- Chapter 42 - I’ve Run Away From Home, Can You Take Me In?
“Why would he come back if his business isn’t finished? Go back to your room and sleep,” Zhou Yunqing said, then shook his head at Jiang Huaiyan.
At this moment, it was not suitable to see Zhou Yunqiu.
Qiuqiu would worry about him.
Jiang Huaiyan understood Zhou Yunqing’s reasoning, even though he desperately wanted to see him. If Zhou Yunqiu knew he was being taken away, he would likely clamor to go with him. An Omega in heat absolutely could not be wandering about outside.
“Then… will you find another Alpha for him?” Jiang Huaiyan asked, his voice filled with trepidation.
Zhou Yunqing watched him silently. That gaze made Jiang Huaiyan feel somewhat ashamed; as a bodyguard, he had no right to question such matters.
After a long silence, Zhou Yunqing sighed helplessly. “I won’t force it, but I have looked into an Alpha with a very good family background. If Qiuqiu is willing, I will take him to meet him.”
He won’t agree.
Zhou Yunqiu’s answer immediately surfaced in Jiang Huaiyan’s mind. Zhou Yunqiu had told him many times: no Alphas, only him.
“Go in peace. I will get you out.”
Jiang Huaiyan nodded, casting a lingering, reluctant look toward the second floor before following the officers out.
On the second day of Jiang Huaiyan’s detention, Zhou Yunqing arrived with a lawyer to see him.
After speaking with the lawyer, Zhou Yunqing took out his phone. “Qiuqiu has been making a fuss about seeing you. I told him I sent you on a mission and that you couldn’t be contacted. Give him a call and calm him down.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s heart raced. He eagerly took the phone and dialed the number he knew by heart.
However, the first call was hung up.
He quickly dialed a second time. It was hung up again.
Zhou Yunqing: “…”
It wasn’t until Jiang Huaiyan patiently dialed a third time that Zhou Yunqiu finally answered. “Oh, so the Eldest Master actually has time to call me? I thought he’d already forgotten me, his employer.”
“I’m sorry, I’ve been too busy these past few days.”
“Mhm, busy. Then go back to being busy. I’m clearly not as important as your work, am I? Since you’re so busy, don’t bother calling me!” Zhou Yunqiu finished his rant and angrily hung up again.
Jiang Huaiyan wasn’t the least bit angry. He dialed again.
This time, Zhou Yunqiu picked up quickly, his voice softening by several degrees. “Considering you’ve called me four times in a row, I’ll stop being mad. When are you coming back? I miss you so much.”
“I’ll be back in a few days. Be good at home, listen to the Eldest Master, eat well, and sleep well,” Jiang Huaiyan whispered, his tone involuntarily softening until it was sweet enough to melt someone.
“I miss you so much I can’t eat or sleep,” Zhou Yunqiu blurted out.
Jiang Huaiyan broke into a cold sweat. Zhou Yunqing was sitting right across from him, with the lawyer and a guarding police officer nearby.
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me you don’t miss me. Don’t think I don’t know you secretly saved my photos,” Zhou Yunqiu huffed proudly. “I resent you that photo of my ass, plus a few more seductive ones. Have you seen them? Do you have any… naughty thoughts?”
Jiang Huaiyan glanced at Zhou Yunqing, sweat pouring down his back. Zhou Yunqing’s gaze looked sharp enough to tear him apart.
He struggled with the volume buttons on the phone, trying to turn it down, only to realize after several frantic presses that it was already at the lowest setting.
Unaware, Zhou Yunqiu continued to flirt: “Even if you’re thinking of me, you have to hold it in. When you come back, I’ll…”
“Young Master, there are people with me,” Jiang Huaiyan interrupted before Zhou Yunqiu’s words could get any bolder.
“So what if there are people? As long as my brother isn’t there, it’s fine.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…” Zhou Yunqing: “…” The lawyer and the officer: “…”
“Jiang Huaiyan, you got lucky this time. Just you wait until you get back!” “When the time comes, I’m going to tie you to the bed and see which is harder—your mouth or that place.”
Zhou Yunqing couldn’t listen anymore. He snatched the phone from Jiang Huaiyan’s hand, slammed the call shut, and then slammed the device onto the table with a loud thwack, glaring at Jiang Huaiyan in a rage.
Jiang Huaiyan lowered his head. He wasn’t afraid; he was busy imagining the scene of Zhou Yunqiu tying him to the bed.
That would certainly be… exciting.
“Jiang Huaiyan, give me an explanation. What is going on between you and my brother? How far has it gone?”
Jiang Huaiyan pulled his thoughts back and looked at Zhou Yunqing with calm eyes. “We haven’t reached that stage yet, but he is a very lovely person. I want to have a deeper development with him.”
“Absolutely not. I won’t interfere if you’re just playing around, but emotions cannot be involved,” Zhou Yunqing opposed firmly. He knew his brother’s mischievous nature; the more you forbade him from playing, the more he would. But he would not allow his brother to develop real feelings. For an Omega to fall for a Beta was no different from a death sentence.
“Eldest Master, feelings cannot be controlled.”
“Then cut them off completely,” Zhou Yunqing’s voice was cold and hard. “Once this matter is resolved, you will leave. I will find him a more suitable bodyguard.”
“No!”
“You have no right to say no. I am the employer. I hereby announce that you are fired.” Zhou Yunqing stood up and left, refusing to hear another word from Jiang Huaiyan.
Back in the detention cell, Jiang Huaiyan was still in a daze. He had been fired. Would he ever be able to see Zhou Yunqiu again? Would a new bodyguard be able to protect him properly? Would Zhou Yunqiu be distracted by someone new?
The more he thought, the more agitated he became. He wished he could go out right now and demand an explanation from Zhou Yunqiu—did he like him as a person, or just his body?
But he couldn’t leave. The lawyer said Fang Yanting was seriously injured, and the Fang family refused to let the matter go.
While he was consumed by anxiety, Duan Mingxu came to visit.
“I was only home for a few days, and you’ve already turned yourself into this?” Duan Mingxu chuckled helplessly.
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t joke back. He said urgently, “Help me think of a way. Zhou Yunqing wants to fire me. I won’t be able to stay by his side anymore.”
Duan Mingxu’s “peach blossom” eyes narrowed slightly. “Why did he fire you? Did he find out you have improper thoughts about his brother?”
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t deny it.
“Then just let it go. You two probably can’t be together anyway.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your mother’s death… it really does have something to do with Zhou Yushen.” Duan Mingxu took out the materials he had brought and showed them to Jiang Huaiyan.
Jiang Huaiyan took them and flipped through. The further he read, the uglier his expression became.
The photos were old and the quality was blurry, but it was clear that his mother, Jiang Wenshu, was smiling happily because she was holding Zhou Yushen’s arm. The two of them walked through a small alley and disappeared at the end of the street.
The next image showed Zhou Yushen buying a knife at a small convenience store. Following that was the news of Jiang Wenshu’s suicide.
“These photos confirm your suspicions. She was smiling so happily and had you as a son; there was no reason for her to suddenly commit suicide,” Duan Mingxu added at the right moment.
Jiang Huaiyan looked at the documents, speechless.
“While this isn’t enough to prove Zhou Yushen killed her, he is absolutely involved.”
“If you can let go of the hatred in your heart, I won’t stop you from being with Zhou Yunqiu. But you’ve carried this hatred for so many years—can you really drop it?”
Jiang Huaiyan couldn’t answer that question. He couldn’t let go, yet he couldn’t bear to lose Zhou Yunqiu. There had to be a choice.
“If you can’t let go, then break it off quickly to avoid more pain later. I heard Zhou Yunqing found an Alpha for him with an excellent background, just waiting for him to agree to a meeting.”
“It’s hard to ask you to choose so suddenly. You’ll be here for a few more days; use the time to think.”
After Duan Mingxu left, Jiang Huaiyan didn’t sleep for a day and a night. He lay on the hard board bed, staring quietly at the ceiling. Two figures repeated in his mind: his mother, Jiang Wenshu, and Zhou Yunqiu.
He remembered when he was seven. His mother said she was taking him to find his father. He was so happy; ever since he could remember, he had wanted a father. Other kids had fathers to play with, but he didn’t. He only had his mother.
His mother had raised him with great hardship, enduring countless cold glares because she was an Omega with a child but no Alpha. The moment he learned he could find his father, he was truly happy. He thought someone would finally protect her. She wouldn’t be bullied anymore. He could protect her together with his father.
But she died. She died in that tiny house. Everyone said it was suicide, but he never believed it. She had him—why would she kill herself? She had no reason; she must have been killed by someone else.
And the biggest suspect was Zhou Yushen.
Why does Zhou Yunqiu have to be Zhou Yushen’s son? Why did he have to kill my mother?
The day Jiang Huaiyan was released, he first went to the cemetery to give his mother a bouquet of flowers and spoke with her for a while. From the cemetery, he went to the hospital. He wanted to see Zhou Yushen and ask him personally if he was the killer. But Zhou Yushen was still in the ICU; he couldn’t see him, and he had no status to be there.
When he returned to his own villa, he saw a familiar figure from a distance, sitting on the steps with a pink suitcase beside him. The person seemed to be asleep, leaning against the suitcase with a hat pulled over his head.
Based solely on the color of that hat, Jiang Huaiyan knew it was Zhou Yunqiu.
His breathing tightened as he approached cautiously. But before he could get close, the person on the steps woke up.
He took off the hat, revealing an exquisite face. He stood up in surprise. “You’re back! Why didn’t you answer my calls?” Then, the joy on his face turned to dejection. “Is it because my brother fired you that you won’t take my calls?”
Looking at that crestfallen face, Jiang Huaiyan’s heart throbbed with pain.
“Jiang Huaiyan…” Zhou Yunqiu stepped down and came to his side. He tentatively grabbed his hand and whispered, “I’ve run away from home. Can you take me in?”
