- Chapter 27 - Kissing Away the Tears from the Corners of His Eyes Out of Heartache
When Zhou Yunqiu received the news of Jiang Huaiyan’s disappearance, he was completely stunned. How could he possibly be missing? He was Jiang Huaiyan, after all the omnipotent Jiang Huaiyan.
But his brother wouldn’t lie to him. Jiang Huaiyan was truly missing. He set out immediately to find Zhou Yunqing. Upon his arrival, Zhou Yunqing personally came to receive him.
“Brother…” Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes were rimmed with red. He hugged his brother tightly, his heart overflowing with panic.
“Qiuqiu, I’m sorry. It was my fault for not looking after him well.” Zhou Yunqing rubbed his younger brother’s head out of heartache.
“He still hasn’t been found?” Zhou Yunqiu asked anxiously.
Zhou Yunqing shook his head. “The search is ongoing.”
“Is it possible he climbed out on his own?” Zhou Yunqiu simply couldn’t believe that Jiang Huaiyan would just stay submerged in the water.
“It’s possible.”
“If he climbed out, why didn’t he come looking for you?” The more Zhou Yunqiu thought about it, the more panicked he became. Tears fell uncontrollably. “Brother, he… he couldn’t be dead, could he?”
“He won’t be,” Zhou Yunqing comforted him warmly. Though he said it, he had no real confidence in the words; however, he had no other choice.
Those words provided no comfort to Zhou Yunqiu whatsoever. He knew deep down that something must have happened; otherwise, Jiang Huaiyan would have found his way back. How could he be dead? He hadn’t even slept with the man yet—how could he die!
“Who was it? Who was the one who pushed him into the river?” Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes burned with fury as he looked directly at Zhou Yunqing. “If you find out, you must tell me. I’ll personally go and avenge him.”
Zhou Yunqing feigned complete ignorance. “…Alright.”
The search process was agonizing and protracted. In just two short days, Zhou Yunqiu felt as though two centuries had passed. He didn’t eat, didn’t drink, and didn’t even sleep. He followed the recovery teams along the riverbank constantly, searching for Jiang Huaiyan.
He didn’t know why he was like this. He was just a bodyguard; if he was gone, he could be replaced. But he couldn’t control himself. He just wanted to find Jiang Huaiyan, to have him return to his side and never do anything dangerous again.
Unfortunately, he found nothing. In his desperation, he dialed Duan Mingxu’s number, asking through his tears, “Do you have news of Jiang Huaiyan? He’s still alive, isn’t he?”
Duan Mingxu glanced at Jiang Huaiyan, who had bolted upright at the sound of the crying. “He’s alive. A man like him doesn’t die so easily.”
“Then where is he? Why hasn’t he come back?” Zhou Yunqiu’s crying was heartbreaking.
“He’ll come back when he wants to.”
“Why wouldn’t he want to come back? Do I make him hate me that much?”
Duan Mingxu: “…” How was he supposed to answer that? He looked at Jiang Huaiyan.
Jiang Huaiyan took his phone and typed a line of text: He doesn’t hate you.
Duan Mingxu followed the text Jiang Huaiyan gave him and relayed it to Zhou Yunqiu.
“You’re lying! If he doesn’t hate me, why would he be missing for so long? He’s a bastard, disappearing without a trace and giving no news at all. When he gets back, I’m going to skin him alive.” Zhou Yunqiu’s crying began to turn into a vent of anger.
Duan Mingxu was speechless. “If you skin him, he’ll be even less likely to return.”
Zhou Yunqiu said pitifully, “Then I won’t skin him. I’ll forgive him.”
Duan Mingxu: “…”
“Why don’t you sound sad at all?” Zhou Yunqiu asked suddenly.
Duan Mingxu swallowed nervously. “I am sad. Very sad.”
“You haven’t even cried, and your voice doesn’t sound heartbroken at all.”
Duan Mingxu: “…” He looked at Jiang Huaiyan and mouthed the question of whether he could hang up.
Jiang Huaiyan shook his head. He wanted to hear Zhou Yunqiu’s voice.
Duan Mingxu gritted his teeth. “I’m grieving in my heart.”
“Bullshit! You aren’t sad at all, and you don’t like him. When he gets back, I’m going to tell him how hateful your behavior was.” With a clack, Zhou Yunqiu hung up.
Duan Mingxu was left full of questions. His behavior was hateful? Who exactly was the hateful one here? It was that older brother of his!
“I’m going back tomorrow.” Jiang Huaiyan rubbed his gland, which was covered in a medicinal pack. Zhou Yunqiu’s crying just now had made his heart ache sharply; he needed to get back to his side immediately.
Duan Mingxu did not support this. “Your injuries aren’t healed yet. If you go back now, it’ll be easy to let the cat out of the bag.”
“It won’t. Zhou Yunqing already believes me.” The statements from those Alphas were flawless; Zhou Yunqing had no choice but to believe.
“You’re that certain? He did arrange for an extra person, after all.”
Jiang Huaiyan sneered. “He won’t be able to detect any abnormality in me at all.”
“Even so, you aren’t in a condition to go back yet—unless you find an Omega tonight to help regulate the extremely unstable pheromones in your body…”
“I don’t want an Omega,” Jiang Huaiyan interrupted coldly.
“Then just ‘eat’ Zhou Yunqiu.” Duan Mingxu produced a bottle of blue pills. “I paid a high price to find these. It’s said that after taking this, you can make your glands go into dormancy during arousal, directly hiding your pheromones.”
Jiang Huaiyan looked at the bottle of blue pills, his heart stirring.
“But this is a new drug, and the side effects are still unknown. I’ve only heard that everyone who used it says it’s good. Whether you want to try it is up to you.”
Jiang Huaiyan took the bottle and tucked it away. “Thanks.”
“If you really want to thank me, stop making me worry so much.”
“Mhm. You should go now; I’m going to sleep a bit longer.”
“Alright. Let me know when you leave tomorrow.”
Zhou Yunqiu fell ill. He suffered from recurring high fevers, calling out Jiang Huaiyan’s name incessantly in his delirium. Zhou Yunqing stayed by his side the entire time, looking after him.
This continued until Jiang Huaiyan returned.
“He just fell asleep. Let’s talk outside,” Zhou Yunqing said, standing up.
Jiang Huaiyan cast a heartbroken look at Zhou Yunqiu and followed him out.
“What happened?”
“I took a hit to the head and blacked out. When I woke up, I was in an abandoned building. The person who saved me was a vagrant who didn’t have money to send me to a hospital and wanted to wait for me to wake up so I could be grateful to him. That’s why I was unconscious in that building for four days.”
“Grateful to him? Then he should have told me directly; I would have given him much more money.” While Jiang Huaiyan was missing, Zhou Yunqing had published missing person notices in both the morning and evening papers.
“He has no television and isn’t very literate; he probably wouldn’t have come across those papers,” Jiang Huaiyan said very naturally. “When I woke up, I gave him everything of value I had on me and came back immediately.”
Seeing his pale face and soiled clothes, Zhou Yunqing didn’t ask further. “It’s good that you’re back. Go take a shower first, and then go to the hospital to check your injuries.” After four days of unconsciousness, the head injury needed looking at.
“Mhm. And the Little Young Master…”
“He got sick from worry. Recurring fevers.” Zhou Yunqing sighed helplessly, leaving behind a cryptic remark as he departed: “Treat him well.”
Jiang Huaiyan carefully weighed the meaning of those words. Did he mean a simple kind of “well,” or something more? He didn’t dwell on it for long and went to his room to shower.
When he went to see Zhou Yunqiu after his shower, the boy was sitting on the bed in a daze. His exquisite face had an unnatural flush. Jiang Huaiyan hurried over and felt his forehead. It was terrifyingly hot. The fever was back.
“Lie down quickly. I’ll call the doctor over,” Jiang Huaiyan said, reaching for his phone.
His hand was gripped tightly.
“Jiang Huaiyan?” There was an air of disbelief in Zhou Yunqiu’s trembling voice.
Jiang Huaiyan’s heart shuddered. He cupped the boy’s burning face, looking directly into his red, swollen eyes, and answered softly, “It’s me. I’m back.”
Zhou Yunqiu’s mouth puckered, and tears rolled down. “I must be dreaming again.”
Jiang Huaiyan lowered his head, tenderly kissing away the tears from the corners of his eyes out of heartache. “You’re not dreaming. I’ve really come home.”
