prenatal care was important. A mother’s emotional state during pregnancy could directly influence the baby’s temperament.
When Liu Lingyan had been pregnant, Xu Manyue had cherished her so deeply, doing everything she could to keep her happy and comfortable. As a result, Fantuan had been born cheerful and lively.
As a young child, Fantuan was full of energy and mischief. Even when they were outside, she would quickly bond with other kids and laugh freely.
But now…
The Xu household was quiet. The only occasional sounds came from the kitchen—the gentle clatter of bowls, plates, or pots and pans.
It was already mid-morning. Sunlight streamed through the windows, so bright that the curtains could barely block it. Only then did Lin Xinyi slowly wake up.
The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was Xu Shijiu’s peaceful sleeping face.
It was a rare moment.
Lin Xinyi smiled quietly. She stayed perfectly still, not wanting to wake Xu Shijiu, who had always been a light sleeper. She even avoided staring at her face for too long, afraid her gaze alone might wake her. She had tested that theory more than once.
Looking down slightly, she saw Xu Shijiu’s hand resting gently on her belly. Her smile grew warmer.
The baby was nearly four months old now, and she was starting to show. She wondered when she would first feel the baby kick.
As she played with the ring on her finger, a sudden wave of sadness washed over her. Her thoughts began to spiral. Negative emotions built up in her chest until even her breathing became difficult.
She knew it was the pregnancy causing her mood swings.
She was very aware of that. She tried her best not to overthink and had been following the advice of her therapist to stay calm. But nothing seemed to help this time.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Shijiu’s groggy voice came from beside her. It was hoarse and still thick with sleep.
“I’m fine. Go back to sleep,” Lin Xinyi whispered as she buried her face in Xu Shijiu’s chest and shook her head, trying her hardest not to let her emotions spill over and affect her partner.
“Are you crying?” Xu Shijiu asked nervously. “I’m right here, Lin Xinyi. Whatever it is, you can talk to me.”
“I’m really okay,” Lin Xinyi insisted, not wanting to let her unexplained emotions become a burden again.
Even she didn’t recognize herself anymore. How had she become so fragile? Why did tears come so easily? Why was she always so emotional?
She almost didn’t know who she was anymore.
“What are you thinking about?” Xu Shijiu asked with a tired sigh. Lin Xinyi’s moods were harder to predict than the weather. One moment she was sunshine, the next a storm. One second she was summer heat, and the next it was snowing in her heart.
Lin Xinyi stayed silent.
“You promised me, remember? You said you’d never keep anything from me again. Are you going back on that now?” Xu Shijiu asked, pressing right on Lin Xinyi’s weak spot.
“I’m not!” Lin Xinyi replied, clearly flustered.
“Then tell me what you’re thinking about. We worked so hard to be together again, Lin Xinyi. I don’t want us to argue over things left unsaid. I don’t want us to repeat the same mistakes and be separated again.”
“You don’t want that either, right? You don’t want our child to go through something like Fantuan did, growing up far too early with a heart that had to learn how to be strong before its time.”
“I don’t want us to be separated,” Lin Xinyi said, gripping Xu Shijiu’s hand tightly.
She thought she would be upset hearing the word “separated” from Xu Shijiu’s lips, but to her surprise, she wasn’t. In fact, hearing it spoken so honestly and calmly made her feel strangely relieved.
“Then tell me, Lin Xinyi. I don’t want to see you suffer in silence,” Xu Shijiu said gently. She had no idea how to deal with this little crybaby, and secretly worried their future child might turn out to be just as sensitive.
Lin Xinyi nodded and bit her lip with a touch of embarrassment.
“I don’t even know what happened. I just suddenly remembered a lot of bad things. My mood dropped, and I felt so trapped and heavy.”
“You’re pregnant. Emotional swings are normal.”
“But…”
“Don’t overthink it.”
The more Xu Shijiu tried to comfort her, the more guilty Lin Xinyi felt.
“Why aren’t you mad at me?”
“What would I be angry about?”
Xu Shijiu was genuinely confused by Lin Xinyi’s question. Now that her pregnancy had progressed, her symptoms had become more noticeable. Every time Xu Shijiu saw her hunched over the sink, retching from morning sickness, her heart ached like it was being pricked by needles.
“I’ve been so unreasonable lately. I cry all of a sudden for no reason. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with you, but you’re the one who always has to comfort me. Everything has been going so well lately. There’s nothing really troubling me, but my emotions go up and down constantly. Every single day feels like this, Xu Shijiu…”
“I don’t even recognize myself anymore.”
“You silly girl. What do you mean it has nothing to do with me?” Xu Shijiu felt a dull ache in her heart, though she tried to keep her voice light and teasing. “If it had nothing to do with me, do you think you’d be pregnant right now?”
It was because of her that Lin Xinyi had to endure all of this.
“One person alone…” Lin Xinyi froze for a second. Xu Shijiu’s interruption made her seriously consider that thought. “One person alone really can’t get pregnant.”
But… that night, it was the Omega who had tempted the Alpha. This baby… you could say the Omega had ‘stolen’ it, without the Alpha’s full consent.
“You are you, Lin Xinyi. Who else could be Lin Xinyi, if not you?”
Xu Shijiu chose to trust what the psychologist had told her. The emotional vulnerability Lin Xinyi was experiencing during pregnancy had brought out a version of herself that had been hidden since childhood. The part of her that was soft, sensitive, and childlike. Maybe this was her truest self.
If Lin Xinyi used to be described as strong, then the current her could only be described as fragile.
And that fragility awakened a fierce instinct in Xu Shijiu to protect her. It had grown so strong that she didn’t even feel comfortable leaving Lin Xinyi alone for too long, afraid she might break down in tears the moment she was left by herself.
“Xu Shijiu, will you get tired of me eventually?” Lin Xinyi asked with a sob in her voice. “I’m really trying to change. I’m really trying, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to control my emotions.”
“Lin Xinyi,” Xu Shijiu said, her voice firm and commanding now.
Lin Xinyi immediately froze.
“Lift your head.”
She instinctively obeyed Xu Shijiu’s words.
Her face was covered in tears.
But to Xu Shijiu’s surprise, this approach actually worked. The psychologist had advised her to be more assertive with Lin Xinyi. Xu Shijiu had hesitated to follow that advice, afraid that being too harsh would scare or upset the Omega. But seeing the result now…
It really worked.
Gently, she kissed away the tears on Lin Xinyi’s cheeks. And when Lin Xinyi started to pull back, Xu Shijiu gave her a stern look. Just like that, Lin Xinyi became obedient again.
“Looks like I really do have to be a bit fiercer from now on. Only then will you listen to me.”
“…You want to be fierce with me?”
