- Chapter 46 - Carrying Him on His Shoulder to the Rooftop Suite
“I told you before, Jiang Huaiyan is not a simple man. He had a motive for becoming your bodyguard,” Zhou Yunqing said seriously while driving.
“What motive?” Zhou Yunqiu looked at his brother with some nervousness.
“I can’t find out the specific goal, but I only know it’s related to our father. He has been investigating ever since Dad returned to the country.”
Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes widened suddenly, and he let out a gasp. “He’s not… is he…?”
Zhou Yunqing shook his head. “No. I had the same thought as you at the time—I thought he was our half-brother. But I did a DNA test on him; he is not Dad’s son.”
Zhou Yunqiu let out a massive sigh of relief; he had nearly been scared to death.
“Qiuqiu, Dad is not a good person. He did a lot of bastardly things in the past. That is exactly why I’ve always had bodyguards follow you. You must understand that a heart of caution is necessary, do you understand?”
“Jiang Huaiyan won’t hurt me,” Zhou Yunqiu insisted on his own view.
“But the grudge between him and Dad seems significant. What kind of enmity could make Jiang Huaiyan lurk for so long?”
“Wouldn’t it be easier to just go and ask him directly?” Zhou Yunqiu didn’t understand why there were so many twists and turns. Jiang Huaiyan was right beside them; they could clearly just ask for the truth.
“Qiuqiu, you don’t understand. Some things cannot be asked out loud. Once the balance is broken, a situation may arise that cannot be undone.”
Zhou Yunqiu didn’t quite grasp the meaning of his brother’s words.
“In any case, put those thoughts away. I won’t allow you to be with Jiang Huaiyan. He simply cannot stay by your side forever.”
Mentioning this made Zhou Yunqiu angry. “Isn’t it because of what you said to him?”
Zhou Yunqing sneered. “If I hadn’t said anything, would he not have thought it in his heart? It’s precisely because his heart is wavering that he sent you away. You are not his firm choice.”
Zhou Yunqiu was speechless, his eyes reddening rapidly.
Zhou Yunqing’s voice turned chilling. “Zhou Yunqiu, I have protected you so well not so you could go and be mistreated by others. Someone who doesn’t put you first is not worthy of my approval.”
Zhou Yunqiu was miserable all night. His mind was filled with images of Jiang Huaiyan driving him away. So cruel, so heartless.
Just yesterday, the man said he would be his free bodyguard forever; he had even kissed him forcefully and said he would fulfill his promises. Yet, in the blink of an eye, he didn’t want him anymore.
Clearly, he had him in his heart, yet he didn’t want him.
What exactly was it that could make him abandon him so ruthlessly?
Zhou Yunqiu didn’t want to lose so pointlessly, so he took out his phone and dialed Jiang Huaiyan’s number. He wanted to ask clearly—ask what he was investigating and where his concerns lay.
But Jiang Huaiyan wouldn’t answer his calls. He switched to sending messages.
When he heard the phone’s notification sound, Jiang Huaiyan was sitting in his living room in a daze. His gaze drifted aimlessly. He wanted to lock onto a figure, but he had searched for a long time without finding the one he wanted to see.
It wasn’t until the phone dinged that he remembered the person had been driven away by him. He pulled out his phone with a self-mocking laugh. The missed calls and texts were all from Zhou Yunqiu.
Even after I treated him like that, he still won’t give up? How much does he actually love me?
Jiang Huaiyan opened the messages, and his heart felt as if it were being sliced by a thousand knives; the pain was so intense he could barely breathe.
Zhou Yunqiu: “Jiang Huaiyan, why aren’t you answering? I have something to tell you.” Zhou Yunqiu: “Are you refusing to be with me because you have a grudge against my dad?” Zhou Yunqiu: “What kind of grudge or enmity do you have?” Zhou Yunqiu: “Explain it clearly. I want to die knowing the reason.” Zhou Yunqiu: “Jiang Huaiyan, reply to me quickly. I can’t sleep.”
Looking at those texts, Jiang Huaiyan instinctively clutched his chest, his eyes burning fiercely. But he couldn’t answer Zhou Yunqiu. He couldn’t overturn the last shred of hope he had for seeing him again.
He sat on the sofa holding his phone, enduring that invisible torture. After an unknown amount of time, the phone began to sound again. It was another text from Zhou Yunqiu.
If the previous messages were a single knife, the current ones were countless blades, stabbing into his heart and twisting.
Zhou Yunqiu: “Jiang Huaiyan, I miss you so much. I miss you so much I can’t sleep.” Zhou Yunqiu: “I’m definitely finished. Even after you drove me away like that, I still don’t want to give up on you. I want to make one last struggle.” Zhou Yunqiu: “But you’re ignoring me. Even my last struggle is useless.” Zhou Yunqiu: “Jiang Huaiyan, I’ve decided to go see that Alpha.”
Jiang Huaiyan had no idea how he endured that night. He only knew that when he woke up, he was on the floor of the gym.
Last night, it seemed that because he couldn’t handle the heart-wrenching pain, he went to work out, hoping the agony would dissipate with his sweat. But he had overestimated himself; the pain didn’t lessen at all, and he had simply exhausted himself into a faint.
He fumbled for his phone, desperate to see Zhou Yunqiu’s messages again. Upon opening it, a message from half an hour ago came into view.
It was still from Zhou Yunqiu: “Jiang Huaiyan, as long as you say you don’t want me to go see that Alpha, I won’t go.”
Jiang Huaiyan hurriedly closed his eyes. His heart, which had finally found a moment of peace, began to ache intolerably again, and the hand holding the phone trembled slightly.
Suddenly, a call alert came through. Jiang Huaiyan thought it was Zhou Yunqiu, but upon looking, he saw it was Zhou Yunqing.
What does it mean for Zhou Yunqing to call me at this time? A bad premonition suddenly surged in his heart.
He answered immediately, and Zhou Yunqing’s anxious voice came through: “Did Qiuqiu go to find you?”
Jiang Huaiyan sat up abruptly, rushed out of the gym, and ran downstairs. There was no sign of Zhou Yunqiu in the house, nor outside the villa.
“No, he didn’t come to find me. What happened?”
“He met the person halfway through the date and then just ran off. He’s not answering calls or texts. I’m very worried about him; his surroundings aren’t exactly safe right now.”
“I’ll go find him.” Jiang Huaiyan hung up and immediately arranged for people to search.
The Peak.
Duan Mingxu and Zhou Yunqiu were currently staring at each other.
“I’ve made it very clear; you won’t get anything out of me. If you want to know about the business between Jiang Huaiyan and your dad, go ask Jiang Huaiyan directly,” Duan Mingxu said with a yawn, looking as though he hadn’t slept yet.
Zhou Yunqiu glared at him coldly. “With that attitude, you can forget about ever chasing my brother.”
“Now that was a very effective statement,” Duan Mingxu said, instantly perking up. “I’ll tell you Jiang Huaiyan’s secret. What do you have to trade? I only accept things related to your brother.”
“My brother’s likes and dislikes?”
“Can you say something useful?”
“My brother has a psychological shadow regarding adult Alphas,” Zhou Yunqiu said, then felt it wasn’t quite right. “No, I shouldn’t tell you that.”
“Why does he have a psychological shadow regarding adult Alphas?” Duan Mingxu’s curiosity had been piqued by Zhou Yunqiu, and he kept pressing for more.
Zhou Yunqiu refused to elaborate. “Just don’t mention it in front of my brother, or you’ll be completely out of the running.”
“That serious?”
Zhou Yunqiu nodded. Just as Duan Mingxu was trying to trick him into explaining further, Jiang Huaiyan, having received the news, arrived.
“Come with me,” Jiang Huaiyan said to Zhou Yunqiu.
Zhou Yunqiu sat still, refusing to acknowledge him.
“Your brother is very worried about you.”
“What, are you planning to personally deliver me back to that Alpha blind date?” Zhou Yunqiu looked at him with a sneer—a sneer that held a trace of undisguisable disappointment.
“I’m not sending you there.”
“Then you should just leave. I have nothing to do with you anymore; I’ll stay wherever I want to stay.” Zhou Yunqiu calmly picked up a wine bottle nearby to pour himself a drink.
Jiang Huaiyan stopped him. “It’s not a suitable time to drink.”
With a loud thud, Zhou Yunqiu slammed the bottle back onto the table. “Who are you to care? Even if I died, you wouldn’t need to spare me a second glance. I don’t want to see you right now. Get the hell out.”
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t move. Zhou Yunqiu grabbed a glass and hurled it at him. “Get out! I told you to get out! You were so calm when you told me to get out last night, so why come looking for me now? Do I need you to find me?”
One glass wasn’t enough to vent his anger. Zhou Yunqiu wanted to throw other things, scaring Duan Mingxu into jumping up to stop him. “My little ancestor, you can’t throw these! They’re from my private collection!”
“I’ll throw whatever I want! Every single one of you… not a single good person among you!” Zhou Yunqiu picked up items and smashed them with a series of crashes.
Fine ceramics shattered into pieces. Duan Mingxu’s heart bled at the sight.
Seeing him smash things with increasing vigor and showing no intention of following him voluntarily, Jiang Huaiyan went straight to his side, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and walked out quickly.
“What are you doing? Put me down! Jiang Huaiyan, let me go!” Zhou Yunqiu pounded on the man’s solid back in a rage, struggling to get down.
Jiang Huaiyan delivered a slap to his backside. “Stop moving, or you’ll fall.”
The strike stunned Zhou Yunqiu into a daze, followed immediately by an even more intense fury. Jiang Huaiyan quickened his pace, carrying him up to the rooftop suite.
